O’Reilly to MKH: Hey, how about some federal laws to regulate speech on the Internet?

At long last, the not-so-hidden agenda behind this weekly journey into the icky is laid bare. Tort law’s not enough, it seems; when he talks about “policing the ‘Net,” he means it. Consider this a fortuitous bookend with the Steyn post, starring MK as the hostile witness forced to testify for the prosecution against the Web. Bill likes to say he’s not a conservative. Indeed.

I stopped watching his show and listening to him a long time ago. He is very much like McCain. He NEVER budges on ideas he has, and he is old as dirt and can relate to youth about as well as Romney can relate to the poor.

O’Reilly really needs to get a grip - I know he’s said he hates the Internet, but if he’s not on it, then I would imagine he really doesn’t know anything about it.
And as for conservative… not.

MKH is spot-on about McCain and the right-wing blogosphere.

So, he wants to police the internet. Does he feel the same way about the fairness doctrine or is he just a hypocrite?

I get the feeling that FOX is moving to the left, ever so slowly, to appease the libs.
Yeah Bill lets put some laws out there for the internet. While were at it, lets make some for cable news.
I know he isn’t this dumb.
PappaMac on February 6, 2008 at 10:12 PM
It is not moving slowly to the left. The key term in my statement is “slowly”.
TCJ on February 6, 2008 at 10:19 PM
Um, don’t we already have laws for what’s on cable.
What’s the FCC’s job then?

Bloviating Bill ought to be smart enough to know where such laws would lead.

From global warming (he has drunk deeply of the Koolaid), to insisting the oil companies are gouging with gas prices, despite the number of people who have tried to explain basic economics and market forces to him (including Cavuto), and now this. He is McCainian in his dogged refusal to absorb facts that contradict his views. And that makes him, a pinhead.
iurockhead on February 6, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Oh, that. Yeah, and O’Reilly can be quite a tool. This would be one of those times.
Wind Rider on February 6, 2008 at 10:27 PM
I know MK was probably a little stunned by Bill’s ridiculous comment about needing to regulate the ‘net, but I was hoping for a more vigorous defense of free speech from the right.
I think she should convince them to devote an entire segment next time to debunking this ridiculous anti-free speech shtick Bill has going.

Switching to the real topic, we’re slipping folks. 25 minutes to the first gratiuitous suck-up to The Hammer? Far too long, especially because she uncorked a very nice laugh (and I can’t believe I’m the first one to mention that 44 minutes in).

It never once occurred to that dumb@ss that when someone says something bad about you, you can a)ignore it or b)counter it with other information.
And as for destroying people… good GRIEF, do we have to make a list of how many people the media has slandered? Start with Richard Jewell and work your way forward or backward, you’ll come up with a long list. O’RLY is a fool.

It’s a crying shame there aren’t any individuals, anywhere, who are legally and morally responsible for monitoring and protecting those poor kids. For example, if the kid was hungry, they could fix him dinner… if he had a broken arm, they could take him to the ER… buy him clothes when he outgrows his old ones… just basically take charge and be responsible for him until he reaches the age of legal majority.
Laura on February 6, 2008 at 11:13 PM
Regulating Rights in he name of protecting everyone when all it does is make it harder for those who are responsible with their Rights to exercise them freely. Attacks like this aren’t just limited to those who would take away your 2nd Amendment Rights (which Mr. O’Reilly also wants more regulation on last I heard).
Yakko77 on February 6, 2008 at 11:24 PM
Did BO admit he does not have a life-at lease one that does not include the internet.
MKH keep up the great work keeping BO in line.

fourstringfuror on February 6, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Very true. The sooner Fox replaces O’Reilly with MM or pehaps Dennis Miller (ah heck; I think MKH can carry an hour show, but it would absolutely kill the HamNations), the better.

You can destroy people on blogs??? As though the MSM can’t destroy people, and never have????
Couldn’t Mary have hit this our of the park??? Is she afraid she won’t be asked back??
I have heard this guy repeat these kinds of statements on his show,, attacking and attempting to destroy blogging!! In other words,, using his position to destroy and regulate what others are saying! Who then is regulating him????
The truth is, the internet is the great equalizer! We all have equal access! Someone wants to destroy someone with a blog,, all that someone has to do to get equal time is put up their own blog!!
If the MSM wants to destroy someone, I can’t buy a TV station to get equal time!!P>
Fact is, they want to shut us down because they don’t want the competition! If they succeed, it won’t be the Dems that do it,, it will be guys like O’Reilly and McCain wannabees that shut us all down!!
I am convinced, it is Republicans that pose the most danger of reviving the Fairness Doctrine!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danica_Patrick
Lacking any real racing skills, Danica is little more than a pretty face and a nice chest on which to place your company’s name. She’s posed for dozens of magazines, made plenty of commercials, and done hundreds of photo ops, all of them playing on her good looks and her athletic body.
Unfortunately for her, her whining about sexism and being looked at differently fall on deaf ears when she makes commercials like the one here.
Yeah, I’m hard on her. I’m hard on her because racing isn’t for pansies. If she can’t run with the big boys, she shouldn’t be on the track.

No gill nets, Bill!
They’re the worst!
Right after those sticky cyber-webs.

Bill O’Reilly is revolted by the Constitution unless of course he gets to pick and choose the parts he likes.
Bill hates the Internet because it is a shining example of what the First Amendment is all about. He is just pissed he is not the gate keeper anymore.
Have we not had this argument before a million times?

He is actually more like Rudy, a strict authoritarian/disciplinarian/do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do kinda of guy.
He describes himself as a conventional populist. He plays a Conservative on TV because he basically has to appeal to the audience he has harvested over the years.
I posted this same thing earlier under the Shephard Smith entry. The same applies to O’Reilly, his show in the beginning was light hearted and had an almost Hollywood feel to it. But he is no different than any of the Fox anchors, over the years - they got the audience that they got - and Bill’s audience is that type of oxymoron Conservative crop that wants to stop, legislate and regulate everything that they believe is bad for the country and they find repulsive.
We all know that real Conservatives do none of those things, especially bringing the Feds into anything and everything.
O’Reilly wants legislation also because he wants to censor any negative thing written about himself that’s out there.
Rudy was the same way. He went before a judge and tried to block the Transit Auth from running New York Magazine ads on the sides of buses that were promoting the particular issue that covered his dramarama involving his last divorce from First Lady Donna Hanover, which we all as New Yorkers had thrown in our faces anyway.
Thankfully the judges ruled no. Why O’Reilly’s ratings are going upwards is amazing, I have no idea at this late date who would want to watch his brand of megalamania.
And when he has Geraldo or Sharpton on, forget about it, it’s a pure pukefest.

trailortrash on February 7, 2008 at 3:08 AM
Actually, he’s around my age. But he has not followed the Internet. I, on the other hand, was on top of it before you guys graduated from high school. O’Reilly just doesn’t want to admit the bloggers have got him…just like the denial coming from the rest of the MSM.
Connie on February 7, 2008 at 4:01 AM
I love watching The Factor and actually agree with O’Reilly 70% or so of the time, but on this…
He’s either playing an extreme devil’s advocate or just entirely and nightmarishly ignorant.
Should people be responsible on the internet? Absolutely (whether they actually will is a different story). Is there any mannerable way to “police” the entirety of the world wide web without completely infringing on our basic, inalienable rights? Certainly not.
And besides… how is the kind of slime Juicy Campus puts out any different than an issue of The National Inquirer or The Sun? Should we have federal laws banning all grocery stores from carrying those? How on earth do those not impact celebrity lives any more than this Juicy website tries to do? People actually have to believe what they’re reading is true in the first place; in the case of tabloidism, sensible people know to take every word of it without even the proverbial grain of salt.

Yeah, you’re right Billy. They will have to pass Federal laws because the next President slated for election is going to likely take another chunk out of free speech. Why can’t he understand that policing the “nets” is the same as gun control or other assaults on the Constitution?

I don’t think we need any laws for the internet and agree on the parenting points. Just pointing out a likely inevitability, paticularly with minors all over the internet and pervs stalking them on sites like myspace.
The commerce portion of the net is where likely laws could come, or regulation. Buying stuff online is hurting small towns on sales tax revenues all over the country. Take Internet Gambling as well, most states have made Gambling Illegal and then comes the internet and you can do it from home anyway. arguably infringing on states rights.

OReilly has always been an eccentric independent and we should train him by sending educational email, explaining, thoughtfully, sincerely and simply, by using words of fewer than three syllables, why censorship is wrong.
Isn’t he the big advocate of personal responsibility?

The fact is, Danica does have racing skills - she has proven that through some very good finishes, including in the Indy 500.
The problem is, she demeans her racing talents, and distracts from that, by doing all the ‘cheesecake’ crap.
I’m not a huge Danica fan, mostly because of her whiny attitude when something goes wrong for her on the track - but also because she takes away any possibility to take her seriously as a driver when she does poses in skimpy bikinis.
The internet ad, while it gave me a chuckle, made me shake my head because it was so corny - and left me saying, “Why are you doing that to yourself?”
Whoever is managing her career is highlighting the wrong things.

I’ve got the solution for O’Reilly.
Elect McCain, and let him pick FEC Commissioners. Then we will have speech restrictions on the internet. Just like McCain sued the FEC to try to get in 2005.
But hey, I’m probably making stuff up just for a vicious attack.
C|Net interview with an FEC Commissioner, from 2005 regarding McCain’s lawsuit:
http://www.news.com/The-coming-crackdown-on-blogging/2008-1028_3-5597079.html
WSJ Editorial on the lawsuit:
http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110006458
Wow, I have the Wall Street Journal helping me make stuff up too? I’m the new Karl Rove… That or McCain really does (or at least did) want regulation of speech on the internet.
But there are some things we like? Seriously, does he have a “benefit” that outweighs the likely damage he’ll cause to Constitutional freedoms?
