McCain to get 95% of California’s delegates? Update: McCain all but clinches mathematically? Update: Brokered convention?

I nodded at this in the Scarborough post but it’s a big enough deal to warrant its own thread. 42-34 is the (almost) final tally from Cali this morning. The 173 delegates are awarded proportionally, which means roughly 70 for Maverick and 60 for Mitt, right? Wrong. Proportionality in this case means winner-take-all by district, so those delegate estimates work only if McCain and Romney take 42% and 34% of the state’s districts. They’re 53 separate little primaries; the statewide popular vote is largely meaningless.
So how’d they do by district? If you saw the earlier thread, you already know. We’re looking at a delegate breakdown closer to 160-10, which qualifies as, shall we say, an objectively bad day for Mitt Romney, even among serious analysts whose pundit fu is, of course, to be trusted. It has, at last, come to this.
Update: CNN puts Maverick at 615 delegates but with only 56 in his column thus far from California. Team McCain says the real number is closer to 775. Which means…
Speaking with reporters today, McCain adviser Charlie Black said, “To date, we have 775 delegates, Romney has 284, Huckabee has 205. It takes 1,191 to clinch the nomination. There are 963 left to be chosen, so Romney or Huckabee would have to have all of them — all of them — to get to 1,191. Now you can’t do that because a majority of those 963 are chosen in proportional primaries, which means you’d have to get 100% if the vote to get them all.
Update: What’s the likelihood of Mitt blowing McCain out in the remaining states?
[N]early half the coming reaces are open contests — those that allow Democrats and independents in which McCain has fared well. “To make things worse for Mitt, the open contests are in larger states (Ohio, Texas, Indiana).
Update: CPAC may be Romney’s last hurrah.
Update: Reader James P. turns Charlie Black’s logic around in an e-mail:
All Mitt (and Huckabee) need to do to deny McCain enough delegates to win the nomination is win 547 of the remaining 963 delegates – roughly 57%. Which means it will go to the convention, where anything can happen. Given that around 66% of Republicans voted for someone other than McCain last night, it’s not out of the question, especially given most of the upcoming contests are awarded on a proportional basis and McCain won’t be taking primaries outright (like he did last night).
All that does is lock up the VP nomination for Huckabee, though, doesn’t it? Maverick goes to the convention with, say, 1,000 delegates needing 191 more to win. He pulls Huck aside, the deal is done, and he gets the Huck faction in return for promising him the bottom of the ticket.
Update: Noam Askew tries to game out a brokered convention. Not all delegates are bound to the candidate they’re pledged to, he reminds us, a fact very much in Romney’s mind right now.

No, the problem is Romney. McCain-Romney would be much much better than McCain-Huckabee for the general, but Romney has ruled himself out and seems content on splitting the party and going down in a blazing inferno.

Those who will do anything to prevent McCain from being REWARDED for screwing us all … are the true conservatives. The rest are sissies who drop to their knees rather than stand up to the fraud. Sellouts. Traitors. They are voting against their own principles and beliefs, simply to be on the side of the winner.
Gutless!

Try to imagine the Founders if they had such lack of spine. Would they have dared to write the Declaration of Independence? Or would they have simply backed down to avoid a backlash?

I think we should admit that the Democrats are right about one thing. The early primaries should have proportional delegates to vote–which the Democrats tend to do a little more than the Republicans.
And the states that vote later should be winner take all. Thus, the states which later could still play a role in the system. Under this system, we would have had time to explain why both Huckabee and McCain were bad choices. The problem we had this time was explanation fatigue. We’d just got out the message about the problems with Huckabee when the “Straight Talk Express” appeared out of nowhere.

All primaries should be proportional to vote, and all primaries should be held on the same day.
The entire system is rigged for a purpose.
The mess in West Virginia was not by accident. What sense does it make to require a candidate gain 50% of the vote. If a candidate wins the first ballot 48% to 22%, you’re telling me it shouldn’t be over at that point?
The 50% rule is there for the sole purpose of allowing for rigging if the outcome does not come out the way it’s desired. The fact that the majority of voters picked Romney, and the losers were allowed to then COMBINE votes to defeat him is complete corruption.

Setting your hatred of McCain and Huck aside, how could you support Mitt with his obvious contempt for the military:
January 30 at Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Romney said,
Boston Globe, June 24, 2007.
But, of course, he was lying. Boston Herald, May 2, 1994:
This of course is in addition to comparing the sacrifices of his boys by working on his campaign to young men serving their country in the military.
Then yesterday he insults two actual war heros at the same time — McCain and Dole.
Why does Mitt have no respect for the military?

This is why by Nov. shamnesty will be on the back burner, with McCain having put it there. The idea of watching that arrogant liar sign a petition would be delightful schradenfruede. Kiss conservative ass. Eat crow. Yum, yum!!
csdeven on February 6, 2008 at 3:36 PM
Absolutely backwards. The blame falls on those people who picked obviously unelectable candidates because they liked them, rather than picking a candidate people could agree on.
Rudy was Exhibit A. All those people pushing Rudy knew from Day One that he would be unacceptable to social conservatives, and should have known he could never get the nomination without social conservatives. But they convinced themselves that he would get the nomination, and that the social conservatives would have to fall in line to prevent Hillary.
Tancredo was another example. He only really appealed to those obsessed with illegal immigration. No other appeal at all. Fortunately, he dropped out soon enough to not do much damage.
Huckabee was another example. Fiscal conservatives are not going to vote for Huckabee, and foreign policy conservatives rightly disdained him.
Romney is another example. He at least was smart enough to try to win over fiscal, foreign policy, and social conservatives at the same time. But the writing was on the wall way back that people didn’t trust him.
No one should have wasted time on a candidate who didn’t appeal to all three types of conservatives. You could rightly blame the current state of things on Huckabee. But you could just as easily blame it on Romney. But the real blame goes to the supporters of each who evaluated electability because a candidate looked strong in one or two states without realizing the support they were looking at was more of a ceiling than a floor.
Bottom line: the factions have killed us. Most of us could have lived with Fred, even if we preferred Rudy, or Romney, or -shudder- Huckabee. But we rejected decent all-around candidates for candidates which appealed to certain factions. Result: McCain as the likely nominee, who nobody likes, and many hate, but apparently not quite enough people hate.
It’s all in which consensus candidate you’re willing to accept. If you don’t accept the right one, one will be accepted for you.

Hey, Chicken, if the topic comes up I am not afraid of it. If people can bring Christianity into a political debate by talking about the Evangelical vote, then I am certainly entitled to ask them if they believe they evolved from a rock.
Well, done. You are making the right choice supporting Mike. He is the only true conservative running.
Speaking of “evilution” think about this for a moment. Ann chose to attack a fellow Christian ho didn’t debunk evolution enough, instead of applauding Mike for being the first candidate to lift up his hand when asked during one of the debates to “raise your hand if you don’t believe in evolution”. Huckabee was one of only three who had the courage. Mitt Romney didn’t. Giuliani didn’t. Fred Thompson kept his hand down. Etcetera.

I don’t think Mitt has one single clue what it is like to be in the military or a family member of a brave trooper.
As a personal note and only because you know my situation, the area my son (11bravo 101st) is in has seen an increase in attacks. My heart has been aching and I can’t sleep at night. But today he told me (he is a gunner on a humvee) that they are using MRAP’s now. I cried. It was like the weight of a thousand worlds was lifted off my back. But you know what he told me? He said the MRAP is longer and his turret is toward the front and he has a harder time protecting the dismounts. The vehicle will withstand a 300 lb charge, but he’d rather sacrifice his security for his ability to protect his guys.
My God, I wish I was half as brave and committed as my son.

That bigot you keep shilling for can’t win ANYWHERE except the south. If that bigot wasn’t in the race, Mitt would have won the south and would be the nominee. Conservatives don’t engage in class warfare and bigoted politics. Your guy is an unmitigated disgusting vile bigot.

The quality of discourse in the comments here went noticeably downhill after the last open registration a few weeks ago. We got a handful of very persistent annoying commenters who have detracted significantly from the discussions since they signed up. I expect that after the primaries are over these people who are rude and irritating in the way they promote the candidates of their choice will likely fade away, leaving the more serious and thoughtful conservative commenters to have the forum once again. I hope so, anyway!

Amen! Some of these commenters are grown babies with a keyboard. No discussing, just bomb-throwing.

I don’t see how McCain doesn’t win the Republican Nomination. The Democrats on the other hand, I don’t see how they don’t wind up going all the way to the Convention.

The second largest state in the Union is DYING to get in on this!!

As long as you don’t use your favorite word “bigot”.
There ya go… didn’t take but just a minute.
And again.
Bam! And again!
Keep talking, someday you’ll say something intelligent.

Notice how you cannot defend the bigots actions? Don’t worry if you didn’t. The rest of us did.
csdeven on February 6, 2008 at 4:24 PM
How many time are you going to use your favorite word?
Ah, yes.
apacalyps on February 6, 2008 at 4:24 PM
You continue to say the word “bigot”. Do you have tourettes syndrome?
apacalyps on February 6, 2008 at 4:28 PM
Go away, apacalyps. You add nothing to the discussion but bigotry and ignorance. With any luck you’ll soon be banned just as your boy, Harald, was. You Huckabots have outstayed your welcome.
I don’t know if you’ve realized it, but the “What Would Jesus Do?” candidate is still in third with regards to delegates. In what world are you living that third place is worthy of giddiness? You’re a joke.
HebrewToYou on February 6, 2008 at 4:31 PM
Are you paying attention yet? You still haven’t defended his bigoted actions. Are you that proud of his bigotry?
csdeven on February 6, 2008 at 4:31 PM
apacalyps, he uses that word because it’s an accurate reflection of your and Huckabee’s viewpoints. You deserve that title for your anti-Mormon rhetoric alone. Shame on you.
HebrewToYou on February 6, 2008 at 4:32 PM
Bottom Line….
McCain is going to be the nominee, like it or not.
He’ll beat Clinton, but he will not beat Obama.
Figuring that if however he becomes the president, you McCainiacs will rue your fanaticism when his true colors come out. GRrrrrrrr.
gunter on February 6, 2008 at 4:33 PM
My best to you and your son. You both deserve better candidates.
tommylotto on February 6, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Not after the Clinton Smear Machine gets to work on McCain’s many, many flaws as a candidate. They will tear him to shreds faster than you can say “Shamnesty!”
I personally believe Obama is going to win the Democratic Primary. And McCain stands a whelk’s chance in a supernova of beating him. Two points to whomever knows which author the whelk reference comes from.
HebrewToYou on February 6, 2008 at 4:36 PM
That’s funny.

This is off the topic, but I was wondering if you live in Israel?

Back up your claim I am a bigot or shut-up.
Mittheads like you have been calling for Huckabee to leave after South Carolina, you said it was all over for Huck, but you were wrong and last night proved it Huckabee dominated the Southern states. Romney was a DISASTER last night. Face it. He couldn’t compete in the South and everybody knows you need to win in the South to be President. Mike has a better case that it’s time for Romney to leave.
Stop whining Romney.
