Audio: Mark Steyn on the end of free speech in Canada

Twenty minutes with Shire Network News, starting at 13:35 of podcast 115 in the right-hand sidebar. The persecution of Ezra Levant is being carried out by a single Star Chamber; the persecution of Mark Steyn is being carried out by three, an unnecessary redundancy given that the defendant is always guilty in these Kafkaesque situations. There’s a lot to unpack but pay particular attention to his point about what a society free of offense requires of the state. Hence the polite banality of Levant’s interrogator and the “smiley face” to which SNN refers in its post as Canada transitions: A spoonful of sugar makes the, er, medicine go down.

There could be worse things than Mark Steyn having to make a home in the US.

We’ll hold the line against Islamic umbrage – at least for a while.

Freedom is the freedom to say “Islam sucks.”

The “1 + 1 = 2” of the post-Orwellian world.

Without the ability to offend the offensive there is no meaning to “freedom”.

Whereas the Canadian house passed a law allow for unlimited detention of terrorist subjects so is still some hope.

New canadian anti terror law

Thanks AP for highlighting this. I would have missed this otherwise.

William Amos on February 6, 2008 at 9:55 PM

How is that a good thing, if they define free speech as “terrorism?”

Of course there has always been “unlimited detention” for people caught red-handed planting and setting off bombs. The new laws apply only to the people who criticize that sort of behavior.

You will tolerate the intolerance.

Kafkaesque should be good for asylum.

The only one acquitted was the Canadian Nazi party and that’s because it didn’t exist.

How insane has Canada become and why?

TheBigOldDog on February 6, 2008 at 10:39 PM

I think he does live in the US. Doesn’t he live in New Hampshire?

It’s better than that scary one they used to always use. He looked like some kind of crazy mountain man.

TX Mom on February 6, 2008 at 10:48 PM

Yes, Canadian citizen living in N.H. Maybe this will be the push he needs to become a US citizen.

Great interview. Honesty has become dangerously radical.

I have seen the future, and I don’t like it!

Somehow I don’t think the HRC’s are looking forward to their inquisition.

This has a much better chance of a common sense ending than a Kafka ending.

If I am wrong than all is lost….:o)

Thanks for the link…. If you have any comments on the interview or the rest of the show for that matter, we’d be happy to hear them!

We will have part two of the interview with Mark Steyn next week.

It feels more and more like we’ve all fallen down the rabbit hole.

Fools. If people are not free to say what they think then how will we know what they think.

Free speech is an indulgence of one’s self, an exclusionary indulgence of the individual at the expense of the overall interests of society. Society must protect its diversity and the rights of its oppressed minorities from speech that perpetuates their victimhood by being judgemental.

I remember when this was a free country.

petefrt on February 7, 2008 at 9:49 AM

Awesome post, thanks for that. That sure beats listening to some of the local liberal drivel I get the radio.

Steyn sums it up best: Of course we can claim the right to not be offended. The only problem is that if we gain that right, we will lose ALL other rights.

Steyn sums it up best:

logis on February 7, 2008 at 2:46 PM

Yes. I meant to add that his America Alone is available now in audio edition, so you can listen to it while you drive. IMO, it’s the most valuable book I’ve read in the last year or so.

petefrt on February 7, 2008 at 3:52 PM

Thank goodness the Muslims are so foolish when picking their battles and their opponents. We couldn’t ask for a better champion for free speech than Mark Steyn. Isn’t it time that some investigative reporters hunted down the Muslim perpetrators and grilled them? Wouldn’t this make a fabulous 60 Minutes segment?

The bigger this gets, the better. It will educate the slumbering masses about the Islamic contempt for free speech and build up the resistance against Muslim encroachment on our liberty.

Everyone who hasn’t already should check our IowaHawk’s superb parody of this.
