Audio: John McCain wants my vote

So I’m sitting here blogging and the phone rings. It’s none other than Senator John McCain, asking for my vote.
McCAIN: Hi, this is Senator John McCain and I’m calling today to personally ask for your vote and to make a pledge to you. As your president, I promise to lead our nation and our party as a Ronald Reagan conservative. I’ll lower your taxes, veto wasteful government spending and ensure our party returns to the smaller government principles on which it began. I’ll secure our border first before pursuing any other immigration reform. I’ll appoint conservative judges, like Justices Alito and Roberts. I will protect the sanctity of life and have a 24 year record to prove it. This is my commitment to you. As you go to the polls, consider our greatest challenge as a nation is to defeat the relentless enemy of radical Islamic extremists. My life experience has prepared me better than any other candidate to defeat this enemy. We can and will win this war. Again this is John McCain and I humbly ask you to vote for me.
I’ve come to post this not to bash McCain, but to praise him. If this call was my first introduction to John McCain, I’d vote for him in a heartbeat. It’s not my first intro to McCain so I’m still voting for Romney, but it’s a well-done call that hits all the right notes. I’m choosing not to dwell on the “any other immigration reform” line, of course. The rest is very good. I’m sure that for millions of Republican voters on Tuesday, this call or something like it sealed the deal.
Update: Mona Charen got the call and noticed what McCain does and doesn’t say in it.
Nary a word about global warming or Guantanamo. He “humbly” asks for our votes. If this is a hint of what is coming at CPAC, it suggests that McCain’s famous vanity is not getting the better of him this time. He seems to be willing to meet conservatives more than halfway.

So McCain is the guy who finally authorizes the SkyNet go-live. I always wondered who it would be.

That is, if Reagan was a tax-raising, global warming believing, Democrat-appeasing, Gitmo-closing, Washington-insider who constantly screwed over conservatives.

Did Fred! write the copy? I agree that if this was my first introduction to McCain, I would be in his pocket. But it’s not and I’m not.
ihasurnominashun on February 6, 2008 at 4:53 PM
“That thar is a red flag, mister.” /futile attempt at a southern drawl.
geckomon on February 6, 2008 at 4:54 PM
I agree. Maybe this is what he is planning for CPAC?
I hope you or Michelle get to ask him about his new “friend”.
TX Mom on February 6, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Yeah, he wants my vote too.
Ex-tex on February 6, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Is St. John sure that it doesn’t violate McCain/Feingold?
There should be a law against RINO’s calling our phone numbers during all the times of the day except when we’re sitting on the john.
Mcguyver on February 6, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

1) His “good friend and close advisor” warren rudman gave us nutjob david souter. He has worked more closely with kennedy and the democrats then with conservatives. You can bet if he becomes president and it is justice picking time arlen spector and kennedy will bring him the list of “acceptable” candidates. The gang of 14 did not give us Alito and Roberts, they imploded because Alito and Roberts were too strong and clean and the democrat leadership knew it. The gang of 14, lets all remember, was put together to thwart conservatives and help leftists block the appointment of conservative judges.
2) Thirty years ago mccain was in the military. Since then he has lived a privelidged life in the halls of congress. What is it about being a senator, one of one hundred, makes him more experienced to deal with islamic terrorists and dictators then anyone else?
People need to stop talking about the future of the republican party and start talking about putting the nail in the coffin and creating a new party. the republicans are democrat lite and we effectively have become a one party country. Fascism and authoritarianism is knocking at the door.
peacenprosperity on February 6, 2008 at 4:57 PM
LOL. Well, respectfully chuckling at least.
geckomon on February 6, 2008 at 4:59 PM
Just to avoid any confusion here: McCain’s moved on from radical Islam at this point and by “enemy” he means conservative Republicans who know that McCain is a Reagan conservative in the same way that Judas was a foot soldier for Christ.

You go to

Robocall? Looks more like a Terminator call, if I recognize that picture.

It was sure nice of him to leave a message like that. You would think he was too busy to do that.

Frozen Tex on February 6, 2008 at 5:05 PM
He’s depending on voter ignorance of his background. Odds are probably in his favor, in that regard.

By November of this year not only will we not recognize Mr. McCain of yesterday, but he won’t recognize himself either. He can win against Hillary, contrary to my friend csdeven’s predictions to the contrary. I predict he’ll even win CA, for many reasons: huge number of independents, Arnold, shamnesty, yes, that one,…
But he has to internalize that recording, and not just produce it.

I take back what I said about McCains staff being brilliant. I just got the pyramid email scheme from him where Im asked to forward my email to ten friends to support McCain.
When Political camapaigns treat voters like a Norman Hsu investment Scheme really have to question their sanity.
William Amos on February 6, 2008 at 5:07 PM
Oh, geez, I’m sorry… that was meant to be DUDE!
Frozen Tex on February 6, 2008 at 5:07 PM
If American’s act like American’s (to lazy to check up on candidates and just buy the garbage that comes out of their mouths)… McCain is a shoe in for the GOP candidacy. Obama is even smoother when it comes to saying what people want to hear so McCain lieing is in vain (even Hillary’s lieing is starting to sound better, if all you want is for someone to lie to you and tell you what you want to hear….plus she can always rely on crying to get votes).
TOPV on February 6, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Or McCain-Feingold.
For me to accept McCain he has to cover all those bases and REPENT! Come to think of it, since he’s still a Senator, he could introduce legislation to repeal CFR.
Buy Danish on February 6, 2008 at 5:12 PM
True, but it’s also true that you go to war with the army you have—not somebody else’s.
FloatingRock on February 6, 2008 at 5:15 PM
He does, unfortunately as Michelle puts it, it’s about action now. As much as he loathes Romney, do you believe that olive-branching him as Veep is a good strategy of making peace with CPAC by saying, “Hey – I can figure you don’t believe me so I’m taking him on considering your kind (on talk-radio, etc) find him acceptable.”
SkinnerVic on February 6, 2008 at 5:17 PM
McCain. I just can’t vote for that guy. To me, amnesty is a greater threat to the US than radical islam. At least there is a chance radical Islam will not wipe out the US. If we grant amnesty, there is no chance that the US won’t be wiped out with a flood of illegal peasants.
saiga on February 6, 2008 at 5:17 PM
On Monday I got a recorded call to poll who I would be voting for and why. I had indicated I was voting for Romney with no second choice (I live in AZ). Found out at the end of the call that it was sponsored by McCain. On Tuesday I got the call from McCain asking for his vote followed by another McCain campaign call trashing Romney.
Comparing records is one thing but taking statements out of context and implying they mean something they don’t is cheap. Romney may have his faults but I believe he is far more honest and trustworthy than either McCain or Huckabee.
kaye on February 6, 2008 at 5:22 PM
This guy doesnt do anything “Humbly”..as he states at the end of this little CHAT. “Deviously, Underhandedly, Spitefully”…Now that would of at least been honest. He must take us all for fools with short term memories. Maybe thats why he keeps reminding us that hes a “War Heroe”… just in case we forgot the last time he reminded us. Real Heroes dont bring it up.. they dont see themselves as Heroes and certainly wouldn’t use it to get votes. No wonder He and Kerry are “good friends” across the aisle.
LibsREvilDoers on February 6, 2008 at 5:26 PM
You can tell it’s like pulling teeth for him to read that crap.
“Yada, yada, Ronald Reagan, yada, yada, lower taxes, yada, yada, secure the border, yada, yada, etc.”
I bet he’s really thinking to himself, “Do you think they’re buying this sh!t?”
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 6, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Ain’t going to happen. He thinks he’s got this baby all locked up using his present policy positions, and is practicing his touchdown dance in the end zone. I honestly don’t think he recognizes what is coming for him in the general.
a capella on February 6, 2008 at 5:27 PM
OK, how come the only robo-call I’ve gotten was from a Ron Paul support organization? *sigh*
As anyone here knows, I’m all for McCain. But dang…couldn’t he at least have put a little “umph” into that shpeel? He sounds like he hasn’t had that first cup of coffee in the morning…
JetBoy on February 6, 2008 at 5:29 PM
You’re a bit nicer than I will be next Wednesday when it comes time for me to get that call.
steveegg on February 6, 2008 at 5:30 PM
McCain is so darn dishonest. I hate the thought of him winning. He has been playing some darn dirty politics and Huck is too, but would never do anything negative he says.
I live in Arizona too. Myself and my husband wrote McCain a few times and Senator Kyle. We never heard anything back from McCain yet Kyle wrote us twice. A small gesture like that shows his character. He is so darn unlikeable. I can’t bare the thought of him being President. Besides being a liar, liberal, he is so not on the ball. Romney is vital and intelligent and I would trust him way above the rest.
The people voting are obviously not critical thinkers. They most likely don’t know the issues, won’t vote for a Mormon, whatever. The scary thing is that they are the majority.
Conservatives R Us on February 6, 2008 at 5:31 PM
Are you sure that was McCain? He never once used the term “My Friend(s)”. Doesn’t he either begin or end every sentence with that phrase?
PappaMac on February 6, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Step into another person’s shoes for a second. If you were Osama Bin Laden or Ayman Al Zaqiri, which presidential candidate would you most fear? Hillary? No. Barack Hussein Obama? No. Mike Huckabee? No. John McCain? (Hold that thought.) Mitt Romney? Uh, no, not a girly-man. More good points in McCain’s favor: personal character, integrity (he’s no “party man”), patriotism, courage, and honesty. Al Qaida has no greater fear than John McCain as Commander-in-Chief. He will follow Bin Laden to the gates of Hell. McCain Second Look!
indythinker on February 6, 2008 at 5:35 PM
You were close until you used the words “personal character” – left his first wife on her death bed, and “honesty” – stating that Romney was for time tables to withdraw from Iraq. Come to think of it, “integrity” might be a stretch also. But i’ll give you patriotism, and courage.

Let me think on it, Johnny Johnny
Let me think on it,
Oh let me think on it and I’ll give you an answer at the ballot box.
Kini on February 6, 2008 at 5:52 PM
Ronald Reagan said in 1975 that, “A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers.”
Forget my vote Johnny. You can’t even keep an F-4 in the air (examine his pre-prisoner mil record). Daddy (Admiral) bailed him out more than once.
I’m a Lt.Cmdr Viet Nam vet, so I have a right to that opinion.
mustang1 on February 6, 2008 at 5:52 PM
If only those words were true, I’d vote for him in a millisecond! But does he mean it? Will he mean it? I’ve got 8 years in my collective memory that says NO! Oh John! If only the conservative we knew and loved hadn’t died in 2000! You were seduced by the dark side of the left and forever will it dominate your destiny! Such a pity!

You shoulda heard the nasty robocall McCain pulled on Mitt in CA the day before the election. Some snotty chick’s voice said it was an important message to Mitt Romney supporters. She went on to say McCain is the best immigration guy and, oh yeah, Mitt’s a big abortion supporter and a liar.
Real classy.
