Open thread: California; Update: McCain wins Missouri; Update: Fox News calls California for McCain and Hillary; Update: Team Mitt plans “frank discussions” tomorrow

Results here. Whatever happens will steer the narrative tomorrow so we might as well open a thread. This is now must-win for Mitt; if McCain runs away with it, Romney’s got nothing meaningful to show for Super Tuesday. Here’s something fun to do while we wait: Scroll slowly down this list and compare the vote totals for the Democrats in each state to the totals for the GOP. Ask yourself how that bodes for fundraising during the general campaign.

Hillary’s had a reasonably good night thus far. But not good enough.

Update: With 87% reporting in Missouri, Huckabee leads McCain by 47 votes.

Update: Some sunshine for our special lady?

Update: Har. Romney’s camp says McCain underperformed.

Update: With 96% reporting in Missouri, Maverick’s pulled ahead to a 7,000-vote lead. Huckabee wanted/needed this not only for the delegates but to prove that his appeal isn’t limited to the south. The margin’s close enough that he sort of proved that anyway, although the winner-take-all element makes that a cold comfort.

Mitt? Third place, 23,000 votes off the pace.

Update: And now Fox calls Missouri for Maverick.

Update: Juan Williams says Obama leads Hillary among white men in California by 27 points, but Hillary leads big among Latinos.

Update: Have at it — the Republican and Democratic exit polls. The gender breakdowns favor Maverick and Hillary.

Update: And no sooner do I post that than Fox calls it for both of them. Big win for Mac, bigger win for the Glacier. Say goodnight, Mitt.

Update: Rove’s back-of-the-envelope estimate is that Mitt might finish third in total delegates for the night. McCain’s total is greater than Romney’s and Huckabee’s combined. Another interesting point from Rove: Obama won more states, but most of them were red states the Dems won’t carry in the general.

Update: The Messiah ekes out a 49-48 win in Missouri. As for Cali, say it with me, my friends. Never. Trust. Zogby.

zogby.png

Update: See-Dub helps Hewitt with the spin.

Update: Rumbles.

MSNBC’s John Yang says a Romney senior campaign official says “tomorrow will be a day of frank discussions on the campaign.”

Not quite a revelation, but the only news they have. A long day of meetings was already on the schedule long before the California news.

Yang says visit to Kansas on Friday is likely to be nixed.

Update: Si se puede!

Update: Bill Kristol thinks Mitt will pull out, possibly at CPAC(!).

Update: First in Missouri, third among Missouri conservatives.

Update: Geraghty tries to game out a Romney comeback. Big delegate lead for McCain + few WTA states left + the unlikelihood of Mitt blowing out Maverick in the proportional states + Huckabee still around to suck away conservative votes = The Reaper.

Hiney Von Pewps, I like to stab the knife home maybe tonight isn’t the time.. :{

Likewise. It’s good to have allies from the real world and the Republican party which actually exists.

Yea, I think we have some real “trolls” here, that want to make people vote for hillary.

Spot on. Negativity and Defeatism are the traits of Democrats. I’m glad I’m not the only one sick of reading all this John McCain=Satan garbage.

Chakra Hammer on February 6, 2008 at 2:36 AM

Well, following your suspicions about csdevin, he was readily identified as a troll in the past and it was because of his readiness to resort to the ugliest and most extreme rhetoric. He’s used racial slurs like “beaner” and “wetback”. And when he’s at the ready with a litany of anti-McCain nuggets like the ones above which haven’t been floating around any Republican sites I’m familiar with, but are standard in the comments at Media Matters and DKos, he sort of exposes himself.

Then there are the unfortunate fact of the white-supremacist trolls, who really have no course of action politically but to attatch themselves where they can and troll. They are corespondingly desperate about the immigration issue and indifferent to the fate of the GOP, and can be identified by that pattern.

Then there are just single issue nuts who lack perspective. No accounting for them.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 6, 2008 at 2:47 AM

McCain worshippers are like late season Patriot “fans” who could not name the starting quarterback. Only fans so they can say they hitched their wagon to a WINNER!

The WOT argument makes me chuckle. Yeah, which is more likely, that America wil be invaded and conquered by the scary Iranian army, or America will be slowly conquered by the dilution of its culture by “undocumented workers” from south of the border? Last time I checked my ATM asked if I wanted to continue in Spanish…not Farsi.

doubleplusundead on February 6, 2008 at 2:56 AM

Pax-

John McCain = Satan garbage.

John McCain isn’t Satan.

He a cheap roadshow Machiavelli.

And a typical Washington politician, AKA a lying weasel who sells out the borders of his nation for his personal power advantage.

Knowing that without them you have no serious security.

And a guarantee of 20-40 more million illegals sneaking into America over the coming few presidential terms. (His or a Dem’s.)

Until the demographic shift assures that these larval Democratic voters will make any hope of reversing the trend (of our loss of our sovereignty) impossible.

But that’s so unimportant, right?

We don’t need no stinkin’ borders!

Or nation.

The promise of McCain is: to pose as tough on “our enemies” overseas, while leaving the backdoor open for our country’s infiltration. By anybody.

And our undermining.

And a slow suicide.

While deceiving the populace that he is “strong”.

Promising plan, eh?

I live in california and I Do not believe it is a winner take all. here are some calulations that i sent to a co-worker around midnight…

Its midnight going to bed soon…it’s McCain at 43% and Romney at 30% with 49% of the votes tallied. After 15% of the votes were cast I noticed a little trend. Romney started earning 5 votes for every 4 for McCain at this rate we should wake up tomorrow and find out that they ended up being less than 125,000 votes apart…my straight line calculations came out as McCain 1,292,754 Romney 1,265,852. If it is that close and its proportional delagate distribution… heck yeah Romney stays in!!! even a split of up to 300-400 thousand votes is ok considering that Texas, Ohio, PA and a couple of other still weigh in heavy…pray for a brokered convention man!!!

TexasBella on February 6, 2008 at 4:16 AM

We face extraordinary challenges. I’m convinced — and I mean this very sincerely — I’m convinced that if Washington continues on its same course, America will emerge not as the great nation of the 21st century by the end, but as a second-tier power.

It will passed by someone else. I can’t tell you who it will be, but it would be passed by someone else.

That will not happen. We’ll keep America strong because we’ll hold on to the values that have always made us successful, values that Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush and Teddy Roosevelt and other great presidents spoke about.

– Mitt Romney, Tonight.

What an arrogant POS. Elect me, or America will go to crap. Love the Reagan-Bush line.

I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.

My first instinct on the poser was right. May your candidacy rest in peaces.

scotth on February 6, 2008 at 4:18 AM

I should point out that while many pundits laughed at McCain for campaigning in Massachusetts, CNN has him picking up 17 delegates there to Romney’s 21, after coming in about 10 points back in 2nd place.

I don’t care for either one. Mitt is a punk. All the supposed Conservative pundits supporting make me laugh. The man signed and supported one of the toughest gun laws in the country. Helped write, supported, and signed a heath care plan that uses state dollars to pay for abortion on demand for low income citizens.

He’s a self made Conservative in word only. He was presumptuous in speaking to who Reagan would support for the nomination. For one thing, Reagan never supported a primary nominee. He worked hard once there was one.

Reagan had more class in his pinky than Mitt could ever hope to have.

The ‘conservative’ pundits have taken us all for fools with their shrilling for Romney, and stupid threats of voting for Hillary/Obama, all the while smearing those who don’t follow their game as liberals or rinos or worse. No primary season in living memory has descended to quite this level of nastiness, and if we’re not careful it could get a whole lot worse.

Pax americana on February 6, 2008 at 5:04 AM

I wonder if John “Mexico First” McCain would warrant a ban? I think that I will be making some bumper stickers “McCain = Mexico First”, with “America, Americans and Jobs for Americans 2nd” in subscript. It may gall some die hards, but I will go and pull the lever for all republicans EXCEPT McCain. I feel that the Dems don’t have the balls to try and push Amnesty though on their own. Maybe without him at the spear head, it will languish until we can kill the issue with a true conservative president.

leanright on February 6, 2008 at 6:16 AM

Our only hope right now — and I am already assuming McCain is our nominee — is that the Ice Queen eventually prevails after a long, drawn out and bitterly divided fight vs the Honey-tongued Messiah. Maybe even at the convention itself.

And that the process snuffs out that insipid hero-worship Messiah has among the young, inexperienced and lame in mind among the uber-liberals and enough Hillary Hate comes out to let McCain pick off a few contested states in November.

Theres no use fighting it anymore. McCain isnt as eloquent, as inspiring or even as smart. But somehow Dubbya beat Kerry in the midst of a supposedly unpopular war so anything can happen….

Always Right on February 6, 2008 at 6:26 AM

McCain leads the pack in what remains of the dying embers of the conservative GOP I loved.
Moderates and liberals control the party now and I will save money not contributing to the GOP anymore. Still, it is a sad day for me, the socialist have won the day. Worst still, we have been betrayed from within our own party.
I know McCain is no hard core socialist, but he holds hands with that devil on a constant basis.
He calls it reaching across the aisle because he cannot admit to himself that he is actually crawling across the aisle.
When one consorts with the enemy one fouls himself in the process. He is a leader among men that have destroyed our party and eroded the values we hold so dear to our hearts.
Shame on you John McCain, for you have turned your back on conservatism, and pandered to those that use you like the tool you have become.
I demand my right to free speech, the right to life for the unborn, and I demand you protect your Arizona. border from invasion.
I demand this of you because as a senator from Arizona you are sworn to uphold the laws of this land. And because in November you will retire from politics a LOSER! Do something to make up for your shameful behavior.

leanright on February 6, 2008 at 6:59 AM

I have been a life long Republican. I have always supported the Republican nominee. I will not under any circumstances vote for McCain.
If the RINO’s want to steal this party, they can have it!
As for Huckabee,, he makes me sick! I have more repect for Ron Paul than I have for Huckabee!
I have more respect for Hillary Clinton than I have for McCain.

JellyToast on February 6, 2008 at 7:16 AM

The ironic thing about the scores of crybabies who are in effect declaring “I won’t vote for McCain – I don’t care what Hillary does as president because my candidate wasn’t nominated, McCain is the devil, I’m a political virgin who doesn’t understand how the process works and doggoneit I’m mad, the troops can rot since FDT/Mitt/Paul wasn’t picked, BLAH BLAH BLAH”

will be the same ones who, after not supporting the party will DEMAND an equal seat at the table in the event of a McCain win.

On the bright side, the Dem turnout has been white hot while GOP turnout has been awful in the absence of a viable conservative on the ballot.

The Republicans have no chance this November because they will not be able to turn out the vote. McCain and the power-hungry establishment will lose.

We will have a repeat of 1992-1994 and the glaring incompetence of Pelosi/Reid will be impossible to ignore.

Thanks mavericks.

Thanks mavericks.

Valiant on February 6, 2008 at 7:35 AM

Blame yourself sugarbear. The clear conservative candidate never materialized. In 8 years you will not be able to turn around the many changes in tax laws and health care that will be made. But you can claim that “I didn’t vote for McCain so there!” In 94 the change in leadership of the house reversed a 40 year hold on majority by the Dems. How old will you be in 40 years?

Bradky on February 6, 2008 at 7:41 AM

Gartrip is awake and the coffee isn’t strong enough. Where’s the gin? Romney seems finished. UUGGHHHH! And Hickabee has proven to be such a fool that he’s actually thinking Juan McMexico is going to annoint him VP. BWHAHAHAHA.
The only consolation going forward will be seeing the look on Hickabee’s face when Juan tosses him under the wheels of the Straight Talk Express. That’s a bloody sight that I can’t wait to see. Of course, the alternative is to have them run together and watch the two of them loose 45 states in Novermber to Clinton/Obama. That might be worth watching as well. These 2 deserve each other.
On the flip side, any good prospects for 2012? I need to send him/her a check.

Gartrip on February 6, 2008 at 7:47 AM

After seven years of watching and fighting against Americans who wish to see the country suffer so that they can get at George Bush, the last thing I wanted or expected to see was conservatives saying they would rather see the country suffer than support John McCain over Clinton or Obama, so that they can “get the blame.”

A retreat before victory is assured in Iraq cannot be undone in 2012. And mandatory, single-payer, universal health care, once established, will not EVER go away either.

I am not impugning anyone’s motives. I believe I have a reasonable understanding of principled behavior. But if your goal is to see the country punished because—

You can stop right there. If your goal is to see America punished, and her people open to attack and/or ruined financially in order to prove a point for any reason, then you do not deserve politial power nor are you likely to achieve it. A party is a compact. It is, essentially, a pleage of mutual support. As a matter of fact, it’s nothing more or less than a promise.

A political party is a series of personal compromises in order to achieve a goal unattainable by the perfect political party: one’s own self. If McCain is the legal and lawfully selected nominee, and Republicans decide to walk away from their party in droves, what makes them think they will be able to count on those who, you know, actually went out and voted Republican either joyfully or through clenched teeth, in order to prevent The Deluge?

If your idea of any political party is one that means unlimited support for your personal values if your candidate is ascendant, while you in turn owe none to those you dislike or even disdain, you might be in for a surprise in future elections.

Speaking as a FredHead myself, I am bitterly disappointed that I did not even have the chance to vote for a man I admired, and am more distraught still to find myself in the position I now occupy. I see many, many worrisome things about John McCain, but being tough on terror and spending are not among them. We could do worse. Two names come to mind immediately.

Much is said about principles, and since I am not able elect anyone BY MYSELF I have entered into this pact with the group of people who I feel most comfortable with in terms of values. If they, as a body, choose a candidate who is not my first, second, third or fourth choice, then I can look to the Democrats. There I find views so antithetical to everything I believe that I realize there is indeed something to this idea of party loyalty.

And I cannot help but think that such a kind and practical man as Ronald Reagan would be amazed that his name was being invoked so frequently in order to insure that the most liberal, socialist, power-hungry statist in my living memory is elected. I’m glad he’s not here to see this because if he knew the consequences of what was being done in his name, I believe it would kill the man.

Obviously, if McCain wins the presidency, he’ll only be a one term guy. He’s too damn old to consider anything else(well, maybe not in his mind). Can he really do THAT much damage in 4 years? This is the question that allowed me to get out of bed this morning. Please don’t take away my sliver of optimism.

sheesh, read the post right above yourself quoting Bill Whittle. If you don’t know Mr. Whittle, his site is ejectejecteject.com.

You could spend days reading his excellent essays, and it would be more enjoyable than watching people scream ugly things about McCain.

Of all the states that McCain won last night, how many of them will NOT go Blue in the general?

Maybe you could explain that whole loyalty concept to McCain. He almost joined the dems when he did not get his way in 2000, He has sided with them numerous times and he/they considered him for their ticket. McShamnesty is the one who need s loyalty lesson. Screw him.

jwp1964 on February 6, 2008 at 8:06 AM

I guess it’s time to face facts for real. I won’t be voting in November. If it wasn’t a done deal yesterday, it sure as hell is now. I feel ill. Legitimately physically ill. Time to wrap this one up and start planning for how to win the midterms. Maybe we can grab the reins back there since we can’t seem to get the Oval Office.

Mercutio on February 6, 2008 at 8:19 AM

The day after. I would like to thank all of my fellow hotairheads for a spirited race. Now, we can all come together to beat the Clintons like a rented mule in November. I can’t wait to see the War Hero vs. The Liars

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 6, 2008 at 8:21 AM

Why in the world didn’t conservatives gather around Huckmania instead of Romney? The conservative right ended up going somewhat for another moderate instead of a pastor. I don’t get it.

I for one will be retiring in the next year and a half. Selling all my hogs at the end of this month and the equipment and farm go on the block sometime late March/early April. My machine shop equipment and buildings are going up for auction late summer/early fall. I sold all but my favorite stocks a month ago, and my accountant is busy making plans to protect my assets from the forthcoming onslaught of new taxes.
If I haven’t learned anything else from McCain, I learned that I should do what is best for me and to hell with everyone else.
McCain win? You have got to be kidding. In a few more years, that man won’t be able to control his own bowels let alone the country.
The people of this country want change, and the best the GOP can offer is a crusty 72 year old that undermines his own party? You freakin expect to win with that?
You want to defend your position of compromising your political beliefs by telling yourself he is better than the alternative? That’s like stabbing your own leg 49 times because 50 times hurts too much.
My vote belongs to me and McCain will never see it.
I am going to retire very comfortably thank you, and I hope you are young enough that you will be forced to live with what you and your fence sitting ilk have done to this party. You are the ones that gave the moderates the power to distroy the conservative base, you live with it.
Fence sitters, BAH! Get a pair and stand up for what you believe in instead of just settling for what you can get.

Because Huck’s not conservative on many issues, & he’s badly in need of some international-issues coaching.

May as well get used to calling him President.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 6, 2008 at 2:56 AM

You’re either joking, or you’re a mouth-breather.

Democrats turned out 2-1 vs. Republicans last night. Unless you’re banking on McCain following through on his plan to switch parties, I’m pretty sure he’ll not get within spitting distance of the White House.

Don’t count out Obama yet. Their race is less than half over, & he’s breathing down her neck.

jgapinoy on February 6, 2008 at 8:30 AM

The Republican Establishment’s answer to a smack down in 2006 is to coalesce around John McCain. His idea of specifically outlining his platform is name dropping. The party is watered down and fractured. Schwarzenegger, Crist, Perry, Pataki…. these are the heavyweights for the Republicans? I’ve lived under Schwarzenegger and I now live under Perry. They do not inspire. The overt “appeal to the masses” through class warfare has worked. The animus illustrated here and in talk radio proves McCain and Huckabee have sought to carve out a win, instead of building a coalition. The moderates and independents won’t be there for him in the general. The socialist-speak McCain and Huckabee pandered to them pale in comparison to what Obama/Hillary can hand out to them. McCain will be fortunate to have his senate seat waiting for him in November.

Cold Steel on February 6, 2008 at 8:31 AM

Because the Dem winner is still very much in question, & most folks accepted McCain as inevitable.

jgapinoy on February 6, 2008 at 8:31 AM

If the everything-or-nothing club on our side can open their eyes enough to see that McCain is fairly conservative, & that Hillary & Obama are extremely liberal, maybe we can beat Obamary.
McCain consistently beats both of them in head-to-head match-ups.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 6, 2008 at 8:23 AM

Probably because Huckabee is a hatemonger. His candidacy is built on anger, fear, and envy: anger against the shadowy “Republican Establishment”, fear of those scary Mormons and their magic underwear, and envy over other people’s wealth.

Probably because most conservatives apposed illegal immigration, and Huckabee said they were un-Christian and anti-life.

jgapinoy on February 6, 2008 at 8:30 AM

The only agreement I will have with Bill Clinton is the fact that this whole thang IS a fairy tail. We keep hearing about inspiration and hope and change and whatever. It just doesn’t translate into votes. The youth vote has traditionally polled well, but in the end leaves you at the alter. We as republicans will be facing an army of Hillaries in November. 36-61 years old, female, white, suburban to urban, educated, and has had a man screw them over before. Unless Obama is her running mate, this race is over. Maverick will beat her by a hundred and fifty electoral votes.
