Open thread: California; Update: McCain wins Missouri; Update: Fox News calls California for McCain and Hillary; Update: Team Mitt plans “frank discussions” tomorrow

Results here. Whatever happens will steer the narrative tomorrow so we might as well open a thread. This is now must-win for Mitt; if McCain runs away with it, Romney’s got nothing meaningful to show for Super Tuesday. Here’s something fun to do while we wait: Scroll slowly down this list and compare the vote totals for the Democrats in each state to the totals for the GOP. Ask yourself how that bodes for fundraising during the general campaign.

Hillary’s had a reasonably good night thus far. But not good enough.

Update: With 87% reporting in Missouri, Huckabee leads McCain by 47 votes.

Update: Some sunshine for our special lady?

Update: Har. Romney’s camp says McCain underperformed.

Update: With 96% reporting in Missouri, Maverick’s pulled ahead to a 7,000-vote lead. Huckabee wanted/needed this not only for the delegates but to prove that his appeal isn’t limited to the south. The margin’s close enough that he sort of proved that anyway, although the winner-take-all element makes that a cold comfort.

Mitt? Third place, 23,000 votes off the pace.

Update: And now Fox calls Missouri for Maverick.

Update: Juan Williams says Obama leads Hillary among white men in California by 27 points, but Hillary leads big among Latinos.

Update: Have at it — the Republican and Democratic exit polls. The gender breakdowns favor Maverick and Hillary.

Update: And no sooner do I post that than Fox calls it for both of them. Big win for Mac, bigger win for the Glacier. Say goodnight, Mitt.

Update: Rove’s back-of-the-envelope estimate is that Mitt might finish third in total delegates for the night. McCain’s total is greater than Romney’s and Huckabee’s combined. Another interesting point from Rove: Obama won more states, but most of them were red states the Dems won’t carry in the general.

Update: The Messiah ekes out a 49-48 win in Missouri. As for Cali, say it with me, my friends. Never. Trust. Zogby.

zogby.png

Update: See-Dub helps Hewitt with the spin.

Update: Rumbles.

MSNBC’s John Yang says a Romney senior campaign official says “tomorrow will be a day of frank discussions on the campaign.”

Not quite a revelation, but the only news they have. A long day of meetings was already on the schedule long before the California news.

Yang says visit to Kansas on Friday is likely to be nixed.

Update: Si se puede!

Update: Bill Kristol thinks Mitt will pull out, possibly at CPAC(!).

Update: First in Missouri, third among Missouri conservatives.

Update: Geraghty tries to game out a Romney comeback. Big delegate lead for McCain + few WTA states left + the unlikelihood of Mitt blowing out Maverick in the proportional states + Huckabee still around to suck away conservative votes = The Reaper.

Let’s face it:

Here is the TRUE result of these elections, on the Republican side:

DEATH OF CONSERVATIVE TALK RADIO.

The big halo these so-called “pundits” had on their heads, collapsed. Rushing to Romney for help when it’s too late, when he was there all the time from the very beginning, proves only one thing:

When we lose in November it will teach us a lesson. We need to nominate a candidate who represents all 3 legs of the stool next time, none of our candidates did that convincingly this time around, not even Fred in reality. When he picked Spence Abraham to work on his campaign I knew there was a problem. We need to get behind guys like Coburn and Demint, they are the future.

echosyst on February 6, 2008 at 1:27 AM

Well, let’s see how things are going in late October. If you’re right, we’d have to hope enough Americans do NOT want HillaryCare to wreck the Dems in 2010 like they got wrecked in 1994.

Unfortunately, I think all the young vibrant numbskull voters actually want socialized medicine.

fiatboomer on February 6, 2008 at 1:22 AM

Brilliant!!!eleventy!!
Let’s conservatives nominate an utter dog of a candidate in order to lose to Hillary so that the libs will realize that they don’t want socialized healthcare after all.
Rove you magnificent bastard!

DEATH OF CONSERVATIVE TALK RADIO.

Indy Conservative on February 6, 2008 at 1:20 AM

Yeah, just like it died after Republicans lost in 1992 and Bill Clinton was President. They said Rush Limbaugh’s show was going to die after that too.

Conservative talk radio will never die, because it is the public voice of average conservative Americans such as myself. 10+ million listeners per day all across the country, most of them conservatives who enjoy having a powerful, public voice for their values and principles espoused among a sea of liberal, sensationalist nonsense on every other mass media format.

However, if you mean Conservative Talk Radio will die as a result of this election, because the liberal, socialists will bring back the Fairness Doctrine, then you may have a relevant point.

Is it too late for Romney to pull out, endorse Huckabee and let Huck collect the entire anti-McCain vote? Or should conservatives instead, in the remaining races, try and crash the Dem primaries and try and get Obama elected?

Whatever it is, I’m endorsing the Dems. McCain can talk tough on WOT all he wants, but if his senate track record is anything to go by, he’ll probably be brokering backroom deals with Iran, Hamas, KSA, Pakistan, Taliban et al – all in the name of bipartisanship bipolarship world peace. If you doubt me, just look at him on Gitmo, waterboarding and the like – he probably agrees with the judge who wanted court decisions to be delivered based on international precedents.

“The thought police would get him just the same. He had committed—would have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper—the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you.”

Enough said…. Game. Set. Match.

The candidates tried to walk a fine line with the immigrant issue. They put open border shills on their staff to try and recapture the Hispanic vote that Bush did. McCain did the same thing with Juan Hernandez.

There is no way conservatives will come out for McShamnesty. He will have to fight the dems for the liberals and since he is such a sack of crap liar, they’ll go with the dem candidate.

csdeven on February 6, 2008 at 1:32 AM

McCain and Huckabee – what a lineup!
All we need is Marv Thornberry and we’d have the ‘62 Mets!
The Dems, in this case, would be Koufax and Drysdale.

Well, the Pubbie death wish is now complete.
Seven hellish years of Bush’s inchoate “Compassionate Conservatism” crapola has worked its noxious magic on the GOP. Reaching across the aisle, hugging Ted Kennedy, kissing McCain’s ass, keeping the veto pen in Gore’s fabled lockbox, what else could we expect? And now we have a 3.1 trillion dollar budget.
Not too long ago, the Republicans were in the ascendency, now, as they veer left, they’re polling down around the Ted Bundy level.
Besides, what is the point of having two Liberal parties? How wasteful…it’s much more logical to merge! Then we can all destroy our economy together! That’s the way to build a bipartisan agenda – have one Party. Look how well it’s worked for Castro!
The Republicans have truly redefined the upper limits of “screwing the pooch”. They can go to hell…

I not only heard about it, they were all around me. A few days ago we had ice and light snow. Today it was 75 degrees and there was an ominous feeling in the air. The sky turned a sickening yellowish green and then got really dark before all hell broke loose. I’m anxious to learn how many tornadoes there really were. The civil defense sirens seem to wail nonstop. There were actually two lines of storms that rolled through. Over a several hour period we had new tornado warnings every few minutes. My wife and children spent the evening in a closet while I flipped between election returns and weather reports. Thankfully my family is safe and the only damage I’ve got is a tree across my driveway.

Not necessarily. The coservatives on the court are much younger than the Liberals. If McCain only lasts 4 years then is likely he would only get one pick and thats for the oldest liberal on the court right now. So isnt a real threat yet of that.

That is an interesting point. Let’s face it, most average folks are very uninformed or misinformed. The fact that McCain and Huckabee are even viable is proof of that. Political junkies like most of us are in the minority. I personally know very few people that are even qualified to vote in terms of their knowledge of the issues and the candidates.

Maybe they know something I don’t though. Maybe I should disengage and worry about my little corner of the world. All of my worrying doesn’t seem to be getting me much. I truly don’t think I can stay interested in politics during a McCain or Clinton term.

The most important thing though, is to pray that Obama turns down the vp and he very well may. Why play second fiddle, when he’s the real power broker of the party for the forseable future.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 6, 2008 at 1:49 AM

Agreed. I think Obama is well aware that Hillary would be a nightmare to work with. He’s no Gore, willing to put up with being trampled on at every turn. If, and it is a big if, Hillary takes the Dem nomination, I suspect she’ll go with a lapdog like Bill Richardson or Jim Webb.

Obama is a problem, but still Mac is better to beat him than Romney, in showing up his vacuity, inexperience and complete absence of serious achievements. Obama’s big weakness is his foreign policy cretinism – Mac will dynamite his Islamic appeasement conference for sure.

OH really? REAL CONSERVATIVE CREDS?

Like, I was an Independent during Reagan-Bush, I’m not trying to Return to Reagan-Bush..

Or… his COMPLETE makeover for this election?

come on, get real..

Someone like Haley Barbour or a Mark Sanford would help McCain more than Romney.

Chakra Hammer on February 6, 2008 at 1:59 AM

The dilution of the GOP has been going on for a while now. I believe we are seeing the end of it as we know it. The brave and strong(young and naive) “moderates” of the party have caved into the desire to be more like those hip Euro countries. The conservative branch has been pruned and discarded. Time for us to go 3rd party and fight the libertarians for 1% of the national votes.

Well done Rino/Moderates/DemLites? Hillary 08 sound good?

Chakra Hammer on February 6, 2008 at 1:52 AM

Mitt supporters aren’t McLiar, Rudy, Huck, or Fred supporters. We support ideals and look for candidates that closely espouse those ideals. If our candidate fails, we don’t start into the denial exercises.

McLiar will lose in November because conservatives will not support a liberal and the general electorate doesn’t like entrenched Washington insiders who lie, cheat, steal, and betray his base.

Mitt’s a Mormon and McLiar is a liar. Mitt made huge end roads in getting his name out there. he changed more minds than he alienated. And those people were mostly conservatives.

I find it sickening that you love to quote that poll time and again. A liar is more palpable than a Mormon. Sickening gibotry.

You’ve successfully listed all of the left-leaning Republican and liberal talking points! Great job!!! Do us all a favor and defect to the Green party. Rush has 12 million listeners, Mark Levin has like 4 million and Sean Hannity/Glenn Beck have numbers between the two. Put down the New York Times and go have your lobotomy finished.

DEATH OF CONSERVATIVE TALK RADIO.

The big halo these so-called “pundits” had on their heads, collapsed. Rushing to Romney for help when it’s too late, when he was there all the time from the very beginning, proves only one thing:

CONSERVATIVE TALK RADIO IS FULL OF HOT AIR!!

Romney’s not out, but he’s definitely down. Now, it just might be that he could take some sort of drastic action to improve his chances, and — maybe — still win this thing.

The only thing that might make a difference at this point is to find a good vice-president candidate that people like — one very conservative and earnest candidate that people will instinctively regard as a genuine conservative. This might lend Mitt enough authenticity as a conservative to still get the nomination.

Of course, this step is usually done only after the candidate wins his party nomination, but Mitt can’t really afford to wait.

Obviously one good vice-president candidate to lend conservative gravitas and authenticity would be Fred!

Downsides to Fred! a) A younger man would be nice in a Vice President b) Fred has shown no interest in running for Vice President. So there could be a better choice.

Of course, Fred! has his upsides too. a) He can be a very effective communicator b) csdeven’s head would explode

Of course, this is all a long shot. But it’s the only thing I could think of that might derail McCain. Unless Romney comes up with something to convince wavering conservatives to trust him over Huckabee, he’ll keep splitting the conservative vote and hand the election to McCain.

theregoestheneighborhood on February 6, 2008 at 2:22 AM

I said “Ha Ha”.

And since you’re apparently not interested in a scorched earth policy, that means you’ll be supporting McCain after your candidate failed after 13 months of underperforming?

I’d point out the irony of you lecturing anyone about class, but I know you wouldn’t get it.

You backed a losing horse, and so did I. Don’t try to pretend your loss was somehow more noble than mine, or that your reaction to it was any better. Mitt lost because many of the harsh criticisms I had of him were shared by many others… but I didn’t resort to using “scumbag” every time I mentioned his name.
