Open thread: California; Update: McCain wins Missouri; Update: Fox News calls California for McCain and Hillary; Update: Team Mitt plans “frank discussions” tomorrow

Results here. Whatever happens will steer the narrative tomorrow so we might as well open a thread. This is now must-win for Mitt; if McCain runs away with it, Romney’s got nothing meaningful to show for Super Tuesday. Here’s something fun to do while we wait: Scroll slowly down this list and compare the vote totals for the Democrats in each state to the totals for the GOP. Ask yourself how that bodes for fundraising during the general campaign.

Hillary’s had a reasonably good night thus far. But not good enough.

Update: With 87% reporting in Missouri, Huckabee leads McCain by 47 votes.

Update: Some sunshine for our special lady?

Update: Har. Romney’s camp says McCain underperformed.

Update: With 96% reporting in Missouri, Maverick’s pulled ahead to a 7,000-vote lead. Huckabee wanted/needed this not only for the delegates but to prove that his appeal isn’t limited to the south. The margin’s close enough that he sort of proved that anyway, although the winner-take-all element makes that a cold comfort.

Mitt? Third place, 23,000 votes off the pace.

Update: And now Fox calls Missouri for Maverick.

Update: Juan Williams says Obama leads Hillary among white men in California by 27 points, but Hillary leads big among Latinos.

Update: Have at it — the Republican and Democratic exit polls. The gender breakdowns favor Maverick and Hillary.

Update: And no sooner do I post that than Fox calls it for both of them. Big win for Mac, bigger win for the Glacier. Say goodnight, Mitt.

Update: Rove’s back-of-the-envelope estimate is that Mitt might finish third in total delegates for the night. McCain’s total is greater than Romney’s and Huckabee’s combined. Another interesting point from Rove: Obama won more states, but most of them were red states the Dems won’t carry in the general.

Update: The Messiah ekes out a 49-48 win in Missouri. As for Cali, say it with me, my friends. Never. Trust. Zogby.

zogby.png

Update: See-Dub helps Hewitt with the spin.

Update: Rumbles.

MSNBC’s John Yang says a Romney senior campaign official says “tomorrow will be a day of frank discussions on the campaign.”

Not quite a revelation, but the only news they have. A long day of meetings was already on the schedule long before the California news.

Yang says visit to Kansas on Friday is likely to be nixed.

Update: Si se puede!

Update: Bill Kristol thinks Mitt will pull out, possibly at CPAC(!).

Update: First in Missouri, third among Missouri conservatives.

Update: Geraghty tries to game out a Romney comeback. Big delegate lead for McCain + few WTA states left + the unlikelihood of Mitt blowing out Maverick in the proportional states + Huckabee still around to suck away conservative votes = The Reaper.

csdeven on February 6, 2008 at 12:17 AM

McCain is our Nominee. We got what we didnt want.

William Amos on February 6, 2008 at 12:17 AM

This is shaping up interestingly. Huckabee in the South, McCain in the Northeast, and Romney in the West. Look at what each have one: Romney’s gotten Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota, plus Michigan and Massachuessets. He may well get California. McCain almost lost Arizona to him, too. That’s a significant chunk of the country.

Huck’s gotten traction in Iowa and Missouri, plus the South. McCains gotten the Northeast.

What’s it all mean, Vern?

Vanceone on February 5, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Possibly a bloodbath in November if McCain is the nominee if those states actually translate any to electoral votes.

That’s a ridiculously early call. CNN is only reporting 15 percent of the precincts in and the vaunted exit polls include less than a thousand people.

One wonders if Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes did some nudging there or what.

Jimmie on February 6, 2008 at 12:18 AM

Look at it this way. Would most vote for an american McCain or a British Tony Blair as American President ?

William Amos on February 6, 2008 at 12:15 AM

Ideally, if this were a rational world, this would be our choices come November 2008

Democrat Ticket: McCain/Lieberman
Republican Ticket: Thompson/Romney

That would be great for this country. The debates would be substantive and focus on policies and the future of America. And I could respect both tickets, because they would both stay true to their values and what they stand for and not pander to groups which they don’t respect (McCain to Conservatives). Plus, I respect Joe Lieberman, even though I pretty much disagree with everything about him, except his stance on the Long War and Iraq.

While Rush and others are telling us Mitt is conservative, his campaign has ads in Florida slamming McCain for not supporting the prescription drug bill. It was Mitt who in 2002 passed out pink fliers which said, Mitt and Kerry wish you a great Pride Weekend!…All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference. Mitt mandated universal healthcare for Massachusetts, which is now in trouble and in need of federal assistance. Mitt is a phony hunter who raised the fee from $25 to $100 to get an FID card, which is required to buy a gun or even a can of mace. Mitt won Michigan in part by promising massive federal spending. And then there are all those flip-flops. If Rush had been pimping a real conservative instead of a faux conservative, he might have achieved a Salesmen of the Month award tonight. I regret he and Hannity didn’t put as much effort into Fred as they did Mitt.

Christoph on February 6, 2008 at 12:13 AM

Yes, but Australia is just getting in that little left hiccup that we are about to get here in the US. Once they realize what Kevin Rudd has done to their country, he will be gone as fast as you can say “Outback Steakhouse”. The same goes for us. Four years of Hillary or Obama, and we will be electing Republicans (the conservative ones, not McCains) for the next 20 years.

RW Wacko on February 6, 2008 at 12:24 AM

mikeyboss, that would be my personal favorite ticket. Well, my real personal fave was Thompson/Hunter, but it appears that’s not gonna happen, huh? Unfortunately he’s probably going to pick a Southerner religious conservative to try to shore up the South.

He ran a close 2nd here in AL, so hopefully he will decide that he can afford to put Giuli on the ticket with him…..

Or McCain/Hunter? That would help answer questions about the amnesty fiasco (and yeah, it was amnesty).

funky chicken on February 6, 2008 at 12:24 AM

Hunker down, the next 4 years are going to be a rough ride. The Bush tax cuts will expire, the AMT will kick in, and the death tax will be doubled. Inflation will skyrocket, the nnny state will create all kinds of new programs, and we will welcome in about 20 million new citizens for which us idiots that get up and go to work every day have to pay welfare benefits for.

And as much as I would hope that the dem’s in the whitehouse would get as much done as the dem’s in Congress, the coattails will be HUGE. Votes came in today 2 to 1 democrats.

We are going down in Nov, and we are going down BIG.

RightWinged on February 6, 2008 at 12:18 AM

With all due respect, this is the wrong attitude to have. Instead of hanging it up, the attitude should be strap em on and get ready to get active. Very, very active. Active as we all did with Amnesty last summer and active with educating, informing our fellow Americans about conservatism.

One politician and one political party does not determine whether America will rise or fall. If that is the case, then the US Consitution and the Declaration of Independence are pretty flimsy. We, the People, determine the future. Giving up, just because a Democrat is in office is not the way to go. The Democrats didn’t give up just, because President Bush won, did they? Do the Democrats and the Left have more backbone than Conservatives and the Right?

From some of the comments, it seems to be so.

This is not a time to despair, but a time to get energized and engaged even more. Obviously, the American public is apathetic about conservatism. The only way to change that is to take it upon ourselves to move the focus from sensationalism and tabloidization of politics and polls and “electibility” and “vote for us, because at least we’re better than them” and get back to focusing on policies and ideology and issues and explain them to people.

Inform, educate and get people engaged. That will determine our future. Not a President Hillary, not a President Obama and not a President McCain. We, the People, determine the future of our country. If we stay engaged, our country will not fall. However, if we give up, and allow the liberal socialists (McCain, Hillary, Obama) have free reign, then yes, our country will fall. But it will not be because of them, but because of us.

Obama was not projected to win CA (except for the one Rasmussen poll) nor the East coast. He did what he was supposed to do, kept Hillary to only winning typical liberal Clinton strongholds (Democratic old guard) and beating her in two that he was not supposed to win CT and DE. Not to mention they had her up in almost every state but two up til this morning. Remember she was “inevitable”. Also looks like she didn’t win MO, Obama did. NY, NJ, MA and CA are not a representation of the entire USA. Obama did a better job of winning that than Hillary did or can in the General.

With all your whining and griping, Republicans, you deserve to lose the next election. You probably will.

McCain is probably your candidate and if not him, Huckabee. Don’t like it? Won’t work for them? Won’t donate?

Well, say hello President Clinton or Obama. Them’s the breaks and you have no one to blame more than yourself.

Christoph on February 6, 2008 at 12:36 AM

BTW one internet pronostication looking for conservative to work for. I have good skills and know what Im talking about.

Hucksters and paulians need not ask me for my resume.

JustTruth101 on February 6, 2008 at 12:38 AM

You know, I can live with President Clinton.

Then again, I remember that Congress didn’t simply evaporate and leave Ultimate Power to the White House.

Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. John McCain will win California primaries, CNN projects.

bnelson44 on February 6, 2008 at 12:39 AM

I could literally go on for days, but what the hell is the point.

RightWinged on February 6, 2008 at 12:30 AM

Look, I agree with you. I am frustrated as well. But, you’re advocating that we give up. That is not the American way. My blog is AmeriCAN-DO Attitude and that is what keeps me going: focusing on a CAN-DO attitude about things. America itself was created by an attitude of not giving up and going against all odds. The Revolutionary War looked lost. The Civil War looked like a lost. WWII looked lost. Iraq looked lost. But we are America and we don’t give up.

Hell, if I’m not convincing enough (and I know I am not), just take a break from politics for a while and read some military books and/or military blogs and read about People You Should Know. Whenever I tend to want to give up and think things are too tough, I look these men and women for inspiration.

But, again, understand, I completely understand the frustration. I go through cycles of anger, depression, despair and then come to the conclusion “what’s the damn point, I give up” numerous times during the week and sometimes even numerous times during the day. But, then I listen to Rush, read the transcripts on his website when I miss the show and then read milblogs and I rejuvenate myself again. If they are not giving up when they faced greater obstacles than me, then I sure as hell am not going to give up.

Again dont shoot me Im just the messenger Im like a rain man version of Nostrodomus predicting a huckaplague and a McCainerism by my prognostocation skills. I didnt make this happen only guessed it would.

William Amos on February 6, 2008 at 12:34 AM

I think maybe you did cause those things. My friend can make distant galaxies explode just by blinking really hard.

Of course I won’t have no one to blme but myself, because if McCain or Huckabee, or BOTH, are the ticket, then I will be voting Democrat.

Enoxo on February 6, 2008 at 12:40 AM

So you’re staying home then?

fiatboomer on February 6, 2008 at 12:31 AM

That depends on McShamnesty’s rhetoric in the coming months.

csdeven on February 6, 2008 at 12:40 AM

If Rush had been pimping a real conservative instead of a faux conservative, he might have achieved a Salesmen of the Month award tonight. I regret he and Hannity didn’t put as much effort into Fred as they did Mitt.

flyfisher on February 6, 2008 at 12:19 AM

Yeah, brilliant. Rush basically gave a non-endorsement endorsement of Fred Thompson and it had no influence. Now he is being told that he has all this influence and he should have used it to tout Romney.

Nice consistency there.

Again, I understand people are angry, and Rush is an easy scapegoat for our current situation, but really, this is getting ridiculous.

Michael in MI on February 6, 2008 at 12:42 AM

Damn, how are the polls so F’ed up!?!?!!? Hill gonna win by like almost 20 points in CA or something? WTF? Huge Asian and Hispanic turnout or something? Illegals? Shenanigans with no ID required (I’ve lived there and seen it in action) CA laws? How can the polls be so far off?

RW Wacko on February 6, 2008 at 12:30 AM

California isn’t a winner take all state, it’s delegates are by district. This only happened last year, so Hillary could win by numbers and still lose by way of Obama receiving more delegates. The democrats Gerrymandered the state way back in the 90’s so that the population heavy coastal districts made the state appear to be more democrat/liberal than it really is. Depending on which districts Obama carries he could conceivably garner more delegate than Hillary even with a fraction of the voters.

In other words the democrat gerrymandering of the 90’s could come back to bite her in the a$$ pretty hard. I don’t know if it’s going to but it certainly could.

Christoph on February 6, 2008 at 12:36 AM

Absolutely. It’s sickening, this whining.

Your core values, values that should transend party, is what you fight for. If your values end when your guy loses, your values aren’t worth a spit.

From California, Congrats to John McPalpatine – betrayer and backstaber. Reach out with your feelings.

General Election 2008:

SOB versus Bitch

ashleymatt on February 6, 2008 at 12:46 AM

I’m reminded about the 2000 elections when Bush won the primaries.
I wasn’t too happy then about the candidates and I feel the same way about the candidates now as I did then.

Deja vu all over again again

If purists like you keep trashing McCain I suppose the dems will get to win in a walk in November. Thanks for that! Protect the unborn! Support the troops! Elect a democrat!

funky chicken on February 6, 2008 at 12:33 AM

So, the purists don’t have the umph to help Mitt win but they do have the umph to make McShamnesty lose?

Wake up. There is little substantive difference between McLiar and the dems. The general election will expose McCain as a single issue candidate and will lose in November. The MSM has given him a complete pass on his lies and that party will end the second he is the nominee.

Look in the mirror and thank yourself for being a part of the shame that he has foisted on the republican party.
