McCain wets himself over Mitt’s knock on Bob Dole; Update: “Bob Dole is an American hero,” says Mitt

posted at 10:57 am on February 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

“It’s probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me,” sayeth Romney of Dole’s missive to Rush Limbaugh, explaining that McCain surely doesn’t want to be associated with the safe choice/lamb to the slaughter candidate of 1996. The “straight talk” translation: Romney doesn’t respect Bob Dole’s war service. It’s as cynical and dishonest a distortion as Maverick’s twisting of Romney’s point about timetables was, but unlike Mitt, McCain knows what this election is about. Anything he can do to drag the debate towards military service and the surge, he’ll do. Even something as stupid as this.

That said, after reading this, my position on the Limbaugh/Dole dust-up is decidedly more nuanced than it was yesterday. Deep breaths, Rush.

Update: Tangentially related, I’m obliged to say that it sounds like McCain is getting a bad rap on this. He’s using the reporters’ words to tease the other candidates, including his pals Fred and Rudy (who may have been sitting there next to him on the bus at the time). No ill intent as far as I can see.

Update: Mitt covers his flank from McCain’s moronic smear.

Gotta love the “straight-talk” express tranlation of that.

As a veteran, I am really getting sick of people assuming that just because someone was in the military or a POW or breathed a day on Active Duty, they are above being criticized or that it means they are automatically military experts.

I say again… Benedict Arnold was a war hero. Timothy McVeigh was a model infantry soldier during the first Gulf War. CPL Lauren is currently on the run for KILLING a fellow marine… so much for military service. it helps, it can make a difference but it is not the end all at all. According to some folks logic on McCain and his military service, Arnold, McVeigh and Lauren would both be viable candidates. Talk about Scary!

TOPV on February 5, 2008 at 11:02 AM

What he says is true, but he maybe should have been a little more tactful in his speech about Bob Dole. The last person you want writing a letter for you? I don’t think so. A lot of people still love Bob Dole, and Bob Dole knows it.

Regardless… GO MITT!

I saw this this morning and I thought it was a terrific interview.

McCain is a horses’ ass and I’m starting to think he is a serial prevaricator. There is no way that anyone, except an unhinged loon, could claim that Mitt was disparaging Dole’s service in that interview. If anyone needs to apologize it’s him.

Mac’s approval ratings are destined to tank – if only Mitt could hang in there long enough for it to happen.

McCain deploys the military service card every bit as adeptly as Jesse Jackson does the racist card. I anticipate him rushing to defend Murtha’s excesses using the same card. If elected, he will probably pardon Duke Cunningham.

Once again, Romney makes a good point which resonates: Senators don’t have experience actually administrating. They can only point to accomplishments of arguing for and against legislation, which is why governors usually get elected over senators. Romney simply stated what I’ve considered common knowledge. In no way was he disrespecting Bob Dole, except in pointing out why Dole received the nomination in his time, and why he failed. That is (pardon me if this is protected by copy write by McCain)straight talk.
McCain attacks Romney with lies,
Romney ‘attacks’ McCain by telling the truth-who do you want for your President?

Funny how the candidate who sucks up to the liberal media more than any candidate, on either side, rips the other guys for appearing on conservative talk radio.

Why do you think all these liberal newspapers endorsed McCain? Because they like him (and get to know him) personally. He hangs out with them on his bus trips. He becomes friends with writers from Politico & the NY Times.

McCain’s entire comeback was media driven. He finished 4th in Iowa, but they spin it that he “tied for 3rd”, and every article about him from early December until the New Hampshire primary portrayed him as “the comeback kid” and “surging”.

I respect McCain’s service to our country. I do not respect his smug, arrogant attitude, his liberal leanings, his blatant distortions of others’ records, and him getting down on his knees for liberal reporters.

AP, this is why you can’t get what Rush said by reading what someone else said that he said. That said, Rush’s point yesterday, to which the article referred, and which gives you pause, is something that he has been saying since 2006. It is not something new since McCain has been getting close to the nomination. He has always said, “the dirty little secrete is, the Dems. won’t pull out of Iraq because they don’t want to be saddled with defeat.” This new info might help nuance your nuance. I’m not saying whether or not Rush is right, just that he has been making this point for years, and the article seems to make it sound as though Rush has been teetering on edge, and yesterday’s comments proved that he has jumped off that edge. That is not true, and dishonest.

Hey Mcguyver, AP gives good advice here. I never used to parse the HA posts by author but now I do. After AP’s silly snarky posts about Fred (and Patton, and Cowboy Hats…) and his obvious lack of understanding of American society outside of the North East, I started to avoid. Then I realized the authors names were in the bylines (for some reason I never bothered looking before). Now I can avoid AP when needed. Some of his posts contain interesting information, you just have to ignore his writing and go for the meat. HA retained some value for me after that. His comment about FIRING Rumsfeld in the debate tore it for me. That was truly disrespectful.

Romney’s comment revealed a very important issue for voters to think about. The sacrificial lamb. Voters should resent the idea that Republicans plan to lose. Would promote a candidate that is doomed.

Yeah, you really did miss it. McCain is the one who twisted Romney’s words in both instances. AP is saying McCain hit the same heights of cynicism that he did the first time he twisted Romeny’s words. And the follow-up is that McCain “gets” that the vast, apparently sheep-like middle of the GOP is only voting for McCain’s war hero status. Thus, all roads lead there, however convoluted the path.

Let’s start with Fox rots. It has done nothing to help the conservative party. We need a conservative station not one that is called fair and balanced and has Geraldo and Sean smiling at Coulter while endorsing Hillary.
I am disgusted witht them all. It’s bad enough the majority of voters don’t even know the issues but a supposedly conservative network did nothing to really halt the McCain flow. Thanks Fox and thanks Ann. Laura had enough sense to say she’d vote for McCain if she had to, which is what it looks like we’ll have to do.
Fox, do us a favor and keep Ann off your show, too many ignorant people are actually following her ridiculous advise. And someone with money give us a real conservative network.

Mitt can buy my vote with some tax cuts, social spending cuts, increased military spending, and some investments in a good strong fence with a wide door.

Oh, and McCain was being dishonest.

Just so we’re straight.

Slublog on February 5, 2008 at 12:04 PM

Mitt said on Laura(who sucks) that Mav ought not have Bob Dole speak on his behalf. First off Romenee, when you stop gettin woodshedded by THE STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS, you can give commentary on how to run a campaign. Until then, zip it. Sixty-Million dollars later, he just doesn’t get it. In the morning when the dust settles, buy yourself a one way ticket home to loserville.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 5, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Romney really needs to stop throwing out the I’m sorry lines when ever McQueeg gets pissed. That’s just a permanent state of mind for the old guy.

thekingtut on February 5, 2008 at 11:55 AM

Yes, that does bother me about Mitt. Wish he’d point out the dishonesty in McCain’s accusation rather than showing the white feather.

First sign that you’re a McCain follower – attacking Fox (specifically Hannity, who said to Coulter that she was wrong about favoring Hilary over McCain). If you actually watched something, rather than listen to hearsay/secondary sources, you might be able to prevent little episodes like this one. Fox is annoyingly tabloid-y, but c’est la vie, I’m afraid.

P.S. We don’t have a “Conservative” Party, limey.

FOx News drank the kool-aid of the liberal media. It was bound to happen. When they started broadcasting Micheal Jackson 24/7 I switched it off and very really watch it anyomre. Their FBN is another faliure that I can not stand. The 20% ownership of Fox media by the Saudi Prince I think was the tipping point. 9/11 changed alot of things one was Fox news.

100% agreed unseen. I haven’t had a TV for years, but back when I did, I tuned out FOX NEWS. They are more of a tabloid news station than a hard news station.

Then blogs came along–but they too have started the slide in MSM style news. Sad but true. The MSM style must be like black hole–sucking in everything around it.

I still link to FOX via the internet but the real news stories are few and far between.

The slide to liberalism can best be compared to what is called a value trap on Wall Street. That is were it looks like a great deal but in fact it is a decreasing asset and the “deal” just gets better and better has it goes to zero. See NYT as an example.

California is not winner take all. Why are folks saying if Mitt wins a squeaker and splits the delegates that the race has changed? I was never good at math, but Maverick will win at least five winner take all states which is like 250 delegates. He leads in six other states and is competitive everywhere except Utah/Colorado. Do the math people, this thing is over.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 5, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Rush is lambasting McCain over this. McCain is lying about the fact that Dole was contacting Rush to endorse him. McCain is so desperate he will lie about anything.

How is getting captured and spending the majority of the war in jail make you a War Hero? Don’t get me wrong, I respect his service but…he won no great battles, he lead no great counter offensives, he did not make any last stands. He got shot down, captured and endured the whims of his jailers. He handled himself well in a very diffucult place and his conduct showed great character but he is not a Patton, McArther, IKE, Murphy, Lee, Grant etc etc.

Romney: “It’s probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me,

McCain:Governor Romney’s attack on Bob Dole is disgraceful, and Governor Romney should apologize. Bob Dole is a war hero who has spent his life in service to this nation and nobody has worked harder to build the Republican Party. Bob Dole deserves the respect of every American and certainly every Republican.
—–
McCain was defending the person that is Bob Dole. The person Mitt attacked. Bob Dole was a war hero and a good Republican. Is he really the last person Mitt would want defending him?

McCain’s words are being truncated in this post, to make a point about distorting words to make a point.

Mitt Romney has badmouthed Ronald Reagan, John McCain and Bob Dole in this primary. Nice work genius, why not call Barbara Bush loose.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 5, 2008 at 12:25 PM

It was a stupid thing to say, and Romney recognized it and apologized.

That doesn’t change the fact that it was a stupid personal attack on Bob Dole.

“McCain wets himself” is a stupid personal attack too, but par for the course here, I suppose.

Good on Romney for being man enough to apologize for his stupid snark.

dish- I believe Dole’s people released it after they realized Rush wasn’t going to use it on the show. That’s what I understood him to say on Hannity and Colmes last night. Dole didn’t consider it to be personal.

MayBee on February 5, 2008 at 12:33 PM

If Rush didnt bury the letter, there would have been no need for Dole to put him on double secret probation.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 5, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Thanks MayBee. Rush said he got the email at 2:45. Does Dole think so highly of himself that Rush should drop everything and discuss Mr. Dole’s thoughts right then and there? Maybe they should have pre-empted the next two hours to discuss this?
