Video: The semi-obligatory “Best of the Super Bowl ads” post
posted at 12:38 pm on February 4, 2008 by Allahpundit
Not fully obligatory, but on a surprisingly slow Super Tuesday Eve it’s close enough. I’ve embedded the top five as ranked by USA Today’s focus group but you’re well advised to watch them on the Ad Meter page itself. Not only are all 55 spots collected there but you can follow the demographic lines below each commercial as it proceeds to see where men and women and viewers younger and older than 45 split. Surprisingly, tastes tend to run very similar.
Can’t argue with number one. What special magic, my friends, lies in the confluence of dogs, horses, and terrible tasteless beer?
Update: They got their money’s worth.

Blowback

Animals do love beer.

Personally, I preferred the Richard Simmons near-death bridgestone ad.
marc@hubsandspokes on February 4, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Dude did I just sit and watch several commericals without going to get a beer ?
William Amos on February 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Pepsi won.
(Thanks, Pepsi, for dumping Britney)
jgapinoy on February 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM
The Bridgestone/squirrel one shoulda used the drama-prarie-dog music during his scream.
jgapinoy on February 4, 2008 at 12:48 PM
The best commercial wasn’t even a commercial. It was the Terminator coming out and kicking the Fox Football Robot’s butt.
Queasy on February 4, 2008 at 12:50 PM
I mean, in my opinion.
jgapinoy on February 4, 2008 at 12:54 PM
But before we accept your opinion, as an advertising analyst to be trusted, we need to know: which ad does Hugh Hewitt endorse?
Frozen Tex on February 4, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Pepsi!
And a SECOND LOOK AT HANK!
shooter on February 4, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Whichever one Mitt likes.
jgapinoy on February 4, 2008 at 12:58 PM
I liked the one for E-trade with the baby, the second one with the clown. “Gotta say, I underestimated the creepiness factor”
Jeff_McAwesome on February 4, 2008 at 1:02 PM
I totally agree.
TX Mom on February 4, 2008 at 1:03 PM
Clydesdale–magnificent animal.
In my opinion, of course.
davidk on February 4, 2008 at 1:08 PM
Gotta go with the Coca-Cola, Charlie-Brown-gets-the-prize one. Adorable. Long live Charlie Brown.
Pasalubong on February 4, 2008 at 1:09 PM
I thought the funniest one was the one where the dude is driving and he swerves to miss a small animal…and then he keeps driving and he swerves to miss Alice Cooper with his pet snake…and he keeps driving and sees Sweatin to the Oldies guy and hits the gas….
Post that one…please
Roger Waters on February 4, 2008 at 1:10 PM
Must…Kill…Lincoln.
BohicaTwentyTwo on February 4, 2008 at 1:12 PM
Clydesdales … the makers of Budweiser beer.
BowHuntingTexas on February 4, 2008 at 1:13 PM
I liked the Will Farrell beer ad the best.
packsoldier on February 4, 2008 at 1:15 PM
Yeah, that would taste about right.
Frozen Tex on February 4, 2008 at 1:15 PM
Where’s Iron Man? That rocked!
Vote Sauron 08 on February 4, 2008 at 1:17 PM
Coke will always be better than Pepsi.

FedEx was my favorite.

I liked the Mitt Romney ad that ran in our area.
ErikTheRed on February 4, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Oh, and if “Sales Genie” is publicly traded????
.
SELL YOUR STOCK NOW!!
.
Worst ever.
shooter on February 4, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Can’t go wrong tapping into everyone’s bobophobia. The two baby stock trader ads were very amusing – I thought that the mouth/facial animation versus the audio was very impressive.
But I have to admit that I’d have to give my #1 pick to the Bud Light cavemen ad (“wheel sucks… bottle opener sucks”). For whatever reason, it seems to have been pulled on some of the bigger sites?
bofh on February 4, 2008 at 1:46 PM
Nah, I’ll take the talking stain ad from Tide. That was the best.
matd on February 4, 2008 at 1:47 PM
Fed Ex’s ad was great.
Planet Boulder on February 4, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Iron Man looks Sa-Weet!
And the Etrade baby hiring the clown was great.
My wife loved the Justin Timberlake ad, simply because of Justin Timberlake.
conservativejack on February 4, 2008 at 1:58 PM
I was watching the Super Bowl with my dad and we both agreed that the two commercials they played were highly stereotypical, to the point where if we were liberals, we’d have been Outrageously outraged!
“If you don’t double you sales, you’re fired!”
“But I have seven kids to feed! (said in stereotypical Indian accent)”
conservativejack on February 4, 2008 at 2:00 PM
My vote goes to the Budweiser dog training Clydesdales. The best one guaranteed to get attention was the Danica Patrick ‘Go Daddy’ spot. Admit it. How many of y’all pulled out the lap top and went to the web site to view the whole ad?
Just A Grunt on February 4, 2008 at 2:03 PM
My favorite was the one that slammed Justin Timberlake’s ‘nads into the mailbox three times – hard. Loved it.
Redhead Infidel on February 4, 2008 at 2:04 PM
who cares mccain is winning the delegate count
custer on February 4, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Budweiser is awesome. The unique mixture of barley and rice hops give it a great taste.
Christoph on February 4, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Bud’s “Wheel Sucks!” was good, if not a little derivative of FedEx’s past caveman ad.
Cuffy Meigs on February 4, 2008 at 2:31 PM
I agree with all of the above linked commercials…but I think my absolute fave was the Talking Stain. I just couldn’t quit giggling at that one. Probably because it reminded me of the scene in BRUCE ALMIGHTY where Bruce makes Evan talk just like that during his newscast.
Blessed gibberish!
tickleddragon on February 4, 2008 at 2:41 PM
drive by post alert—
sorry, no time to sit and talk, but by far, the best ad of all night was the running gag with the Terminator crashing through the NFL Robo guy. The whole family enjoyed that all night long, waiting to see if the Terminator was going to attack Robo NFL guy, if Robo guy was gonna bring enforcements, etc…
A perfect way to promo the Terminator show! So, that’s my vote for best ad last night.
Have a great day everyone!

And they made what I consider to be the best superbowl commercial ever for the 2002 Superbowl, just after 9/11.
DaveS on February 4, 2008 at 2:52 PM
You’re right. I actually backed up and watched that twice!
Blacklake on February 4, 2008 at 2:58 PM
Thanks for making me tear up at work. I’d forgotten how simple, but touching, that commercial was. BTW, I know I’ve said this before, but Budweiser only buys American made products, just FYI.
hollygolightly on February 4, 2008 at 3:10 PM
During the playoffs, I was wondering what that NFL robot was all about. It made no sense. But, after the Terminator robot burst out an started kicking butt, I went “Ah Hah, Now I get it…”
I missed what happened when the three NFL robots went after the Terminator… any updates?
AverageJoe on February 4, 2008 at 3:12 PM
..and not one bloating or Tampon ad in the bunch! (high five).
Hening on February 4, 2008 at 3:17 PM
That Pepsi commercial sucked. I was sitting here trying to figure out who would even like it. Oh yeah…the same mindless people who liked the SNL skit in the first place.
Levinite on February 4, 2008 at 3:56 PM
I loved the one with the wish fairy that gets eaten by the spider. (Careerbuilder, I think?) The expression in the eyes of the spider clinched it. I haven’t laughed that hard in ages.
I think it’s scored dead last in every poll I’ve seen.
Tanya on February 4, 2008 at 4:11 PM
Clydesdale was the best. The Coke commercial with Stewie and Underdog was great! I honestly would love to see the Frank and Louie commercials come back.
Mooseman on February 4, 2008 at 7:08 PM
No doubt about. Dogs and horses own the Superbowl.
RedWinged Blackbird on February 4, 2008 at 7:13 PM
AverageJoe, lets hope that is the end of the Fox robots.
Annoying, they are.

The mouse jumping out of the wall scared the crap out of me LOL!
Bladerunner1701 on February 5, 2008 at 1:37 AM
I cannot believe that I am the only one here who thought that the Audi commercial that mimmiced the Horse’s head scene from Godafather 1 was the best commercial ever.
Second look at Mr Woltz !!!!!
Joey1974 on February 5, 2008 at 10:27 AM
AP, I’ll have you know that Bud has lots of taste. Too bad it’s all bad.
