New Mitt ad: Hillary = McCain

Not on Iraq or abortion or votes on judicial appointments, but close enough. This meme has legs and this spot is deliciously slick. So why is it only airing online?

To avoid backlash in case Mitt loses tomorrow
William Amos on February 4, 2008 at 5:16 PM
If John McCain wins the nomination I WILL PAY TO AIR THAT AD on National TV.
EJDolbow on February 4, 2008 at 5:17 PM
It may be effective and if McCain can we stopped to preserve conservatism, fine. I `ll jump on-board the Mitt train. Call this step one.
Next step is organizing so we can minimize the damage done by President Hillary Clinton.

You can bet that if Hillary and McCain are the nominees, something similar will most definitely be airing on TV – frequently.

The ad’s full of lies & half-truths.
You just showed us the clip in which McCain & Hillary promised a debate on their many policy differences.
Just a few years ago, Mitt was so far left he was closer to Hillary than he was to McCain.

To me its not McCain vs Hillary its McCain vs Osama
If we elect a dem to the White House Osama gets a huge boost as the drop the war on terror. A vote for a dem is a vote to end the WOT.
I refuse to give Osama an inch even if it means I have to vote for McCain.

I like this line of attack against that sack of crap McLiarliarpantsonfire.
csdeven on February 4, 2008 at 5:28 PM
Blocking conservative judges? Based on a rumor about one judge, while McCain promised to appoint strict constructionist judges. Will Hillary?
jgapinoy on February 4, 2008 at 5:29 PM
Mitt needs to put that ad on TV. That’s been one of my big problems with Mitt, he’s being too damn nice and cordial.
doubleplusundead on February 4, 2008 at 5:29 PM
This is BS.
McCain voted against the tax cuts, as he explained at the time, largely on account of the fact that there were no spending cuts being considered. Hillary wants to “take profits” and redistribute them. McCain wants to make the tax cuts permanent, and Hillary wants to go back to the rates that applied under Bill’s administration, if not higher. Exactly which conservative judges has McCain blocked? Didn’t the Gang of 14 allow all but three or four appellate judges through, and preserve the filibuster (we might need it)? Also, what happened to guns? Oh yeah, Romney doesn’t want to talk about that. What about health care policy? Hmmm…Romneycare = Hillarycare 2.0; he doesn’t talk about that either. What about government spending? McCain’s pretty good, and Hillary’s a bit of a porker. How about free trade? CAFTA? McCain-yes, Hillary-no. I could go on and on, but I think I’ve made my point. Apparently none of these things matter, in addition to abortion and Iraq, if you think Hillary and McCain are even close to the same on issues.
Big S on February 4, 2008 at 5:29 PM
Oh, that ad is great. Why the heck is this only running on line? It’s waaaay better than those boring and pointless ads he’s running comparing his experience directly to Hillary.
This one kills too birds with one stone.
Buy Danish on February 4, 2008 at 5:29 PM
He’s talking about lower courts, and probably a smack at Gang of 14.
doubleplusundead on February 4, 2008 at 5:30 PM
And obviously you’d believe him if he said the sky was red. He’s a liar. Has been a liar. And will continue to be a liar.
And btw…anything that lets illegals stay here is AMNESTY. Repeating the meme doesn’t make it truth.
tickleddragon on February 4, 2008 at 5:32 PM
If we had no had the gang of 14 stop the nuclear option then filibusters would be gone and Anmesty would be a fact.
William Amos on February 4, 2008 at 5:32 PM
Good points!
So there is no substantive truth in the ad. I’m disappointed with Mr. Moral Romney, who says he approved the ad.
jgapinoy on February 4, 2008 at 5:33 PM
MccShamnesty is for amnesty. That POS has had 20 years to fix the borders and he hasn’t done it. His amnesty bill would never have secured the borders. And he said a week ago he would sign his amnesty bill if it came before him.
Wise up dude! What we want is the borders secured. PERIOD. After that, we will deal with the illegals. McLiar will never do that. He will sign the first comprehensive nonsense that comes down the pipe and the borders will never get secured.
csdeven on February 4, 2008 at 5:33 PM
I wish republicans could get this worked up trying to keep the dems out of office.
William Amos on February 4, 2008 at 5:34 PM
BTW I have to laugh at some logic here. OMG McCain is like Hillary so if McCain is our Nominee lets sit and an let HILLARY become president !
William Amos on February 4, 2008 at 5:35 PM
McCain was playing the democrat game of class politics when he opposed the tax cuts. Chris Wallace nailed him on his lie yesterday. McCain NEVER mentioned the spending. He said it was a tax cut for the rich. PERIOD!
csdeven on February 4, 2008 at 5:35 PM
jgapinoy, that’s what would make McCain a liar. His legislation didn’t secure the border first. It required the govt. to do a full background check and find a reason not to let the illegal alien stay. If it failed, which everyone knew it would (think DMV) the illegal got at least temporary legal status.
And Congress has been trying to defund the border fence ever since.
amerpundit on February 4, 2008 at 5:35 PM
Hahahaha
Sorry, but I just can’t take seriously anyone who still uses the stupid “War on Terror” tag.

Oh, I’m sorry. It is wrong and evil to comment on someone else’s record. That’s an ‘attack ad’ and running them hurts puppies and makes baby Jesus cry. Or so say those who wish to hide their actions as borne out in their voting records.
TheGoblinKing on February 4, 2008 at 5:36 PM
Not true. The “nuclear option” being discussed at the time wouldn’t have gotten rid of filibusters altogether, but only when it came to judicial confirmations.
Hollowpoint on February 4, 2008 at 5:37 PM
I left out that the check had to be done within 24 hours.
amerpundit on February 4, 2008 at 5:37 PM

McCain was not for securing the border first. Only after the bill was shot down in flames did he tack right. I believe the exact quote was something like “Fine, if they want their f*#$!ng fence they’ll get their f*#$!ng fence.” Clearly the words of someone who’s on board with the issue.
ErikTheRed on February 4, 2008 at 5:46 PM
And because it pleases the right’s version of the Kos Kids, but would piss off the mass of voters who know that Hillary=McCain is a lunatic’s formulation. Mitt never thought anything remotely like that until he decided that, stupid as it is, it worked with some of the excitables.

csdeven on February 4, 2008 at 5:52 PM
Of course they don’t matter: for the charlatans it is all about egoism and has nothing to the GOP or logical argument. There’s so much BS being posted about McCain here it is difficult to breathe. Only the most shallow charlatan could compare him with Clinton.
McCain has never voted for tax increases. Remember McCain-Saxton. McCain has a stronger record on free trade than Romney, who was advocating protectionism in Michigan only last month. McCain trumps Romney on the tax issue, and is light years from Clinton. But facts or conservative principles no longer seem to count for anything, only the shrilling of demented anti-McCain bigots.
Pax americana on February 4, 2008 at 5:58 PM
If it ain’t lies…it’s misleading at best.
It says McCain voted against Bush tax cuts, but doesn’t mention that McCain DID vote for them (nor did it mention WHY he originally was against them)
It says McCain blocked conservative judges…LIE. It was BECAUSE of McCain, and the Gang of 14, that Alito and Roberts were confirmed.
It doesn’t mention Mitt Romney voted FOR a national gas tax. Nor does it mention his total turn-around, a-la Kerry, on abortion.

McCain did vote against them. He was one of only two Republicans, one changing his party later on, to vote against them.
AP:
The second time it was because the war in Iraq expenses were unknown, the first because he though they favored the wealthy — a Liberal argument.

Look we are at war. Thousands have already died. If Im going to ask US troops to go out and fight for my freedoms then I will NOT give any conservatives a few pass to sit on their asses at home while they bleed.
They are paying the price so it really urks me to see conservative say they will throw away their votes for president because they dislike the choices. If we have to ask them to risk it all I dont feel bad asking conservatives to get off their butts and support them.
You have a choice. You can make a difference. I hate the choices as well but damn it I will not surrender all just because we conservatives blew this election. My concern is for THEM I care not one whit about silly political stances in this country.
To quote a famous wise woman “suck it up” and start acting like true conservatives than sniving democrats.

Roger Waters on February 4, 2008 at 6:07 PM
McCain campaigned in 2000 with a tax cut that, while smaller than Bush’s, would use some of the surplus at the time to help pay off Social Security and other entitlement shortfalls. Yes, he’s voted against, and spoken out against Bush’s tax cuts from time to time, but he’s been consistent in two areas:
1.) that as much tax relief as possible be targeted at the middle class.
2.) that any tax cuts be paid for, either with an increase in a different tax, or preferably, by decreasing government spending.
This may not be your ideal tax policy, but it’s light years away from the Hillary and the vast majority of the Dems.

Pax americana on February 4, 2008 at 6:13 PM
He’s also hypocritically attacked Mitt for not endorsing the Bush tax cuts at the time, even though McCain voted consistently against them.
Besides tax cuts, he’s overall not good on taxes. A 50 cents tax on gasoline to fight global warming? Ugh.
amerpundit on February 4, 2008 at 6:15 PM
Thank you dp…(people can call mw whatever they want, but I draw the line at “liberal”) :-)
I’m as disappointed as the next conservative around here at the apparent direction the GOP is going. But then, the Democrats don’t seem any surer of themselves. I would almost think an “alternative” candidate like Ron Paul would find this situation a golden opportunity, but that’s not happening either.
I’m also ticked that McCain is getting bashed every which way, and Romney gets a pass on his liberalism.
It kills me that people like Rush and Coulter, and a lot of people here, talk about McCain as if he’s “out to destroy the GOP”. The party has tilted towards the center. McCain is riding that wave, but he didn’t create it.

Except he didn’t. What he said was, he couldn’t vote for a tax cut that left such a “tax burden” on the middle class (and by the way, someone get one of the Republicans to teach McCain why tax cuts for the rich work waay better than tax cuts for the poor).
It’s about time – this ad should have been out six months ago.
P.S.
To
The crumbling of the GOP stems from exactly your position – the “We have to win, no matter what” position, by which I mean, “Principles be damned!” If we don’t win as Republicans, we don’t win. If we sell out our values, if we decide to overlook not just one or two poor decisions, but an entire career of strident “maverick”-ism, then we’ve already lost.
Which is why Goldwater is infinitely better than Johnson – if only because he stuck to his principles (and, by the way, was lambasted as a racist, a fascist, a warmonger; he lost, but look what followed).

Very nice ad! I’d like to see a nice, broad television ad buy for that one. I think it’s about as close as you can get to laying out the problems with McCain in a “bumper sticker” style that sticks in your head.
Beatnik Joe on February 4, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Alito doesn’t get confirmed without McCain’s gang of fourteen compromise. Possibly the most openly conservative supreme court justice ever to sit on the bench, and McCain played a pivotal role in putting him there. Yet he routinely gets excoriated for it by Republicans.
RightOFLeft on February 4, 2008 at 6:49 PM
The big difference being there won’t be a huge split depending on who the nominee is. They’ll rally around the nominee whether it’s Clinton or Obama. I don’t see any such gelling for the GOP.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand the dilemma for conservatives here. How could I not? I’m a Democrat that will, 99.99% chance (unless Obama gives up on Socialized care, amnesty and withdrawal from Iraq), be voting for a Republican in November.
I have my own ideologies that I won’t betray, but I also see where we are as a country and how important this next election is. So regardless of how much I dislike all 4 frontrunners, I’ll pick the least of the evils for the good of our country.
