Romney for president! He’s the true conservative!
Dash on February 4, 2008 at 7:51 PM
… because I’m running in Massachusetts?
xyzzy on February 4, 2008 at 7:51 PM
Geez.
Slublog on February 4, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Weak. McCain would stab Reagan in the back given half a chance.IMHO.
bbz123 on February 4, 2008 at 7:54 PM
That was a “geez” of frustration with our current crop of candidates, not with the advertisement.
Just so we’re clear.
Slublog on February 4, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Wait, was it Romney who was the foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution? I can’t remember, my friends.
Does McCain really think this will sink Mitt?
NTWR on February 4, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Shouldn’t this be red meat?

Well I still think Romney’s a true conservative and McCain’s a commie and please don’t confuse me with the facts!

doubleplusundead on February 4, 2008 at 7:59 PM
As a guy supporting McCain, and one who does not trust Romney as far as I could throw him, I don’t like that ad. Are you sure that’s real?
John McCain is a true Reagan-legacy Republican (not on ALL issues, I understand that…but for the most part) and yes, Mitt Romney has uttered those infamous “I’m not trying to return to Reagan/Bush…” words, but McCain is way ahead…no reason at all for him to be using any form of attack ad right now.
JetBoy on February 4, 2008 at 8:00 PM
It’s too bad Romney CAN’T just buy the election; campaigning is not one of his strengths.
sulla on February 4, 2008 at 8:00 PM
But, even as a non-McCain-hater, I gotta say that ad was pretty dumb.

I guess if you can’t connect with your base on any issue other than Iraq, you have to go somewhere…
ErikTheRed on February 4, 2008 at 8:06 PM
Oh my God! 14 years ago he said he didn’t want to return to Reagan. Just when I thought positions on taxes, judges, ANWR, the economy, immigration, etc. were important, I’m reminded of what’s truly important: How someone felt about Reagan 14 years ago.
IRRC, 14 years before he ran for President, Reagan was a Democrat.

Slublog on February 4, 2008 at 8:09 PM
If the only option is McCain, HELL YES! I know you are one of those Rudy people who are demanding we shut up and support your new candidate but it isn’t going to happen. If Juan McCain gets the nomination, I’m seriously on the fence about voting in November and I’ve never missed voting in Presidential elections since I was eligible during the Reagan years. Nevertheless, I simply can not bring myself to vote for a weasel who is pro-life, pro-amnesty, pro-gay marriage, anti-free speech and otherwise betrays virtually everything that I hold as an important value. Throw in the fact that he’ll tell you how much water he carried for GWB without mentioning the fact that he was the one put all the holes in the bucket he was carrying.
If the level of vitriol by McCain is any indication, he is clearly unfit for high office (including Senate come to that but that’s Arizona’s problem). McCain constantly lies about the facts. Today, I’ve been called un-American. I’ve been called a psuedo-Republican. I’ve even had my motives questioned just because I won’t shut up and support McCain!
What does it say for McCain’s supporters that they can’t debate the issues but quick to slander those who won’t shut up and get on the Tijuana? That’s a legitimate question. Why is it that my vote, my values, my views are supposed to be silenced so that you all can sneak a dirty liberal Democrat into the GOP nomination? If anything, speaking out against the McCain propoganda is the right thing to do!
P.S. Notice how I could voice my opinion without questioning your motives or patriotism? Why is it that you people can’t do the same thing?

Let’s see you guys run a campaign in Massachusetts that nearly unseats Kennedy without distancing yourself a bit from Reagan. If there was footage of Romney burning churches, it would be understandable in that specific case.
Come to think if it, if he’d done that, we might be having a different conversation.

People like you really disgust me. 24 years serving on active duty in the military and my patriotism has never been questioned until today by you rabid morons that are demanding I shut up and support McCain!
I didn’t serve my nation all these years to “shut up” for the likes of people like you! Narrow-minded hate-filled leftists who belong in the Democrat party and are seeking to destroy the GOP by your propoganda, character assassination, and outright lies!

Anybody else hear the story ’bout how he might’ve been holed up in Hanoi with two hookers, not in “solitary confinement,” and that the CIA has all the docs to prove it?
Seems a little Da Vinci Code to me (though I still think McCain’s a charlatan), but who knows?
P.S. McCain didn’t “crash” his plane for his country any more than he nearly legislated amnesty for his country. McCain made a mistake and was shot down, as I understand it. He served his country, but he didn’t “crash his plane” for it.

F.U. Charka (Sorry, AP, but it needs to be said.)
Everybody knows your issue with Romney, you biased, hateful, spiteful person. Every time you type an ugly letter on your spit-stained keyboard, you just make it a little more obvious.

It’s ALL red meat, Vizzini. Allah tosses a few bloody steaks for the Romney folks and then reaches into another cooler chest and fetches a few bloody steaks for the McCain folks.
And, like the trained circus animals most of you have become, you respond with the predictable screeching, clawing and biting.
Meanwhile, the site meter clatters with the frequency of your page hits. The advertisers grunt and chortle with satisfaction – even though it is unlikely that more than a tiny fraction of you have ever bothered to click on the advertisers’ banners.
No matter. They are happy with the exposure and Allah is happy with the checks he receives. You see, it doesn’t matter if McCain or Hillary or Satan himself gets elected. This site will still rock and roll with tales told by idiots – full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Welcome to the Vast Right-Wing Echo Chamber, my friends. Do we not know and understand the issues vital to the future of our beloved republic? Yes, we do! Unlike the vast, unwashed, ignorant, stupid, apathetic masses who comprise the overwhelming percentage of today’s electorate, we few, we happy few, we band of internet brothers (and sisters, I suppose) are on the cutting edge of politics today.
We are also in the minority – and a tiny minority at that – and, if some of the posts I’ve seen here in the past month are any indication, even our own ranks bear the brunt of a mentally deficient burden.
Time for more chum, Allah.

When you live in a one party state all elections are decided in the primary. If you don’t register to vote as a member of the dominant party you don’t have any say over who gets elected.
This was true in the deep south up to 1980 and it is true in Mass. today.

Barring Divine intervention tomorrow, McCain will be nominated. Hillary will be nominated (you don’t seriously think the Democrat kingmakers will allow a NEGRO to be nominated, do you?).
McCain will run against Hillary.
McCain will be defeated.
The prospect of Hillary’s presidency calls to mind the words uttered by Ellen Ripley’s clone in the final chapter of the Alien motion picture trilogy:
Ripley: Does it grow?
Dr. Gediman: Yeah. Very rapidly.
Ripley: It’s a queen.
Dr. Gediman: How did you know that?
Ripley: She’ll breed. You’ll die. Everyone in the company will die.

Stephen M on February 4, 2008 at 8:48 PM
I guess I should have been more specific. I don’t think anybody has questioned McCain’s actions as a POW (at least I hope they haven’t). I personally have a problem with the way McCain suggests that he commanded the largest air squadron in the Navy without ever bothering to mention being the son of CINCPAC probably had as much to do with that assignment as anything else- relatively minor spin until the comments about “crashing cars in France” rhetoric starts up. Military service isn’t proof positive of being able to lead the nation and lack of military service isn’t an indicator that one can’t be Commander-in-Chief.

Full disclosure: I voted for Jimmy Carter and Ross Perot. I still won’t vote for McCain. As much as I would still love to write in Fred tomorrow I am going to cast my vote for Romney. Above everything else he seems to be the only candidate left who is grounded in reality and not using some sort of protected class status to hide behind, i.e. veteran, religion, woman, black. He has made it this far mostly using his own money and facing unwarranted attacks mostly of a personal nature.
Just A Grunt on February 4, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Hmm.. im torn.
I like romney. That’s why im voting for him in massachusetts, wehre hes ahead by like 30 points or so. He’ll win no matter what ill do, so ill vote for the conservative, naturally.
But look at the general election national polls. Romney is a good 20-25 points behind both hillary and obama, which means its going to be a very short, very bloody end for the republican party for the next 8 years.
I’ll take romney over mccain but romney isn’t viable nationally, which means mccain is the only realistic choice for a republican presence in washington.
I’m basically begging the rest of the party to think 5 steps ahead.

Edgy would be, “One wonders which is more abysmal: McCain’s horrific prisoner-of-war experiences, or his piloting skills.” But even that isn’t that funny.

MB4 on February 4, 2008 at 9:02 PM
You assume McCain is a Republican, which is a fallacy. To be a Republican takes a certain something (we used to call it “principles”) that McCain seems to lack. The issue isn’t whether he’s viable as a candidate (he isn’t; all our “independents” will, come November, find their “Democrat” hats). The issue is, “Will a liberal Republican, who has some [admittedly false] seniority in Congress, cause less damage than a Senator who stands entirely against conservative principles (and has a “D” next to their name?).
As Coulter said, we can fight democrats in the White House. Gingrich came up during Clinton’s presidency. We’ve done it before; we’re good at it. But we’re not good at fighting our own, and if McCain unleashes his spluttering, self-appraising liberalism onto our Congress (and nation), the GOP (and the nation) is done for.
McCain supporters who believe they’re ensuring the safety of the nation really need to come back to the other side of the wardrobe.

I am not buying the line about McCain is the only person who can beat the Dems. Liberlas want McCain to be the candidate. As soon as primary season is over they will turn on him quicker then Cujo on a kitten and with much more venom. I believe strongly that the media and a lot of his supporters today are just waiting to pull out the rug and ensure a Republican defeat. Romney they can’t handle as easy but McCain has a lot of stuff they can use from his years in the senate and simply running on a platform of voting for him because he can beat a Dem is about as logical as voting for a candidate who promises change but nothing substantial policy wise. I am not going to write Romney off because somebody else is saying he won’t win. They said that about the Giants too!
They want change somebody mail them a piggy bank.
Just A Grunt on February 4, 2008 at 9:08 PM
Good point. Nor has Romney attempted to explain away his changes of positions by flat-out denial. McCain stll maintains that he wasn’t looking for amnesty when he’s on the record as calling me a racist for opposing his backroom deal with Teddy Kennedy. McCain also claims that he voted against tax relief for fiscal reasons when, in 2001, he had an entirely different reason- the rich weren’t punished for being rich. Does McCain and his supporters really think we are that stupid?

Sorry to hear that McCain’s POW years are being questioned that way- probably by those too young to remember Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and too arrogant to understand the context of serving one’s country selflessly. By all accounts, McCain was followed the code of conduct and his service was honorable in all the ways that John Kerry’s was not. I’m sorry to hear that some are “going there” when the problem with McCain is all the ways he has betrayed conservative values while in the Senate. That’s where the real argument lies.
