Unfortunately, a baptist minister has shown his human side. I have always known that church is for hypocrites, since we all are, minister or not.

Religion gives a minister pretty free leeway to construct a theology and pass it off as truth. Being a SB, I have seen the very good side of this, and the very bad.

In politics, issues and how you voted are a little more fixed and difficult to nuance. Huckabee has treated the political audience as a church audience, but too often preachers who have great oratory skills, humor, quick wit, and tell you what you want to hear, bump up against their own record. I guess it was predestined…….

Does somebody seriously think Huckabee is trying to win a race here?

I’m not sure of the exact trigger point, but I would say reformed theology began its comeback in Baptist circles in the 70′s and has really gained steam of late. Twenty years ago I knew zero Calvinists, Baptist or otherwise. Today I know dozens thanks in part to men like John Piper, Al Mohler, R.C. Sproul, and John MacArthur. I will not be surprised to see the Southern Baptist Convention split over Calvinism. I have read at least 30% of new Baptist seminary graduates are Calvinists, which almost certainly foreshadows a fight.

I admire James White a lot. He is seemingly willing to debate anyone anytime. He’s done a lot to get Baptists to go back to their reformed roots.

Better get home, the popcorn squirrel is just about done.

Huck preached what I would deem traditional Southern Baptist sermons. They were not particularly deep, but within the bounds of conservative orthodoxy. At the time I attended a SB church with an outstanding pastor of tremendous intellect whose sermons were deeply theological. Whenever Huck visited he seemed to mimick the style and substance he knew we were accustomed to.

Much to the chagrin of some family and friends, I have become reformed, so I’ve moved away from the Southern Baptist Church (although there is a rising surge of reformed theology with the SBC) and have not heard him preach the past few years. However, I’m led to believe Huck has thrown-in with Rick Warren and the church growth guys, so he may well preach “Best Life” nonsense.

He called God “sir” in the fake conversation. Grrr….!

I would be inclined to vote for him because he is an engaging person with tremendous speaking ability. Alas, I find him neither honest nor conservative.

Bryan talked of his liberal Christianity about a month ago. And the thing that bothers me the most is a fake conversation he had with God on his cell phone in front of a room full of people. It’s on youtube.

He called God “sir” in the fake conversation. Grrr….!

Absolutely. There are plenty of reasons not to vote for him, but the relationship with Copeland is reason enough to stay away from Huckabee. By the way, I met Huck and his wife in the 90′s and I’ve heard him preach multiple times. If I believed him to be an honest conservative, I would be inclined to vote for him because he is an engaging person with tremendous speaking ability. Alas, I find him neither honest nor conservative.

Interestingly enough, I probably know several thousand Southern Baptists (if you pick up a rock in the South and throw it you are bound to hit a Southern Baptist) and I have yet to find even one who admits supporting Huckabee. The overwhelming majority of those I know supported Fred. A few support McCain.

We were discussing evangelicals and eschatology, theology of the end times. Many non-Christians concerned with politics probably have no idea the extent to which eschatology impacts political beliefs. At the least eschatology is a good indicator of beliefs.

but then I read about his ongoing relationship with Kenneth Copeland and I am left to wonder.

Thanks for the link. It’s articles like this one that bother me the most about the guy. He makes me very uncomfortable.

It seems to me that, on the Republican side of the isle, politicians who actively promote their “faith” also tend to be the most dishonest.

I believe you are wrong, but I agree we’ve had many who traded on faith for political gain. However, you must remember that not everyone who claims Christ is a Christian. I point you to the words of Christ in Matthew 7:21-23 says: Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

In that passage Christ was speaking of false prophets, men who work in His name, but never knew Him. We can’t know for certain what’s in the hearts of those politicians you refer to, only God knows that. All we can do is compare their rhetoric with their actions to see if they lineup. Sadly, all too often they don’t. About Huckabee specifically, I want to believe he is sincere (even if he is sincerely wrong about many things), but then I read about his ongoing relationship with Kenneth Copeland and I am left to wonder.

The various eschatological views were mentioned along the way as well as our feelings about comments made about evangelicals. I also commented about why some Christians are such jerks.
