Audio: Mike Huckabee’s Twilight Zone

posted at 9:30 pm on February 4, 2008 by Bryan

Gov. Mike Huckabee today accused Mitt Romney of “voter suppression,” which when peeled back amounts to Romney asking people to vote for him instead either John McCain or Huckabee.

Over the weekend, Huckabee accused Sean Hannity of endorsing Romney because Bain owns Clear Channel.

Laura Ingraham wonders: Is there something in the water in Arkansas?

According to Rush, Baine doesn’t own Clear Channel yet. And Sean isn’t a contractual partner of Clear Channel, but rather ABC radio and another company.

This guy, how does he hold on. I’ll bet McCain is bankrolling his campaign at this point. Huckabee is broke he simply does not have the money to continue.

If it is too tight to call will Fred give his old buddy his delegates? I would feel so betrayed.

If it weren’t for Huckabee, we wouldn’t be shuddering over a McCain nomination. The votes he siphons off Romney could easily put Mitt over the top and give us a viable candidate against the Democrats. After the next Presidential election, I’m sure we’ll see all of this more clearly. Unfortunately, it will be too late.

Some conspiracy. Wait until McCain wins SC and Florida first, then endorse Mitt at the very last minute.

I suppose if you’re Huckabee you figure that the check from Bain got lost in the mail and Sean wouldn’t endorse Mitt without it.

Speaking of conspiracies… I seem to remember some idiots calling Fred Thompson a “dark horse candidate” – shortly before he gracefully bowed out of the running.

Now Huckabee is going after Romney tooth-and-nail while McCain is in first place. Does somebody seriously think Huckabee is trying to win a race here?

What else would one expect from a pre-millenialist?

davidk on February 4, 2008 at 9:35 PM

I don’t know what his eschatological views have to do with anything. But were you referring to Hal Lindsey, Tim LaHaye style Dispensational Premillenialism, a view responsible for recent end-times mania? Or were you referring to Historic Premillenialism, a view held by early church fathers such as Ireneaus, Justin Martyr, Papias, Tertullian, and Origen among others? It is premillenialism of the dispensational variety which espouses a pretribulational rapture of the church, an idea I find no scriptural basis for.

I lean toward Amillenialism, but I’ve studied all of these views extensively and find some credence in the Historic Premillenialism view. It certainly isn’t in tinfoil hat territory and should not be demeaned.

flyfisher on February 4, 2008 at 9:56 PM

I was refering to premillenialists’ tendency to see everything as a conspiracy and/or twisting current events to fit their paranoia.

I’m leaning toward the newer preteistism.

davidk on February 4, 2008 at 10:06 PM

You didn’t answer my question: are you referring to Dispensation Premillenialism or Historical Premillenialism? There is a mammoth difference. I would agree that many Pre-trib folks see conspiracies everywhere. I bet some have bought bomb shelters just in case the mid-trib view is correct. For fun, go to raptureready.com and read their Rapture Index, which grades the imminence of the pretrib rapture.

An argument can be made for Partial, or Classical, Preterism.

flyfisher on February 4, 2008 at 10:17 PM

[Fred Thompson]’s running for Veep.
Buy Danish on February 4, 2008 at 9:50 PM

A surprisingly well thought-out theory there. Except for the fact that Fred Thompson, of course, isn’t running for ANYTHING. He’s doing about as much to help John McCain’s campaign as Lorne Greene is.

But still the psycho theories abound: Fred Thompson is secretly planning to leverage his, what, three? electoral points into McCain’s campaign. Um… OK…
sure, I suppose anything’s possible – no matter how incredibly stupid it sounds.

But meanwhile Mike Huckabee (whose odds of winning at this point are somewhere between those of Fred Thompson and Lorne Greene) is still spending himself into the poorhouse and desperately trying to steal votes from the number two candidate.

Oh, but so what? Huckabee has no idea what he’s doing. I mean, he couldn’t POSSIBLY have an ulterior motive, could he? Nooo; of course not. He’s just a little goofy, that’s all!

logis on February 4, 2008 at 10:21 PM

I am refering to those premillenialists who find conspiracies …… .

If midtribbers could see that the first 3 1/2 yrs were times of peace thay would be cool with it.

I guess one would call the preterism toward which I lean partial. But I don’t like the term partial. Classical is heretical–even if one can make an argument for it.

I like to call myself panmillenialist–it will all pan out, but some think that it is just a copout.

My parents were married on May 15, 1948; my older brother turns 60 this year. If the millenialists are right, something’s gotta give pretty soon.

Ok, I truly don’t mean this to be offensive to the Christians here, but I’m looking for confirmation of my perception.

It seems to me that, on the Republican side of the isle, politicians who actively promote their “faith” also tend to be the most dishonest. Maybe I’m prejudiced by the current race, in which Huckabee has show that he has absolutely no shame and is willing to bend the truth beyond all recognition, and my disgust for his stupid “Jesus man” pandering has skewed my objectivity. I hope so.

peski on February 4, 2008 at 10:50 PM

One is never offensive when an honest question is asked.

It is a very complex question you have. It involves a misunderstanding of true Chrisianity and the human condition, the answer to which is beyond this forum.

People for millenia have done atrocious things while claiming the Name of Christ and in the Name of Christ.

We must look to Jesus Christ for the answer on how to live. I know that may sound trite, but if we look at man, even the most consistent of followers of Jesus, we will be bewildered.

davidk on February 4, 2008 at 11:09 PM

That is the #1 reason I won’t vote for Huck Finn….he lays out these dishonest sneak attacks Clintonian style against Romney and does it in such a way so as not to seem like he’s making the connection.

Livefreeordie on February 4, 2008 at 11:10 PM

If I may add, those who are open about their Christianity are, due to the animosity toward Jesus Christ, under a microscope. When they fall short, much is made about it.

But the Christian who can, by God’s grace, remain consistent in his or her walk gets little notice.

peski on February 4, 2008 at 10:50 PM

I believe you are wrong, but I agree we’ve had many who traded on faith for political gain. However, you must remember that not everyone who claims Christ is a Christian. I point you to the words of Christ in Matthew 7:21-23 says: Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

In that passage Christ was speaking of false prophets, men who work in His name, but never knew Him. We can’t know for certain what’s in the hearts of those politicians you refer to, only God knows that. All we can do is compare their rhetoric with their actions to see if they lineup. Sadly, all too often they don’t. About Huckabee specifically, I want to believe he is sincere (even if he is sincerely wrong about many things), but then I read about his ongoing relationship with Kenneth Copeland and I am left to wonder.

We were discussing evangelicals and eschatology, theology of the end times. Many non-Christians concerned with politics probably have no idea the extent to which eschatology impacts political beliefs. At the least eschatology is a good indicator of beliefs.

flyfisher on February 4, 2008 at 11:57 PM

Skidd on February 4, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Absolutely. There are plenty of reasons not to vote for him, but the relationship with Copeland is reason enough to stay away from Huckabee. By the way, I met Huck and his wife in the 90’s and I’ve heard him preach multiple times. If I believed him to be an honest conservative, I would be inclined to vote for him because he is an engaging person with tremendous speaking ability. Alas, I find him neither honest nor conservative.

Interestingly enough, I probably know several thousand Southern Baptists (if you pick up a rock in the South and throw it you are bound to hit a Southern Baptist) and I have yet to find even one who admits supporting Huckabee. The overwhelming majority of those I know supported Fred. A few support McCain.

How does he preach? The “Best life now” stuff?

Skidd on February 5, 2008 at 12:17 AM

Huck preached what I would deem traditional Southern Baptist sermons. They were not particularly deep, but within the bounds of conservative orthodoxy. At the time I attended a SB church with an outstanding pastor of tremendous intellect whose sermons were deeply theological. Whenever Huck visited he seemed to mimick the style and substance he knew we were accustomed to.

Much to the chagrin of some family and friends, I have become reformed, so I’ve moved away from the Southern Baptist Church (although there is a rising surge of reformed theology with the SBC) and have not heard him preach the past few years. However, I’m led to believe Huck has thrown-in with Rick Warren and the church growth guys, so he may well preach “Best Life” nonsense.

I’m not sure of the exact trigger point, but I would say reformed theology began its comeback in Baptist circles in the 70’s and has really gained steam of late. Twenty years ago I knew zero Calvinists, Baptist or otherwise. Today I know dozens thanks in part to men like John Piper, Al Mohler, R.C. Sproul, and John MacArthur. I will not be surprised to see the Southern Baptist Convention split over Calvinism. I have read at least 30% of new Baptist seminary graduates are Calvinists, which almost certainly foreshadows a fight.

I admire James White a lot. He is seemingly willing to debate anyone anytime. He’s done a lot to get Baptists to go back to their reformed roots.
