Super Bowl XLII open thread: The Giants shock the world; video added

posted at 5:00 pm on February 3, 2008 by Bryan

19-0 or 18-1? Will Manning the Lesser avenge his brother? Will the Patriots complete the first perfect season in a generation? Will any of the commercials live up to the hype? Could I ask any more annoying questions?

Yeah, but I’ll stop. Have fun, enjoy the game, etc etc.

Update (AP): If you’re looking for the ads, they should be available on YouTube either during or immediately after the game. Keep your eye on YT’s front page and their AdBlitz channel.

In the meantime, something to help you prepare mentally for the game.

Update: The end zone pass to Burress goes down as the game winner, but this is the play that saved the game and may make the Eli Manning legend. It was 3rd and 5, 1:15 to go and the Giants down by 4 on their own 43. The Patriot D blitzes and catches Manning in the backfield, but he slips out of the Patriots’ grip to haul a shot down the field to David Tyree. Tyree makes a miracle catch, the Giants get the first down and go on to win.

Cmon, Lil Manning.

Go Cowboys! Oh. Never mind. *sigh*

mimi1220 on February 3, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Don’t worry Giants fans, I am sure you will almost beat us again, just like last time.

BKennedy on February 3, 2008 at 5:06 PM

The New York Post has been particularly obnoxious this week with the chest thumping and Pats bashing. I hope that NE not only wins but wins big.

Hilts on February 3, 2008 at 5:08 PM

Dude. A full-automatic shotgun. That’s crazy…bye bye bad guy.

Spirit of 1776 on February 3, 2008 at 5:09 PM

Hillary is endorsing the NY Giants (a quality that I admire about her).

But as a former New England resident, all I have to say is GO PATRIOTS!!!! (and GO MITT!!!).

Sorry….it is a political blog after all. ;-)

Darnell Clayton on February 3, 2008 at 5:10 PM

Are the Giants using those shotguns today? ‘Cuz that could seriously impact the point spread.

theGimp on February 3, 2008 at 5:14 PM

That video really needs an AWESOME warning.

lorien1973 on February 3, 2008 at 5:14 PM

Ho hum, Boston beats New York…again.

Greenhorn on February 3, 2008 at 5:17 PM

Watch the refs making favorable calls for Pats. NFL doing everything to make history today. Just like the debacle of the Superbowl between Seattle and Pittsburgh. Rigged for the Squeelers.

Will Manning the Lesser avenge his brother

To Peyton’s eternal credit, he got his own revenge last year in the AFC Championship game coming from behind to win and go on to the Super Bowl.

TheBigOldDog on February 3, 2008 at 5:30 PM

I’m not even going to watch. No sense in it when you want both teams to lose. Besides, no matter what the outcome, it’s going to be all about the Patriots. If they win, all we’ll hear about is how they’re a team of destiny. If the Giants win, all we’ll hear about is how the Patriots came up short. I haven’t even watched ESPN since the conference championships I’m so tired of hearing about them.

Did y’all forget? Tom Brady=watch Algore’s movie. Eli Manning=inspirational war hero on the sidelines. Come on! Go Giants! (Hey, this is a political blog! It’s all about the politics!)

TX Mom on February 3, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Barack Obama is going to have a unique post Super Bowl experience tomorrow. He kicks off on Monday with a morning rally in East Rutherford, NJ (at a venue next to Giants Stadium), then ends the day with an http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/boston?source=homepage_events in Boston. He will be speaking to football fans on the opposite end of the political spectrum.

Barack release this statement on the SuperBowl earlier today.

“A reminder – seven years ago, a patriotic group of Americans had to make a choice between conventional experience and change they desperately needed. It wasn’t an easy decision. Both options were compelling in their own right, but when it was time to make a decision, the choice was clear. The New England Patriots started Tom Brady over Drew Bledsoe, and Brady went on to be the MVP of Super Bowl XXXVI. Now that’s change we can believe in.”

TheBigOldDog on February 3, 2008 at 5:36 PM

Only for about the last 40 years or so. Just because I don’t give a damn about one game I’m not a fan?

Ya, after all, it’s just the Super Bowl and either way it turns out, it’s historic. Who needs to see Football history when you’ve been following it for 40 years right?

TheBigOldDog on February 3, 2008 at 5:43 PM

Having called the Giants by four over Dallas and by three over Green Bay (yes, really), I give you tonight’s exact final score.

That frag-12 round is about what the Giants are going to need.

Pats 62, Giants 13 (and since we’re out of my month of discontent, take that to your Man)

steveegg on February 3, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Dude!

JammieWearingFool on February 3, 2008 at 5:43 PM

Giants 25- Patriots- 13, Tancredo- for POTUS.

GIANTS- Two regular field goals, and three touchdowns, with only a single one-point kick completed after TD’s.

PATS- Two touchdowns, and one TD kick completed.

History is not made.

Tancredo sweeps Super Tuesday as surprise write-in protest candidate.

History is made.

More Sierra Nevada Celebration ale!!!

I will vouch for that, as well as JWF’s 9-1 playoff record. Of course, I won’t mention his well-under-.500 regular season record (oops).

BKennedy on February 3, 2008 at 6:07 PM

Shula’s always been such an honorable man. Signing a contract with Miami when he was still under contract with Baltimore. Cost the Dolphins a first round pick. Good man.

The best part about a Patriots win will be the rendering of the ’72 Dolphins into irrelevancy.

SnarkVader on February 3, 2008 at 6:09 PM

why haven’t the Pats mentioned their cameraman during the “teamwork” piece?

mikeyboss on February 3, 2008 at 6:13 PM

myamphibian on February 3, 2008 at 6:14 PM

why haven’t the Pats mentioned their cameraman during the “teamwork” piece?

mikeyboss on February 3, 2008 at 6:13 PM

Why haven’t the other teams in the NFL stepped their game up instead of whining about a camera incident that offered no competitive advantage at the beginning of a season.

Oh, because it would be too hard to admit they got beat fair and square.

Well, I guess it isn’t the teams as much as their incessant fans.

Texyank on February 3, 2008 at 6:22 PM

As a die-hard Giants fan let me say right now, for the record, before the game starts,

that our season was MADE when we beat the Cowboys and put them out of the Playoffs.

Making the Supe is mere GRAVY and no matter what happens today, short of a 73-0 shellacking, our season has been a rousing SUCCESS. No one, but no one, expected us to get this far.

So GO G-MEN, have a great game and give it your all.

Coz with the Cowpokes home watching on TV that’s all we Giants fans could ever want !!!!

Always Right on February 3, 2008 at 6:22 PM

Here you go people: 31-27 Patriots. Even though the Steelers really are the best team.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 3, 2008 at 6:23 PM

She did okay on the anthem. Couldn’t quite hit the high note, though. Did see her wipe her eyes afterwards.

mpbk on February 3, 2008 at 6:23 PM

I dislike both the Pats and the Giants, so let me say this as objectively as possible.

The Giants suck, they’ve sucked all year, and they still suck.

And–to link this back to normal Hot Air fair–the Giants are more a media-hype creation than McCain, and that is saying a lot.

Nessuno on February 3, 2008 at 6:24 PM

Kid? Bwahaha! presumptuous of you. yes I too saw the 72 Dolphins.

I was just curious how a person who claims to be a fan of the game could intentionally miss a historic game.

TheBigOldDog on February 3, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Figured you did. No offense, but I had to find out for sure. :)

But how does not caring about a game with two teams I have no love for make me not a fan of the game? Wouldn’t get to watch the whole thing anyway, as I work 3rd shift and will be leaving about halftime. Now if the Cowboys had been there, I’d have taken a vacation day and watched. But historical significance or not, I’m not wasting a vacation day on a game I don’t care about. I’ll save it for when my son comes home on leave and I can spend it with him. That to me is what’s really important.

Kowboy on February 3, 2008 at 6:25 PM

that our season was MADE when we beat the Cowboys and put them out of the Playoffs.

That is exactly how us Bucs fan felt in 2002. After we beat the Eagles, who cared what happened in the superbowl. The eagles win -was- our superbowl. The superbowl was a let down, even though we won.
