Berkeley mayor to Marines: End the occupation of our city; Marines to Berkeley mayor: Get bent

posted at 3:13 pm on February 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

Having stayed the course in Ramadi and Fallujah, the Corps digs in for its next great challenge: Moldering hippies in search of the most righteous photo-op evah.

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates offered Friday to help the U.S. Marines leave town by negotiating an end to the lease for their recruiting station, even as he backpedaled on a City Council resolution declaring the Corps “uninvited and unwelcome intruders” in the city.

In the face of an onslaught of pro-military criticism from around the country, Bates, a retired Army captain, also issued a statement that said the City Council’s resolution Tuesday night “did not adequately differentiate our respect and support for those serving in the armed forces and our opposition to the Iraq war policy.” He said he would ask the council to modify the resolution at its next meeting, scheduled for Feb. 12.

A Marines spokeswoman said Friday that the Corps has no intention of abandoning its space at 64 Shattuck Square that has been the subject of protests for months.

MM has the obligatory pics of morons in Gitmo garb taking their meaningless gestures very seriously indeed. As irritating as this crap is, is there any more efficient way (outside of the “Betray Us” ad) for an anti-war group to discredit its side? No wonder even Colbert’s writers have taken to mocking them. Too bad Super Tuesday’s coming up; this would have been primo material for O’Reilly and H&C this week.

Click the image and scroll down to the video to feel the spirit of the 60s. Can you feel it?

On a side note, explain to me why any adult would fund their child’s education in the California system. Yes, most school systems are waaaaaaay out to the left, but why add injury to injury to injury by sending your kid someplace where apparently every government organization (educational or civic) is dominated by crazed socialists???

doufree on February 2, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Message to Bezerkley and most of California: PLEASE LEAVE THE UNITED STATES. YOU’RE NOT WELCOME HERE.

NickTx on February 2, 2008 at 3:20 PM

‘Cut off Federal funds’, says DeMint. Very good idea. Too bad that more can’t be cut off.

countywolf on February 2, 2008 at 3:20 PM

What Berzerkly is doing is practicing a form of discrimination. It is the worst kind of discrimination.

It’s the most vile and heinous discrimination against those who choose to serve their country. Those who choose to defend their rights to act like the fools they are. Those who would give the ultimate sacrifice to protect those who would malign the good men and women who choose to serve our country.

Take any federal and state funding away from Berkley. All of it. Military, law enforcement, streets and highways, the university — all of it. Every cent.

Kini on February 2, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Lotta gray hair. I suppose that means we won’t be treated to public displays of carnal free love to support jihad. Probably all for the best.

Just a second. Bates is a retired Army captain, you say? Obviously he’s a biiiiiig patriot. Maybe he could be SecDef in the Maverick Administration.

JiangxiDad on February 2, 2008 at 3:25 PM

Ha. The Marines don’t like you either, hippie.

Funny thing is, they hate the Military because of the Iraq War, yet the people of Iraq LOVE our Troops. How ironic.

As Clint Eastwood said: “Shut your face, hippie.”

All these people are the leftovers of the communes that disappeared in the late 60’s because everyone lost interest and no one was listening. They wouldn’t have an audience for their protests if it weren’t for youtube and the morons at the local TV stations who don’t know journalism for the butt. These people are the best advertising that sane americans can have for how corrupt and communist our colleges are today.

Medea says she’s the one who defends our freedon. Maybe she’s never read a history book or a newspaper. Shows that liberal efforts to destroy education in America is beginning to pay off for them.

snaggletoothie on February 2, 2008 at 3:30 PM

After emailing every member of the city council, including the mayor and auditor, the only reply I received was from Kriss Worthington, who was one of the members to vote No on the resolution condemning the MRC as “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.”

You stay class, Berkeley.

fourstringfuror on February 2, 2008 at 3:33 PM

Sure, we can simply “end the war” by pulling our troops out of Iraq.

Once we do that, al-Qaeda, the Iranians and Syrians as well as the former Baathists will all put their guns down, join hands, sing “Kumbaya” and then go home and live happily ever after.

This is a classic example of the thinking on the left that there isnt’ a problem in the world that can’t be solved simply by not having the US involved.

Because, after all, for progressives, what is the biggest threat and danger to the world?

SteveMG on February 2, 2008 at 3:34 PM

Best solution – close all military offices in Berkley. While you’re at it, close every other federal office in Berkley – permanently. Bush could do this tomorrow. You can get around to cutting off all of the other federal funds, but see how long the last without welfare and social security offices….

On a side note, explain to me why any adult would fund their child’s education in the California system.

To get a first-rate education, that’s why.

Cal is not the city of Berkeley. There is no connection other than the university happens to be in Berkeley, which wasn’t even a town when the University located itself there. Cal has more than its fair share of lefties, but these goings on aren’t connected to the University except perhaps tangentially. Let’s not tar everyone with the same broad brush, please!

Bob's Kid on February 2, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Don’t want to listen to that cr@ppy video more than one, but did I catch that “singer” saying that they wouldn’t mind if the military were gone and they lost their freedom?

If I heard it right, then I am dumbfounded. It does remind me of the 60’s when we were spit on by civilians.

All I can say to any active duty Marine out there is Oooh-Rah and Semper Fi guys, sorry you’re going through the same cr@p I did.

Duncan Khuver on February 2, 2008 at 3:40 PM

this is just the beginning of what we would see in a Hillary or Obama presidency.

Only they’d be demanding we leave Afghanistan since President Obama or Hillary had abandoned Iraq a year earlier.

But, boy, with Clinton or Obama in the White House, we’d sure teach those Republicans a lesson.

SteveMG on February 2, 2008 at 3:42 PM

Steve – “end the war” by pulling our troops out of Iraq.
Once we do that, al-Qaeda, the Iranians and Syrians as well as the former Baathists will all put their guns down, join hands, sing “Kumbaya”

Yup, just like when we left Vietnam after our victory there. The N.V.s and the S.V.s would kiss and make up. But then two years later, that damned Reality Monster reared its ugly head, N.V. (envy) invaded S.V. and took over. But hey, the war ended and now they live in “Peace”. Dumbazz hippies, “living” under communism isn’t “peace” at all, nor is it living, it’s merely surviving. We should have had Troops manning the DMZ like in Korea, and today, S.V. would be a free nation, probably sending troops to help out in Iraq. Let’s not make the same mistake in *this* war. ‘Win and leave’. It doesn’t work.

Tony737 on February 2, 2008 at 3:45 PM

I like that idea a lot. Berkeley residents could go to Richmond or Oakland to do their federal business…or even all the way across the bay to San Francisco!

The more I think about that the more I like it!

After graduation, Bates served in Germany as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves and later worked in real estate.

Sounds like from that anyway that he was not a retired Army Captain, just that he had been an Army Captain and with oh so tough duty in Germany.

Maybe he was retired from the Reserves and only made Captain, that could be, hard to piece it together from what little info I find when I “google”. If he was in the Army Reserve, then big #ucken deal. Back then, unlike now, the Army Reserves were pretty much considered by the Regular Army to be worth not much more than a warm bucket of spit.

I’m thinking that the Marine recruiting station needs a set of humongous speakers so they can blast out patriotic music daily between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for the benefit of the Pinkos, and so nobody can hear their wailing and gnashing.

The latest from the Bezerkelers is that they DO support the troops, they just think the war is horribly wrong and want the Marines out of their fair (?) city. As of today the various contact e-mails for the city are unavailable for those of us to use who think they’re wrong.

Ann Coulter asked for comment had this to say.

“We should invade their land, kill their leaders, and convert them from the socialist mecca on the west coast to a democratic republic.”

Here are some interesting tidbits from that last city council meeting.

10. Changing the Unites States Drug Policy

From: Peace and Justice Commission

Recommendation:

1. Recognize the leadership of Congresswoman Barbara Lee in advocating for reduced military spending by the federal government;

2. Declare that United States drug policy should be re-oriented toward programs for demand reduction in the United States and to support the rights of people with the diseases of alcoholism and drug dependency to receive effective treatment;

3. Urge Representative Lee to step up her leadership to terminate all military assistance to the Colombian Army, and to re-direct these funds to the United States Department of Health and Human Services for substance abuse prevention, harm reduction, and treatment programs;

4. Call for a policy toward Colombia that at its forefront promotes respect for human rights and the rule of law, by conditioning economic aid to the Colombian government on effective action to end impunity for human rights violations and collaboration with paramilitary groups;

5. Oppose proposals to expand into Mexico and Afghanistan the failed strategies of aerial fumigation and militaristic approaches to drug trafficking.

Financial Implications: None

11. Firestone Natural Rubber Company Workers in Liberia

From: Peace and Justice Commission

Recommendation: Join the International Labor Rights Forum, Friends of the Earth, NAACP, TransAfrica Forum, The RFK Memorial Center for Human Rights, and other United States and Liberian based organizations in demanding that the Bridgestone/Firestone Corporation:

1. Take responsibility for the situation in Liberia and follow the law;

2. Assign achievable quotas for the average worker to negate the use of child laborers;

3. Increase wages to raise the standard of living of plantation workers;

4. Supply modern tools to protect workers on the job from coming into contact with harmful chemicals;

5. Redress all environmental damages as a result of its Liberian operations;

6. Stop releasing chemicals into the environment and stop exposing workers to any compounds and chemicals that are internationally recognized as most toxic;

7. Fully disclose all key project payments, contracts, and concession agreements for all Firestone projects in Liberia.

Financial Implications: None

13. Withdrawal of California National Guard Troops from Iraq

From: Peace and Justice Commission

Recommendation: Call upon the Governor of California to demand that the President and Congress take immediate steps to withdraw California National Guard troops from Iraq now, and urge the California State Assembly and Senate to introduce legislation calling upon the prompt return of the California National Guard from Iraq.

Financial Implications: None

14. Enforcement Of Lying In Public Spaces And Implementation Policy

From: Councilmembers Maio and Capitelli

Recommendation: Refer to City Manager the request that staff review and suggest implementation of a policy that would require no (or low) enforcement of (647j) at night if no shelter beds are available, and if available enforcement would involve offering a shelter bed and would include transportation to the bed funded via taxi scrip for those homeless individuals who opt for a bed.

Financial Implications: To be determined

18. Wind Turbines and Bird Deaths

From: Councilmember Olds

Recommendation: Direct the City Manager to write letters to both the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and the Alameda County Planning Department, expressing the Berkeley City Council’s concerns about the number of bird deaths as a result of wind turbines in the Altamont Pass.

Financial Implications: None

19. Condemn Construction of Border Wall – United States and Mexico Border

From: Councilmember Worthington

Recommendation: Condemn the construction of a border wall along the international boundary zone connecting the United States of Mexico and the United States of America.

Financial Implications: None

20. Reaffirmation – U.S. Record of the Armenian Genocide

From: Councilmember Worthington

Recommendation: Adopt a resolution calling upon the House of Representatives to schedule a vote on House Resolution 106, which reaffirms the U.S. record of the Armenian Genocide.

Financial Implications: None

Since when does a local municipality guide United States foreign policy? AND since when does a municipality have a “Peace and Justice Commission”? Talk about wasteful spending. No wonder taxes are so high (along with the majority of the citizens) there.

But let’s review this meeting….

Good: Hippies
Bad: Marines

Good: Barbara Lee
Bad: US Drug Control Policies

Good: International Labor Rights Forum, Friends of the Earth, NAACP, TransAfrica Forum, The RFK Memorial Center for Human Rights
Bad: Firestone

Good: National Guard
Bad: National Guard in Iraq

Good: Bums and city provided rides to shelters for bums
Bad: Cops arresting bums for sleeping in the streets (Rudy should be pissed about this one)

Good: Birds
Bad: Senseless bird deaths from wind turbines (RFK Jr. must be conflicted on this one)

While you don’t buy as much with a dollar your return is generally acceptable.

Signed Army 84-89 Abn Infantry. Loved seeing gay from my old unit, the 82nd, standing over the hippie about to pounce.

Close all federal offices in Berkeley? Hell no. Convert them all into military recruiting offices? Hell yeah. Except for a select few that would be converted to share space with a military recruiting office because I think there would be few things funnier than watching a Code Pinko’s face as they tried to cope with having to enter a military recruiting office in order to pick up their welfare check.

The Marines raised the American Flag at Iwo Jima under enemy gun fire.

They can certainly keep the American Flag flying freely in Berkley over the heads of some smelly hippies.

Just in…
Following excessive dope-smoking session, Berkeley town council votes to change city name from Berkeley to Bull’seye.

Motion to volunteer city as naval long-range gunnery target passes unanimously.

I signed the petition…and I’m waiting for some tin foil hat loon to either call or email me. I hope they do…oh I hope they do!

[From Gateway Pundit] The protesters denied anyone entry into the US Marine Corp offices for 7 1/2 hours!

If I had been there, I would have walked over them. I used to work on a cattle farm. Walking in cow flops don’t bother me a bit.

Hey Berkeley, the Sixties just called!!!

They said they don’t want you back, and also said, “Grow up, and get over it…..that was forty long years ago!!!”

End Berkleys unwelcome occupation of the U.S. NOW!

I am a Viet-Nam era Navy veteran and I am now in a total state of shock here! For pulling a totally jackass over-the-top anti-American/anti-military stunt like this, the Army should request that the Department of Defense erase Bates’ record as an Army captain and the Veterans Administration should revoke his right to call himself a veteran and deny him any status as such! Then they should haul his worthless carcass into court and make him pay back every single penny of his Veteran’s Benefits that he’s used. To say one is an ex-Army captain and then turn against their own brothers-in-arms is completely beyond contempt! How does this moron sleep at night?!!!

Berkeley is one of the most leftist schools in the nation. The birth of student communism…student activism…ask David Horowitz.

How is it that they think there’d be no cost involved in bringing the CA National Troops home from Iraq? Are they gonna walk home?
