Good article. Straight Talk, huh? I wonder if the Huckster will be able to overcome his horror at McCain’s actions on this, and still accept the VP mantle because his soul wouldn’t let him do otherwise.

JerryTBG,
“And just where have you been hiding?”
Thanks, I’m a long-time lurker who snuck in at the last open registration.
“Unfortunately it went right over their heads.”
I’m afraid so. They seem to want to believe the delusion that President McCain will appoint judges that will overturn the legislation that Senator McCain rammed through Congress.
Strange, eh?
ebrown2 on February 2, 2008 at 12:30 AM
Can anyone explain, why opposing tax cuts without offsetting spending cuts, is a bad position?
At the end of the day, don’t we WANT the gov’t to spend less?
As I understand McCain’s position now, he favors making the Bush tax-cuts permanent AND cutting spending.
“[W]hy would anybody be such a fool as to introduce, into the debate about what we should do now, arguments about what we should have done before?”

a capella on February 2, 2008 at 12:34 AM
And so it has come to this? The future of the party first, the future of the nation second? So McCain is not a conservative….maybe he hates conservatism, who knows – I doubt that, but he might ( I tend to think of him more as a bitter and spiteful man who blames certain conservatives for undermining him in the past). And maybe it’s time for the Republican Party to stop being a big tent party, and go back to being the loyal opposition. And maybe it would make all of the ideologically pure “movement” conservatives feel good about themselves to sit on their hands this November, or even to pull the lever for an anti-military leftist Dem.
But if it’s all about “party first”?….no, I’m not drinking that kool-aid.
Priscilla on February 2, 2008 at 12:36 AM
That has already happened. There is no coalition to give the GOP strength. Yes, the tent was too big.
a capella on February 2, 2008 at 12:40 AM
For those who say they are for the country…
what are you for? What principles or beliefs do you stand on? Just saying you are for the “country” and knocking those who refuse to drink the kool-aid of compromise that Bush has been serving up and McCain will drown everyone in does not mean those who vote for McVain are for the country.
While our soldier are overseas fighting for our freedoms, McVain will be eroding those freedoms here with the help of a congress (as someone pointed out earlier…Hillary will get a bigger fight from the congress than McVain will).
It’s about more than a party, yes it is about the country and the country is much more tham the war on terror and our fight in Iraq…a whole lot ,ore (if you haven’t noticed we have been thru many wars…a civil war…and the country is still here). One thing a country can’t survive is compromise, rot and erosion of freedoms on the inside.

To paraphrase the author of the Bible, What does it gain a man to win the world and lose his soul?
What difference does it make to fight terrorists overseas and work to destroy this country from within?
McCain would sign tax increases, amnesty, and even a fairness doctrine.
So, what would we gain?
This country will never be defeated without, only from within.

Yeah, he calls it. Just like the DNC was totally controlled by Clinton people when he was in power, and still is to some extent. That is a big part of the power struggle with the Dems right now. The old school left wing Kennedy-Obama- Daschle types want power back from the centrist triangulation specialist Clintons. It is all about power,..in both parties. Power and money.
a capella on February 2, 2008 at 12:47 AM
Except the fact that he decided to oppose it arguing the same class warfare garbage the Democrats were spewing. Had he opposed them based on lack of fiscal discipline, I would respect his decision. He didn’t, and you know it, which makes your argument utter crap.

If this offends you then good.

No, I think the issue is that America’s founding principles are represented by conservative principles and therefore if neither of the parties represents conservatism then America’s founding principles will no longer be represented by either party.
What people are saying is that America comes before party. It’s the McCain supporters that have been suggesting otherwise.

I agree wholeheartedly. And we will hasten that defeat by electing the proponents of surrender.
And so what if McCain would sign all of those things, if they are never passed? Bush signed McCain-Feingold, Bush would have signed McCain-Kennedy. But it didn’t pass.
We should choose our battles wisely. Fight amnesty. Fight jihad. Elect the most conservative possible candidates. Support the military. But hand the country over to the left, and say it’s because we’re “principled”? That is self-defeating. It’s also really stupid.

When you pick the candidate you think somebody else will like, that means you’re picking the candidate NOBODY will like.
Americans argue a lot, but we all can all agree on one thing: we ALL hate moderates. Every single one of us.
You want to beat a moderate candidate every time? No problem; all you have to do is pick a side – and it doesn’t matter which one.
My opponent is MODERATE on interrogating terrorists and/or foreign interventionism? Well, I’m not!
My opponent is MODERATE on raising taxes and/or feeding the poor? Well I’m not!
My opponent is MODERATE on illegal immigration and/or globalism? Well I’m not!
So-called “moderates” don’t know one thing about compromise that the average six-year-old doesn’t; all they want is for mommy and daddy to stop arguing. And that’s never going to happen.
logis on February 2, 2008 at 1:07 AM
How do you propose we do that? Unless Romney stops McCain, all the candidates are amnesty supporters, and most of the elite of the country, left and right want amnesty. Most of those here illegally will likely vote for the lefties, who will create a permanent Democrat majority, who will vote for surrender and Marxism. Sounds like checkmate to me.

Trusting McCain when he is caught in a lie, and his ego won’t let him relinquish and tell the truth, is not in me. No matter how you spin it, the ends don’t justify the means. Everyone focusing on electability now, is doing one of two things: forgetting that they can take action now, or dissembling so that they can assuage their fears. The primary is the time to flesh this out. Following the established out of fear does not serve any worthy cause.

Well, I am changing my mind every single day concerning whether or not to hold my nose and vote for McCain or sit. I’ve considered and see both sides of this debate as valid. It’s just a matter of long term versus short term goals for the country. I better get my head screwed on straight by November. All I know for certain is that this primary process needs to be rebuilt, when 20 plus states will have virtually no say in who the candidate will be. As a Wisconsinite, I only have the choice to throw money at my chosen primary candidate, or suffer the choice of others.

Why do you think any immigrant is here? How about those who come legally? How about those that support law and don’t game the system? I’m all for charity, but you have to follow law. This shadow business ticks me off. Do they parade across the border in broad daylight? What is done is illegal, and it’s done in “the shadows.” Exposing and addressing helps introduce them to our constitution and rule of law.
Cold Steel on February 2, 2008 at 1:30 AM
Think about it: The ultra-left wing have a deathgrip on the Democrat Party. They’re weeding out all their infidels, like Joe Lieberman.
Meanwhile, what is happening within the Republican Party? Appeasement, pure and simple.
Sure, we’ve been conditioned to call McCain and his Gang of Seven “moderates.” But that’s stupid. That’s just a propaganda term for the FAR LEFT of the Republican caucus. They’ve got the rest of the party in a chokehold. It started with Bush Sr., and it worsened with Bush Jr. But now the left wing of the Republican Party is trying to take it over completely.
…and now we conservatives are supposed to, in our turn, appease THEM? So that they can “meet our enemies halfway” for us?
Well, no. Just, no.
This has to stop somewhere and – guess what? It stops right here. The retards in my TV keep telling me it’s time for “change.” Ironically enough, for the first time in decades, I think they’re actually right about something.

It does, but most McCain supporters are too eFing enamored with him to put up a coherent argument as to why we should ignore his malfeasance and constant knives in the liver to vote for him.
With what has been posted here, at MM and in the conservative media, if his supporters still support him, then they are delusional.
In ALL of the posts, comments, news articles, etc., NOT ONE COMMENTER has EVER explained why the jackass McCain has taken the positions he has, or flip-flopped on the positions he has.
….but he can beat Hillary?
I doubt he could beat the town drunk once the media get ahold of him after the gullible anoint him….with the “independents” help of course.
It’s as of one is dealing with Huckabee supporters who only see his religiosity, or Guiliani who only see how he acted after 911, or McCain and his war record….
…or Ron Paul supporters…
Examine his record, respond to his record, otherwise STFU!

So then I have to ask for those who are for amnesty, as I have asked before, when the government not only refuses to punish people who have violated US law, but rewards people for violating US law(and given how much the average person pays to become a US citizen, the $5000 penalty is a friggin’ steal), doesn’t that essentially put myself and illegals on different planes under the eyes of the law? After all, if you commit a crime, you get fined, get probation, or spend time in prison.
A hypothetical, suppose you get caught committing a crime. You get brought up on charges, and face a trial of your peers.
You go to trial, and suppose you argue that because the government gives a pass to and rewards tens of millions for illegal behavior, you deserve to be acquitted for yours too. Now, it probably won’t work, most people are gonna along with what their gov’t says…but what if your defense works, and you’re acquitted? What if others do the same and are also successful?
Unlikely, yes, but hell, OJ got away with murder, mostly because Johnnie Cochran successfully used racial demagoguery in his defense, people are susceptible to these sorts of things.

This year, in the middle of the amnesty fight, the Bush administration quietly increased the fees for legal immigration, effectively making it even harder to get here legally. Didn’t see that on cable, did we?
Everyone needs to read State of Emegency by Buchanan. It will make you look into heading for New Zealand permanently. Only problem is New Zealand has strict and “needs” specific immigration laws and most of us wouldn’t qualify. We elect mccain and we will never have similar immigration policies. the week after his victory speach hundreds of thousands will flock across the border.

And what will your “integrity and honor” do for the troops who actually put their integrity and honor on the line by risking it all for you? It will help to elect a Commander-in -Chief who has stated, unequivocally and repeatedly, the s/he will withdraw the troops either immediately (Obama) or on an announced timetable (Clinton). Their sacrifice, and that of their fallen brothers and sisters , will have been wasted.
But, of course, you will feel good about yourself.

All these years I thought my fellow conservatives were adults who assessed the issues and voted analytically to move ahead as many conservative positions and values as possible.
Now what I see is that some folks in the conservative movement act pretty much like left-wing Democrats: Crying and pouting like children rather than acting like adults.
Anyone who truthfully thinks that Hillary Clinton, or G_d forbid the radical Obama, would be better than John McCain is just plain out of control. I guess that is why these folks are talk show hosts and not people to whom we would ever entrust any real responsibility.

Buchanan is nativist and Jew hater. It does not surprise me that some of the folks here using the racist epithet “Juan” McCain are touting Buchanan as a source.
By the way, Congress is required to approve immigration legislation so if you think that the US Congress is going to act in an even more irresponsible manner on illegal immigration that they have with the open borders advocate George W. “Racist epithet?” Juan? How about sell-out, back stabber, liar, etc. etc. Buchanan does nothing for me, so don’t project or stereotype. “Juan” sums up my feelings for Mav. It explains the inherent race baiting in his campaign. Turn the whole issue of rule of law and border enforcement into a humanistic, feel-good, mushy racism/nativism argument. Juan has married into the illegal immigration movement. I for one think it is time for him to drop his given name, and to take his new married name…. or at least hyphenate.

McCain wants too much of what the Dems want.
If it comes down to him or them, I’ll write in Other and vote for a conservative Congress.
McSHamnesty doesn’t deserve to be rewarded for being a borders chickenhawk.

OTB: Curing McCain Derangement Syndrome
By the way, I think you will see McCain reaching out to conservatives starting Wed.

It will be amusing to see if his efforts are as condescending as that piece you linked to. LOL

Well, he shouldn’t forget Mark Steyn

McCain’s reach is presumptively left. We on the right don’t wait for hand outs. Something about looking inward instead of towards the nanny state.
Cold Steel on February 2, 2008 at 10:14 AM
How do you figure that? All that I have read here from the McCain-haters is that he will destroy the conservative movement, that he is not a “real” Republican, and that, for the good of the Republican party, every conservative should put ideology over all and allow the Democrats to win, so that they will ruin the country instead of the GOP. And that, according to you folks, will rejuvenate the GOP and bring it back to its conservative roots.
If that isn’t party over country, I don’t know what is.

Women should not be allowed to vote

I am making an adult choice, SB. You just don’t care to acknowledge it.
I’ll make it plain. I would rather have a President whose foolish proposals conservatives in Congress have a chance of beating back because they can pull the “maverick” wing to their side than someone they can’t fight because the “maverick” wing has one of their own in the Oval Office looking out for them. I would also rather have a President against whom conservatives can starkly contrast themselves than one who, by dint of his party affiliation, stains them so much that the electorate can’t fully distinguish between the two.
Do you have some logic or reason to oppose that or just more “Yeah? Well, you’re a poopyhead” hot air?

Ha! What century are you living in?

Or run for office. And, I’m not even sure about driving or going outside the house without an escort. Iron my shirt!

Terry… he’s doing his part to unite conservative women to Hillary. It’s a slick move to punk McCain. If it’s said enough, it will gain traction. It gives women who need an out to not vote for McCain. Very deviant Tomas.
