Don’t worry E – I never thought you were a McCain adherent, and I apologize if I ever gave you the impression I did.

As for the rest of your post, I think a large amount of the bitterness is present here because of the contempt McCain has shown for conservatives in the last 8 years. While I’m sure there would still be a debate going on if McCain wasn’t in the race, I don’t think it would be as heated as it is now.

But either way, I’d much rather have this debate now, as heated as it it, rather than meekly acquiese to the direction the party is going. Too many people find it too easy to go along to get along, or to leave the kitchen when the heat is turned up. But that kind of mentality is exactly what led the Republican party into minority status for decades, as the party was nothing more than a lite version of the Dems during those times. And that’s exactly where things are heading now – right back to the point where we have an echo, not a choice. That’s not good for the Republican party, it’s not good for the conservative movement, and most importantly, it’s not good for the country. If we just go along to get along now, all we are doing is giving the country a choice between vanilla and lite vanilla. That’s the surest path to being in the wilderness to decades to come, and history bears me out on that one.

I’d rather have this fight, and have it now, regardless of how heated it gets. At least then we have a chance of reversing the direction of the party and going back to a place where we have a real choice in the matter.

Yeah, I would include Kerry in that category, too.

Of course, thats a given. McCain isn’t the loathsome character Kerry is.

I think those who are supporting him based solely on his “electability” are way off base. Put him on a stage with Obama or Clinton and he will be outshined. The polls say he beats them head-to-head, but that’s in theory. I believe the reality will be much different. He doesn’t match up well.

Reminder on Mr. Reagan initiatives:

- was for choice before he wasn’t
- passed amnesty
- increased taxes
- 2nd term had a slew of tax undoings of what was good in first term, and other happenings which distracted a lot
- very open on social issues, way beyond what he let on to believe
- not that religious, or not so much on display
- inclusive, polite to the opposition

- Pulled US Marines from Beirut.

I agree with all your points, but there are more to debate, though not for here/now, even if on topic.

RR is my hero, but for reasons that include some of what he stood for, or was lenient about, including his tolerance on religion and some of the social issues. I’m conservative fiscally, and on the war/s, and not so much on all else. I’m more federalist and independent on those. My point here is not to argue against Reagan, nor for McCain, but to point our how bitter the far right is and how destructive it will ultimately be. Yes, the anti-RINOs will come here and argue just as hard. I remind all of us, Romney is no more conservative than any others. There was a good link in the headlines earlier – one will be on the ticket, and we’ll vote, or we’ll cry in the wilderness for decades to come, while our country slides into socialism, and the world catapults into oblivion even faster.

That “trend” doesn’t mean anything. McCain was in the 80’s at the end of the Reagan administration, and is at 60 now. Perhaps the definition of “conservative” has changed, and John McCain has stayed the same.

“Conservative” includes favoring tax cuts and supply side economics, and goes directly against his “the rich don’t need tax cuts” schtick of 2001 and 2003.

If those numbers were trending upward, you’d say they showed just how conservative he really is, but since they are trending in the other direction, it’s the fault of conservatism for changing.
