McCain’s Super Tuesday ad: Reagan Revolution!
posted at 1:30 pm on February 1, 2008 by Allahpundit
Imagine tuning in to this Monday night, having not paid attention to the campaign but intent on voting tomorrow. How many millions of people are in that position right now? You don’t even need the audio, so evocative are the images. Concise, arresting, superb. Alas. Click the image to watch.
Update (Bryan): Lots of folks including me can’t get the ad to work on Time’s blog. Here’s the YouTubed version.

Beautiful. Beautiful. It’s like McCain walked into a room and a flock of doves flew out from behind him.

Disgusting.
AP, simply by linking to this filth you have become an accomplice to amnesty (and CFR, McCain-Liebs, getting rid of the Bush Tax Cuts, the death tax…you get the idea).

During the 2000 primaries, the Associated Press reported Senator McCain’s joking about people with Alzheimer’s.
This went beyond bad taste because (1) it was known at the time that Ronald Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer’s and (2) the media to whom McCain was pandering hated Ronald Reagan.
It is especially ironic now to see McCain wrapping himself in the mantle of President Reagan.
From Sowell’s column.

Snort. I’m pretty sure we could find footage of Kennedy and Reagan together. Is Ted a footsoldier in the Reagan revolution? Besides, that doesn’t explain McCain’s 20 year slide away from Reagan’s values.

If I hear “Reagan footsoldier” one more time, I’m going to project some vomit.
McCain is simply another Reagan remora – relying upon platitudes unrelated to his own conduct.
More political posturing from the political pigs in perpetuity.
Reagan was the LAST politician that I’ve ever believed in. The ONLY one who I felt good voting for. I guess that that says it all concerning the Republican Party and what it has to offer.

Check out that lifetime conservative rating that was posted recently. He used to hover around the mid-80′s, but in the last few years he has hovered in the 50-60′s. I call that a slide.
To be honest, I haven’t tracked his whole career, but based on the bills with his name on them that have come up in the last 6-7 years, he and I don’t agree on what it means to be conservative. Reagan and I did. That’s about all I can tell you.

McCain has at least forsworn earmarks and is, relatively speaking, a pork battler rather than a pork barreler. That’s kind of Reagan-y.
And have you heard he backed the surge? Well … have you ?!
Pretty thin conservative creds, I’ll grant you, but they’re important ones at least.
Blacksheep on February 1, 2008 at 2:14 PM
Dude…
I detest McCain, I will not donate to the RNC, I will donate to Republican candidates individually.
The only reason McCain could get a single rock ribbed conservative vote is judicial appointments. If Stevens and Ginsburg were in their 50′s I could sit it out and not care. I cannot take another generation of a liberal SCOTUS.
So what if we have been cornered by McCain? Time to close ranks and spend the next 4 yeras RINO hunting. Get busy in your states and congressional districts and get rid of the RINOs. Get busy Texas, get busy California, get busy Florida, lets get back to our roots. Protect the brand.

He didn’t just back it, he was the surge. The President and Gen. Petraeus didn’t do anything. It was the senator from Arizona who came up with that plan. When no other person in the universe was for a surge, John McCain was fighting for it…

Seconded … elaborate, E. Your post could have more than one meaning.
thirteen28 on February 1, 2008 at 2:47 PM
Reminder on Mr. Reagan initiatives:
- was for choice before he wasn’t
- passed amnesty
- increased taxes
- 2nd term had a slew of tax undoings of what was good in first term, and other happenings which distracted a lot
- very open on social issues, way beyond what he let on to believe
- not that religious, or not so much on display
- inclusive, polite to the opposition
Don’t take me wrong, I worship him, more than any of you ever could believe, for taking down “that wall” and that carton house which was the Iron Curtain, and all behind it. I visited his resting place and encourage all of you who can to do the same. It’s inspiring how simply this giant of the free world rests, and inspiring to down all other potentates in the world.
I worship him for his simplistic honesty and single-threaded sense of purpose.
I worship him for having been so tough, while so pleasant.
But all he’s attributed to as an ultra-conservative he was not.

That “trend” doesn’t mean anything. McCain was in the 80′s at the end of the Reagan administration, and is at 60 now. Perhaps the definition of “conservative” has changed, and John McCain has stayed the same.

McCain=Bush lite. If John were up to the job he would have been elected 8 years ago when he was in his statesman prime.

The point having been that all of the current crop are RINOs and the hate is going to destroy any one of them, from within. Yet, one of them will be on the ticket this fall. Dreaming for a Reagan for now, or for 4 years from now, or 8, is futile, and it’s very unlikely for one to emerge. The party is self-destructing for many years, if not for good.
Entelechy on February 1, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Big S; he went from being a ‘B’ student to flunking the conservative test; a ‘moderate’ he is. To try to tie himself to Reagan- someone I’ve knew politically from 1963 all the way through, I have only one thing to say:
“John, I knew Ronald Reagan; Ron was a friend of mine. And you, Sir, are no Ronald Reagan!“
michaelo on February 1, 2008 at 3:09 PM
Thanks for responding.
While you do raise some good points, there are still some counterpoints that can be raised as well.
On the issue of choice, fair enough. But by the time he ran in 1980, he had come around on the issue, and there’s no doubt in my mind that by then his conviction was firm. Some will call that a flip, but at least speaking for myself, I don’t mind a flip if it’s genuinely based on reflective thought and conviction. RR left little doubt that his was such.
On taxes, in the net, he still cut them drastically when you compare the effect of his original cuts and the subsequent increase that occured in 1982. The overwhelming majority of Americans paid less in taxes at the end of his term compared to the beginning. And the net effect of that spilled over into the economy, which gave us the first strong growth without inflation in over two decades after the “index misery” years of the 1970′s.
On amnesty, the deal he compromised for was to allow the then 3 million stay in exchange for real border security and enforcement, believing in the good faith of those he compromised with. His failure there wasn’t one of core beliefs, but rather, his misreading of those with whom he compromised. I bet if he was around today and could be asked if he’d do it all over again, he would have done things differently.
True, he wasn’t very religious, but he never, never showed contempt for those who were, and certainly never referred to them as “agents of intolerance”.
And while he was able to be gracious and pleasant with the other side of the aisle, he also stood very firmly on his conservative convictions, despite all the screeching and howling. Moreover, he never, ever showed contempt for those on whose support he relied.
I don’t agree he wouldn’t pass for a conservative today. He would be scrutinized more heavily, without a doubt – but then again, that’s a tribute to how successful he was as a champion of conservatism in the first place.

Andy in Agoura Hills on February 1, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Please.
“Conservative” includes favoring tax cuts and supply side economics, and goes directly against his “the rich don’t need tax cuts” schtick of 2001 and 2003.
If those numbers were trending upward, you’d say they showed just how conservative he really is, but since they are trending in the other direction, it’s the fault of conservatism for changing.
Right.

Dearest thirteen28, I’m not a McCain adherent at all. His time was in 2000, and he didn’t make it. If he had any grace, and believed in graceful ageing, he’d just retire and leave us alone.
I agree with all your points, but there are more to debate, though not for here/now, even if on topic.
RR is my hero, but for reasons that include some of what he stood for, or was lenient about, including his tolerance on religion and some of the social issues. I’m conservative fiscally, and on the war/s, and not so much on all else. I’m more federalist and independent on those. My point here is not to argue against Reagan, nor for McCain, but to point our how bitter the far right is and how destructive it will ultimately be. Yes, the anti-RINOs will come here and argue just as hard. I remind all of us, Romney is no more conservative than any others. There was a good link in the headlines earlier – one will be on the ticket, and we’ll vote, or we’ll cry in the wilderness for decades to come, while our country slides into socialism, and the world catapults into oblivion even faster.
RR’s tent is in tatters, and he is crying from the grave.

The blank stare on McCain’s face when Paul asked him about the Council of Economic Advisors haunts me. He doesn’t seem very competent on anything outside the war and he doesn’t have a vision for the country (at least not one I can discern). He doesn’t represent a new direction for the country.
I think those who are supporting him based solely on his “electability” are way off base. Put him on a stage with Obama or Clinton and he will be outshined. The polls say he beats them head-to-head, but that’s in theory. I believe the reality will be much different. He doesn’t match up well.
Spolitics on February 1, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Of course, thats a given. McCain isn’t the loathsome character Kerry is.
Speakup on February 1, 2008 at 4:06 PM
Don’t worry E – I never thought you were a McCain adherent, and I apologize if I ever gave you the impression I did.
As for the rest of your post, I think a large amount of the bitterness is present here because of the contempt McCain has shown for conservatives in the last 8 years. While I’m sure there would still be a debate going on if McCain wasn’t in the race, I don’t think it would be as heated as it is now.
But either way, I’d much rather have this debate now, as heated as it it, rather than meekly acquiese to the direction the party is going. Too many people find it too easy to go along to get along, or to leave the kitchen when the heat is turned up. But that kind of mentality is exactly what led the Republican party into minority status for decades, as the party was nothing more than a lite version of the Dems during those times. And that’s exactly where things are heading now – right back to the point where we have an echo, not a choice. That’s not good for the Republican party, it’s not good for the conservative movement, and most importantly, it’s not good for the country. If we just go along to get along now, all we are doing is giving the country a choice between vanilla and lite vanilla. That’s the surest path to being in the wilderness to decades to come, and history bears me out on that one.
I’d rather have this fight, and have it now, regardless of how heated it gets. At least then we have a chance of reversing the direction of the party and going back to a place where we have a real choice in the matter.
