Maybe MM’s right. Maybe it’s time to start thinking about vice presidents. Good lord.

Geraghty’s eyeballing the polls and thinks he’s a serious chance of sweeping … the south.

Exit question reprised from earlier this week: Is it possible to buy an election? Exit answer: No it is not.

There’s no national primary. I’m not being nasty, but for a while Giuliani continued to lead (or do well) nationally, while coming behind Paul in the individual states.

I’m not saying it’ll be the same for Romney, but I’ve found national polls simply unreliable.

amerpundit on February 1, 2008 at 3:34 PM

I like your caption. Game over indeed.

Jeff_McAwesome on February 1, 2008 at 3:34 PM

Ah nuts.

Jaibones on February 1, 2008 at 3:34 PM

A prime example of the evil fallacy of “voting.”

It’s Athens 413 B.C. all over again.

ebrown2 on February 1, 2008 at 3:34 PM

Close ranks conservatives, call your congressmen, get busy banging the drum for conservatism.

Theworldisnotenough on February 1, 2008 at 3:34 PM

I’ll see you guys a little later. Right now I think I’ll just mosey on over to the Emergency Room.

RushBaby on February 1, 2008 at 3:35 PM

War’s over man, Wormer dropped the big one.

Dudley Smith on February 1, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Over! Did you say, Over? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

It wasn’t long ago, and Giuliani was a shoe-in for the nomination. Now, he’s not even in the running. Politics are a fickle thing.

Anyway, I’m votin’ for Reagan.

OhEssYouCowboys on February 1, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I may be a hopeless optimist, but that’s just crushing.

Look’s like it’s McCain’s “turn.”

And looks like we’ll be Heiling Hillary or Brock.

BKennedy on February 1, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I think the talk radio blogger alliance against McCain sank Romney. It certainly left me cold and as I keep saying is far to similar to what liberals say about Bush.

Dash on February 1, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I’m with Michelle - I think Wes Clark is probably a good guess for Hillary and Huckabee is practically a VP-in-waiting for McCain.

CP on February 1, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Geraghty’s eyeballing the polls and thinks he’s a serious chance of sweeping … the south.

Huck hurts McCain, not Mitt in the south.

That was months ago before any primaries or caucuses. Super Tuesday is four days away.

Come on Mitt, you need a freakin’ miracle.

BKennedy on February 1, 2008 at 3:38 PM

Huckabee is practically a VP-in-waiting for McCain.

CP on February 1, 2008 at 3:37 PM

McCain doesn’t need Huck to win the South.

bnelson44 on February 1, 2008 at 3:39 PM

If McCain takes the nomination, despite what he thinks, he’ll be steamrolled in the general. Then he can sit there with his condescending, ignorant smirk while President Clinton or President Obama gives her or his inauguration address. All the while still convincing himself he has the support of the conservative base.

Dudley, sigh, you beat me to it. The ol’ Animal House analogy. Anyway, I didn’t know that you’d posted until after I logged out of my post. I hate the appearance of unoriginality. :O(

Anyway, I’m votin’ for Reagan.

OhEssYouCowboys on February 1, 2008 at 3:42 PM

THIS POLL IS AN OUTRAGE, IT DIDN’T INCLUDE FRED, DUMB BIASED FOX NEWS.

Go Fred!

oh, wait… nevermind.

As much as I don’t like McCain, it is nice to see that money alone wasn’t enough to win. All that’s left now is to decide if you’re willing to vote for McCain over Hillary or Obama, and whether his VP choice would influence that decision.

So far I’m still in the disgusted and petulant “stay at home” camp.

Hollowpoint on February 1, 2008 at 3:42 PM

If he picks Romney as his VP, I’ll vote for him. If it someone who brings TEHHH SUCK…like Huckabee or Graham, or a whole host of others…I will not.

therightwinger on February 1, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Anyway, I’m votin’ for Reagan.

OhEssYouCowboys on February 1, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Why not? Listening to the candidates you’d think they were competing to be his VP.

Hollowpoint on February 1, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Game over, man

Not over, difficult.

Speakup on February 1, 2008 at 3:45 PM

I think it’s pretty simple. People who don’t follow politics at the granular level we do think McCain is a pretty good guy with a great life story, and they don’t really care about the details of his policies. They probably even think that McCain’s “standing up” to the “extreme elements” of the Right is a feature, not a bug. It makes them feel like they are being moderate, or in the mainstream.

On the flip side, the country has just shown over and over again that they just aren’t into Mitt Romney. I’ve come a long way on the guy, to the point where I’d vote for him next week if I could, but he just simply can’t get any serious traction on a national basis like McCain can. I had hoped the expectations for McCain had been set so high that Mitt could win something slightly less than half of the delegates next week and it would seem like a momentum changing win for him, but now I think the battle line is about to break and the rout will be on.

Time to start rationalizing and finding the silver linings for a McCain Presidency (there are some out there).

Dudley Smith on February 1, 2008 at 3:46 PM

If he picks Romney as his VP, I’ll vote for him.
therightwinger on February 1, 2008 at 3:44 PM

At this point I doubt they even like being in the same room, much less want to campaign together.

Hollowpoint on February 1, 2008 at 3:46 PM

McCain doesn’t need Huck to win the South.

bnelson44 on February 1, 2008 at 3:39 PM

I didn’t say McCain needed him, I was just commenting on how the situation looks. In my opinion, Huckabee is staying in to earn leverage as a possible #2 and McCain seems to be amicable to that. Might not happen, but it would come as no real surprise.

CP on February 1, 2008 at 3:47 PM

I think the South has a distrust of northern Republicans. My dad still talks about “Rockefeller Republicans” as being a concern, although my folks are planning to vote for Mitt. When I think northeastern Republicans, I think Jeffords, Snowe, etc. Maybe some folks think Mitt is in the same vein.

I like Mitt, but maybe that’s why he isn’t pulling in the South. I also don’t trust polls, though, so I’m going to wait and see what happens.

TX Mom on February 1, 2008 at 3:47 PM

The man can’t even stand up for the First Amendment.

amerpundit on February 1, 2008 at 3:48 PM

I am standing with Mitt Romney.

The same aliance that came together to defeat McCain/Kennedy is now starting to gather round Mitt Romney to defeat McCain in this primary. We still have a voice and we are starting to use it again. I am voicing my protest against my Congressman’s support of John McCain. He will be getting emails and phone calls from me and as many people as I can gather.

We have just barely begun to fight for conservatism in Delaware, and we have already made significant progress.

Stand with Mitt for Conservatism!

MITT 08!

Tim Pancoast on February 1, 2008 at 3:48 PM

Maybe if Hillary loses the Democratic nomination, McCain will let her be McCain’s VP versus Obama. They are virtually interchangeable in their views, beliefs & tactics.

They’re basically cut from the same cloth: Senators, illegal immigration weaklings, use the same dirty tactics in winning primaries, No real backbone and both aren’t conservatives.

Planet Boulder on February 1, 2008 at 3:49 PM

I think the South has a distrust of northern Republicans.

this is true.

I’m from the south though, but more political savy than your typical voter. So, I find the fact that a Mormon Republican could get elected statewide to Governor, in a State like Mass. to be impressive politically. It means in large part, he tricked them. Much the way Slick Willie did in Arkansas or John Edwards in NC for one election.

Or maybe there’s some merit to the argument Southerers are easily swindled dupes (see: The campaign of Mike Huckabee) and they like to project that fatal intellectual flaw onto yankees.

BKennedy on February 1, 2008 at 3:55 PM

Oh,it’s going to be so much fun going into battle with an ancient, angry, and truth-challenged dude, despised by a sizable portion of his “base,” with about a 2 to 1 disadvantage in fund raising against either Hilly or Oby. Well, at least I’ll have the better part of this year to prepare for the arse-kicking we’re going to get. At least it won’t be as heartbreaking as if we were fooled into thinking we had a chance.

It ain’t over til it’s over! That said, I heard on Leno last night, when he asked John McCain who his pick for VP would be, McCain stood up and introduced Rudy. That’s what I heard.

I just thought of another small comfort I can take, out of something that was once galling as hell.

California is going Democrat, one way or another, my vote notwithstanding.

So I suppose I don’t have to be so preoccupied with the quandary of whether to stand with a nominee I do not want.

Hawkins1701 on February 1, 2008 at 4:00 PM

I agree, but there is still time between now and the election to help forge the conservative candidate for the next election. What Mitt does between now and then matters.

Spirit of 1776 on February 1, 2008 at 4:04 PM

Electing Hillary or Obama in place of McCain may actually save this nation.
Look at the disaster that Schwarzenegger has wrought on California! Does anyone think that McCain will do better??
I have repeated this in other posts, but it needs repeated thousands of times between now and the general election. McCain will attack conservatives with a zeal as hot as anything Hitlery could muster! But, unlike how it may be if a Dem were in the White House, there will be little opposition to McCain. Democrats and RINO’s will all join hand in hand to eagerly destroy the constitution!
McCain will be drunk with giddiness as he targets conservatives for payback!
Rush and Hannity will be first and foremost on his list! The Fairness Doctrine will be enacted so the rest of his agenda, including open borders, amnesty, massive tax increases, global warming mandates to name a few, will be much easier to pass!
But,, if McCain fails in his run for the White House, it may very well be the rebound of the conservative party. First off,, the congress would be rid of McCain!
Republicans will have the opportunity to show clear differences between them and the Dems and have a real opportunity to take over congress in two years. If they can pull that off, they will cut in half the term of Hillary/Obama.
Then, a clear conservative will need to emerge for the next election.
Honestly,, unless Mitt pulls off Super Tuesday or a 3rd party candidate emerges, there is no better choice.
Any conservative who thinks McCain will throw them a bone once he is actually in power and no longer needs to suck up to the ghost of Reagan, is wishing in a fairly tale. Once in power, his dream will be realized and what little pretenses he had will be thrown off. Even his pro-life position I expect to evaporate!

JellyToast on February 1, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Voting in November is a waste of time, McDINO-RINO couldn’t win the upcoming election if he ran against Attila The Hun. He stands no chance of winning period.
One thing is for sure, when Shillery wins, I am going to sell out the hog farm, equipment and all. I am going to sell my machine shop and equipment, hide the money, and sign up for every dam welfare program I can find.
If I am going to be forced to live in a welfare state, I by God am going to be on the receiving end for the first time in my life.
Michigan sucks, taxed my businesses to near bankruptcy, and now the whole country is going to go down the same road. I’m staying home in Nov! God help this country, McDINO-RINO sure as hell can’t.

“On the flip side, the country has just shown over and over again that they just aren’t into Mitt Romney.”

Romney has “Clu Gulager Syndrome.” If you’re old enough to remember the TV action series of the 70’s and 80’s, the real villain was always some slick, graying WASP businessman who was murderously indifferent to the average Rockford on the street. Leslie Nielsen used to specialize in such roles before AIRPLANE!.

That’s the vibe that Romney gives off. McCain played to it in the last debate, and it is one of the reasons that Mitt is doing so poorly.

ebrown2 on February 1, 2008 at 4:11 PM

Then we’ll realize that Democrats control every lever of national power.

billy on February 1, 2008 at 4:00 PM

I’m well aware of that.

We deserve it.

Do not presume there’s any happiness to be had here beyond the cynical kind. Do not presume that I or anyone else not supporting McCain will enjoy this.

But my party is selling out everything it once stood for, and I refuse to support it.

Let the country see first hand, as it has with this Congress, what Democrat governance brings.

McCain doesn’t own me. He can’t have my support after spitting in the face of everything I stand for, and then pretending that he didn’t. His meaningless platitudes cannot buy me.

(If I sound livid about all this, I am. Call it McCain Derangement Syndrome if you must.)

Hawkins1701 on February 1, 2008 at 4:11 PM

So instead of voting for a liberal republican, you`ll vote for a super-ultra-mega liberal? Time to start thinking of your country first instead of what you want. If it`s going o be one lib or the other, go for the one who does less damage to the country. And I know you`ll all bring forth unspeakable hate upon me, but it`s how I feel.

I`m an American first and my COUNTRY come first!

I know hardly any of you can stomach this but I’ve been playing with a McCain/Romney possibility. Yes, you’ll say “Never will Romney say “yes” to that”. But think again.

McCain is the maverick, war hero, “f everyone” who crosses his path. That could also mean the terrorists, and others who don’t wish us well. He doesn’t have executive and economy experience for which Mr. Romney would be excellent.

Temperament - McCain is a nutcase I fear to give the code to the football to, but Mr. Romney could talk to him, reasonably.

If McCain promises to stay only 4 years, just so he could die in peace, knowing that he finally pleased his father/grandfather, would Mr. Romney say “yes”?

So, when McCain gets smoked in the general, is he still the big dog in the RNC and do his cronies still get to pull the Republican strings till the next elections?

I don’t see why not. But why would McCain ask him?

I still have no idea who I’m going to vote for, I will probably decide a couple days before the Texas primary.

Romney’s already said no.

He’ll still be a big dog, no doubt. Presidential candidate again? Doubt it. His cronies will no doubt search for his RINO successor, but perhaps they can be fought a bit before then.

Mitt will only by 65 by that time, but I’m not sure he’d run again.

I guess that’s why I’m wondering whether more damage will be done by letting McCain monopolize the Republican party apparatus or letting Obama have his way with us, cleaning out the RNC trash, and starting over.

McCain was always going to be the choice. I’ve already explained why so I’m not going to explain again. -These numbers are what I expected in December.

But I think I’m going to modify my position on whiny anti-McCain conservatives. -Just a couple of days ago, I was of the mindset that people like Rush, Michelle and Ann Coulter were hurting our election chances and hurting the GOP. But every time I hear, as I just did with Ann on Neil Cavuto’s show, that she would, “vote for the devil over McCain”, I realize that this MDS discourse is helping Johnny Mac.

The more rabid McCain derangement coming from conservatives, the more Independents and average Republicans back McCain. Kind of like how Michael Moore pushed rational people away from Kerry and towards President Bush. lol

So the more “Conservatives Act Like Left-Wing Lunatics“… the better.
