Just a note:

My dad was a Navy corpsman on Iwo. He was only 19. Prior to that, he was with the Marines at the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Leyte and Luzon. On Iwo alone, over 800 corpsmen were killed or wounded. Some Division and Battalion casualties – for corpsmen on Iwo – exceeded 60%. 4 corpsmen were awarded the Medal of Honor on Iwo.

This is just a reminder that the taking of Iwo, or of any other island in the Pacific, included the sacrifices of Navy corpsmen – as any Marine will tell you.

Sometimes, I think that this is forgotten.

My father was one of those corpsmen, also. Thank you for recognizing their sacrifices; to a man, every Marine I have ever spoken with considered their “docs” fellow Marines in every way.

For those that remember and know of the American Japanese
island hopping closer to Japan by the American Forces,
would be good in a educational sense if you can gut it.

I’m not going to compare or trivilize the War on Terror,
but Islamofachists are absolutely gutless and cowards in
comparison to the Japanes soldier of(World War Two,in that
context).The Japanese was a visicous enemy who didn’t hide
behind woman and children.

The fame of Iwo Jima flag raising aside, Mr. Jacobs was just 21 when he was part of that operation.

Imagine living all these years after one’s youth with those experiences shaping your world view. The WWII generation is awesome. I deliberately did not use the term “greatest.” Brokaw spoke too soon. Our current military operations are creating just as awesome a generation of young men and women who will have the rest of their lives colored by what they are doing now in Iraq and Afghanistan.

God Bless Ray Jacobs and Godspeed to our current troops. You all are awesome beyond words.
