Interesting take on the situation from Peggy Noonan: [McCain]'s like Moe Greene in "The Godfather," when Michael Corleone tells him he's going to buy him out. "Do you know who I am? I'm Moe Greene. I made my bones when......

For much of 2007 Newt would appear on one of Sean's shows and tease that he was going to throw his hat into the ring. Since Newt decided that he couldn't unite the conservative base, maybe his prescriptions aren't the winning formula.

Ok - I am new participant here, but I have been reading for a while and I decided to say something tonight.

A capella you made a lot of assumptions in your statement, many of which were far worse then what Al-Ozarka said in the first place. Being born again does not turn one into a wimp who must think that everyone's ideas are honest and valid. In addition you got personal, which at least the comment you quoted was not.

Also as to Huckabee and Romney for that matter (and let me just say I have not really decided who I like at this point) I think that Al-Ozarka has a point that what many people on this blog have a problem with is the religion. But they will not just come out and say that, they would rather come up with a list of more acceptable things to criticize, even if the criticism is only true if viewed within certain parameters.
Finally I think that it is interesting that this topic came up on this particular thread since it really has nothing to do with the topic of the thread.

I'm tired of the hand wringing from the base celebrities.

They are all appalled that McCain could be the nominee but are yet not sufficiently outraged enough to actually endorse the last remaining plausible conservative, Romney, and act to help him win.

None want to take some responsibility and get out of the stands and actually endorse him. Although a few have. They want to just blast McCain and his inevitableness and lament the long odds of Romney and how flawed he is too.

Leads me to believe they actually want McCain to be the nominee and perhaps lose.

If McCain loses then he's had his shot like Dole did and we can ignore McCain in 2012. But are they prepared for potentially two terms of McCain?

The fix is in. Hucabee has cut his deal with McCainesty and is staying in only to suck votes from Romney. Watch the debate tonight and you'll see McCain and Huckabee team up on romney. Huckabee won't have a negative word about McCain.

This has been orchestrated by the RNC establishment and it makes me sick to my stomach. I hope that the conservatives in the remaining primary states will vote for Romney and note throw their votes away on Huckabee. A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain.

McVain has only 34 more delegates (93 total) than Romney (59 total), and both need 1181 to win.

Well, also it’s nice revenge on the Romniac Attack Poodles who spent most of 2007 talking smack about Teh Fred.

Hollowpoint on January 30, 2008 at 5:52 PM

Really? Like what? People were frustrated that he was running a terrible campaign, but for the most part there were no "attack poodles" going after him and the criticism was limited to CFR. I wish the same thing could be said for the people who treated Mitt like chum in the water.

I will say once again that I've had it up to here with Fred Heads (not Fred supporters).

How electable is a guy so untrustworthy as the ONE Republican who claims to be a conservative but signed legislation that enabled tax-payers to fund abortions in his state?

Al-Ozarka on January 30, 2008 at 6:05 PM

That was the law of the land. He had no choice in the matter. Do try to get your facts straight and not rely on cutting and pasting from Huckabee support groups.

Wait, won't McCain have "Da Base" if he wins the nomination? Isn't the base those people who will vote R no matter what? If they then choose not to vote for their candidate then it's a matter of turnout. If McCain is the eventual nominee then he will define the party's platform. We might just have to get used to some of it, like amnesty. Republicans can possibly be the party to bring the illegals into the system as citizen taxpayers.

Is the real problem that there is now a new Mainstream Media that consists of Rush, Hannity, et al who have ideals opposite those of McCain, Ahnuld, etc.? This nomination is a fight over orthodoxy. If McCain wins, he will be able to reform the current orthodoxy. I for one welcome the new Party Overlord.

Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee should be locked in the green room, but they won’t be.

Hi, Bryan. Nice post, but I disagree. Huckabee's got my vote if he makes it to my state. I'm tired of the media trying to whittle this primary season down as quickly as possible.

Fred was my guy but he's gone. Huckabee is far from perfect and one of your great posts from about a month ago made me think seriously of forgetting about him. It was the post referring to the Southern Baptist schism about a decade ago. I'm very conservative as to my Christian faith and your post affected me.

But Fred is gone and as much as I don't like much of what has been reported on Huckabee for the past couple of months, he's solid on two of the most important issues for me. Abortion and gay marriage.

Whatever happens with Romney and McCain will happen. It's not like there's a great choice between the two anyway.

I agree. Sad, isn't it? We don't ask for much. And we'd be so much more willing with just that little itty bitty glimmer of hope.

*sigh*

Ain't gonna happen. He's gonna give us all the big F-U the second he gets sworn in... I can almost hear that nasty little laugh of his... *shudder* Make it go away now, please.

Ain’t gonna happen. He’s gonna give us all the big F-U the second he gets sworn in… I can almost hear that nasty little laugh of his… *shudder* Make it go away now, please.

Ummmm, I don't know how else to say this, but "D'uh!"

No kidding, some people in America may find it disturbing to vote for a minister, regardless of his religion. I hate to break it to ya, but during Kennedy's run for POTUS, they actually wanted to use his catholicism against him! Absurd? Yes, in light of how stupid it may seem, but there it is. And that was just a short 50 yrs ago.

IF McCain becomes the GOP nominee (something I hope to never see) I would NOT vote for him unless:

1. He prepared a list of SCOTUS nominees from whom he would PROMISE to appoint. ACTUAL NAMES. Names that we can confirm are TRULY STRICT CONSTRUCTIONIST.

2. Recinds his position on torture and GITMO. Pouring water down the nose of a suspected terrorist in hopes of saving American lives DON'T BOTHER ME A BIT. And to say that would 'make us like them' is stupid. THEY cut folk's heads off.

3. Guarantee that we would COMPLETE A PHYSICAL BARRIER FENCE the ENTIRE Mexico border. None of this 'virtual fence' sh*t. And PROMISE NEVER TO REWARD ILLEGALS WITH AMNESTY ( and a small fine in return for citizenship- IS AMNESTY!)

Unusual request?! Absolutely- but necessary.

God help the GOP!

God have mercy on you big-headed, meddling bloggers, talk-show hosts and television commentators.

There’ll be no use in “modernizing” the party now…you guys have destroyed it.

No, but what I DO know is that Romney, once elected, will serve "The People" he was elected to serve, so this baiting of us with "flip flopper" makes you no better than the dems.
