Breaking: Silky dropping out

Just across on Fox. Now we get to find out for sure if his supporters are Obama voters or Hillary voters in disguise. Stand by.
Update: What happened to the “kingmaker at the convention” strategy? Unless he’s flat out of cash, which I doubt, there’s no reason for him to get out before Super Tuesday unless he’s made a deal with Obama (as Bob Novak speculated). Obama’s got a tough haul next week but an Edwards endorsement, especially on the heels of Teddy’s, keeps the feeling going that there’s a tidal wave towards him within the party.
Bill Kristol’s been teasing all week about a forthcoming Al Gore endorsement too, although why a conservative would have the inside scoop on that is beyond me. I think he’s just trying to make trouble. But if it does happen, that tidal wave is a full tsunami.
Update: The AP is in love. Check out that lede.
Update: “It just became clear it wasn’t going to happen.” Yeah, that’s been clear since New Hampshire. Again, what about King Silky, ruler of the other of the two Americas, tossing his delegates to Obama or Hillary at the convention? Did he look at the polls in the Super Tuesday states and decide he woudn’t be able to scrape together enough to matter? The race is so close between the other two that’s hard to believe.
Update: Kaus hasn’t weighed in yet but I’ve got a hunch per his 2:01 a.m. item what his theory’s going to be.
Update: For what it’s worth, the AP story says he won’t endorse immediately, which I take to mean before Super Tuesday. So maybe this is a modified version of the kingmaker strategy where he hangs around to see what happens next week and then, if Obama surprises and is still in contention, throws his endorsement to him afterwards to help swing the post-Tuesday primaries. I don’t know, I don’t get it.
Update: The new swing vote — white liberal men, all hopefully as silky as the Pony himself.
So where does Edwards’ support go? In South Carolina, Edwards won white men. Could this become the new swing voting group? Obama does well with white men in general election match-ups, but has seen his support drop among these folks in the primary. Now, if Obama has any shot at beating Clinton, he’s going to have to win this key voting bloc. It’s rare white guys are considered a swing vote, but in a Clinton vs. Obama race, it appears they will. Obama needs them more than Clinton.

Heard rumor, yesterday, that in an Obama admin, Silky might be up for AG consideration.
That’s enough to make ya’ wake up in a sweat.

Yeah he’ll endorse Obama. Guaranteed. Anyone disagree?
CABE on January 30, 2008 at 9:08 AM
May he spend the rest of his years rattling around in his castle in Edwardsville.
EJDolbow on January 30, 2008 at 9:09 AM
And just like that, Superkalifragilistic Tuesday is back up for grabs!
I think that the Breck Girl’s support was mostly an anti-Hillary vote, so I think the majority may go to Obama.
JamesLee on January 30, 2008 at 9:11 AM
Son of a b**ch, I bet he’ll throw his weight behind Obama (where his supporters would likely go anyway, if they went anywhere). I suspect it (an endorsement) will be in exchange for a promise of some high Obama administration position.
Now, I started that last paragraph “son of a b**ch”, because while it’s fun to watch the Clinton’s self destruct, WE NEED HER TO BE THEIR NOMINEE! It’s been endorsementmania for Mr. “Change” this week.
Oh, and I still maintain that Obama ought to hire more security and food testers. The Clinton Machine knows this is a one time shot for Hillary, and they’ve spent decades plotting this thing. They will not go quietly, and if I were Obama I would be concerned for my health/life.
RightWinged on January 30, 2008 at 9:11 AM
Yep, I agree. And he will get the AG spot. Count on it.
conservnut on January 30, 2008 at 9:12 AM
Considering how Silky was piling on Hillary along side Obama, it will be absolutely no surprise to anyone when he endorses the Messiah.
Mindcrime on January 30, 2008 at 9:12 AM
Go Barry!
Hillary IS the most dangerous person alive in America today.
Sure, things will suck under Obama, but at least people that work in the White House won’t be getting murdered.
Save a life, vote Obama.

Wow, I wouldn’t want to be there today.
On second thought, yes I would!

Now he’ll have more time to spend on his hair.
Hopefully Coulter will now place a call to Mrs. Edwards (in a reversal of the Hardball silliness) and see how she’s coping with yet another big failure…

Damn! And I just going to go get my tickets for his Road To One America Poverty Tour! I’m soooooooooo crushed!
pilamaye on January 30, 2008 at 9:31 AM
John Edwards is speaking about poverty down here in New Orleans today (the same city he started his campaign). I suspect the text will be full of the “two Americas” crap and how Obama is the person who can best protect the people that Edwards is so “passionate” about protecting.
If you listen closely, I’m willing to bet you’ll even be able to hear the 30 pieces of silver jingling in his pocket.
highhopes on January 30, 2008 at 9:31 AM
Does this mean there AREN’T really two Americas?
Or is it that the second America is composed of a bunch of silky haird losers?

mycowardice on January 30, 2008 at 9:42 AM
Here’s a thought. If Obama wins it all, and Silky makes AG, how long before we have a Human Rights Comission, just like canada?
a capella on January 30, 2008 at 9:42 AM
You know Im sort of poud of my party. Even after florida.
Whatever else is said I believe that the vote yesterday showed that 9/11 still echoes in our party. McCain was the toughtest on the WOT on our side and while people are worried about the economy it still motivated republicans to back McCain
On the democratic side the guy who called the WOT a “Bumper sticker” is now being kicked out. Edwards should have won in South Carolina and Floriday but he threw away his advantage there to run as a class warfare specialist and abandoned the America on foreign policy.
Yeah we are stuck with McCain. But the dems are lurching to the far left with their remaining two candidates at the same time we are forced back to the middle. McCain vastly appeals to independant voters and if Hillary wins they hate her so we will gain a block of voters who will back conservatives on the lower ticket because they like McCain.
We needed some backbone in the WOT because it isnt over. That is the good news. The bad news is we have a long hard battle in front of us on so many issues such as Immigration.
Some issues are too important to sit out and we still can rebuild the reagan coalition. Only now we have to do it from the ground up.
So I say to John Edwards and the democratic party take your “Bumper sticker” class warefare and shove it while we fight the WOT which was never a slogan.
William Amos on January 30, 2008 at 9:44 AM
Kristol is a conservative? When did that happen?
Valiant on January 30, 2008 at 9:46 AM
As a moderate, I think the smartest thing the Republican party did this year is to run a bunch of centrists. The Democratic Party did not. Hillary likes to portray herself centrist but she has revealed herself through the years. I was actually considering voting Obama and would have if he more to the center but I looked at his record and he’s not. How can you say you will unite when nothing in your record shows you are going to meet people in the middle?
The Republicans on the other hand are all mostly moderate. So if the Dems lose in December it’s because they didn’t meet people half way. We did.
terryannonline on January 30, 2008 at 9:54 AM
Sorry November, I meant.
terryannonline on January 30, 2008 at 9:55 AM
Bad idea dude… Hillary is VERY beatable, and we want her to be their nominee.

I wonder who he will endorse and if that will effect how his supporters will vote?
mattyj86 on January 30, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Here’s a wild stab in the dark:
Edwards endorses Obama, Obama makes Edwards his pick for Attorney General. Edwards would never accept a Vice President slot, but Attorney General? You betcha.
Seixon on January 30, 2008 at 10:01 AM
I disagree…
First he will bow down, kiss his feet, be allowed to touch the hem of his cloak (the race cloak, any argument he can drape that over and make it disappear), and then he will ask if he is worthy to endorse Obama.
The best part would be if Obama said that Edwards must shave his head to show his commitment…but that would be too much to ask for.
right2bright on January 30, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Yep, I’m enjoying the sparring between Hill/Bill and Obama as much as anybody, but we do need Hillary to be the nominee. I don’t see Edwards endorsing her, though, but who knows? I also didn’t see Rudy failing so badly in FL, quitting and endorsing McCain, either.

Heard he’ll endorse McCain.
Silky wants to be on the stronger Democrat ticket.

I was just wondering about that last night. Isn’t the Enquirer is owned by a Clintonite?

Hear that? That’s the world’s tiniest violin, playing just for you, Silky.
You did your best, champ.
amkun on January 30, 2008 at 10:19 AM
Updated for my pleasure.
CABE on January 30, 2008 at 10:21 AM
It’s likely neither Obama nor Clinton has satisfactorily committed to an Edwards role in the next admin, thus the auction has commenced. He’ll commit before Super Tuesday, if he gets the right stimulus. The bigger question is whether either of the two think his endorsement will move a significant enough percentage of his supporters to matter to them one way or the other.
As for the delegates Edwards has, I don’t know the party or state rules that govern them. It’s possible they could go whereever they want if released or after first vote.
Dusty on January 30, 2008 at 10:21 AM
I dunno who the Dem candidate would run with, but why would anyone choose Edwards? He brings nothing to the table.
Anybody remember his performance in the 04 debates? He’s a loser and a failure. He’d just drag the other down probably.
amkun on January 30, 2008 at 10:21 AM
I’m just wondering at what point Mrs Silky Pony will be throwing in her two cents here.
pilamaye on January 30, 2008 at 10:22 AM
Neithr Hillary or Obama will ask Silky to be VP. He rarely pulls more than 17% of the vote anywhere!
kcd on January 30, 2008 at 10:27 AM
This doesn’t make any sense to me unless both candidates rejected a deal outright.
Mark Jaquith on January 30, 2008 at 10:27 AM
LOL!
I can’t say I’ll miss a millionaire screaming about corporate greed and veterans living under bridges, but he did make it somewhat entertaining. I have a feeling most his voters will break for Obama.

Just watched Hill’s little snippet about how she’s taking the news of his dropping out. I couldn’t help but notice that she said she would persuade his voters to go for her- and she leaned forward when she said it. A very aggressive gesture. The soundbite alone doesn’t reflect it. Also more emptiness about giving away this, that, and the other to everyone, everybody, and their collective mothers.

Mazztek on January 30, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Didn’t read all the other comments yet, but maybe Hil has offered him nothing yet, but Silky expects her to win, so he is giving her a chance to come up with something.
Why is AG so great? Doesn’t seem to come with much long-term job security?

Hillary is the closest thing to a moderate on the Democratic side AND she’s hated enough to motivate the Republican base to go out and vote. All the idiots who prefer Obama to Clinton are the reason why we’re all gonna be ****ed when the Messiah takes over and turns America into a third world country. Enjoy your liberal utopia ass holes.

In all seriousness Darth. Does the thought of Obama, raised by a radical Muslim stepfather, scare you as much as it does me? You know his mother did’nt have any influence on him as a boy. The Muslim men don’t take kindly to being told anything by a woman. Sadly, I don’t even think it will be an issue if he’s the nominee! The press wil be so scared that someone will call them racist and un-pc. (Exception- Christians: They don’t mind slapping any of those around every chance they get)
kcd on January 30, 2008 at 12:02 PM
EXACTLY.
Plus, should in the unfortunate event of a Democrat victory in November, she’ll be slightly less of a disaster in terms of the WOT than Obama would be.
Two reasons to pull for a Hillary over Obama.
As for Edwards as AG, I can’t even bring myself to consider that horrible possibilty.

lodestonejames on January 30, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Addressing the media, John Edwards described the condition of his campaign. “It speaks to you through me,” the Edwards said, “And I have to tell you right now — I didn’t plan to talk about this — right now I feel my campaign. I feel it’s presence. It’s inside me, and it’s talking to you. In Iowa my campaign said, `I’m fine.’ Then in New Hampshire, it said, `I’m having a little trouble, but I’m doing O.K.’ In South Carolina, it said, `I’m having problems.’ In Florida, it said, `I need out.’ “
