Video: President Bush’s tax joke

This is from last night’s State of the Union address. President Bush talks taxes, slams Bill Clinton and other liberals who have said that they would love to pay more taxes (but, oddly, don’t), and then demands that the tax cuts be made permanent.

Update: Joe Carter emails to suggest that Bush should open up a “Tax Me More Fund” like Mike Huckabee did. Works for me! Put it on the web and we could keep a public running tally of all the money that Warren Buffet and Bill Clinton aren’t contributing.

Blowback

Definitely good. Great camera shots of Hillary et al during that too.

Saying the words Tax Relief to the Democrats has the same effect as a stun gun.

fogw on January 29, 2008 at 9:09 AM

It would have been great if they had superimposed the IRS address and phone number on the screen. Bush could have then said, “send your checks or money orders to the address on your screen” or “Operators are standing by”!

BacaDog on January 29, 2008 at 9:10 AM

I wish part of the stimulus package brought by everyone in Washington would have been to make the tax cuts permanent. It would have been the perfect opportunity to include it, but it was left at the wayside, which makes me think it’s a political football and not a serious issue.

I’ve missed this GW

I smiled slightly when he delivered his line, but I laughed out loud when the camera cut to the Democrats sitting there stone-faced, with Hillary front and center.

I’m sure she was carefully instructed on what facial expressions to make. Can’t be agreeing with W and calling for change!

“Don’t detax me, bro!”

ReubenJCogburn on January 29, 2008 at 9:17 AM

Excellent.

I don’t understand people like Warren Buffett, who say they’d “love” to pay higher taxes, but no doubt have store their money in off-shore tax havens, or those who say they want socialist healthcare.

Why don’t these people care about their fellow countrymen who don’t want to and can’t afford to give the government more of their money?

BTW I wonder what Nancy whispered to Cheney at the end of that clip. I’m surprised she even deigned to speak to such a lifeform.

That shot of Charlie Rangel snickering just made me throw up a little in my mouth.

txsurveyor on January 29, 2008 at 9:20 AM

That was excellent video production-right when President Bush was talking about those who want to raise taxes, the camera was focused on Charlie Rangel smirking. He is odious.
Here’s an economic stimulus package:do everything you can to clear off your credit card debt.
I can’t say I’m there yet, but it’s a goal. Just like with government, the more of your own money you get to keep, the better. Clearing credit card debt will do more for you than the government ever will.

Yeah. I know what you mean. If they make the tax cuts permanent, he won’t be guaranteed the money for his “Monument to Me.”

Fat, gravel-voiced douche.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on January 29, 2008 at 9:23 AM

What Democrats were thinking…..

“But, but from each according to his ability, to each according to his need. That’s the way we build a dependent healthier middle class. We’re Democrats. That’s the way we roll.”

This was Dubya trying to throw a bone to the displeased conservative base that made him… That line about rich liberals donating their tax cut to the IRS is essentially ripped right out of talk radio and the blogosphere. Not complaining, just pointing out that it’s not a Bush original.

I wondered the same thing… In fact she leaned to say something to him a few times throughout the evening, and each time it reminded me of a nerd begging a bully not to beat them up. She looked so nervous and he wouldn’t even look directly at her. He half-heartedly leaned in to hear what she was saying and just sort of has no reaction other than a smirk. The other instances I remember he didn’t even react as much as he did in this clip. You know she was nervous.

By the way, no one is pointing out that she was as blinky as ever. Remember last year what a crazy person she looked like with all the blinking? Perhaps we’ve just gotten used to it, but everytime I looked she was still doing like 2 blinks per second… and still looking like a crazy person.

RightWinged on January 29, 2008 at 9:27 AM

GDubs should send BJ and Shrill a little something extra in their tax bill…….like an audit!!! Turn around is fair play, right?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on January 29, 2008 at 9:27 AM

I “heart” Dick Cheney. Notice how he stares down at the Democrats while GWB makes this comment. I loved this moment, and I agree with the comment upthread. The whole Republican party misses this George W Bush.

On another note, did everyone catch BHO making out with the Swimmer? Talk about throwing up in your mouth a little. What a lovefest!!!!

When your skin is pulled THAT tight, you have to consciously blink or your eyeballs will turn to raisins. No way those lids can close on their own. Behind closed doors, she licks her eyeballs like a gecko.

The tax cuts should be permanent but let’s do the job Congress refuses to do and call this what it is- The Congressional CYA act of 2008.

This “package” will do little to stimulate the economy in a meaningful way. All that it really does is give politicians cover going into an election year. Now they can claim that they “did something” about the economy by giving everybody a couple hundred bucks. That pandering includes “rebates” to people who don’t even pay taxes and eliminates those that pay the most taxes from getting any sort of break because (in “rat” terms) they are greedy bastards who don’t “deserve” a break. The Senate “rats” want to expand the pandering to include more free gummmit money for illegals, the jobless, and the uninsured.

Personally, I hope GWB vetoes the thing.

highhopes on January 29, 2008 at 9:48 AM

I don’t know what is wrong with you people!

Regulating the lives of millions of American citizens too dumb to be trusted in a fast food joint with their own health is serious business!

I don’t think any of you have the faintest grasp of economics.

This is not a laughing matter.

Radio controlled thermostats and aerobic activity monitoring chips aren’t free you know!

Guys like Warren Buffet don’t overpay precisely because they know the Government will waste their money. But it’s ok with him if I pay more, or if I’m legislated into paying more…..then it’s ok…

gee thanks Warren

Tim Zank on January 29, 2008 at 9:58 AM

If you have lots of money in the bank(or get paid in large sums) and want to make sure others don’t build up such wealth the graduated system we have in place works wonders.

Once you hit the top brackets its a wall and you have to earn a lot of money to make the same progress you did at lower brackets. This is clearly ANTI-middle class, yet the left still seems to think high upper brackets are a good thing!

Ignore reality! Vote democrat!

Correct. However, it’s good that this line is now in the Congressional Record.

Basically saying, “Put up or shut up.”

eanax on January 29, 2008 at 11:16 AM

That video speaks volumes about the democrats contempt for the American taxpayer.

Mitt should use it as a campaign talking point.

What the Democrats really think about tax relief.

Look at cheney. You can tell he knew the punchline was coming.

I swear I saw Dick Cheney smile in that clip. Awesome.

CliffHanger on January 29, 2008 at 11:47 AM

I just like that the Republicans are laughing and clapping and the Democrats, you can see it on their face, is a mixture of bemusement and wounded pride, almost as if they wanted to sniff and say “well yeah I’ll pay it”.

And Cliff-Hanger, I saw Cheney smile too.

Defector01 on January 29, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Just have a check mark on your tax return that says I will pay the extra amount…Pretty simple and it would weed out the hyps.

I detected a terrible disturbance in the Force too

LimeyGeek on January 29, 2008 at 12:16 PM

Give me permanent tax cuts and more tax cuts instead of a one-time check from the government any time.

Dems slammed on national TV. it feels so good.

Mallard T. Drake on January 29, 2008 at 12:18 PM

Whenever I see a liberal complaining about taxes or mention someone like Buffet I post this….

I’ve noticed that those who favor tax rate increases tend to justify that opinion based on an objection to the deficit and the increasing national debt. Well here’s the good news: it’s not necessary to wait for the federal government to force a tax hike on everyone; it’s possible to take a grass-roots approach. Here’s what the US Treasury has to say (see this page at their website):

http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/resources/faq/faq_publicdebt.htm

How do you make a contribution to reduce the debt?

Make your check payable to the Bureau of the Public Debt, and in the memo section, notate that it is a Gift to reduce the Debt Held by the Public. Mail your check to:

Attn Dept G
Bureau Of the Public Debt
P. O. Box 2188
Parkersburg, WV 26106-2188

The deficit isn’t very large now, so it shouldn’t take much of a grass-roots movement to completely eliminate it. (As I said, I think my taxes are already high enough, but I’ll be keeping my eye on the numbers to see if this movement catches on.)

CaptainObvious on January 29, 2008 at 12:25 PM

I thought it was funny how the Republicans AND the gallery cheered at the tax cut quotes – but the entire Democrat “formation” just sat, sullen and still.

And Rangel just needs a Rangelectomy. He’d be fine after that.

Merovign on January 29, 2008 at 12:53 PM

I’ve been saying this to speechless liberals since Reagan.

jukin on January 29, 2008 at 1:33 PM

Does Warren Buffet even pay personal income taxes? My guess is he’s incorporated, which is usually what really rich people do to avoid paying taxes.

Remember that old joke from Cheers where Sam bet Robin Colcord a week’s salary? Sam won, but it turned out Robin was incorporated only paid himself $1 week.

Cheney is made of all kinds of awesome. Remember how he destroyed in the 2004 debates? Plus even the mere mention of his name either makes Dems wet their pants or go batshit insane.

And so on.

I loved Cheney’s smirk. Loved it. But I also glanced quickly and took a moment to enjoy Nancy’s simultaneous scowl.

urbancenturion on January 29, 2008 at 4:37 PM

I’ve always loved the idea of a “Tax Me More” Fund (never put that name to it, though). Perhaps it will never happen because liberals know it’s a win-win for conservatives. Either they lose moral superiority or we win leeway to cut tax rates more.

viking999 on January 29, 2008 at 6:47 PM

I do taxes and I have yet to have one person get upset with me because they were not taxed enough.

Tho I have had people making 100k get mad at me because they were only getting 2k back.

Mr. Excitement on January 29, 2008 at 11:03 PM

The left showed they are brain dead because they could not even manage the simple task of putting their hands together. They also proved they are spineless because they could not even stand up to thank the President for returning the citizens excess contribution funds they contributed. Finally, they showed they are not in favor of ever returning any excess funds that the citizens may contribute in the future.
