Early vote counts are expected at 8 p.m. ET, fuller results by 9. High drama on two fronts, needless to say, both in the Romney/Maverick showdown and the last rites coming for Rudy at Giuliani HQ. As usual, CNN and Politico are posting running tallies. Drudge says it’s Romney, not McCain, by a point and a half right now but that’s down a few tenths of a percent from five minutes ago.
Stand by for updates.
Update: The AP tally on Politico has McCain up three with 9% reporting. Drudge has it dead even.
Update: There’ll be a million Rudy autopsies tomorrow but Carl Cameron’s out of the gate with this misleading tidbit: “Some campaign aides privately gripe about what might have been. There are those who believed Rudy could have competed and won New Hampshire.” He did compete in New Hampshire, though — aggressively, in the last few months of last year. He got nowhere.
According to Campaign Media Analysis Group, Mr. Giuliani spent $1.7 million in New Hampshire between November 10 and December 9. During the same period, Mr. Romney spent $1.3 million and Mr. McCain $1.2 million.
Despite being the biggest spender on television in New Hampshire during that period, Mr. Giuliani saw his support fall away…
Put another way, between the beginning of July and early November, Mr. Giuliani polled an average of 21% in New Hampshire. In the following four weeks, when he was advertising heavily, support dropped to an average of 18%.
Update: Here’s the Florida SoS page, updating constantly.
Update: No surprise, Hillary wins.
Update: Fox is running exit polls now. Romney wins among Republicans, McCain wins among independents as Republicans. Too close to call.
Update: Actually, never mind the SoS page. It’s slower than CNN and the Fox News TV totals. Stick to those.
McCain leads by 8,000 votes with 29% in.
Update: CNN has the full exit poll data. McCain won both men and women, which I guess means…
Update: Everything’s coming up Maverick!
ABC’s Karen Travers offers these results, with 85 percent reporting in Pasco County, a bellwether: McCain 36.7, Romney 29.3, Rudy 16.8
Update: Halperin says the Reaper is at Rudy’s door and that an endorsement for Maverick, possibly in LA tomorrow before the debate, is coming.
Update: With 44% in, McCain leads by 35,000 votes. The over/under on a call is 9:20 p.m.
Update: Now 50,000 votes with 51% in.
Update: If you took the under, you win! At 9:11, Fox News and AP call it for Maverick. SECOND LOOK AT STAYING HOME!
Update: So here’s your exit question. Closed primary, and Maverick still wins. How does Romney win competitive states, especially with Rudy ready to throw his support to Mac?
Update: The exit polls were wrong about the absentee ballots. Mitt didn’t win; he split them with McCain.
Update: Is it wrong that I’m already excited to see how Hewitt’s going to spin this for Mitt?
Update: John McCain, conservative icon:
“It shows one thing. I’m the conservative leader who can unite the party,” the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press.
Update: Steyn plays anti-Hewitt: “This is a tough night for the Romney campaign. Fred’s withdrawal should have benefited them more than McCain. If Huck stays in, there’s no prospect of southern victories for Mitt on Super Tuesday. And, if Huck and/or Rudy pull out, their votes on balance are likely to break for McCain.”
Update: NBC says it’s confirmed the Giuliani/McCain endorsement deal.
Update: “The beast is dead.”

I can only hope that Rush absolutely incinerates McCain for the next week, and that maybe we get the same push going against McCain as we did against his amnesty program.

We should wait to see what happens on super tuesday…
I’ll I know is, if McCain is the nominee the conservative movement is weakened…and my vote will be thrown in November.

Past this group therapy, the only input I’ll be up for tomorrow is Rush’s opening. Fox jumped from Romney’s bandwagon like a cheap whore in the space of half an hour. They started spinning McCain’s dishonesty as political answers to Romney’s earlier “attack” ads. I know I’m being a bitterman, but I found myself turning to CNN to get away from the McCain-fest.
Cold Steel on January 30, 2008 at 12:28 AM
It’s not a regional campaign anymore, it’s national. Shouldn’t Romney’s money give him an edge? Or at least counter the media’s McCain-lovefest? I have to think he has a shot.

Not going to happen. The media, the libs, and moderate Repubs are using this opportunity to crush right wing radio. That is a huge talking point on the MSM…Rush, Hannity, Ingraham don’t represent the base…the base has moved left…Rush will back off or risk losing marketshare when the sheep start buying the MSM and establishment BS.

JustTruth101 on January 30, 2008 at 12:39 AM
Hang on, hang on - i thought FL was a ‘closed primary’ - this article seems to be saying otherwise, so I’m missing something here…
” Nearly four in 10 conservatives were supporting Romney, while McCain finished with a respectable three in ten. Underscoring Romney’s appeal to the party’s right wing, he doubled McCain’s and Mike Huckabee’s support from the very conservative. Conservatives dominate Florida’s GOP, comprising six in 10 voters.
More than offsetting that, better than four in 10 moderates and liberals lined up behind McCain, twice the proportion backing both Romney and Rudy Giuliani.”

Mitt’s weak spot for me has always been his lack of focus on the military folks. Those associated with the military vote their safety and their families safety because that is what they have invested. It seems he has no clue what it’s like. I’ve emailed and called his offices several times since October and have never received a response. I guess the military vote let him know what they thought.
Irrespective of who wins the nomination and the presidency, I’ll survive McCain or the dems just as I have survived Carter and Clinton. It’s my kids and grandkids that will suffer from the liberal justices that any of those will appoint to the SCOTUS.

Super Tuesday better not be STUPID Tuesday. Mitt’s the closest thing to a conservative still left in the race. He’d better win. I think Romney will get all the Fredheads, the Ronbots, and the Huckleberries as all their guys drop out. I know McLame won’t.
So Flip Romney is our last best hope. Oy vey!

http://www.positiveatheism.org/writ/mother.htm
The thing is I can tear this article apart.
Simple question to ask Christopher Hitchens is who flew Mother Theresa from Mexico to San Fran before Keatings plane flew her back?
Why did Keating fly to San Fran to meet her? Why did he give her a check, and what was the amount?
I can answer all three questions.
When you are given a chance, talk to Mothers Theresa’s spiritual advisor… (BTW I have talked with Fr McGuire) ask him what is his opinion.

I’m hearing a lot of people saying that there are reports that forty percent of the McCain vote were people who crossed over and changed party affiliation just before the 30 day deadline to vote on the repub side. Why not, since the DNC took away florida’s votes, they had nothing to lose. I’m sensing this was no coincidence. This was not the ‘open’ primary we were told. We really need to re-write the campaign and voting laws in this country. Who the hell’s idea was it to front load a bunch of lib states in the primarys anyway?
Bikerken on January 30, 2008 at 2:09 AM
Yeah, sure, the gang on MSNBC seemed pretty tickled when it was called for McCain…same on CNN…
SuperCool on January 30, 2008 at 2:11 AM
I’m sure I’ll be called a bigot — or gibot — by the usual suspects for this, but I suspect that Mitt’s background as a Mormon missionary has something to do with it. Like it or not, Mormonism has doctrines that are not just different from Christian doctrine, but radically different.
For example: they believe that the Virgin Birth actually occurred by God coming in a physical body and having sex with Mary, that every child born in the world is giving a body to a “spirit” child which was produced by God having sex with one of his wives, that God was once a man, but now is God, and that faithful Mormon men will be elevated to being Gods one day. And these are just a few of the … unusual … Mormon doctrines.
Now, ignoring for the moment all arguments about whether these teachings are true or not, they are definitely in conflict with orthodox Christian doctrine. So Mormon missionaries, to be effective, have to hide some of their beliefs while trying to persuade potential converts to allow them to hold “Bible studies” with them. Otherwise, many of the prospects would be saying, “No thanks.”
In other words, Mormon missionaries learn not to be too straightforward. It’s almost like training to be a slippery politician…

Supporting Romney over Rudy gave us McCain.
I support Rudy and think he would be a much better president than McCain. And as much as I think Romney is total phony and would be terrible as a president, if Romney got the nomination and the choices on the other side are Obama or Clinton, it is no brainer to vote for the Republican candidate.
You folks who are letting emotion drive your decision making could cause us to get a Obama or Clinton for pres.
Don’t be emotional. Vote with your brain.

Suddenly, the idea of President Hillary doesn’t scare me anymore.
What scares me is losing my principles and integrity to beat her. I becomes no better than the “Anybody But Bush” crowd in 2004. If Mitt doesn’t get the nod, I’m not voting Republican, I’ll vote third party.
We been through worse as a country, four years of Hillary is not going to kill us. I take example from my family in Venezuela, they live under a nutjob for a president but they haven’t lost hope. They’re still positive. Life goes on.
I’d rather lose everything on my principles, than to win everything by sacrificing them.

There are very few candidates that would cause me vote for Hillary or Obama. McCain is one of those candidates. McClain, if elected, is as likely to follow conservative principles as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is likely to embrace Zionism.

I don’t think you stated this well, or mean what you said. You cannot really survive if you know your kids’ and grandkids’ futures are imperiled.
There are several fossils on the Sup. Ct. who are on life support just waiting for Bush to leave. They won’t be able to wait much longer. If McCain is Pres., they will likely retire soon into his first term. McCain will still have to prove to the conserv. at that point that he is on board, so he is likely to be tough about the appointments.
His backstabbing won’t start until later in his term, or after he runs for re-election in 2012.

I feel like I am on a “political rack” being pulled apart. One part wants the Republican party to stay in power, but not under McCain. I find Mitt even more palatable then McCain, and he is far from seasoned enough to be an effective leader, and who knows where he stands on some issues.
*
So an arm to McCain, a leg to the Republican party, Mitt is pulling on the other leg (pulling my leg, get it?), and my other arm is being twisted by the thought of “what the hell”, we survived Carter, how much worse could it be?…then all the “how much worse could it be” jokes fly through my mind.

Suddenly, the idea of President Hillary doesn’t scare me anymore.
Well,,, guess I gotta agree on that. She’s lookin pretty good these days.
If McCain is the nominee, I have to ask myself,, which party do I want to see destroyed for many years to come? If McCain wins, it would spell doom for the Republicans and the nation for years to come. If the Dems win, it will spell doom for their party and the nation for many years to come.
Also. if Hillary wins,, there is the chance Republicans could take back congress in two years.
Bottom line for me,, I will never vote for McCain. I have more respect for an outright enemy than a traitorous, lying snake who sleeps with the enemy, eats with the enemy, works side by side with the enemy, but now comes around in need pretending to be my friend.

Too Whitebread to alot of voters.
He represents the sterotypical white male Republican. When he says he will bring change, it doesn’t carry much weight because of his image.
Sad to say it but image and appearance seem to mean much more than substance. It has been that way for a long time.

I can understand this sentiment, but it is irrational. Prior to Fred getting out, McCain was tied with Huckadoodle on my last choice list. But there is just no way that I am going to stand aside and allow the Clinton tag team to get back into office. No way. And do remember that when Bush tried to shove shamesty down our throat we rose up and bapped him over the head with it. The same will happen with a president McCain. But immigration is only one of the big issues at stake: the War; taxes & spending; court appointments; holding the line on abortion-on-demand … And of course there is the matter of common decency. Do will really want to live through another four years of Wee Willie headf**king (and lying about it) impressionable young ladies in the People’s House again? Brrrrrr. That’s simply not true. Romney made himself a viable candidate and Rudy failed to get traction in NH where he spent a lot of money and time, or Florida where he made his stand. None of that is Mitt or Mitt’s supporters’ faults.

Right now, as I look forward, I am only sure of 1 thing. Staying home on election day is not good enough. I am going to walk to the voting booth and vote for Obama. If the Dem nominee is Clinton then I’m going to write in a friend of mine. We will have our own damn election. I will ask each one of them a few questions and whomever I think would make a better president I am going to vote that person in. McCain will never get my vote and from this moment forward my goal is to prevent him from being president. I never thought I would say that about a Republican nominee.

Most say McCain/Cheney 08 in the old Bush/Cheney style, with different phrases underneath like: “Just when you thought it was over”; “Halliburton.com”; “Now it’s time to kick ass in Iran”; and the last one reads Jeb Bush/Dick Cheney 08 “Just to piss you off”.
How I vote in this election comes down to a choice of VP. He damn well better pick someone conservatives won’t mind voting for…

I was just reading Michelle’s front page, reading a letter from a Vietnam vet—someone please refresh my memory. Did McSlime actually come out against the Swifties? Did he side with Kerry? Was it just supporting his McSlime/Feingold travesty the justification?

I’m reminded of the fact that to get Reagan, the country had to endure Carter for 4 yrs. I’ll not vote for Hillary, but I’m willing to sit home and let her “rule us” if it means that another Reagan will emerge in 2012. It’s a bitter pill, but I’d rather blame the Democrats for the disaster of PrezHill than to have to take responsibility for PrezMac.
Gartrip on January 30, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Well, yes, if the friend of mine who emerges from our own little election turns out to be one of the few nice looking women I have in mind, then yes, that is very plausible. This will be the first election I say the following words, “whoever panders best will get my vote!”
Thanks for the advice argos. Now go hug a RINO or something.

yep.

bastard. It wasn’t only his service, McSlime, it was his actions AFTER he came home that tarnished Vietnam Vets for a generation.
People (conservatives) need to be reminded of this.

You know, after the media tells us over and over who the “electable” candidates are, can you name me the last truly authentic Republican to lose a general election? I can name you a whole list of RINOs who have lost the general. But can you name me an authentic Republican candidate who lost?
McCain is going to get killed in this general because Republicans will stay home. Especially if Obama is the nominee.
Zetterson on January 30, 2008 at 10:52 AM
They left out “…against me.”
McCain - blechhh. I’ll never vote for that despicable liar. Ever.
jdawg on January 30, 2008 at 10:55 AM
To his great discredt, yes, he did. But the Swifties (who had truth on their side) won the day.
His criticism of the Swifties worked to Kerry’s favor. But, no, he did not “side” with Kerry. Rather, he campaigned hard for George W. Bush in the ‘04 election.

Sounds kinky. Enjoy!

Mmmm, nope. I’ll be supporting Mitt throughout the primary. I still think he will win this thing. He is the intelligent choice for the GOP. Florida was a harsh wake-up call, but I don’t think that the conservative base of the party has really made its desires fully KNOWN yet. McCain actually believes that he has won them over. I think he’s in for a surprise on that.
Now YOU go hug the paperhangin’ son-of-a-beetch of your choice.
argos on January 30, 2008 at 11:12 AM
I agree with that absolutely. Now I’d like to see you scold McCain to his face on it.
argos on January 30, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Richard Nixon, 1960. — No, wait! Gerald Ford, 1976. Yup. — No, wait! Was George Sr. a RINO?

Sob!
What a bunch of babies.

For which he deserves credit. Interestingly those most critical of Bush swung his way, while those that favor Bush swung to Romney.

We got brave men and women in uniform in combat right now, and it’s going to get worse.
If it’s McCain then I’ll pull the lever and go home and puke. But I couldn’t look in the mirror if by staying home I made cr*p like Hillary or Obama Commander in Chief. That’d be like shooting them in the back.

Yes, Romney won the conservatives and the “true Republicans” (as Fox was calling them last night). But I really don’t think that Florida is representative of the overall GOP. And I think that the Martinez & Crist endorsements played a big part. I guess we’ll just have to see next Tuesday. But more to your point, I think that most voters have damn short memories, compounded by the fact that a good chunk of GOP voters are rather Bush weary (or BDS weary — as in bushderrangementsyndrom), and they see McCain as someone who can play well with the partisans who rule Congress. I think they’re probably right about that, but I (for one) am not in a mood to play. I want to kick democrat ass every damn day and twice on Sunday. Cheers!
Go Mitt!!

But guys, we need the Judges of the guy who stated that his personal whim trumps the Constuitution.
Who wanted CFR even at the cost of “quote First Amendment Rights”.
Because I want Judges that are selected by a man that has no respect for the Constitution; and believes that the Constitution needs to be read to allow him to have his way first.
Otherwise a Democrat might pick someone bad?

I guess Broward County citizens are at the top when it comes to civic duty.

No respect for the Constitution. You’re sure you’re not overstating things just a wee bit?
argos on January 30, 2008 at 12:22 PM
There’s about a ten cent difference between McCain and Hillary. Either way, we’ll get a Lib…
