Results: Floridamania! Update: Hillary wins; Report: Rudy to endorse McCain tomorrow; Update: Fox, AP call it for McCain; Update: “I’m the conservative leader who can unite the party”

posted at 7:43 pm on January 29, 2008 by Allahpundit

Early vote counts are expected at 8 p.m. ET, fuller results by 9. High drama on two fronts, needless to say, both in the Romney/Maverick showdown and the last rites coming for Rudy at Giuliani HQ. As usual, CNN and Politico are posting running tallies. Drudge says it’s Romney, not McCain, by a point and a half right now but that’s down a few tenths of a percent from five minutes ago.

Stand by for updates.

Update: The AP tally on Politico has McCain up three with 9% reporting. Drudge has it dead even.

Update: There’ll be a million Rudy autopsies tomorrow but Carl Cameron’s out of the gate with this misleading tidbit: “Some campaign aides privately gripe about what might have been. There are those who believed Rudy could have competed and won New Hampshire.” He did compete in New Hampshire, though — aggressively, in the last few months of last year. He got nowhere.

According to Campaign Media Analysis Group, Mr. Giuliani spent $1.7 million in New Hampshire between November 10 and December 9. During the same period, Mr. Romney spent $1.3 million and Mr. McCain $1.2 million.

Despite being the biggest spender on television in New Hampshire during that period, Mr. Giuliani saw his support fall away…

Put another way, between the beginning of July and early November, Mr. Giuliani polled an average of 21% in New Hampshire. In the following four weeks, when he was advertising heavily, support dropped to an average of 18%.

Update: Here’s the Florida SoS page, updating constantly.

Update: No surprise, Hillary wins.

Update: Fox is running exit polls now. Romney wins among Republicans, McCain wins among independents as Republicans. Too close to call.

Update: Actually, never mind the SoS page. It’s slower than CNN and the Fox News TV totals. Stick to those.

McCain leads by 8,000 votes with 29% in.

Update: CNN has the full exit poll data. McCain won both men and women, which I guess means…

Update: Everything’s coming up Maverick!

ABC’s Karen Travers offers these results, with 85 percent reporting in Pasco County, a bellwether: McCain 36.7, Romney 29.3, Rudy 16.8

Update: Halperin says the Reaper is at Rudy’s door and that an endorsement for Maverick, possibly in LA tomorrow before the debate, is coming.

Update: With 44% in, McCain leads by 35,000 votes. The over/under on a call is 9:20 p.m.

Update: Now 50,000 votes with 51% in.

Update: If you took the under, you win! At 9:11, Fox News and AP call it for Maverick. SECOND LOOK AT STAYING HOME!

Update: So here’s your exit question. Closed primary, and Maverick still wins. How does Romney win competitive states, especially with Rudy ready to throw his support to Mac?

Update: The exit polls were wrong about the absentee ballots. Mitt didn’t win; he split them with McCain.

Update: Is it wrong that I’m already excited to see how Hewitt’s going to spin this for Mitt?

Update: John McCain, conservative icon:

“It shows one thing. I’m the conservative leader who can unite the party,” the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press.

Update: Steyn plays anti-Hewitt: “This is a tough night for the Romney campaign. Fred’s withdrawal should have benefited them more than McCain. If Huck stays in, there’s no prospect of southern victories for Mitt on Super Tuesday. And, if Huck and/or Rudy pull out, their votes on balance are likely to break for McCain.”

Update: NBC says it’s confirmed the Giuliani/McCain endorsement deal.

Update: “The beast is dead.”

A couple of thoughts from a guy who’s been in conservative circles a while… Not Obi-Wan, not Middle Cheese… I need to give this guy a nickname.

1. A few weeks ago, the CW was that the Republicans were doomed to weakness by means of a protracted battle not likely to end short of a brokered convention, whereas the Democrats were united behind Hillary.

2. I’m a Fred guy. It’s galling to have to support McCain, but I will. Romney made it easier by promising ethanol subsidies in Iowa, promising auto subsidies in Michigan, and now aligning himself with the AARP in Florida. We at least all know the ways in which McCain will grate.

3. Alarming statistic: the number of Democratic voters almost equals that of Republican voters, despite the absence of any real contest in the Democratic primary. Our unity can’t come soon enough.

4. The Republicans need an inspired VP choice.

The Ugly American on January 29, 2008 at 10:36 PM

In all seriousness look on the bright side. McCain will probably be the nominee in another week while the Dems slug it out. Gives him more time to lay the groundwork for the general election.

If the message is “conservatives bail out and follow the pied piper limbaugh over the cliff” he will concentrate on the moderates, independents and left of center dems. If he wins the conservatives have no real leverage in a McCain administration.

So go ahead with the self immolation plans.

So, your point is that Florida is irrelevent, because it is shaped like a penis. That’s just strange. I fear you. -JayHaw Phrenzie on January 29, 2008 at 10:30 PM

It is good that you fear me, Hee-Haw. Ask anyone here and they will tell you that Don Nemo knows how to return a favor.

My point is that the the Florida primary will not make or break this primary – in spite of what the MSM and the punditocracy would have you believe. After all, they said the same thing about Iowa…then New Hampshire…then South Carolina. See the pattern?

Additionally, the state of Florida is shaped like a giant, flaccid, penis. Don’t believe me? Go to Google Earth and see for yourself.

This is interesting never knew this

In July 1968, McCain’s father was named Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command (CINCPAC), stationed in Honolulu and commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater.[3] McCain was immediately offered a chance to return home early:[34] the North Vietnamese wanted a mercy-showing propaganda coup for the outside world, and a message that only privilege mattered that they could use against the other POWs.[38] McCain turned down the offer of repatriation due to the Code of Conduct of “first in, first out”: he would only accept the offer if every man taken in before him was released as well.

William Amos on January 29, 2008 at 10:44 PM

Prediction McCain in a squeaker. Rudy’s remaining supporters can see the writing on the wall, will not throw their votes away, will vote for McCain instead. Huck’s legions will vote for their man in spite of reason, costing Mitt the election. Consequently, Huck will beat Rudy, but McCain takes the state.

In the morning, Rudy will drop out and endorse McCain. McCain will roll on 2/5 and select Rudy as VP.

If Rudy does stay in for the debate, he will be the ultimate stalking horse for McCain and will savagely attack Mitt. With nothing to loose, the old nasy Rudy will come back. It may get ugly.

FAIR’s estimate of the state’s illegal alien population as of 2007 is about 810,000 persons.

The state government has estimated the illegal alien population higher — about 420,000 (per the Associated Press, April 22, 1997). These are mostly new illegal resident aliens since 1986, as the amnesty for illegal aliens, for which 156,000 applied from Florida, converted the bulk of older illegal aliens in legal permanent residents. The decline in the INS estimate from 1996 to 2000 is also likely due to Cuban, Haitian and Nicaraguan and some other illegal aliens having benefited from amnesty provisions and gained green cards.

I just can’t vote for McCain in the general. I’m in MO, so I’ll vote for Mitt on Tuesday, but I have no hope now. If McCain gets the GOP nomination, for the first time in my adult life I will sit out an election. There comes a time when you gotta let people have what they want and deal with the consequences.

JustTruth101 on January 29, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Okay.

How to regroup for Mitt? It’s not all lost. True, McCain has the inside track…. but he’s not guarenteed just yet. I don’t know what Huck’s voters are going to do…. Huck has no chance, and this race so far has had the voters coalesce around the top two people in every state. Will they go for McCain or Romney? I honestly don’t know: I think much of Huck’s remaining support goes to McCain on the whole “I’d never vote for a Mormon” schtick.

So what about Rudy’s voters? Again, they are mostly security republicans. But Rudy was also running on fiscal grounds, so I think more of them will go for Romney.

The good news is, Romney STILL wins Republicans. How on earth we got this crazy primary system where every early state has let independants vote, I don’t know. That’s the only reason McCain is still in the race.

So what happens? We aren’t going to have this bit where the Dem’s aren’t competing, so everyone jumps in for McCain. That means McCain’s major base, independants and liberals, drops off–they all want to vote in the brewing war of feminists and racists on that side of the aisle.

What did the exits show for Florida? McCain got a huge chunk of voters that said they were “independant.”

Remove the majority of them, and suddenly, the race is in flux.

So it’s not over yet! Let’s keep hope alive!

THE CHOSEN ONE on January 29, 2008 at 10:59 PM

CHEWS ON ONE-

He can’t win a primary.

He already won three primaries, Einstein.

Wyoming, Michigan and Nevada.

I am a Christian, Conservative, church goer and I believe that Mormonism is a cult but I support Mitt. He has morals and is the best Conservative left in the race.

azcop on January 29, 2008 at 10:57 PM

me, too, in all respects…but I think it is over for Mitt. The sheeple want to be ruled by a smiling old man who they know lies to their face just so that they can feel good about themselves when they turn to walk away. They know old johnny mac will stab in the back as they walk away, with that creepy smile still o his face saying “thank you, my friend, thank you.”

JustTruth101 on January 29, 2008 at 10:59 PM

Mitt Romney’s concession speech via YouTube. :-(

He looks beaten and a little pissed. Super Tuesday it is.

Darnell Clayton on January 29, 2008 at 10:59 PM

Can you imagine if McCain and Obama are the two nominees? It would mean that no matter who won, Ted Kennedy would run the country.
Jim-Rose on January 29, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Wasn’t Kennedy heavily involved in NCLB, the Medicare bill and the amnesty bill? One could argue he has been running it (at least on the domestic front).

What’s going to happen to testicles in 2008 – RushBaby on January 29, 2008 at 10:40 PM

They will be shaved, clipped, sun-dried and then stashed in President Clinton’s personal lock-box, of course.

Any other questions?

NemoParticularis on January 29, 2008 at 10:44 PM

I’m guessing you didn’t actually click on the link.

RushBaby on January 29, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Hucks supporters could go for Mitt. He carried the Evangelical in Florida.

azcop on January 29, 2008 at 10:54 PM

Not when McCain makes Huckabee his Veep.

Mark my words, it’ll happen. McCain needs the Evangelical vote, and only Huckabee can deliver that for him.

It’ll be McCain/Huckabee, and I’ll be home on election night with the TV and internet off.

Enoxo on January 29, 2008 at 11:01 PM

I simply will not vote for McCain. Ron Paul is closer to what I want than him.

Bonhomme on January 29, 2008 at 11:02 PM

Before I finish this bottle of Jim Beam and vomit, I’d like to point to the liberal CNN nitwit who is arguing the conservative position vis a vis McCain in this manner:

The GOP is one SCOTUS judge from a clear conservative majority, and if they sit out the election and a Dem wins, they will have three liberal judges to replace the three who will die and/or retire in the next four years.

McCain sucks.

Jaibones on January 29, 2008 at 11:02 PM

me, too, in all respects…but I think it is over for Mitt
JustTruth101 on January 29, 2008 at 10:59 PM

No disrespect taken. I am just hopeful McCain does not win on Super Tuesday. He is the death of the Republican Party much like Carter killed the Dems for 12 years.

azcop on January 29, 2008 at 11:02 PM

Hucks supporters could go for Mitt. He carried the Evangelical in Florida.

azcop on January 29, 2008 at 10:54 PM

If Florida is any indicator, no, they won’t.

The election in Florida may ultimately be decided by the number of Giuliani and Huckabee supporters who decide to abandon their first choice in hopes of influencing the outcome.

Among Huckabee supporters, 87% have a favorable opinion of McCain. Only 52% have a favorable opinion of Romney.

Rudy’s supporters were more likely to go for Mitt, but not by enough to make a difference:

Among Giuliani supporters, 82% have a favorable opinion of Romney. Just 61% have a favorable opinion of McCain.

I’ve about decided that Derbyshire’s sole purpose right now is to piss off conservatives and pimp for paul.

jp on January 29, 2008 at 10:50 PM

The thing I don’t get about Derbyshire is that he’s an immigrant, yet seems so unhappy about his adopted country.

Can someone please explain to me how McCain, after the amnesty debacle and the 2006 election in which we clearly told our people we weren’t going to accept RINOism anymore, WON FLORIDA??? – TheGoblinKing on January 29, 2008 at 10:42 PM

Because Florida is filled with immigrants, both mexican and cuban? Amnesty for everyone in 2008!

*gag*

I wonder how much of his own money he spent trying to get FL?

bnelson44 on January 29, 2008 at 11:04 PM

azcop on January 29, 2008 at 11:02 PM

Not only is he the death of the republican party, he is the worst possible leader…he’s nasty, has a terrible temper, lies and distorts the truth, wll do anything to get his way, has thought about crossing over to the democrats, but since he has an R behind his name, the R’s won’t fight him in Congress the way they would fight Hill or Obama…we are screwed. I knew conservatives were a minority, but man, this *ss-kicking is starting to hurt.

azcop on January 29, 2008 at 10:57 PM

I’m Baptist, I’m not sure if I would consider it a “cult”, however if you actually do some research into it, it does have some things that I would consider “strange”.

Being able to tell the truth, to me is one of the most important morals and Mitt doesn’t and hasn’t, it not his religion that makes me cold on him, it’s his shades of gray with honesty.
