Audio: Mitt Romney laughs at Ron Paul, interviewer morphs into full-blown Paulnut

posted at 2:36 pm on January 29, 2008 by Bryan
Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

It starts off reasonably enough, but Romney starts to school host Tampa Bay 1040 WWBA host Mark Larsen and by extension Ron Paul on taxes and entitlements and you can feel the rails start to give way. When Romney has the audacity of hope to laugh at Paul for suggesting that the way to keep the nation secure is to jettison our intelligence agencies and blame ourselves when jihadists attack, well, the rails fly apart. Romney senses the madness and leaves the host to his rant. Turns out there was a Ronulan underneath the whole time.

Now, lest anyone think that I’m advocating the current system, income tax and all, I’m not. I’m not a fan. But I don’t think Paul has the answers, and he comes off as a crotchety old man who is in over his head on every issue. He doesn’t even know who wrote his newsletter, or so he claims, so why should anyone believe him when he says what he says about taxes? Or foreign policy or anything else. If you’re not a racist yourself but you can’t manage to keep your personal newsletter from devolving into a racist cesspool, you can’t or won’t disavow the various miscreants who are publicly supporting you and you’re happy to accept donations on a day that your supporters chose to explicitly celebrate a long-dead terrorist, you ought not be handed the keys to the executive branch of the US government. Ever. Sorry. No number of discrete ideas that sound good on paper but would never survive Congress can overcome all that.

That his supporters can’t engage non-supporters without yelling and carrying on just seals the deal as far as I’m concerned.

Romney is unelectable do to the huge number of people that will not vote for him under any circumstances!

You could say the very same thing about your boy: Mike Huckabee. Except with Huckabee the “huge number” are actual conservatives who see right through his tacky, pandering, bible-thumping populism. And then there are all the awesome supporters of Mike Huckabee who really make me want to vote for him. Because if there’s anyone who I want to see boasting a smug smile of self-satisfaction, it’s people like Harald, apacalyps and popularpolitics.

HebrewToYou on January 29, 2008 at 4:01 PM

We had to explain to him the other day that there are more than one Christian denominations.

You mean Southern Baptist Churches aren’t the be-all, end-all of Christian thought? Why, I declare!

Mitt doesn’t agree with him so he rants about Iraq?!

He’s unhinged!

malan89,

Actually most studies show that it a minimum of 20% of the republican party that will boycott him in a general election…you know what that will give us…President Hillary Clinton!

Thuja,

I would but you must understand I stated that fact a while back and now I have 6 mormons here that follow my every post and personally insult me and call me a bigot non stop.

It’s not fair or honest of them.

That should be McCain or Rudy

It’s just a simple fact…Romney is our weakest candidate!

Oh, and I loved the picture on the main page, Bryan, although this interview reminds me more of the other V. You know, the sci-fi one from the ’80’s, where you think you’re talking to a normal human, and suddenly they rip their face off and there’s a lizard person underneath. I think that pretty much describes the experience that a lot of people–besides Mitt–have had with Paulentologists.

Fun reading here. When I lived in the People’s Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1994, I got to see Romney labeled everything short of Hitler by Teddy and his friends in the Mass. media. I came away suitably impressed then. Now that he is running for President, people in his party and on this site are labeling him a liberal just short of Ted on the political spectrum. It is fun to watch. Hopefully all of you that are all or nothing about your candidates realize that our are better than theirs (Paul is not one of ours) and once the primaries are over, we need to coalesce around our candidate or get used to saying President Obama/Clinton.

The Opinionator on January 29, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Note, I have not made a decision yet for the primary, but I am damn sure going to vote republican in the general election.

We’ve all witnessed scenarios where Mormons have been gang-shunned. The gang-shunning of Mormons has become too commonplace in our culture both physically and metaphorically. And then there was that movie where Jodie Foster played a Mormon who was violently gang-shunned. It’s time we stand up and be counted and put a stop to this gang-shunning once and for all. We owe it to America.

Family 1

Family 2

Family 3

BTW, you have not even managed to shake my conviction that Huck is and always will by a shyster. Your too busy attacking Mitt and Mormons with innuendo than actually putting up a solid argument that Huckabee is a conservative and deserves to be president.

PrettyD_Vicious on January 29, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Bryan,

Winning the nomination is one thing…getting the whole of the republican party to vote for him is another.

Technically he could win the nomination with 35%-40%…but he can’t win the general election with only 35%-40% or even 80% of republicans voting for him.

Oh, Romney. Well yeah, he’s changed a lot of his positions. Just like everyone else running for President on the Republican side.

As for other candidates, most of them have something admirable about them. Sure, Huck raised taxes in Arkansas. Ever drive I-40 between Little Rock and Memphis? Prior to Huck, it was the worst stretch of interstate in the country. He raised taxes to fix it among other things. And, as my family in Arkansas will attest, they still have very low taxes. Guiliani did a great job in NYC. I used to work in Philly, NYC and the northeast. NYC was a paradise compared to Philly where the mayor had taken a traditional liberal approach to governing. McCain lets down on several issues but is the best for national security. None of our candidates are perfect. But they are all accomplished.

The second had an admitted oversample of southern evangelicals, so its results are somewhat suspect.

Bigotry tends to be more pronounced against labels than against people — meaning just because people say they vote for a Mormon in a theorhetical situation, doesn’t mean they wouldn’t vote for Mitt Romney versus Hillary Clinton in a real election.

Personally… I don’t give a crap who other people refuse to vote for. I only get one vote and I intend to use it for the candidate I want. That’s what makes it my vote. What a novel concept, huh?

That explains a lot right there. “We’re gonna look under the hood, find the problem, and fix it!”

I noticed the pansy assed interviewer didn’t raise his voice and talk smack until after Mitt was on the air.
JayHaw Phrenzie on January 29, 2008 at 4:25 PM

He didn’t mention anything at all about Iraq during the interview at all. The only thing he talked about was Ron Paul’s plan to tax 1% of your account ever time you checked your ATM balance, and how OJ Simpson’s former pool boy proved that would net the same revenue to the federal government as the current income tax.

It was only after Mitt took off that the guy started talking about the REALLY crazy stuff.

logis on January 29, 2008 at 5:25 PM

“…because of a-holes like Mitt Romney.”
It seems so natural to me to laugh at Ron Paul because his ideas don’t reflect reality. Saying Romney was laughing at 4000 dead US troops is a little ridiculous though. This host was just as crazy as the candidate he so obviously loves.

LEAVE RON PAUL ALONE!

Who said I am a member of the LDS faith?
csdeven on January 29, 2008 at 5:13 PM

Actually, that would tend to explain an awful lot.

(And, btw, you spelled it wrong.)

logis on January 29, 2008 at 5:28 PM

huckabee fans and ron paul fans are very, very similar…

therightwinger on January 29, 2008 at 3:28 PM

There’s about a ten cent difference between the two…

Romney has a “lie and buy” strategy. This is the type of person you want as your President?? He is simply not honest. That is not an opinion, it is a fact. Period.

You got something to say about it? I’m ready.

Yes the cradle will rock And I say rock on. Uh!

He is simply not honest.

Neither is Mike Huckabee, the candidate you’ve loudly supported. So what does that make you? Oh, right. A hypocrite. That is not an opinion, it is a fact. Period. ;)

You never make a coherent point. That is not an opinion, it is a fact.

Buy Danish on January 29, 2008 at 5:36 PM

This is insane. Look what you guy’s have done. You’ve done your best to eliminate a decent, fine, man in the person of Mike Huckabee (he’s still in it though) who would ACtually change the nation instead of just talking about it like the others do ad nauseum, and look what you’ve went and done. You’ve got liberal John McCain and Mormon Mitt Romney at the top instead. And neither one can beat Nurse Ratchet in the general election. What kind of strategy is that?? Have you lost your minds!!

Keep talking, someday you’ll say something intelligent.

apacalyps on January 29, 2008 at 5:41 PM

It’s so sad that you make all of these excuses for Romney when you know he is a flip flopper liberal.

HaraldHardrada on January 29, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Now, whose campaign do you work for?

Please do something intelligent; stop talking.

Neither is Mike Huckabee,… blah blah

HebrewToYou on January 29, 2008 at 5:36 PM

As Charlie Brown’s teacher would say, “Mu wa wa wa wa”. I zone out when the Romney attack ads start playing again against Gov. Huckabee…

apacalyps on January 29, 2008 at 5:45 PM

Romney is like the “Seinfeld” character George Costanza — who would always say, “Just remember, it’s not a lie if you believe it”.

apacalyps on January 29, 2008 at 5:46 PM

Well, check that out. Two screen names with very similar posts, but who don’t post at the same time. Is there an anti-Romney tag team at work? Or one person posting under two different names?
