Open thread: State of the Union, lame duck edition! Video: Bush on defeating Al Qaeda in Iraq

9 p.m. ET on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc etc. Dispense with the laundry list, Dubya, and pull out the stops on one last appeal for resolve in Iraq. That’s the only way to redeem what’s otherwise bound to be a forgettable speech. It’s his last big audience with the country and it’d give the good people at Al Jazeera, who are front and center tonight, something to talk about afterwards. Why waste the opportunity?
We’ll get some of that, I’m sure, and if there’s a clipworthy moment it’ll probably come in that context, but be prepared for a long hard slog on the way. While we wait, enjoy this. Click the image to watch.

Bleh. I hate State of the Union speeches. Most of them turn into ‘how can I spend your money’ fests.
I will probably watch it, unless I decide to do something more fun, like watch the weather channel or pick aimlessly at the loose strings on my couch.

I’ll sit through the highlights afterwards, but I can’t stand all the fake clapping and standing ovations everytime Bush finishes a sentence. Example:
“There was a time when America was great.(.. clapping.. repubs standing up and clapping…) And if we work together we can make American great again. (… clapping.. ) If we seek the right commitments, we will regain the trust of the American public and the world. Uh Oh. Every time bush does one of these you’ll see his biggest enemies kiss his tail. It’s usually Shiela Jackson Lee and Kucinich. In fact last year Kucinich shook once as Bush left the podium then circled around and pulled some Washigtonian Flank move to get in a second handshake as he left the door.
