Video: McCain, Graham, Huckabee continue to smear Romney on Iraq

I posted part of the old GMA interview in yesterday’s item on this but the video doesn’t have the full quote. Let’s remedy that now:
QUESTION: Iraq. John McCain is there in Baghdad right now. You have also been very vocal in supporting the president and the troop surge. Yet, the American public has lost faith in this war. Do you believe that there should be a timetable in withdrawing the troops?
MR. ROMNEY: Well, there’s no question but that — the president and Prime Minister al-Maliki have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about. But those shouldn’t be for public pronouncement. You don’t want the enemy to understand how long they have to wait in the weeds until you’re going to be gone. You want to have a series of things you want to see accomplished in terms of the strength of the Iraqi military and the Iraqi police, and the leadership of the Iraqi government.
QUESTION: So, private. You wouldn’t do it publicly? Because the president has said flat out that he will veto anything the Congress passes about a timetable for troop withdrawals. As president, would you do the same?
MR. ROMNEY: Well, of course. Can you imagine a setting where during the Second World War we said to the Germans, gee, if we haven’t reached the Rhine by this date, why, we’ll go home, or if we haven’t gotten this accomplished we’ll pull up and leave? You don’t publish that to your enemy, or they just simply lie in wait until that time. So, of course, you have to work together to create timetables and milestones, but you don’t do that with the opposition.
The whole point of this line of attack is to lump Romney in with the Democrats as quitters; the fact that he’s vowing here to veto any Democratic timetables puts the lie to it. Question for Maverick, then: What’s the problem with Bush and Maliki making up a schedule of things they’d like to see happen by certain dates, provided that a missed deadline doesn’t automatically trigger withdrawal? The objection to Democratic-style “tripwire” timetables is that they contemplate pulling out before our goals are achieved. Nowhere does Romney recommend that. He does allude to eventual withdrawal, but so what? Unless McCain’s suggesting that we should stay in Iraq forever even if we’re not needed, as some sort of lobotomized test of resolve, then what’s the harm in looking ahead to getting out? Accomplish the mission, then leave. Wake me when Romney says something that omits the first part of that statement.
Three clips for you, then. First and most boringly, McCain himself repeating this bogus charge on MTP this morning, replete with impressive index card. Does crack interviewer Tim Russert press him on a transparent distortion of Romney’s argument? Did he press him about Juan Hernandez? [Update: I'm having trouble getting the McCain clip to play. If you are too, click here and then click the little McCain thumbnail in the right sidebar. That seems to solve the problem.]
Skip the McCain clip if you’re short on time and watch these two of his lackeys carrying his water for him. Hannity does to Graham exactly what Russert should have done to Maverick, but understandably gives up when the stonewalling becomes too painful and pathetic to watch. This doesn’t even qualify as spin, any more than “I know you are but what am I?” would.
And here’s the stalking horse, clinging to life so that he can perform one last “good” deed by kneecapping Romney on Super Tuesday. You’ve never heard McCain be dishonest, Huck? Consult with your immigration guru on that.
Exit question: Remember Romney’s heavy-handed hints last year about pulling out and heading home in defeat if the benchmarks he proposed weren’t met? No? That’s because it wasn’t Romney.
U.S. Sen. John McCain, a Republican from Arizona, said on Saturday he was preparing a resolution setting a series of targets for the Iraqi government as a “last chance” effort to reverse U.S. failure…
“I cannot guarantee success but I can guarantee the consequences of failure,” said McCain, an outspoken member of the Senate Armed Services Committee who supports President George W. Bush’s plan to sent 21,500 troops to Iraq. “This is our last chance in many respects.”…
It would take three to six months after the deployment of the new troops, which is possible in May, to know whether the Iraqi government was making progress in meeting the benchmarks, McCain said.
“It’s taken us four years to get into this debacle and it’s going to take some time to get us out,” he said.

I’m so sick of you always coming in here to get your little jabs in at Christians and trying to discredit Christianity and personally insulting me.
I know you claim that God is not a loving God but is only a vengeful and cruel God…but it is not true!
But do understand that when you claim that Christ is not God and is a just a man and say I shouldn’t follow Christ..understand that you are speaking the antiChrist spirit…
It is demonic!
If you reject Christ you WILL go to Hell!
Hell is worse than the the worst thing you can imagine and no one should go there!
No more anti-Christian demonic bigotry from you please.. it is very offensive to me and many others I’m sure!

You’re exactly right about romney.. he was for a secret withdrawal plan because it was popular at the time.
Now he is running from those same statements that he would of turned around and used to his advantage had the surge turned south.
Romney has no convictions ZERO..ZILCH!
There goes Romney again…blowing in the wind!

When someone (like me!) mentions The Rough Riders how many Huckabee supporters would immediately think you were referring to the lyrics to DMZ’s Ruff Riders (***Warning! Vulgar, violent, and racist lyrics***)
Here’s where he did it, and it was exactly 2 minutes after I posted a comment which he had to read and then reply to, so this was not the result of a Google Search.
Let me guess! He’s familiar with this garbage because he volunteers for his church to help out inner- city youth.

I welcome the fact that there is more breadth of opinion now, and I cannot support complaints about that because, for one thing, that could rightly be construed as intimidating.
It is one thing to object to a few particular obnoxious commenters and to take them on directly, but to complain that the presence of new voices is objectionable and thus make them feel unwelcome is in itself objectionable.
Buy Danish on January 27, 2008 at 8:28 PM
For one thing, unless you have any evidence of this claim (which you don’t because it’d be all over), this basically you just saying “I don’t like Romney, but I can’t make an articulate case against him so I’ll just make up something about t3h Hilldebeast and her wife liking him. That’ll show ‘em!!!”
Even if it was true, people should vote for the candidate who they believe will lead the country in a manner most consistent with their political beliefs.

For one, I’d stand up and walk right on out the door, secondly - why has their tax exempt status not been questioned? This applies to all the candidates, no matter whether Repub or Dem.

Carter 2.0 lures you in with the freeware vibe, but then it asks you to register for a fee before it naturally hijacks your entire OS. It erases most music from your HD and then it corrupts all your .jpegs . Be careful because it could take four years to reboot the system. Most HD’s infected require a clean sweep and format. I recommend removing and burning the HD.

Hey,am I on the correct string? I thought this was about Romney, and all of a sudden a religious war breaks out! Cool it, champions of faith!
Romney is doing great-if he weren’t, none of the others would be attacking him. Watching him answer questions during the debate the other night, I had a feeling that the others-Guliani, Huck and McCain-all knew that they were listening to the next President of the United States.
And so the attacks heat up. I mentioned in church tonight that I found it troubling for a Baptist minister(Huckabee) to be dumping on anyone-we’re not supposed to smear, or bear false witness, no matter what is at stake.
Be cool, brothers and sisters-there’s a lot of election yet to happen.
Doug on January 27, 2008 at 9:20 PM
What in blue blazes is this guy talking about? Harald, you’re really embarrassing yourself. What race of people have I somehow offended? I suggest you go back and read the thread you appear to be misquoting.
In any case, to address your very logical concerns…
1) If Huckabee, McCain or Romney are nominated by the GOP I’ll be voting for Obama. I’ve provided a strong rationale for that stance which I’d be happy to repeat for you if necessary.
2) I’m no liberal. I have lived amongst them my entire life, though, giving me a unique understanding of the Social-Progressive agenda.
3) I’m no National Socialist. I think socialism is an empty ideology and I’ve no use for Identity Politics whatsoever.
I think that covers all your talking points.
You seem to dislike that I point out your faux-christianity for all to see. You also seem to dislike that I show no passion for Israel. Well, that’s because I have a very firm opposition to any nation founded on a single religious identity. I come from a long line of Jews and have been educated thoroughly in Judaica. I’m just not a zionist. So sue me.

“Who will redeem the earth, who will go forth and make the sacrifice for the earth and all things it contains?” The Eldest Son said: “Here am I”; and then he added, “Send me.” “But the second one, which was “Lucifer, Son of the Morning,” said, “Lord, here am I, send me, I will redeem every son and daughter of Adam and Eve that lives on the earth, or that ever goes on the earth.” -Brigham Young
“In the wilderness of Judaea, on the temple’s pinnacles and on the high mountain, a momentous contest took place between two brothers, Jehovah and Lucifer, sons of Elohim.”

But alas, Fred was rejected by the establishment. Not that Fred’s campaign was without faults, if I were Fred I would kick his campaign manager right in the numbers. Fred got a WHOLE lot of bad advice. In hindsight I pinpoint the July 4th debacle as the beginning and end of Fred being competitive.
With that being said, the next viable candidate for me is Mitt. I just wish the MSM would stay objective, but that will never happen, the elites feel they know better and try to sway opinion to be inline with theirs.
The real question that I wrestling with, as are many others I’m sure, is what do I do if the nominee is McCain? I am not worried about Huckabee. If the GOP establishment taps McCain will it destroy the GOP? Forever divided between the conservative base and the so called Maverick base.

That’s completely beside the point. There are more wicked things at work here than horking and hammering.

I think the GOP will be destroyed if either McCain, Romney or Huckabee win the nomination. All three stand to truly disenfranchise a big cross-section of the party. I’ll be re-registering as an Independent after CA’s Feb. 5 primary — I’ll be voting for Fred! since he’ll still be on the ballot — and praying that more passionate folks than I are willing to start a new party.
The New Conservatives: coming to a ballot near you!

I don’t see the GOP being destroyed by a Romney nomination. Huckabee, sure, McCain maybe, but Romney’s platform holds mostly true. If people want to affect direction within the party, the best thing to do is to get involved. At a minimum be active in the primaries and the generals. Don’t let these knuckleheads get away with stuff.

Although we tend to agree on many topics - I have a couple of questions here.
Pray tell, which “cross-section” of the Republican Party will not voting for McCain disenfranchise?
The grouchy lying sick RINO septagenarian wing? Or the piss-on-the-constitution wing, if not the let’s get the Gitmo slimeballs onto our contiguous territory and supply them with all the rights of Americans wing?
And why vote for someone who so totally botched his campaign like Thompson? Like a million other conservatives, I sent him money and supported him and just watched him piss it all away.. He could have buried McCain for good, but blew a critical opportunity. There’s an important reason we have Presidential campaigns - they tend to foretell the management qualities of a potential Chief Executive.
So it’s down to Romney.
And as for Schmuckabee - we’ve already have sent one sleazy POS from Hope, Arkansas to the White House. Thanks but no thanks.. that place must be like that old leper colony down in Louisiana - crawling with some kind of spirochetes.

Keep talking your brother down from the ledge. The MSM is enjoying watching us cannibalize each other. It makes it easier for their stooge to get through. Let’s try the enemy of my enemy stuff, if it will help. The only guy that truly makes this a deal breaker is Huckabee.
I went through this same idiocy with CA when Gray Davis got the boot. Everyone thought it was cool to vote for Arnold. Even with the threat of Bustamante, I voted for McClintock, who I thought would be the stronger conservative. Huck, for some reason, reminds me of Arnold. It’s that same populism that gets me.

It’s hard to disagree with this sentiment. I’ve been registered since 2006, and I have never seen such an argumentative, name-calling bunch of new commenters. Mrs. Malkin, Bryan, AP, etc., spend their days posting these stories, running down leads, and providing us with provocative and interesting analysis. I have a hard time believing they enjoy seeing this kind of response to their hard work.
You guys can do better. If you can’t, you should think about what your purpose is in commenting here at all.
And that’s my humble opinion.

Um, are there any moderators at all, or is just free for all from now on?

I started to write out a long diatribe about which parts of the party hate each particular candidate, but it turned out to be very difficult to follow. I’ll answer your question simply by saying that each of the three candidates has a significant number of people within the GOP who think they are unfit to lead.
Because I liked how Fred! ran his campaign. He was offered his services as a leader; he wasn’t whoring himself out to the party. He didn’t look like a baby-kissing, glad-handing power-seeking jabroni. He just ran on the issues. What makes me very depressed is that so few people saw this for what it was: integrity. Instead we had pundits like AP playing up that oh-so-stupid “fire in the belly” mantra.
I never wanted a politician with “fire in the belly.” In fact, those kinda guys scare me. I want someone who reluctantly seeks power and sticks to what they know best. I may not agree with all the decisions they’ve made in life, but at least you have a good idea about why they made them.
I have serious doubts about his Health Insurance plan. I think far too many Republicans are buying into this idea that Insurance is somehow part of governmental responsibility. The business he pulled in Massachusetts worries me greatly, as does his understanding of the Illegal Immigration issue. I think he is willing to buy into the “Secure the borders first” agenda, but where is he going from there? Lots of questions linger.
Indeed. Huckabee is the biggest danger to the GOP of all. He just turns people off left and right with his disingenuous remarks. He is just a Pro-Life, Pro-Gun Democrat and it’s sad to see so many good people be otherwise taken in by his bible thumping.

No doubt the administrators won’t like it if the trend of the last ten days continues.

Will you elaborate?

Well, at least the Republicans are in the middle of an ideological debate, albeit with personal overtones and a little dysfunction (like this thread).
Compare that with the insanity going on in the Democrat column. Unless Hillary and Obama do a major Kumbaya, that race looks pretty nasty.
Of course, it could simply be part of a Clintonian triangulation shtick, but I really think that the Dems are getting weary of the entire Clinton circus.
Obama was simply made by the Almighty to be a Democrat VP choice, and Rush’s old prediction may turn out to be true.

You vile gibot. You give us real Christians a bad name. Why don’t you just go back to your giboted church and hate on some more folks who refuse to believe as you do?

Perhaps he has shared my occasional thought that HH’s real identity is Dean Steacy or someone similar.
