Video: McCain, Graham, Huckabee continue to smear Romney on Iraq

I posted part of the old GMA interview in yesterday’s item on this but the video doesn’t have the full quote. Let’s remedy that now:
QUESTION: Iraq. John McCain is there in Baghdad right now. You have also been very vocal in supporting the president and the troop surge. Yet, the American public has lost faith in this war. Do you believe that there should be a timetable in withdrawing the troops?
MR. ROMNEY: Well, there’s no question but that — the president and Prime Minister al-Maliki have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about. But those shouldn’t be for public pronouncement. You don’t want the enemy to understand how long they have to wait in the weeds until you’re going to be gone. You want to have a series of things you want to see accomplished in terms of the strength of the Iraqi military and the Iraqi police, and the leadership of the Iraqi government.
QUESTION: So, private. You wouldn’t do it publicly? Because the president has said flat out that he will veto anything the Congress passes about a timetable for troop withdrawals. As president, would you do the same?
MR. ROMNEY: Well, of course. Can you imagine a setting where during the Second World War we said to the Germans, gee, if we haven’t reached the Rhine by this date, why, we’ll go home, or if we haven’t gotten this accomplished we’ll pull up and leave? You don’t publish that to your enemy, or they just simply lie in wait until that time. So, of course, you have to work together to create timetables and milestones, but you don’t do that with the opposition.
The whole point of this line of attack is to lump Romney in with the Democrats as quitters; the fact that he’s vowing here to veto any Democratic timetables puts the lie to it. Question for Maverick, then: What’s the problem with Bush and Maliki making up a schedule of things they’d like to see happen by certain dates, provided that a missed deadline doesn’t automatically trigger withdrawal? The objection to Democratic-style “tripwire” timetables is that they contemplate pulling out before our goals are achieved. Nowhere does Romney recommend that. He does allude to eventual withdrawal, but so what? Unless McCain’s suggesting that we should stay in Iraq forever even if we’re not needed, as some sort of lobotomized test of resolve, then what’s the harm in looking ahead to getting out? Accomplish the mission, then leave. Wake me when Romney says something that omits the first part of that statement.
Three clips for you, then. First and most boringly, McCain himself repeating this bogus charge on MTP this morning, replete with impressive index card. Does crack interviewer Tim Russert press him on a transparent distortion of Romney’s argument? Did he press him about Juan Hernandez? [Update: I'm having trouble getting the McCain clip to play. If you are too, click here and then click the little McCain thumbnail in the right sidebar. That seems to solve the problem.]
And here’s the stalking horse, clinging to life so that he can perform one last “good” deed by kneecapping Romney on Super Tuesday. You’ve never heard McCain be dishonest, Huck? Consult with your immigration guru on that.
Exit question: Remember Romney’s heavy-handed hints last year about pulling out and heading home in defeat if the benchmarks he proposed weren’t met? No? That’s because it wasn’t Romney.

“I cannot guarantee success but I can guarantee the consequences of failure,” said McCain, an outspoken member of the Senate Armed Services Committee who supports President George W. Bush’s plan to sent 21,500 troops to Iraq. “This is our last chance in many respects.”…
It would take three to six months after the deployment of the new troops, which is possible in May, to know whether the Iraqi government was making progress in meeting the benchmarks, McCain said.
“It’s taken us four years to get into this debacle and it’s going to take some time to get us out,” he said.

What we’re dealing with here is McCainabee logic. Once you get caught with reasoned scrutiny, you devolve into distortion and demagoguery. McCain and Huckabee, and apparently many of their adherents, embrace school yard tactics to distract from their lack of depth and understanding.

How do we convince our friends, the “electibility” Republicans to vote for someone besides McCain? (in my humble opinion, Romney) As Rush says, we need to get back to our conservative roots and take this thing!!! Any ideas of how to talk to friends who are otherwise convinced that McCain is the only way to keep Hillary out of the White House are welcome. In my opinion, McCain is a ticket into the White House for Hillary.

Stick to principles. Stick to reasoned debate. If we cover glaring weaknesses with emotion, and then compound it with dissembling, we get McCain. Emotion wears off, then your left with the mistake you made. Building on fundamentals and a principled foundation will appeal to more people. Wow, I actually just watched the video of what Huckmania said after reading them earlier. He was pretty convincing. He looked straight at a crowd of 2,000 with reporters everywhere and with conviction said he had seen the documentation and gave the details and everything. I think that McCain and the other “Immigration Reform” supporters in the Republican party are making the same type of political calculation in re the conservative base that the Clintons are with the African American vote.
Both look at the growing numbers of Hispanics in our country and have fixated on plucking that prime political plum. They also feel fairly confident that neither the black nor the conservative vote are likely to decamp to the other side.
They have decided that the numbers to be gleaned from Hispanic support are worth depressing turn out from blacks and conservatives.

That is valid sentiment. McCain recognizes potential voters. Pins to this theory include his advisers, his endorsers, and the bills he’s sponsored. The difference is the media is giving him a pass, while some in the media are beating Bill and Hillary.

Deety, I think you are right. I don’t think the Clintons were expecting to lose as badly as they did though. Obama recognizes it too, and I must say in that light, I though his speech last night was brilliant.
As the Hispanic vote, I think you are absolutely right. Especially after what we say in Nevada. I don’t know if it was a test balloon or now, but since California is so similar in makeup, I can’t imagine they wouldn’t continue to push that divide until at least Super Tuesday.

Works for me … I’m an independent now. Have been since the GOP leadership and congress betrayed conservatism and stopped believing in small government. I vote for the candidate whose views most closely resemble mine (within reason). And I don’t want to go back to the 80’s either. I could never stand big-hair metal bands.
Not a big issue for me. He could drink aborted fetus smoothies every morning for all I care. I also don’t care if someone changes their mind, as long as they have a good reason for it. I’ve changed my positions on things plenty of times as I’ve gotten older and wiser.

Actually, I’d be more afraid of a leader who was dogmatically inflexible in their specific beliefs and unable to adapt to changing conditions than someone who has undergone serious soul-searching and taken the grief for admitting they were wrong. That’s not to endorse going whichever way the wind blows, but a simple realization that nobody starts out being right 100% of the time.

I think the simplest explanation is likely the right one. Harald came along with a few other notable Schmuckabee trolls — apacalyps & popularpolitics, for instance — and immediately began stirring up trouble. They bashed mormons, bashed Fred! and showed the real face of Christian tolerance.
I honestly think he is a Huckabee supporter and likely being paid to pimp him out on HotAir.

I’d respectfully disagree… given the sHuckster’s M.O. of being Mr. Christian out of one side of his mouth while sliming his opponents out of the other, I’d say HaraldHardrada fits his campaign to a “T” (see my 5:53 post on the subject).
