The straight-talking senator was asked about his Hispanic Outreach Director, Dr. Juan Hernandez, at a campaign event in Florida Sunday. Here’s video of his reaction.
QUESTION: Senator McCain, I thank you so much for your service … as an Irish … my parents and my grandparents both came here to become immigrants … I so much want to vote for you, I have one concern … your straight talk … it is you have an outreach - Hispanic outreach person - on your staff, Juan Hernandez, and he has said that he understands why Social Security numbers are stolen … because we don’t allow the immigrants to get their own, so it’s ok for him that we steal other Americans’ Social Security numbers. He also has written a book called “The New American Pioneers” about comparing illegal immigrants, not legal immigrants, to become the “New Pioneers”… I wonder if you agree with his policy? If so, explain it to me and if not why is he on your staff?
SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN: He’s on my staff because he supports my policies and my proposals and my legislative proposal to secure the borders first. No one will receive social security benefits who is in this country illegally. I don’t know what his previous positions are or other positions are, he supports mine. I have nothing to do with his. He has volunteered to help me with outreach to our Hispanic citizenry as I outreach to every citizen in America. I’ve been very clear on my position on immigration; I’ve been very clear on my position on Social Security. Of course I am grateful that so many people came from Ireland to the United States of American and anybody else who come here legally and that’s the only system I will ever support. I have no idea but I will check in to the information you’ve given me. I promise you, I will secure our borders, I will not allow anyone to come here illegally, I will not allow anyone to receive Social Security or any other benefits because they have come here illegally and broken our laws.
Dr. Hernandez is on the record, on his own web site no less, favoring the free flow of people between the United States and Mexico. The following quote is set off in large red letters on Hernandez’s web site.
We must not only have a free flow of goods and services, but also start working for a free flow of people.
Hernandez is also on the record advocating a “Mexico first” policy for Mexican-Americans who have been living in the US for generations. The Soros-connected former Mexican cabinet officer is also on the record as seeing the US, Mexico and Canada as a bloc or region within which there shouldn’t be borders. Unless those policies sync with McCain’s, Hernandez does not agree with McCain’s policies. He might be on the senator’s staff for some other reason, but policy agreement isn’t it. Unless, of course, McCain agrees with Hernandez’s policies. And if that’s the case, the voters ought to know about it.
In the clip, Senator McCain says he doesn’t know much about Dr. Hernandez’s positions. This should get Senator McCain up to speed.
Update: Michelle received an email from the woman who confronted McCain.

He is on his staff; you sleep with dogs, you get fleas. Is any one in Florida paying attention? I think so after seeing the Rasmussen poll. You know what you are getting ahead of time, because he make no effort to hide anything.

What is wrong with a free flow of people? They have done that in Europe and it’s great (plus really practical). Is everybody here fundamentaly against free flow of people or only in the current situation where Mexico is so much poorer than the US (or some other reason)?

CrimsonFisted on January 27, 2008 at 6:20 PM
has there ever been any other situation? What makes you only mention Mexico? Why would a free country want to be anything close to a EU model?

I’m a bit concerned that McVain hasn’t researched more of Dr. Juan’s background. McCain now scares me significantly enough (on several levels, but immigration primarily), that I’m headed to Romney. Unless there’s a Fred! second coming. *sniff*

If you want to make that argument to change the court of public opinion, fine. But it has NO RELEVANCE here. McCain is a representative and should represent the interests of his constituency. He fails this most simple litmus test.

I will not allow anyone to receive Social Security or any other benefits because they have come here illegally and broken our laws. –John McCain
‘Straight Talk’ Express Takes Scenic Route to Truth
In 2003, McCain told The Tucson Citizen that “amnesty has to be an important part” of any immigration reform. He also rolled out the old chestnut about America’s need for illegals, who do “jobs that American workers simply won’t do.”
McCain’s amnesty bill would have immediately granted millions of newly legalized immigrants Social Security benefits. He even supported allowing work performed as an illegal to count toward Social Security benefits as recently as a vote in 2006 — now adamantly denied by Mr. Straight Talk.

I disagree. McCain, in running for President, is looking for a constituency among people who may or may not have voted for him before. He seems to have found one, even if many on this board might not like it.
Big S on January 27, 2008 at 6:54 PM
All this ’straight talk’ about ’securing the borders first’ needs to be addressed.
If ’securing the borders’ comes first, Senator McCain, what comes second?

What a great clip on Juan Hernandez. This needs to be condense into a quick Romeny ad in Florida. The U.S. is finished if McCain becomes the Republican nominee as both Obama and Clinton are also open borders advocates.
What a disgrace that Crist endorsed McCain. It was no surprise that open-borders Mel Martinez earlier endorsed McCain, although it says volumes about his disloyalty to Guiliani who has always supported him. I believe that both his and the St. Petersburg leftist newpaper’s endorsement of McCain was not helpful to him, but am worried about Crist’s endorsement.

TroubledMonkey on January 27, 2008 at 7:19 PM
I hope someone puts that in the lock box. So is he saying even if the 12-25 million are granted amnesty, they will not be getting benefits? They did break the law, and they did come here illegally.
But then again, McCain is a flat out liar and it really doesnt matter what he says or when he said it.

How has Europe benefited from importing a treasonous welfare class from muslim countries? How is paying more in welfare great for the Europeans? How is having savage immigrants kill people for offending Islam great for Europe? How is having the immigrants they’ve permitted into their countries exterminating European cultures great for Europe? Great job Bryan and Michelle. And thanks to Joan, the patriot who asked the question.
I wonder if Mitt Romney will pick up on this and drive it home? How about Fred?
McCain’s lust for power has blinded him. If he wins the nomination he will totally destroy the Republican Party. Maybe that’s why the media and the Klinton’s love him so.
Zorro on January 27, 2008 at 8:07 PM
I don’t really thinks that this would really drive all that many more voters into his camp. If amnesty is already a strong reason for people to reject McCain this just reinforces their objection.
Placing too much of an emphasis on it however, would help those who are so inclined to continue to paint the conservative wing of the party as nativist and anti-immigration. Not fair or accurate but ‘dems da breaks’.
I would think that a more salient point to be made in influencing possible McCain voters would be his absolutely disgraceful demagoguery of the war in Iraq a la the Democrats.
In response to Romney demanding an apology for his false surrender charges this weekend McCain said “I think the apology is owed to the young men and women serving this nation in uniform, that we will not let them down in hard times or good. That is who the apology is owed to”.
Reminds me of Reid and Rush not too long ago.

In Mexico, as in all Latin America, the elites are pure white Spanish who disdain their little brown countrymen of Indian origin and do nothing to better their lives. Keeping the Indians under control is difficult as witnessed by the troubles in Chiapas. From the perspective of the Mexican elites, shipping their brown breathern to the US helps solve not only Mexico’s economic problems, but also ameliorates their social divisions. You just don’t see too many white Mexican’s sneaking across the border.

I don’t care if it were French Canadians sneaking down from the north, Chinese coming in on rusted-out tankers and beaching on the West coast, second-generation Russians fleeing Cuba on ultra-lights, or Kenyans drifting up on inner-tubes at Conesy Island, -the borders need to be controlled of all illegals or we have no country, and no flag.
Just a dirty, tattered Welcome mat for thieves, scofflaws and invaders.

-Mycowardice
Mycoward, I was seriously hoping you were being sarcastic but I didn’t see any evidence of that. This has got to be the most damning evidence yet that our education system has failed miserably in teaching what America is all about. First of all, there is not really a free flow of people, it is an IN-flow of people. Nobody’s leaving. Second, it is not working out so great in Europe. To say that it does means to me that you just plain have no idea what you are talking about. Most of the European countries that have had a tsunami of poor immigrants are just now realizing what a mistake that has been and are starting to fight back. You need to go to YouTube and search out a nine and a half minute long video by Roy Beck called, “Immigration Gumballs” and you will see what the problem is. One of the reasons this country became great to begin with was the rule of law and order. Sure, we started out rough, but as we became more human rights oriented, abolished slavery and child labor, we became more prosperous and raised the quality of life for the poorest in the country to a level much higher than most people in the world. If we just allowed anybody who could scittle across the border to stay here and collect the benefits that our ancestors have worked to build up over many years, America will become an overpopulated welfare wasteland in just a few short years. It is already happening in some cities of the southwest that are totally overrun with Mexicans.
Look at California with a 14 billion dollar deficit! Coincidentally, there have been many estimates that that same figure is about what we spend on illegals every year in healthcare, education, welfare and many other social services.

Yes, I have heard this fact from my California friends also.
Which raises a different point.
Not only is McCain, Graham-Amnesty of SC, Lugar of Indiana and others joining the Democrat Party in rewarding lawlessness with the gift of USA citizenship, but they are also
asking usforcing us to pay for all their health care too. There is no free lunch in economics, and this applies to health care as well. Somebody (USA citizens) is paying for all this free health care.
ColtsFan on January 27, 2008 at 11:38 PM
Simple question for McCain and the rest of the amensty crowd.
If you support free immigration and free unrestricted trade than you must also support the reimportation of drugs from Canada. It is simple logic. If it is good for the country to import cheap, unskilled labor than it must also be good for the country to import cheaper drugs. This is where Bush/McCain et all lost me. Their positions on the two subjects are totally different. The only reason you would support immigration and not the importation of Canada drugs is because one benefits the Ceo’s and the other doesn’t.
Now I’m all for free markets but if the government is going to step in and protect one industry then they must also protect all the other industries in the country. If free trade in cars/people/toys is good for the country than free trade in medicine must also be good. When the Blue Blood Reps start putting the entire nation first again instead of select industries/ captains of industries then they will once again have my full support. Until that time I will much like they do selectivly support the canidates that benefit my country, my family, and myself.

Any more questions?

I understand the concerns about the economy or the impact free flow can have on society. Obviously, if we just opened the borders tomorrow, it would be a disaster.
It seems to me, in this debate, this problem/risk merges with a potential goal. When Mr. Hernandez gets hammered for his proposals, some of them get shot down as if they have no merit whatsover. This is my question lies.
For Europe, you can read on the Schengen agreement on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement . I didn’t talk about ‘welfare class from muslim countries’. I referred to the free flow of people throughout (some countries) in Europe. If you have travelled in continental Europe recently, you have experienced the Schengen agreement when you crossed from France to Italy or Germany. You basically don’t have border crossings. By the way, you can be in the UE without having signed that agreement. Notable holdout: UK.
So for example, if the same ‘free flow’ of people was suggested with Canada, would it be the same problem?
Anyways, I realize this is a very sensitive issue, but I think some of the ideas proposed here merit further thought if we want to stay competitive in an ever changing world. Mexico is bound to stay our neighbor for a while, so I think just building a fence is not a good long term solution.
mycowardice on January 28, 2008 at 12:08 AM
mycowardice on January 28, 2008 at 12:08 AM
since your neighbors will be around for some time. I guess there is no reason for you to have locks on your doors, or even doors at all. I mean there is no bad people out there that want to steal what you have is there?
It all depends if you care what laws and regulations you want to live under. If you want no borders then the collective will of the world determines what is right/wrong for you and your family. borders gives countries the ability to decide its own laws. It’s going wages, it culture, it’s way of life. It allows them to protect their resources, their citizens property, their childrens education. it allows its citizens to invest and build a future without fear of it being taken away by outside forces without a defense.

I understand the concerns about the economy or the impact free flow can have on society. Obviously, if we just opened the borders tomorrow, it would be a disaster.
No, I don’t think you get it yet coward, IT ALREADY IS A DISASTER!!!! Our economy in Cali is the eighth largest in the WORLD, and we are being bankrupted by paying for services for people who pay virtually nothing in taxes and then getting pushed out of old neighborhoods which have turned into bullet ridden barrios! And then you stand there there and say, “I understand the concerns about the economy or the impact free flow can have on society. Obviously, if we just opened the borders tomorrow, it would be a disaster.”
And CANADA??? Coward, There are more people in California than there are in the whole of Canada by about three million! You obviously don’t have a tiny hint of the scale we’re talking about here. We have approximately half or more of the population of Canada here just in illegals.
If you went away for a two week vacation and came back and there was a family living in your house, broke the lock and just walked in, would you tell them to leave? If they said, look there were some dirty dishes so we washed them, the least you could do is go buy some groceries. Would you? If they told you there were more of them than of you so get the hell out, would you? Because that is exactly what is happening here. You people who don’t live right in the heart of this mess make me mad as all hell! Your apathy is sticking the rest of the country with a financial and criminal burden that is changing the face of our country into a third world overnight and you JACKASSES are still singing Kumbaya. I guess with some people, it just has to come to blood in the streets before they realize there is a problem.

I think this article is relevant to your point. I was very troubled by this article as well.
Things have gotten out of control in LA.
My personal conviction is that the root of all of this violence and gang warfare lies in anarchy and lawlessness.
And it troubles me when USA politicians provide “incentives” that only perpetuate an endless cycle of more violence, more mayhem, more crime…

Good articles coltsfan. You hit the nail on the head with a sledgehammer with anarchy and lawlessness. If a criminal comes across the border and commits a crime, he pretty much has a free ticket out of having a criminal record. All he does is give a fake name. They often carry no ID at all. Then when the police run a check, they get nothing. Once you get used to living like this, there is no way in hell you can see an advantage to ever being legal. Especially if you’re a career criminal or gang member. So what we get is a lot of crime, and criminals running back across the border till things cool down. Then we have an awful lot of hit and runs, DUI illegals, no registration or insurance and they take off. But the overwhelming problem is that they don’t have the least bit of respect for law. And they bring that with them from Mexico which is the homeland of anarchy and lawlessness. Have you been reading anything about Mexico lately? I live 15 minutes from there in San Diego. Gang violence is up 25% in the last year. I am fed the **** up with people being tolerant of crime they don’t have to suffer with!!!!

If Juan Hernandez McCain wins the nomination I’m out. I can’t take it anymore. This is not the party I grew to love. How the hell can so many Republicans in Florida be voting for this despicable waste of space? Is there some chemical causing retardation in the water? If McCain or Huck wins the nomination I say it’s time we send a strong message to Republican “leaders” everywhere and leave the party.

Thank you for your comment.
What upsets me is that the very same people (John McCain, Graham-Amnesty of SC, Richard Lugar of Indiana, etc) pushing Amnesty are the same type of people who intentionally chose to move away to a different zip code once lawlessness erupts in an area.
I believe there is some truth to “Balkanization” occuring in the future. But I do think
the “South African-ization” of America is already occurring in that USA politicians are passing laws that encourage lawlessness and anarchy for the rest of us while they are receiving bribes from businesses in their upper end zip codes.

“We’re all family”? We don’t run off our poor family members to Canada because we won’t share the wealth. What does Mexico do with all the money for all the oil we buy from them? They’re ethnically cleansing the country of the descendents of the Aztecs and Mayans so the descendents of the Sapinish-European descendents can keep PEMEX’s oil revenue.
