Video: Huckabee’s new, and probably last, campaign ad
posted at 1:13 pm on January 26, 2008 by Allahpundit
So hard up for cash is he that he can’t afford to run this on Florida broadcast stations, even though a state with no income tax is an easy mark for this line of argument. Ah well. You’ll find no Christian iconography here, needless to say; South Carolina proved that his base isn’t big enough to push him through, even in a three- or four-man race. So here’s a last-gasp bid to broaden his support by emphasizing the more secular conservative aspects of his platform, of a piece with publicly signing that “no amnesty” pledge that no one really trusts him to abide by.
Now that I no longer have to worry about being governed by him, I’m curious to see what his next move is. Any ideas? Maverick won’t tempt fate with a RINOmania ticket by making him VP but Huck’s made too many friends within the media to disappear entirely. And being as young as he is, he’s surely already thinking about 2012 with a proper organization behind him. What does he do until then to bide his time?
Exit question: Just how crazy was Huck’s tax plan? Crazy crazy? Or crazy like a fox?
Update: Says the man who pulled the Romney attack ad stunt and has spent the last two months demagoguing identity politics in various subtle and not so subtle ways, “Those guys [the Democrats] ought to be nice like us.”

Time to pack it up and go home, Huck. This race is now between McCain and Romney. May the best Mormon win.
AbaddonsReign on January 26, 2008 at 1:33 PM
we could be looking at the GOP side being McCain vs. Romney with Paul never dropping out after next week.
jp on January 26, 2008 at 1:34 PM
Out with a whimper.
Vizzini on January 26, 2008 at 1:35 PM
I hope he is finished officially soon. He is one thing the GOP does NOT need now, him and his Ronulan IRS thing (would be nice, but get real please) and his sharia-like amending the Constitution.
Once he’s gone, I won’t have to worry about him winning here in MO.
JamesLee on January 26, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Romo’s looking for a new girlfriend.
fogw on January 26, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Well, he can always go back to the religion/speech-making on Mormonism (remember, that’s what he did in SLC in 1998). As I recall, he was pulling in 5 figures for speeches to churches.
Come to think of it, he’s practically a televangelist. Why not go whole hog?
Vanceone on January 26, 2008 at 1:41 PM
I agree that the Fair Tax is a brilliant concept. Among other things, I’d like nothing more than for big spending drug cartel dudes, illegal aliens, and the like to pay their fair share of taxes. I’d love to see the end of the class warfare perpetuating Progressive Income Tax. I’d love to see the end of the IRS.
Huck didn’t invent it though, so the idea will just have to hobble on without him.
Buy Danish on January 26, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Hey, AP; back on the (related) subject of you getting abused on long atheist v Christian threads, what about all the anti-Huckster Christian conservative posts here. Can’t those be viewed as bones thrown your way?
A little “glass is half full”, please…

Good riddance, Huckster. I just wish he’d take his good friend Juan McCain with him when he goes.
AZCoyote on January 26, 2008 at 1:50 PM
“Abolish the IRS.”
That’s the first sensible thing I’ve heard him say.
Too little, too late. Not probable from the executive anyways.
Severe grassroots ground work needs to occur before the sheeple wake up, whittle away at things like withholding, SS, and earmarks before anything like abolishing the IRS will occur. And even then, only from congressional action or constitutional amendment.

Good one. Did you see the comments under that video? One says he should have instituted a buffet tax ’cause he was pretty hefty back then.
txsurveyor on January 26, 2008 at 2:10 PM
I LIKE Mike’s Conservative Christian views on social issues. Too bad he’s too liberal on illegal immigration and spending.
I like the Fair Tax, or Flat Tax, and/or similar ideas. I know Romney’s for less taxes, but would he consider something more radical like the ‘Fair Tax’?
After wrestling for months I’m gonna back Romney. I think.
Ordinary1 on January 26, 2008 at 2:10 PM
It’s kinda sad seeing him pull out one of his few redeeming qualities at the last minute. He might have done better campaigning as an actual conservative and hiding his wacky bits (which would have been duly drug out during the general, resulting in a landslide – Reaganesque, even! – Obama win.
And what’s up with NR attacking the Fair Tax and *Slate* of all places praising it? Wacky world we live in these days.
Hannibal Smith on January 26, 2008 at 2:10 PM
I expect Huck will take a cue from Hillary and have a televised cry in the next few days.
windansea on January 26, 2008 at 2:12 PM
The only thing that Huckster has never explained is how he is going to get a Democrat Congress that is vehemently opposed to the fair tax to go along with it.
It’s only a small detail of course.
joncoltonis on January 26, 2008 at 2:16 PM
His next move? It should be to drop out, and save the Republican party anymore embarassment.
therightwinger on January 26, 2008 at 2:17 PM
I don’t think he was referring to the HLA, which social cons everywhere support, but of his rather dangerous suggestion that he would alter the Constitution to reflect Chrsitian values.
Now I’m all for Christian values, but 1: Huck’s idea of Christian values and mine are completely different (he’s a Nanny Stater Government = Charity type) and 2: The Constitution should not explicitly promote one religion.
BKennedy on January 26, 2008 at 2:18 PM
What do you mean, ‘no Christian iconography’? I’m pretty sure I saw a cross at the five second mark. Could just be my imagination though.
Kevin M on January 26, 2008 at 2:20 PM
That is correct. And I agree, BK, that I have no problem with Christian values, considering myself a Christian after all. The problem begins with who gets to define those values, seeing as how many different ideas are out there as to just what those values might actually be. What works for one may be unacceptable to another.

Except the Huckanuts, who’re sleeping in today, apparently.
While the “fair tax”, which as Buy Danish said, he didn’t invent, sounds good, he, or any president couldn’t do a thing about. The Congress, whichever side is in power, will never give up the trough from which they feed themselves, and their sheeple.
TheSitRep on January 26, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Good example to two bloated things: the speaker, and the taxes. Thanks for reminding us, lest anyone take him seriously.
Entelechy on January 26, 2008 at 2:51 PM
Hrmm…a story trying to bury Huck and yet no mention of Romney’s “I don’t care about the voters” gaff.
Not that I’m a Huck supporter but the bias around here is getting pretty thick lately.
Benaiah on January 26, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Out of idle curiosity … who? Which one?
We’re now left with Giuliani, McCain, and Romney.
And you call just one of them a RINO? While the other two (whichever those may be) are rock-solid conservative thinkers?
Seriously?
Professor Blather on January 26, 2008 at 2:55 PM
So Mike Huckabee now wants to be the guy that lays people (IRS) off? I wonder if he will have Mitt fire his campaign staff for him?

Spirit of 1776 on January 26, 2008 at 2:58 PM
Everyone Republican running is a RINO at this point. It’s just a matter of deciding which one is the least liberal at this point.
Or heck, voters could be really different and vote for a third party. Even Rush is tempted so it can’t be all bad right?
Benaiah on January 26, 2008 at 2:59 PM

medguy on January 26, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Depends who runs – so far, who’d be your favorite? None are mine, including those contemplating that ticket.
Entelechy on January 26, 2008 at 3:12 PM
James Lee opined:
Yeah. Defending the IRS. THAT’S the ticket to GOP success with those in their 20s. Really visionary of you! Trying to get the GOP to go the way of the Whigs, perhaps?
Getting rid of the IRS is not “Ronulan” in its origin. Do you think Paul made this up? It has been around a long time — and set forth by people who perhaps understand our economy a bit better than you?
Incidentally: The IRS was not envisioned by the Founders.
I do agree with you that we should be less inclined to resort to amending the Constitution, but your patent case of HDS (Huckabee Derangement Syndrome) is amusing. “Sharia-like,” indeed.
sanantonian on January 26, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Greenhorn commented:
Wow! So VERY visionary of you. “impossible to implement?” Why so?
sanantonian on January 26, 2008 at 3:15 PM
Or, do you mean: “may the best CFR-approved candidate win?”
sanantonian on January 26, 2008 at 3:16 PM
sanantonian, because you would have to repeal one amendment and add another. Its not happening and Hickabee knows it. A flat tax is just as visionary with much fewer hoops to jump through.
Greenhorn on January 26, 2008 at 3:46 PM
He’ll go back to Ar-kansas where he belongs. The people there actually LIKE him. They like his brand of government. They can have it! In a few weeks he’ll be forgotten.

He’s selling our defense systems to communist china now as we speak! Can you imagine Hilllary VS Romney….two candidates who will sell this country to china…which one should you pick?
Romney is also UNELECTABLE!

All the studies shows 20% of republicans at a MINIMUM will not vote vote for Romney under any circumstances!
I will not vote for Romney under any circumstances and I’m telling you that 20% is way underestimated I would say it is around 40-50% of republicans who won’t vote for him.
This is going to be a close election every vote will count…

Corrupt Huck
In Arkansas, Mr. Huckabee was investigated by the state ethics committee at least 14 times. Most of the complaints centered on what appears to be a serial disregard for government rules about gifts and outside financial compensation. He reported $112,000 worth of gifts in one year alone, nearly double his $67,000 salary.
Five of the 14 investigations resulted in admonishments: Two for failing to report gifts (one was later overturned), the other three for some $80,000 that Mr. Huckabee and his wife received but failed to initially report. One of these admonishments involved a $23,500 payment to Mr. Huckabee from an opaque organization called Action America that he helped found in 1994 while lieutenant governor, and that was designed to coordinate his speeches and supplement his income.
Mr. Huckabee caused an uproar when he used a $60,000 account intended to maintain the governor’s mansion for personal expenses, including restaurant meals, dry cleaning and boat supplies. He also faced a lawsuit over his assertion that $70,000 worth of furniture donated to the mansion was his to keep. Sprinkled among all this are complaints about the
misuse of state planes and campaign funds, mistakes on financial disclosure forms, and fights over documents related to ethics investigations.
Any one of these episodes individually may appear penny ante, but they add up to a disturbing pattern. People I’ve spoken with who worked with Mr. Huckabee in Arkansas dispute the idea that he is “corrupt.” They instead ascribe his ethical mishaps to a “blind spot” rooted in his beginnings as a Baptist minister and a Southern culture of gift-giving;
they suggest he never made the mental transition to public office.
Some will also argue Mr. Huckabee is no more ethically challenged than Mr. Giuliani, who is getting pounded with questions about Judith Nathan’s security detail and Giuliani Partner clients. The difference is that Hizzoner is a celebrity whose past bones were long ago picked clean by the media crows. Even the Nathan flap is an extension of news that made the rounds five years ago.
The obscure governor from Arkansas is, in contrast, a deep sea for media diving. Most recent have been stories about his pardons and commutations, as well as the news that R.J. Reynolds contributed to Action America. Mr. Huckabee–who now wants a national smoking ban in public places–responded that he never knew he accepted tobacco money, which has inspired a former adviser to claim Mr. Huckabee is being “less than truthful.”
What’s next?

MB4 on January 26, 2008 at 5:07 PM
Where did you get that? Straight off Rudy’s website?
It’s obviously biased.
HaraldHardrada on January 26, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Huckabee’s claim to be the most pious and selfless of men rings hollow when you consider the following: Arkansas set up a trust fund to do something about health care. Just by coincidence, $60,000.00 dollars managed to do directly to Mike Huckabee for “speaking fees”. Not a dime went for any public purpose. Arkansas had an ethics law against giving gifts to public figures. There was an exception for wedding gifts. So what do the Huckabees do? They have a phony reaffirmation of marriage ceremony and then claim that the ethics rule does not apply to them Even more crass, they list on the internet the gifts that they want people (i.e lobbyists) to give to them. When asked, Huckabee says “tut tut, we only got stuff from Targets). He conveniently forgot about the nice baubles he got from Dillards as well. Then it turns out that his son got caught in a Mike Vick type of crime. So what happens? The kid somehow escapes prosecution and the State Police Commander is removed from office by one MIke Huckabee. All coincidence?

Harald, you know that poll Brian Williams asked Romney about? The fact is more people think that “an evangelical Baptist preacher” would have a more difficult time uniting the country than a Mormon. For those who think that because Romney was a private equity man and that makes him the best candidate for the economy is flat out wrong.
The MSM will devastate him about that. The American people will not trust him they will think he is only benefiting tht rich. Make no mistake about it.
I know a lot about the LBO business and I will tell you now that all they do is buy a company…fire a whole bunch of people and then turnaround and sell the company.
Romney’s unelectable.

Good thing that Huckabee is out of money/steam. The national discourse for 4-8 years would go exactly like this thread.
Also, there’s no need for theist/atheist threads any more because every Huckabee thread provides ample fodder for the topic.

I would actively campaign against Romney. Yes.
Why?
Spirit of 1776 on January 26, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Because Romney is selling our defense secrets to China even now as we speak. Can you imagine what he would do as president.
Sure Romney has then rhetoric down but…
I don’t trust a word the man says.
Every single thing one of his policies he has now, he was against all his life and now that he is running for republican nomination he mysteriously switched all of his beliefs..
The man is worse than John Kerry.

You, given your professional claims should know better.
The MSM could never explain something so complicated, and you know it, or should know it – thus, the American people will never know. They never figured out Hillary’s dealings either, for same reason/s.

How is that complex?
It’s simple.

This is where Huck supporters just flat out confuse me. You think Mitt is unstable because he has changed his positions (sort of) from running for Congress or when he was governor. Huck, however, has changed his positions (and sadly lied) during the mere duration of this campaign. I don’t understand how you can handle that level of cognitive dissonance.
It makes it next to impossible to take you seriously at all. Just like your comment in the mike thread, you marginalize yourself with paulnut-like assertions. Those have no impact on thinking people.
Spirit of 1776 on January 26, 2008 at 5:54 PM
Oh, and the China thing – please. Blind trust. He’s not involved with their decisions anymore.
Spirit of 1776 on January 26, 2008 at 5:55 PM
Maybe you missed this part:
“Because Romney is selling our defense secrets to China even now as we speak. Can you imagine what he would do as president”.
The fact that Romney is a complete phony and a liar is an afterthought.
HaraldHardrada on January 26, 2008 at 5:56 PM
Blind trust?? Ha Ha Ha Ha!
I have all my money in a blind trust which the majority of it is invested in Bain capital.
Please.
HaraldHardrada on January 26, 2008 at 5:58 PM
At least Huck still has a job as the Chef on those Campbell Soup Sea Salt commercials.
Buttercup on January 26, 2008 at 5:59 PM
Duncan Hunter went from conservative god in your opinions to paul-like conspiracy theorist????
Give me a break.
HaraldHardrada on January 26, 2008 at 5:59 PM
I know I am hypersensitive to that gibot, but when he said “nails” I immediately thought of the crucifixion.
I need a break.
csdeven on January 26, 2008 at 6:01 PM
This just proves how phony and elastic you are!
Duncan Hunter is now a evil wacko right?
