Florida governor endorses … McCain; Update: Video added; Update: Did Crist promise to support Giuliani?

The decisive blow? Carl Cameron was just on Fox claiming this is a rebuke to Giuliani, who’s lobbied hard for Crist’s endorsement for months. But check this out from InTrade, via ace tipster Patrick Ishmael:

intrade.jpg

Update: It’s for real.

Link: sevenload.com

Crist is supposedly popular across the board in Florida.

Update: The boss reminds us that he’s an amnesty supporter.

Update: Crushing.

Crist did not appear at the dinner — he changed his plans several days ago, sources said — but his presence was certainly felt. Giuliani aides were visibly upset Saturday at the news that the popular Florida governor would be backing McCain.

Giuliani campaign sources said Crist pledged his endorsement to Giuliani in the early fall, when McCain’s campaign appeared dead and Giuliani was leading the state by double digits. But at the time, McCain supporters leaned on Crist to hold back and wait until after the New Hampshire primary. McCain had campaigned for Crist when he was seeking the Republican nomination for governor, and had hoped Crist would return the favor.

The true conservative position on this issue is for the government to stay out of it.

EJDolbow on January 26, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Actually, the conservative position is to protect life, and tell the protesting liberals to shove it. Not to pretend that life is one thing in New York, and another thing entirely in Alabama. That’s called “not having principles.”

JustTruth101 on January 26, 2008 at 9:09 PM

but still, don’t hand them the reins.

Voting for liberals just because they have an r behind thier names makes us as clueless as the typical democrat voter. Something has to be done. You would have thought the 2006 loss would have been an eye opener but the old boys in congress held onto the power instead of bringing in new blood. They got thier butts kicked because they had acted like democrats for 6 years and they turned around and blamed the loss on Bush. They talk a good game when on the radio with that idiot hannity but go right back to congress and bend over for the democrats. I’m convinced there is no changing the status quo, only a final crushing defeat of the republicans and the emergence of a new conservative party will save this country.

And I’d like to point out waterboarding isnt done anymore and only 3 were ever waterboarded. Its not like its a critical tool in the WOT.
William Amos on January 26, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Yeah, and I’d like to point out that only 2 nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan, only 3 hijackings happened on 9/11, and only 1 nuclear weapon in, say, New York would be catastrophic.

I’d also like to point out that Khalid Sheik Mohammed is in Gitmo from 1 of the 2 waterboardings.

What is your point again?

…McCain’s lame statement that Romney favored timetables for Iraq is getting ripped by everyone. Even on CNN – where they love McCain – they were calling McCain’s statements “extremely deceptive.” …

And Alan Colmes was practically endorsing McCain tonight.

Addendum: I’m a bit disappointed in Michael Steele. He was positively wimpy tonight when Sean asked him at least 3 times about Mitt’s quote that he would veto timetables.

Obviously neither he nor any other candidate on any other ticket “disenfranchises” anyone, as we all retain the right to vote.

But replace the spurious “disenfranchise” with “alienate,” and foolish to think it’s just one! He flies in the face of at least two traditionally Republican factions: The Evangelical and the Libertarian wings. Which is a genuinely amazing feat, considering the two have little to nothing in common.

JustTruth101 on January 26, 2008 at 10:21 PM

The reason Mccain is going to win Teusday is cause of the mojo he’s dishing out. By getting Romeny involved in this Foreign Policy issue we get away from the Economics platform. If the markets hadn’t sunk the last few weeks it would be over. Plus, McCain’s great on Foreign Policy and he’ll have that discussion all the way to Teusday morning. If Romney wants victory, he has to let today’s attack go and remember that Friday the Dow dropped 171. If monday gets a little harry on Wall Street he might steal it by a point or two, but in the end Romley needs a five point win to swing th national momentum. The fat lady is warming up.

THE CHOSEN ONE on January 26, 2008 at 10:24 PM

I got a chuckle out of my Democrat Mother during the McCain speech, when he was talking about “Our Party, working hard”-I asked “Is he addressing Republicans or Democrats?”
McCain is an ‘Ain’t', as in Ain’t going to win.
While respecting his military service, our country would be best served by his dropping out of the race. James Stockdale was also a Vietnam POW who endured much; as Ross Perot’s running mate in 1992, he and Perot split the Conservative voters with George H.W. Bush, and Clinton got in. Let’s not let history repeat itself.

“Geez, what’s with you guys? I’ve asked this before, but what leg of the Republican Party does McCain disenfranchise?

Vizzini on January 26, 2008″

Well, the name for that “leg” is called “the Base of the Party”. Even McCain’s mommy knew that one.

They (or “we”) are:
The 80% that opposed Shamnesty I and Shamnesty II.
The 75% that oppose nullifying our first Amendment rights.
The 80% that support President Bush’s Tax Cuts.
And the almost 100% that oppose Politicians lying to us.

My question to you is .. what leg of the Republican Party does McCain ENFRANCHISE? The Hawks? Well, I’m a Hawk, and I detest that SOB. Isn’t Shamnesty an attack on our national defenses, along with legal-aiding the Gitmo gang? Those are certainly not things that any true Hawk would support…

Maybe the “Stupid Bastards who don’t Know Their Arse From a Crack in the Wall” leg of the Party will be enfranchised, or the “Gee, We Have to Support McCain at all costs” leg. Or the “Let’s Run another old cranky ill Bastard against a much younger healthy mediagenic opponent and lose our ass anyway” leg. (That last one sure worked in 1996. Remember the bumpersticker: “Dole IS 96″? And Dole is 50 times more of a “war hero” than McCain. As if that really matters anyway, over 30-40 years after a war.)

I’m all for tearing the damn thing down and rebuilding it, brick-by-brick, rather than vote for that, or any other, lying POS against my own core beliefs. Why should we conservatives, who fought for decades to put our beliefs forward, be herded into supporting the totally unsupportable candidates of a corrupt and corrupting political machine like the RNC and its RINOs?

csdeven on January 26, 2008 at 10:32 PM

After what the Bushies did to him in SC 00′, he has learned to play dirty when he MUST.

No personal inside knowledge, but:

McCain started and fanned the vicious anti-Bush myth that, before the 2000 South Carolina primary, the Bush campaign made phone calls to voters calling McCain a “liar, cheat and a fraud” and accusing him of having an illegitimate black child.

On the thin reed of a hearsay account, McCain immediately blamed the calls on Bush. “I’m calling on my good friend George Bush,” McCain said, “to stop this now. He comes from a better family. He knows better than this.”

Bush denied that his campaign had anything to do with the alleged calls and, in a stunningly magnanimous act, ordered his campaign to release the script of the calls being made in South Carolina.

Spirit of 1776 on January 26, 2008 at 10:33 PM

McCain has the endorsements all lined up and we’ll pull them out as needed. I’m curious to see since he played ball with W the last eight years if the Bushies return the favor. Is this statement from McCain something you approve of?

“I would immediately close Guantanamo Bay, move all the prisoners to Fort Leavenworth (an army base in Kansas) and truly expedite the judicial proceedings in their cases,” he said. “I would reaffirm my commitment to address the issue of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. I know how important this is in Europe in particular.”

John Weaver, Sen McCain’s chief strategist, confirmed his plans for a markedly more conciliatory foreign policy. “The next president will have to work extra hard to unite our friends and divide our foes. Sadly the opposite has occurred in recent years,” he said, as Sen McCain addressed a crowded hall in the farming community of Cedar Falls.

“John believes that you can accomplish a lot more in this world by sticking to your principles, while adopting a much more humble tone with your partners.”

I’m going to be counter-CW, and say that all those McCain endorsements from “popular” amnesty supporters will cost McCain votes. They will crystalize the dangers of a McCain nomination in the eyes of conservative voters, and send those voters racing into the Romney camp.

These endorsements are a sign of desperation from a pro-amnesty GOP Establishment that knows that its hopes of importing tens of millions of poor, low-skilled, under-educated, non-English-speaking Third Worlders would be dashed if McCain were to lose.

Everyone can continue to try outdo one another in expressing their white hot their hatred for McCain or they can seriously consider the stakes for our country in this election. Did the McCain haters watch Obama’s speech tonight? There is a tidal wave of Obamamania building and we need an electable candidate to stop it. We can decide that McCain’s 82% conservative voting record makes him a commie or we can decide to get behind him if he’s the nominee for the good of the country. An Obama victory will mean defeat in Iraq. Not defeat for Republicans or W but for the United States. It won’t be any solace to McCain haters that they contributed to his defeat by staying home in November when President Obama presides over our country’s defeat in Iraq.

McCain’s problems are huge but if he’s the Republican nominee I’ll vote for him despite his problems because the alternative would be unacceptable. I would love for a viable candidate more conservative than McCain to have emerged but it didn’t happen. To paraphrase Rick Pitino, Ronald Reagan isn’t walking through that door. If McCain’s the winner we have to do what his mother said. We’ll have to hold our noses and vote for him.

McCain is attracting supporters who are just like him. Notice that when McCain has to explain something he is very weak on, he goes into his “I have the experience” “I know what to do” I have been there” rhetoric. Remember his “sunshine” remark? He had NO CLUE of the context of “sunshine”. He just guessed that we needed more sunshine and went with it.

What Mitt’s campaign will soon do is get McCain into a discussion that Juan is weak on and use a buzz word that McCain will mistake as having a negative or positive connotation and he will go with it. After he sticks his foot in his mouth, he will spend the rest of his time trying to extract himself from it.

Remember when McCain mugged with the 911 troofers? (It has since been deleted) It is possible that video will surface in an ad very soon. McCain acts like he just doesn’t have what it takes. He isn’t sharp on the issues and tries to hide it with boisterous comments delivered with an air of certainty. Once he is pressed, he gets frustrated and gets angry.

Because we are war and if McCain is the nominee he’ll be for victory while the dem will be for defeat.

BrianBoru on January 26, 2008 at 10:55 PM

No, no, no!!!

When Juan Strawberries McSurgo was asked if it would be OK if we kept American troops in iraq for fifty years, he said, “Make it a hundred!!!”.

He does not want victory in Iraq, whatever that means, he wants a long term marriage that would last longer than any of his ever have.

Let Juan Plantation McShame’s momma hold her nose and vote for him. The practice will be to her benefit as she is probably going to have to start changing his diapers again before much longer anyway.

Heh, um. that’s just wrong….But I liked it anyway.

conservnut on January 26, 2008 at 11:05 PM

Well OK, maybe his momma won’t have to start changing his diapers within a few years, but some one is going to have to do it and it sure ain’t going to be me!!!

bill30097 on January 26, 2008 at 11:20 PM

As president John McCain will be able to finally get rid of that pesky 1st amendment

bill30097 on January 26, 2008 at 11:20 PM

I’m kind of down with that bill, bill. There is something about being equal in the eyes of the law as a corporation which can easily outinfluence you and I. Atleast I. People know that charge doesn’t stick never has.

THE CHOSEN ONE on January 26, 2008 at 11:23 PM

Go ahead and vote for Hillary, I think yall make a nice couple.

THE CHOSEN ONE on January 26, 2008 at 11:25 PM

…McCain’s 82% conservative voting record…

BrianBoru on January 26, 2008 at 10:48 PM

Do you have a cite for this? At the Corner, here, they show the following ACU rating figures for McCain:

2000: 81

2001: 68

2002: 78

2003: 80

2004: 72

2005: 80

2006: 65

None as high as 82, some considerably below that. Where does your 82 number come from?

Splunge on January 26, 2008 at 11:28 PM

hmmm guess I’ll go with the Scarlett/Obama ticket

windansea on January 26, 2008 at 11:31 PM

Still pretty decent numbers though. Don’t hit em’ with numbers and facts. They’ll run like rabbits.

THE CHOSEN ONE on January 26, 2008 at 11:31 PM

“Because we are war and if McCain is the nominee he’ll be for victory while the dem will be for defeat. It’s that simple. Work your butt off for whomever your candidate is to defeat McCain in the primaries but if he’s the nominee you’ve got to get behind him if only b/c the outcome of the war could be at stake.

BrianBoru on January 26, 2008 at 10:55 PM”

Briaqn, that argument is what we call “a red herring”. The real battle will be for the future of our country. That particular war is only going to be won by conservatives fighting here at home against the PC brainwashing, dhimmitude, Globaloney, destruction of our schools, borders so undefended that a herd of elephants could walk through it undetected, endless Shamnesty do-overs, overtaxing our productive citizens, bottomless social giveaways, and the neverending pleasure of just getting screwed by our own anticonservative so-called “party”.

And what about that whole “Gitmo” thing and the wiretapping provisions? McCain won’t let us look at Moussaoui’s computer. That sort of oversight caused a little problem in downtown Manhattan several years back, I recall. Ask loony McCain about that vote, if he doesn’t just lie some more.

Brian, YOU can line up behind that scumbag. As for me, I’m going to stay home that sad yet seemingly inevitable night and hang with my familia (or “mishpochah”, as we in The Tribe say).

TexasJew on January 26, 2008 at 11:33 PM

To paraphrase Lorena Bobbitt, I am not taking any more screwings gang bangs from that those man men ever again!

If the republican party wants to give us people like mccain and crist then they need to be defeated as badly as the democrats. There appears to be NO ROOM for conservatives in the republican party.

peacenprosperity on January 26, 2008 at 11:34 PM

You’ve had the party by the grapefruits for too long. Moderates always get pinched by the social conservatives and militant liberals. Time for straight talk. You may also know us by the name the Silent Majority. Your days of telling the rest of how to live our lives are over.

He actually has an 82.3% lifetime rating. As the NRO post you quote states, his recent voting record has dropped his avg.

Here’s the link to the ACU ratings.

Billy just a little down because he can see the end is near. Plenty of room Harald, when he checks into 1600 Pennsylvania you finally see government move with some rate of speed. Not every issue will be as polarizing and we compromise which is what government is all about. Bill will take his ball and go home.

McCain is a liar

bill30097 on January 26, 2008 at 11:19 PM

I don’t think it can be denied that Romney has lied far more than anyone else during this campaign.

1. Lifelong hunter(never had a hunting license)
2. Saw his father marching with MLK(He said that multiple times)
3. Said he has the endorsement of the NRA(Not True)
4. timed withdraw/secret withdraw is Clintonian as hell IMHO

mitt romney lying Resume inflation, Kevin Madden lying trying to cover it up.

Chakra Hammer on January 26, 2008 at 11:58 PM

A two-faced RINO endorses a two-faced RINO. Big shock.
I’m going to almost… no… not almost, but ACTUALLY enjoy watching my once beloved Republican party get our asses handed to us in a reverse Reagan-Mondale way. John McCain will make Bob Dole’s candidacy look like a juggernaut.
And you know what? I’m beginning to believe we deserve it.

Sugar Land on January 27, 2008 at 12:02 AM

HMMM.

McCain wins endorsement of disloyal endorser?

That sounds right.

TexasJew on January 26, 2008 at 11:33 PM

I’m glad you’re concerned with preventing another “little problem” like 9/11. So am I, that’s why I’m not willing to sit home with my mishpochah and do nothing on election night come November. I’ll support the Republican nominee whomever it is (except Paul) b/c the dems aren’t serious about the war.

And btw, McCain’s not a scumbag. You disagree with him on illegal immigration, as do I, but that doesn’t make him a scumbag. McCain’s not the first Republican to support amnesty and I’m sure you don’t think the others that have supported amnesty were scumbags.

BrianBoru on January 27, 2008 at 12:06 AM

The Scumbags are the McCain’s of the Republican party who are trying to force amnesty upon this country and LYING about it everyday on the campaign trail.
