Video: Mystery whisper at the debate!

posted at 11:30 am on January 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

Scandal du jour on the left, rooted in the near-religious belief that you’ll always find a Republican cheating if you look closely enough. Riehl almost certainly has this right: Some NBC staffer, possibly Brian Williams, was trying to get Russert to elaborate on a vague question. A mike picked it up, everyone there — including Romney — heard it, and Mitt jumped in. Any evidence for this theory? Yeah, NBC’s political blog jumped on the story, posted on it, and then deleted their post without an explanation, likely to avoid the embarrassment of having to update when they found out what happened. You can see the remnant of it on Google News; there’s a screenshot here.

I hear either “raised taxes” or “raise taxes”. Some blogs are saying it’s “HE raised taxes” or the ludicrous “Don’t raise taxes”.
I’m sure Romney had a receiver on his back, like Bush did, and the audio was too loud. It is the only thing that makes sense.

MayBee on January 25, 2008 at 11:13 AM

I’m definetly hearing “he raised taxes”.

JetBoy on January 25, 2008 at 11:34 AM

I heard, not hear, “raise taxes.” I was expecting Russert to say “who said that?” Strangely, I forgot about it til I saw this thread.

JiangxiDad on January 25, 2008 at 11:35 AM

if this becomes an issue, a possible way for Mitt to defuse it would be to just admit he didn’t immediately pick up on what Russert was alluding to and hearing the whisper did jolt his memory.

assuming the whisperer was Williams or some other NBC staffer.

locke on January 25, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Russert is such a biased Republican-hater, I’m sure he didn’t need coaching as he tried to set up McCain for victory.

highhopes on January 25, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Notice that it was yet another attempted GOTCHA question by Russert, trying to 1)see if Mitt knew what Reagan did back in 1983 and 2)trying to get Mitt to go along with Reagan and raise taxes or disavow the Sainted Reagan’s solution and vow not to raise taxes.

Mitt totally punked russert. He said he would NOT raise taxes, even if the gipper did.

Russert truly sucked last night. Mitt handled everything Moonface threw at him beautifully.

If Mitt had a very small earpiece in his ear, why would anything coming over THAT be heard through the microphones?
Did Mitt have his ear to the microphone?

Also, I heard Williams and Russert whispering to each other mmore than once.

One time I heard, “What? Did you see that?”

And I think I heard Russert say, “That Mitt Romney is one good looking man”

No need for Romney to diffuse anything. It’s all smoke and no fire.

Remember in 2004, the libtards we’re saying Bush was wearing a microphone in the first debate–the debate in which Bush performed badly. Apparently then the microphone wasn’t working that day. Now that Romney performs well it’s because he has a microphone on. So independent of how a Republican candidate performs, he’s always cheating, and cheating by the same means–microphones.

These people are retards and you should not worry about diffusing any of their garbage. Just let it blow up in their own faces.

bert169 on January 25, 2008 at 11:47 AM

I can explain this.

Russert’s earpiece fell out just before asking the question, landing right next to his microphone.

The voice you heard was George Soros.

TX Mom on January 25, 2008 at 11:40 AM

In fairness – given their reference points it is difficult to imagine a candidate giving intelligent clear answers.

RDuke on January 25, 2008 at 11:48 AM

MSNBC is great. It’s not like they framed every question to a Republican in a negative way last night, which they never do in the Democratic debate to Hillary or Obama. But to get caught “red-handed” getting whispers of advice on what exactly to say from a staffer or Brian Williams is priceless.

Like the question Russert was framing….errrrr…I mean asking wasn’t negative enough that somebody had to secretly jump in to coach him on what to say. I betting it was Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann in the background whispering to Russert on what to say.

Too funny!

Planet Boulder on January 25, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Clearly, someone sitting to the left or right of Russert (maybe Brian Williams) didn’t like the fact that he left out of his question the fact that Reagan raised taxes, and was coaching Russert to amend his question. Don’t look for Russert to explain that, though. He proved in the Scooter Libby case that he is 1) an absolute liar; and 2) a democrat mouthpiece.

Rational Thought on January 25, 2008 at 11:49 AM

I knew the conspiracy whackjobs would be freaking out over that as soon as I heard it last night. We also heard, several times, Russert and Williams getting picked up by their mikes as they talked between themselves–at the first commercial break among others. I suppose that’s also a conspiracy with these nuts? It’s live TV, folks–screwups happen.

Life must be very interesting–but stupid (as Arte Johnson would say)–when everything’s a conspiracy, and fire can’t melt steel.

EJDolbow on January 25, 2008 at 11:40 AM

I could hear “whispers” or asides a couple of times last night from an open mike somewhere. The first one was as they were going to the first break when I also heard the “Did you see that” comment from either Russert or Williams.

The “taxes” comment was loud and clear over the broadcast. No way it could have come from a “secret” earpiece. The volume level needed would’ve made Mitt wince in pain.

Mitt is a Tax Raiser:

Club For Growth: “his record on taxes, spending, and entitlement reform is flawed. Romney’s strident opposition to the flat tax; his refusal to endorse the Bush tax cuts in 2003; his support for various minor tax hikes; and his once-radically bad views on campaign finance reform all cast some doubts on the extent and durability of his commitment to limited-government, pro-growth policies. Governor Romney’s history on tax policy is scattered with inconsistencies. As a candidate for governor, Romney refused to sign an anti-tax pledge distributed by the local Citizens for Limited Taxation. He opposed Ballot Question 1 to eliminate the state income tax and proposed an auto excise tax on SUVs and a greenfields tax on the development of ocean space. In 2003, the Governor refused to endorse the Bush tax cuts, earning the praise of Massachusetts liberal congressman Barney Frank, and was even open to a federal gas tax hike. His strident opposition to the flat tax is most curious and difficult to explain since Romney wasn’t a political candidate at the time. In 1996, he ran a series of newspaper ads in Boston, New Hampshire, and Iowa denouncing the 17% flat tax proposed by then presidential candidate Steve Forbes as a “tax cut for fat cats”. Even today, Romney continues to oppose the flat tax with harsh language, calling the tax “unfair.”

and

From New Hampshire’s Largest newspaper, The Union Leader: “SOON AFTER becoming Massachusetts governor, Willard Mitt Romney retroactively imposed new taxes on non-residents, including Granite State citizens who work, conduct business, and/or invest in the Bay State. Romney’s higher taxes reached into New Hampshire and helped vacuum at least $95 million in marginal income back across the border.

“According to Massachusetts Department of Revenue figures, the total amount that New Hampshire taxpayers surrendered to Massachusetts grew from $213.6 million in 2002 to $248.9 million in 2006, a 16.5 percent increase. (Data for 2006 are preliminary.) “Romney created these taxes new,” says Robert Roughsedge, a Hampton attorney who works in Boston. “He taxed more people and companies than before. This is what a dying state must do to keep the tax base. This is not a pro-growth, Reagan-type answer to the problem. . . . Romney chose to tax the people who left, increase the people outside of the state subject to taxation, and probably remove the incentive to leave by increasing the cost.”

and showing he is just an opportunist:

From the Washington Post: “His efforts to challenge the Democrats and promote Republican candidates for the legislature failed. His partner in the statehouse, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, lost a bid to succeed him. And Romney is leaving office with the state GOP weaker than when he arrived. In fact, Romney has commented that if he had known he was going to seek the presidency, he probably would have chosen to plant his flag not in Massachusetts but in Michigan, where his father, George Romney, served as governor and where the political culture is more compatible with his conservatism.”

and from the AP:

Associated Press: “Mitt Romney’s Harvard MBA and gold-plated resume convinced many business leaders he would follow in the tradition of corporate-friendly Republicans when he was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2002.

Within three years, some had a vastly different opinion, after Romney’s efforts raised the tax bill on businesses by $300 million as part of a multifaceted plan to eliminate a state budget deficit estimated from $2.5 billion to $3 billion.

Romney, who is now running for president declaring he never raised taxes as governor, says he merely closed “loopholes” in the tax code. Business leaders see things differently.

“These certainly were tax increases and a new source of revenue for the commonwealth,” said Brian Gilmore, executive vice president of Associated Industries of Massachusetts, the state’s largest business lobbying group.

“His indicating that he balanced a budget without raising taxes is misleading at best,” Gilmore added. “We respectfully disagree.”

Not only is he weak on the social issues, he is weak on the fiscal issues too. Folks, the GOP will come to regret a Romney nomination!

I’ve little doubt that Romney is well versed in financial and economic issues. However his record and current campaign positions are not that of a fiscal conservative, but of a “moderate” Repubican. As such, there are going to be some non-conservative examples of his record and policy positions- deal with it.

It’s always the coverup that gets you in trouble. MSNBC has officially spoken on the matter, in an email to Raw Story.

Wardrobe Microphone Malfunction.

The mysterious whisper that could be heard just before an answer from Mitt Romney at Thursday’s Republican debate was the result of a microphone malfunction, an MSNBC spokesman tells RAW STORY.

We had some audio issues and Gov. Romney’s mike wasn’t working momentarily. Simple as that,” MSNBC VP for Communications Jeremy Gaines said in a one-line e-mail response to questions about overheard whisper.

Got that? Even Raw Story is not satisfied with that response:

The response leaves some questions unanswered, such as, Whose voice did viewers hear, and why did MSNBC apparently scrub a reference to the Whisper from its Web site? RAW STORY has sent a follow up request for this information.

Romney has a Harvard MBA and a Harvard law degree. He’s made hundreds of millions of dollars working in the private sector. Say what you will about his politics, but it’s pretty obvious that the man has some smarts. I seriously doubt he needs anybody’s help answering questions.

AZCoyote on January 25, 2008 at 4:19 PM

RW,

Even if one were to willfully suspend disbelief and stipulate that Mitt’s mic was malfunctioning it still doesn’t explain who uttered the mysterious whisper, which is like the whole freaking point.

Buy Danish on January 25, 2008 at 4:22 PM

Buy Danish,

Actually to believe the statement from MSNBC you’d have to believe that they’re saying it was Romney’s voice and the broadcast was on a delay or an a live to tape situation and the malfunction was that Romney’s mic somehow beat the delay and then fixed itself and got back in sync with the delay.

I watched the replay at midnight and didn’t notice it, but I wasn’t listening too closely. I’d love to know if they scrubbed it from that broadcast.

RW_theoriginal on January 25, 2008 at 4:26 PM

RW,

Maybe the whole debate was being lip-synched, after an earlier pre-recording.

I recorded the debate. Can MNBC crawl into my TIVO and scrub that too?

csdeven writes: You have taken every issue out of context or quoted sources that have an ax to grind.”

use that as an excuse if you will, but sad how the facts get in the way of a good spon, there csdeven. Fact is Club for Growth has real problems with Mitt.

Hollowpoint writes “Oh, right- if YOU say so, it MUST be true. No need to actually explain your position.”

Good point! again, don’t let the facts get in the way of a good spin. At least he didn’t dress up in drag or drive off a bridge drunk and kill someone.

The “Mystery Whisper” non-conspiracy is like 9/11 Trutherism–it tricks idiots into identifying themselves.

I believe what MSNBC is saying is that they had a secondary mic, Mitts mic was not working at the time, so, they had a temp mic near him, the temp mic picked up on the whisper. They may of had someone sitting in the front row trying with the mic. If his mic was working at the time, the temp mic would still be around just in case his mic goes own again.

It took me a second reading but that is what I came away with, otherwise the quote does not make sense.
