Open borders advocate Juan Hernandez has joined the McCain campaign Updated

John McCain says that he has heard the American people and now understands that we need to secure the border before enacting any “comprehensive” immigration reform. But John McCain has also said that he hasn’t changed his position. He supported amnesty in 2003 by name, proposed it in 2006 and 2007 without calling it amnesty, and says that anyone who says that he ever supported amnesty is a liar. He has insulted Americans who advocate border security and has cursed at the thought of building a border fence. Which of all of these is the real John McCain? The presence of Juan Hernandez in the background of the McCain campaign tells me that John McCain is as weak on border security now as he ever was.
Old school Hot Air readers might remember Dr. Juan Hernandez. He’s a dual citizen of the US and Mexico, was a member of Vicente Fox’s government, and is as open borders as you can get. In December 2006, Michelle hosted the Factor and the producers decided to see what it would be like to put her and Hernandez on the show together. “Chummy” does not describe the atmosphere.
At the time of this argument, SeeDubya caught Hernandez telling a whopper about illegal aliens and identity theft.
Here’s a photo of him, found on McCain’s daughter Meghan’s blog. It’s from the December 10, 2007 blog entry titled “Univision Debate Gallery,” 7th photo down.

That’s Hernandez, Meghan McCain and adviser Mark McKinnon in the photo. He apparently joined the McCain campaign without much fanfare in November 2007.
Of Mexicans who move to the US, Hernandez has said:
“I want the third generation, the seventh generation, I want them all to think ‘Mexico first.’”
These are Americans that Hernandez is talking about. Does John McCain agree that they should always “think ‘Mexico first?’” That’s the man who began serving as John McCain’s “Hispanic Outreach Directo” last year. Is there any reason that anyone should think open borders fanatic Dr. Hernandez wants President McCain to secure the border? Is there any reason that anyone should trust a man to secure the border if he is getting his “Hispanic Outreach” advice from Dr. Juan Hernandez?
Update: Michelle has a lot more on this story.
Dr. Juan Hernandez, McCain Hispanic outreach director: “We must not only have a free flow of goods and services, but also start working for a free flow of people.”

Oh! Oh! Man! I hate that slime ball. OH! Jeeze. What were you saying Medved?
ronsfi on January 25, 2008 at 10:12 AM
I read the Medved article. He makes some good points but I disagree with him. McCain is no conservative.
Any path that does not lead out of America for illegal aliens is amnesty period!
The May Day protests of 2006 were organized by the AFLCIO. The Democrats want these people as voters and dependent on government social programs. Motor Voter prohibits asking if the applicant is a citizen before registering them to vote. This is why Rush called this the “Destroy the Republican Party” bill.
McCain does not get it.
We can solve illegal immigration if we do the following:
1. Provide employers with an instant method to verify the legal status of applicants.
2. Offer a $10,000 reward to the first illegal alien who turns in his boss (fine the boss $15,000 to pay for it and finance the system). All other illegals who work there become unemployed. The snitch would move to the front of the line to get a green card.
3. Tattoo the back of the right hand of all illegals caught with the letters IA for Illegal Alien, regardless of where they are caught (at the boarder, at work etc.)
4. Require proof of citizenship to rent or buy housing.
And last but not least: Deport every ACLU lawyer.
If we did the above, all the illegals would leave on their own accord. We should enforce this one year after the law is passed to give them time to settle their affairs.(We would deport the ACLU immediately of course.)
We do need a guest worker program. Allow private employment agencies to setup offices outside the US, do background checks and match applicants with US jobs. They could stay for 2 or 3 years max.
If they have an IA tattoo, they cannot be a guest worker.

“Responding to a request by lobbyists for the Oneida Indian Nation, a Democrat-leaning tribe which owns and operates the profitable Turning Stone Casino in Verona, N.Y., the FEC ruled unanimously that Indian tribes are not subject to the aggregate limit on annual giving by “individuals.” In one of those inexplicable Clintonesque legal interpretations, the FEC ruled that while a tribe is a “person” subject to individual limits on contributions to candidates, parties, and political action committees, it is not an “individual” subject to the current $25,000 limit on its annual total of contributions.” -Michelle

I’m going to give this one more try this morning. Look, I know most of you are upset that Sam Brownback, Gary Bauer, or Alan Keyes is out of the race. However, my 95% issue is National Security. The man spent five years gettin the hell beat out of him by the commies. I want someone in the White House that has a “temper” and will scare the bajesus out of Putin, Chaves, Ajmakjdjkajfj, and whoever. If any of you FOOLS want to believe there is no difference between McCain and Hillary go drink some more kool aid down on Haight-Ashbury in your drum circle.
THE CHOSEN ONE on January 25, 2008 at 10:20 AM
McC has no respect for our intelligence and is a back-stage weasel. Period.
bbz123 on January 25, 2008 at 10:21 AM
That weasel was offered a quick trip home from Hanoi cause his daddy was an admiral. He turned it down, because of his loyalty to his fellow American and spent another four years in confinement. Can you believe the nerve of McCain? It’s almost like he understands the concept of sacrifice or something.
THE CHOSEN ONE on January 25, 2008 at 10:25 AM
You have a very elementary understanding of national security. You cannot have national security without border security, and on that issue, McCain is the worst of the lot.
And quit with the juvenile name-calling already. Bryan has warned you.
Redhead Infidel on January 25, 2008 at 10:26 AM
The illegal alien problem fed directly to 9-11, in that some of the hijackers took advantage of lax ID laws and the easy fake ID racket to get the drivers licenses that allowed them to board the planes they hijacked. Border security and national security are directly related, and that’s the main reason I’m a hawk on both. McCain is only a hawk on one, and a squish on the other. That’s not enough.
Bryan on January 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Hmm. Is “FOOLS” the same as “Idiots?”
Here’s my beef: why do we have the Huckabites and now, in this thread, the McCainiacs going beserk about how if you don’t agree with their candidate, you, yes you, are somehow at fault and not a “real conservative?” You are a Fool, an Idiot, a Sheep, a traitor, etc etc etc.
Why? It’s simple: they aren’t real conservatives on every issue. That’s very sensitive to them, and thus, they have to resort to Hillary tactics, i.e. smear their opponents. It doesn’t play well, though.
Note that Fred supporters did the same, but usually, from what I noticed, it was on actual policy grounds. And Mitt people just have to deal with whether their guy has convincingly changed to Conservatism, not necessarily that his positions now aren’t conservative.
Vanceone on January 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Chosen, I would be extremely careful with your choice of insults. When Bryan warns you for calling people idiots as being ban worthy, I think the term “fools” is hardly an acceptable alternative.
Ciannaky on January 25, 2008 at 10:31 AM
If you had any knowledge of logistics, you would know that it is impossible to secure the border entirely. You could do a lot to slow down the rate of immigration, however the amount of $$$ that would entail is astronomical. It would be like fighting five Iraq wars. So if your such a genius of the Border, why don’t you enlighten us on exactly how to do that.
THE CHOSEN ONE on January 25, 2008 at 10:32 AM
If the blogosphere hits hard enough and fast enough, can we “Harriet Myers” McCain into dropping this Hernandez fellow?

I remember watching the interview between Michelle and Juan. “Oh, Mee-Shell!” Juan had such a smirk on his face that you wish you could have knocked it off.
McCain is as soft as a grape. Oh, boy, I can’t believe I’m typing this in but on the situation regarding border patrol and the fences that need to be built, I’ll have to throw my hat into the Mitt Romney ring. Sorry, Fred. You tried.
kiakjones on January 25, 2008 at 10:34 AM
The argument for McCain is that he can win. That is pretty much the only argument in favor of voting for McCain that I’ve heard. The only semi-sane argument anyways. I completely disagree with that assumption though. If McCain becomes the nominee, the Republicans will get smoked in the general election. That is why the Dems and the MSM are releasing statements daily about how fearful they are of John McAmnesty. The want him to win. Just do the math. John McCain is supposed to be able to win because of his ability to appeal to Democrats and Independents. But with the reputation the Republicans have right now I can pretty much guarantee that not one registered Democrat will be voting R this time around. Not one. Independents are primarily squishy, baseless idiots politically. They are going to get all wrapped up in the consistent platitudes for “change”. Change = Democrat. Anybody who utters the word “change” come general election time will be voting Democrat. Period. If John McAmnesty is the Republican nominee, the Republican base WILL sit this election out. I promise you that voter turnout for McCain amongst Republicans will be less then half of what it was for Bush. The only hope McCain will have to grab independents is to go all in and run to the left of the Dems. Thats right! To the left of the Dems! The only shot at winning for McCain would be a McCain/Kennedy ticket. He would have to abandon his position on the war in order to grab independents. The only hope the Republicans have to even be competitive this election season is to nominate someone the Republican base can be excited about. Someone who turns out Republican voters in greater numbers then did George W Bush. Much greater numbers. Republicans will not win this time around by attempting to attract Dems and Independents. Its just not going to happen.

As a vet myself with friends that are vets, I can tell you they are great guys but that doesn’t mean they are right for the presidency. I admire McCain for his sacrifice, I do consider him a hero, but he has no right to the white house.

pullingmyhairout on January 25, 2008 at 10:42 AM
So Bush has whined time and again. His position is to therefore do nothing. And McCain’s position is to open the borders entirely.
It is not impossible to secure the borders, as numerous Border Security plans have posited. What may be impossible is educating you.
Redhead Infidel on January 25, 2008 at 10:44 AM
While McCain’s POW story makes him a hero and believe me, I’ll say it every time, that doesn’t mean he’s the man for POTUS. He would NEVER make it through the general election, besides that, he’ll never make it to the nomination. IMO
Immigration is a HUGE issue and he’s the worst choice because of his position on it.
His other big problem is the economy. The biggest threat to any American is the threat to our wallets. We are a country of greed and I seriously don’t think that will change in my lifetime.
Romney all the way.
Geronimo on January 25, 2008 at 10:44 AM
yeah, don’t think we’ll be winning to many hearts and minds with that argument. Lets stick with basic law enforcement and border enforcement and restrict the branding for the cattle. Jeesh.
Zetterson on January 25, 2008 at 10:46 AM
The only answer is interior enforcement, when they know there is no way to make a living once here they tend to return home on there own. Once the seekers of “jobs Americans won’t do” stop invading our country, the Patrol Agents have more resources to actually stop the criminals and terrorists.
Ciannaky on January 25, 2008 at 10:47 AM
The US should not allow dual citizenship. Either you are a US citizen or you’re not. Period.
JustTruth101 on January 25, 2008 at 10:50 AM
First look at Hillary if McCain gets the nomination :(
sleepy-beans on January 25, 2008 at 10:51 AM
And I’ll add, I’m a firm believer that if you want to attract independents and right leaning Dems the last thing you want to do as a candidate is move to the left. Think about the landslide Reagan won with. He didn’t build the Reagan coalition by shifting left. He based his campaign message on bedrock conservative republican principles and when Independents and right leaning Dems heard that message expressed elegantly and clearly it became attractive to them as well.
McCain will be a disaster. He will run farther to the left then any Republican candidate in the history of this country and as a result will have no base of support anywhere. I would not be surprised if we saw a McCain/Hernandez ticket come general election time. I’m not joking.
Zetterson on January 25, 2008 at 10:53 AM
McCain just cannot be allowed to gain the nomination. The Republican party is teetering on disaster as it is. His nomination would be the final straw. I’d love a conservative party to replace the republicans, but realistically that could take 12 to 16 years. That would be way, way too late for my kid’s future.
America’s strongest enemy is the liberal media. They may very well take complete control of the country after this election if the Republican implodes.
Griz on January 25, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I doubt anyone begrudges your support of McCain, and if you had read this forum much you would know it certainly isn’t an echo chamber. Your manner of speaking, and belittling opposing viewpoints is indeed distasteful. If you represent McCain, you do him more harm than good, simply by how you express yourself.

And what is Chosen One’s explanation for the Hernandez creep in McCain’s camp?
Heh.
peski on January 25, 2008 at 10:57 AM
I cannot think of a worse advocate for open borders. Hernandez’s patronizing calling debate opponents “my friend” is especially galling.
I have never believed for a second that McCain has changed his pro open-borders stance and hiring this total anti-American slimeball for an important campaign position simply confirms it. If McCain gets the nomination, I will sit out the November election, even if Hillary is the Democrat nominee.
I hope that Romney and/or Guiliani can make a commercial on this theme before the Florida election next Tuesday. It would be devastating to McCain’s chances.
ptolemy on January 25, 2008 at 10:59 AM
And, he might also want to explain why McCain doesn’t lead the primary polls in his own state.

I’m no McCain fan, but just thinking here…
Are we overreacting? A single photo of Mr. Hernandez on McCain’s daughter’s blog. Is there any other evidence that Mr. Hernandez has had direct access to the candidate himself and not some advisor or offspring?
Can any special interest spokesperson with a backstage pass get to these people?
Hendo on January 25, 2008 at 11:03 AM
McCain will fight tooth and nail every Republican that would contradict him on anything. But being a liberal himself, he would be absolutely useless to our party with the Democrats running congress.
Imho if this country is to crumble like a dry cookie in the next four years, I would rather see it happen under the Democrats watch. Clinton/McCain?, I choose Hillery. Romney/ Clinton? I choose Romney.

I finally figured it out last night after South Park went off: The reason so many in Talk Radio and “true conservatives” are upset with McCain’s success is purely power. A McCain elections means that Delay, Limbaugh, Hannity, Levine, and Laura are at a loss of influence. With Hillary in there, THEY KEEP THEIR TITLES as the voice of the conservative movement. Essentially, the pundits need a Hillary victory. Just a little something to digest goin’ down the road.

Hernandez is the guy who thinks that illegal aliens are “enriching” our country and culture. I hope that this gets out into the MSM although I’m sure they’ll cover for McCain.
Chosen One apparently thinks that talk show hosts have influence on conservatives. Nothing could be further from the truth. Conservatives listen to them to get the truth…not to hear it manufactured. You need to go to Air America for that. Also, if he had the logistical knowledge of Israel, maybe he would realize that the borders can be secured.

How Long Do We Have?
About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:
“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.”
“A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.”
“From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.”
“The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years”
“During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:
1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage”
Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000
Presidential election:
Number of States won by:
Gore: 19
Bush: 29
Squar e miles of land won by:
Gore: 580,000
Bush: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by:
Gore: 127 million
Bush: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Gore: 13.2
Bush: 2.1
Professor Olson adds : “In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country.
Gore’s territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare…” Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the “complacency and apathy” phase of Professor Tyler’s definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation’s population already having reached the “governmental dependency” phase.
If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegal and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.
Nineball on January 25, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Y’know, I think I agree with abolishing the border between the U. S. and Mexico–Manifest Destiny, anyone? Let’s just annex Mexico, and then illegal immigration ceases de facto.
On a separate issue, tatooing illegal immigrants is not “Hitleresque.” It would be, if the suggestion were to tattoo ALL HISPANICS, but the original idea proposed is more akin to the East India Trading Company’s branding of pirates.
Not that I endorse the idea, just making a clarification.
Finally, “THE CHOSEN ONE” (I can’t help but picture gopher chucks), why would the election of the very liberal John McCain affect whether ACTUAL CONSERVATIVES are still considered conservative?

Hernandez and the NYT for McCain – no more commentary needed, if the facts about these two are well known.
I’m actually surprised that our Jaibones hasn’t figured this out, yet.
It’s not “Ms. E. who’s worked wonders”, it’s that our MB4 is a “wry, curmudgeonly, and entertaining voice”, as JiangxiDad said, who likes to quote Mark Twain, Schopenhauer and others, among them even himself. He’s also one of the wittiest, funniest, intelligent, elusive, informed, annoying, and above all independent characters around here. He knows how to give/take, is not afraid, and stands his ground, without pouting. I did nothing more than recognize the sophistication and to treat him with more nuance and balance than others. I also like complex people, especially those who don’t take themselves too seriously.
Having said all that, where is his lordship today? Can he drop the cigar for a few moments and show us how to fight McCain?
Entelechy on January 25, 2008 at 11:59 AM
Still waiting…Tell me how a McCain presidency will differ from a Hillary presidency. Waiting…Hello?…Anyone there?…
Rational Thought on January 25, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Two minutes after McCain takes his hand off the Bible, the Mexican border will be opened. Hillary might wait a day.

Cripes, how did John McCain get a Hottair password?
entagor on January 25, 2008 at 11:59 AM
The same as Huckabee did. If Rudy should resurface, which I doubt, watch to see one, or more, of his Doppelgängers.
Entelechy on January 25, 2008 at 12:04 PM
McCain is all done.

That’s Juan.

Seriously is the only issue that concerns you guys is immigration?
Lets elect a tough border patrol agent then.
terryannonline on January 25, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Heh. What a perfect fit for McCain. For conservatives, not so much.
Spirit of 1776 on January 25, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Eh… I should have checked first. My bad. Thanks for pointing that out ColtsFan. I’ll try to be more careful with the cut and paste in the future.

Hey, I know. Instead of a third party. HOW BOUT A REPUBLICAN PARTY?
oakpack on January 25, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Maybe Romney’s hotair password dropped outta his wallet at the debate.
McLovin on January 25, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Not so fast oakpack, I said a New Conservative Party, not a Republican party. There is a difference nowdays. A lot of the repubs have lost their way, ie. McCain.
kcd on January 25, 2008 at 12:18 PM
If you don’t agree with party, then why be a member of it?
Since 1994 the Republican party has shifted away from the core principle of Reagan. All was great there for a while, but power has corrupted it.
I consider myself more conservative than anything else, so why not have a party I can proudly call my own?
Hendo on January 25, 2008 at 12:18 PM
The Immigration Issue is tied directly to two huge pillars of conservative thought: border security and economic integrity. So many of the problems plaguing places like Los Angeles are the direct result of Illegal Immigration. The sooner we put an end to this madness the better.
We simply need to stop rewarding line-cutters. There are people all over the world looking to come to this nation, so why in blue blazes would we look the other way just because of geographical proximity?
HebrewToYou on January 25, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Wow. See above post. Great minds do think alike! : )
kcd on January 25, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Not sure I understand this. McCain has strayed far from the conservative reservation on much more than immigration. IIRC, you are Hispanic living in a border state. Are you in favor of McCain’s choice of Hispanic Outreach Director?
a capella on January 25, 2008 at 12:25 PM
I think a New Conservative Party is a great idea!
The GOP is a dinosaur and we’re approaching the K-T Boundary.
HebrewToYou on January 25, 2008 at 12:25 PM
The man may have had some integrity 30 years ago, granted. But that doesn’t mean he has a bit of it now. American politics has a way of corrupting all it touches.
I don’t want American jobs and Social Security “sacrificed” for his (liberal), bleeding heart, illegal immigration policy. He needs to run as a Democrat and quit pretending to be a conservative.
Ernest on January 25, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Well said. That goes for Mike Huckabee, too.
