Audio: McCain officially on a roll with coveted Geraldo Rivera endorsement

posted at 12:59 pm on January 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

First the Times, now a guy known for comparing amnesty opponents to Nazis and hinting that border enforcement is motivated by race hate. Toss in that big Juan Hernandez “get” and Maverick’s having himself a big day, huh? Here’s the full seven-minute segment, although you’re really just interested in the beginning unless you want to hear him talk about whether a “brown man” can ever really be red-faced.

Bryan mentioned in one of the other 20 McCain posts on the site today that his website’s stupidly touting the Times endorsement, but it’s even worse than that. The editorial’s reprinted in full. This would be the same editorial that dumps on the surge and opens by emphasizing just how bad the entire Republican field is, with McCain merely being the best of a horrible lot. If I write a post called “McCain Reeks But I’m Voting For Him Anyway,” will they pick that up too?

Update: Aha: “After touting their support from every paper under the sun for the past month, the McCain camp has yet to alert reporters of their backing from the most prominent one in the country.”

Update: Amnesty by 2012!

I think however after last nights debate McCain will get the NRA nod. That will be a feather for him

“the circle is now complete”

CaptainObvious on January 25, 2008 at 1:05 PM

The rest of the Republicans should be hammering home the fact that the NYT likes McCain, proving his liberal status.

Fuzzball on January 25, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Geraldo “would be proud to vote for him.”
Nuff said.

oakpack on January 25, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Those last numbers are staggering. If Mitt’s the nominee he’ll surely recover, but it’s still quite…distressing. Go John

Baphomet on January 25, 2008 at 1:08 PM

Wow. I didn’t see that coming…..

Who would have thunk?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on January 25, 2008 at 1:08 PM

Too bad in that Electability poll they forget to mention McCain and Hillary are vying for the same votes.

Todays Rasmussen numbers nationally

Date 1/25/08

Giuliani 12%
Huckabee 17%
Romney 21%
McCain 26%

William Amos on January 25, 2008 at 1:10 PM

I’m an NRA member.
NRA people want the border fence to be built, and our country’s immigration laws to be enforced.
Pray tell, what NRA votes will McCain gain for his stands on those topics?

TexasJew on January 25, 2008 at 1:12 PM

He has been a staunch advocate of campaign finance reform, working with Senator Russ Feingold, among the most liberal of Democrats, on groundbreaking legislation, just as he worked with Senator Edward Kennedy on immigration reform.

Please…..PLEASE let these be the kiss of death to his campaign….we do not need a Liberal Republican for President

Fuzzball on January 25, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Didn’t Michelle descibe McCain as the Geraldo of the GOP candidates?

Frozen Tex on January 25, 2008 at 1:13 PM

The rest of the Republicans should be hammering home the fact that the NYT likes McCain, proving his liberal status.

Thank you He is not getting my vote that is for sure.

Romney or I make it to work on time election day.

TroubledMonkey on January 25, 2008 at 1:14 PM

It looks like today’s Rasmussen poll reflects my suspicions: Twenty-six percent of Conservatives are Liberal. I knew it!

THE CHOSEN ONE on January 25, 2008 at 1:19 PM

By Editorial, The New York Times
January 25, 2008

We have strong disagreements with all the Republicans running for president. The leading candidates have no plan for getting American troops out of Iraq. They are too wedded to discredited economic theories and unwilling even now to break with the legacy of President Bush. We disagree with them strongly on what makes a good Supreme Court justice.

Everyone that thinks they prefer a Republican to the Democrat candidates needs to focus their attention here….Especially for any future writing they do on ANY Republican. I know I’m not speaking to the majority of readers here, but the ones that continue to put stock in anything the MSM (sic) has to say about Republican candidates and office holders.

Fuzzball on January 25, 2008 at 1:19 PM

If I were Romney, I would run an ad that says “The National Review endorses Mitt Romney. The NYT endorses John McCain.” That’s pretty much all it needs to say.

TX Mom on January 25, 2008 at 1:20 PM

Today’s Rasmussen Poll from Alabama. Mitt again is trailing badly in a Southern State.

Alabama Poll

Friday, January 25, 2008

John McCain and Mike Huckabee are tied for the lead in Alabama’s Republican Presidential Primary. McCain and Huckabee each attract 27% support while Mitt Romney is a distant third at 15%. Rudy Giuliani is the choice for 8% while Ron Paul is supported by 3% and 20% are not sure.

If the NRA does endorse this clown, then it will further reinforce my belief that my decision to cancel my membership in the NRA ten years ago was, in fact, the correct one.

Frozen Tex on January 25, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Good point. Settling into a long-distance feud now I guess.

I don’t take Geraldo seriously in relation to political commentary. On his show this weekend, he could recall which primary (SC) had just occurred. That level of not-with-it, doesn’t reflect a deep or analytical thinker at least on political topics.

The NRA typically doesn’t endorse candidates before the nomination. Certainly they’d give McCain or Romney a higher rating than Hillary though.

Hollowpoint on January 25, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Sigh. I warn many in here that Mitt was a dead end candidate. I told everyone that Mitt does not sell in the south. More proof Mitt is getting creamed in Texas too.

Thats Georgia, Alabama and now Texas where Mitt trails badly.

William Amos on January 25, 2008 at 1:22 PM

I’ve been saying the same thing. Mitt will stink in the South. Hillary will do very well with Southern women and blacks, and Obama would bring out HUGE numbers of black voters. Hard to recover from your opponent winning near 100% of a large proportion of the total vote, especially when Southerners will not come out in force for a slick Yankee. How does Mitt sell with some guys I’ve knocked down beers with in North Georgia? Not too well.

RW Wacko on January 25, 2008 at 2:03 PM

William Amos
You’re doing a good job shilling for that lying scumbag McCain.
Now show me Hillary Clinton’s numbers in the South against a conservative non-shamnesty candidate like Romney.

National polls mean nothing at this time, and McCain will lose the national election for the Republicans GUARANTEED.

There’s not a lick of difference between him and “his good friend” Hillary, except for the GWOT, and I wouldn’t trust him not to kiss their asses on that one as well.

TexasJew on January 25, 2008 at 2:28 PM

I’m waiting for the Dixie Chicks endorsement.

pappy on January 25, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Gee, racist, pro-amnesty latino jerks supporting Juan McCain?

SHOCKAH!

Exit question: If 70%+ are opposed to amnesty overall with the numbers being even higher in the GOP, shouldn’t these “endorsements” (until Hillary gets the Dem nom) be a clear indicator that McCain is TOTALLY not the guy for the GOP? Y’know, for all the dopes that still haven’t caught on to Juan’s open contempt for us rank-and-file types, still don’t understand what McCain-Finegold does, shouldn’t THIS raise a red flag?

SuperCool on January 25, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Republicans should have backed Fred he could have won the south and united the republican party.

Its MITT who is the stalking horse for McCain. Mitt would have been done after his twin defeats only his money kept him in.

By Mitt staying in we will now have a McCain Nomination. Mitt garaunteed that now.

William Amos on January 25, 2008 at 2:32 PM

SimplyKimberly on January 25, 2008 at 2:42 PM

National Polls mean nothing right now with the national elections so far away. 6 months ago it was all Rudy and the soon to enter the race Fred. Now the polls are for McCain and Huckabee.. Using a poll to prove a point is worthless considering how wrong the polls were in NH.

I think it’s going to come down to a brokered convention with delegates being a deciding factor. I don’t see McCain or Huckabee winning a ton of delegates by winning over smaller southern states, while Mitt already has a sizeable lead in delegates by finishing first in 3 races and 2nd in 2 of them. Pretty good record despite the media’s infatuation with their liberal leaning McCain.

Luckedout on January 25, 2008 at 2:44 PM

That electability gap poll is a complete sham, for the following reasons:

1. Sample size: that is a hyper-anorexic sample which can’t even be taken seriously.
2. National polling doesn’t matter when elections are decided by electoral votes!

To figure out how candidates would do in the election, pollsters have to survey each state separately and find out which candidates would win each state against each other, and which of them would then win the election based on the electoral vote tally from it.

A small sample size like that will easily favor the more liberal urban centers and throw it all out of whack. Polls like that shouldn’t even be allowed to be released, they are 100% meaningless.

VERY clear. As Zogby indicated. Even 61% of Dems. don’t want amnesty (50% attrition and 11% mass deportations).
Note this is the ONLY poll that offers all three choices. Most other polls only offered Bush’s and McCain’s false dichotomy: “We can’t deport 12 million yada yada, THEREFORE we have to reward them with instant residency and a pathway to citizenship.” Bullcrap.

If only Mitt (only remaining candidate not guaranteed to sign Shamnesty ‘09?) would pound on this every chance.

Americans want attrition through enforcement. It’s law enforcement, stupid. It’s a winning issue.

And I wear Geraldo’s badge of “malignant” proudly. Just like Graham’s “bigots” badge.

Can we arrange that…maybe..

kcd on January 25, 2008 at 3:30 PM

If the Republican candidate, whomever, does not play the “illegal immigrant will take your job” card, they are not worth choosing.
This is the fear card that can tilt the election. Here it is:
Do you want your job taken by an illegal immigrant? After 10 years on the job, do you want to be the one holding the sign in a Home Depot parking lot? Well, all of you union men, and blue collar men and woman, the people this country shoulders we stand on, your job is at risk. The Dems want to transfer your jobs, to the illegal immigrants who have more protection than you. They are willing to sacrifice your job, for their votes. You are their sacrifice to power.
