Audio: Mark Levin and Sen. Orrin Hatch on the FISA debate

I know, that headline is a sleep-inducer. I got a little punchy typing it. FISA FISA FISA. But, if you care about the country’s ability to track foreign terrorists overseas and if you care whether or not we can monitor their phone calls to sleeper cells in the US without having to get a warrant every single time, then you need to listen to this audio clip. It’s great radio, with Mark Levin and Sen. Hatch picking apart the ongoing debate in the Senate on this vital war issue. Sen. Hatch is great on this issue and he has been in the middle of the fight. And stick around until the end, to hear Hatch’s presidential endorsement. Agree with it or not, it’s interesting.

That’s my Senator! I actually met Orrin Hatch at a rally in SLC. Also my grandpa was one of his good friends.

CABE on January 25, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Levin’s taking McCain apart right now.

JiangxiDad on January 25, 2008 at 6:12 PM

Who did Hatch endorse?

Vanceone on January 25, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Vanceone on January 25, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Romney. The man saved the Utah Olympics. Plus they’re both LDS…which probably adds to it.

CABE on January 25, 2008 at 6:19 PM

I listen to Mark Levin every morning, you can stream it off his website without commercials. More people need to listen to him, like Fred Thompson, he is a teacher.

ctmom on January 25, 2008 at 6:30 PM

So, how do we find out the roll call vote?

atxcowgirl on January 25, 2008 at 6:45 PM

A good article on the Background of the FIS Act. “Red Star Over FISA”….

More Levin!

Congress gets done off-loading speculative mortgages to Freddie Mac, we will indeed a financial whiz when that one goes under.

Starlink on January 25, 2008 at 6:35 PM

Have absolutely no idea what that means.

broker1 on January 25, 2008 at 7:59 PM

Great interview with Jonah Goldberg on that show.

Right here

myamphibian on January 25, 2008 at 9:39 PM

A warrant is mandatory. Don’t try to scare me with sleeper cells and other threats. A warrant is a necessary protection of our rights.

tgillian on January 26, 2008 at 7:58 AM

Right, tgillian, we need to be scared of REAL threats, like 20 foot waves crashing into New York City from melting glaciers.

eeyore on January 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM

You Romney supporters here are drinking Koolaid from somewhere. In Michigan Romeny was paling around Hezbollah supporting Congressman Joe Knollenberg and as a partner with Bain he has done deals with the Islamists in Dubai, UAE, Saudis etc.

And the worst thing about Romney is that he is just plain dishonest. His sudden changes on abortion, taxes, gun control, gay rights, illegal immigration just don’t pass the giggle test.

As for the Olympics, his anti-US statements made then were disgusting.

Romney is for Romeny and in that sense he is pretty much like Hillary.

georgealbert on January 26, 2008 at 11:47 AM

tgillian-

How good was that warrant against Moussaoui, “the 20th hijacker”?

The feds failed to open his laptop because it might have infringed on his “rights”.

3,000 dead resulted from this fastidious, suicidal pu$$yfooting.

A death warrant is all we’ll be signing for our Civilization if we do not understand that to save your a$$, at times, you need to move faster than lumbering, technicalities.

Rare times, but real times.

Like when you are in a global war with Islamic jihadist terrorist maniacs.

Or hadn’t you noticed?

Here here! I don’t trust the Government. The founding fathers in their wisdom set checks on executive power. I don’t care if it’s “For the Children” or to stop hypothetical terror attack. You stay out of my business unless you have a warrant.

You don’t trust the government. Who do you whine to when your parade gets rained on? Who do you whine to when you lose your job and miss a paycheck? Who do you whine to everytime you have any disscomfort in your life? The government, that’s who. Guess who you blame as well?
Do you think for one single minute, that someone in an intelligence agency, IRS, some social agency or any agency related to the government couldn’t legally expose your dirty little secrets. What about what the ACLU could do to you, and has done to people not of their ilk?
It’s groups that claim to be protecting your rights that are directly responsible for nearly three thousand murders on September eleventh, 2001st.
It’s time to stop playing paddy cakes and deal accordingly with the entities that want to harm The United States and its’ people.
If someone in the ‘government’ finds out that you have a subscription to Hustler, I DON’T CARE.

oakpack on January 26, 2008 at 4:10 PM

oakpack on January 26, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Who the hell are YOU talking about? “You whine” “You Blame”
There’s a good Nazi.
The ACLU is not responsible for 9/11. That’s just a stupid comment. And what is the deal with “government” in quotes? You don’t believe it exists?
You may love bureaucrats snooping into your private affairs but I demand a warrant.
In response to the overall tone of your comment is reply
EAT POO!

I think I just puked a little bit in my mouth… anyone have a mint? I hope you understand the horrendous consequences, the terrible loss, and the nationwide grief that sentiment is sure to cause in the future… We truly are screwed…

Oh yeah it will be my fault. Not the terrorists. You’re right. All this Bill of Rights nonsense is incredibly dangerous. Let’s just can all that silliness so the Great Nanny can keep us safe and warm. We’ll just nuzzle up to the teat of state and be happy with what were given.

Next time you go to the DMV, just imagine that clerk listening to your private conversations. If you are OK with that, move to China.

Sleep easy, I hope nobody from the DMV is listening to your calls. That truly would be a horrible thing, almost as horrible as say… 9/11?

At first I was reflexively in favor of Guantanamo and I still think we need to incarcerate the enemy as long as they pose a threat. However, on further consideration it occurred to me that I have no idea who is there and why. Can the government just grab anyone and declare them “Enemy Combatants”? How do WE know they are enemy? Couldn’t they just grab anyone and place them there with no recourse for the imprisoned? You may be OK with Bush doing it but what if Hillary is elected? Do you just trust her to do right thing? Are you sure that she will only listen to non citizen terrorists? Is that the kind of power you want to give her? What keeps government from abusing this power? What safeguards do we have against false imprisonment. Once you set the precedent it becomes a matter of degree. If the government want’s this kind of suspension of civil rights then it should declare martial law. If the crisis does not warrant such a declaration then they are bound to recognize the Natural Rights of all people, including the enemy. Recognizing those rights is what separates us from them.IMHO

Have a terrorist kill my fellow countrymen… or have my fellow countrymen make sure I’m not helping the terrorist by listening in on me ask my wife whats for dinner. The choices really are hard aren’t they? Oh I just don’t know where to prioritze… anyone care to help?

you are right, I really am still feeling that suspension of Habeas corpus… the government has been running wild with it ever since Lincoln was in charge… geez, thank you for letting me see the light. I am at your eternal debt

OK. So either you’re not very bright or you are being deliberately obtuse. Who, in your imagination, do you think is listening on the other end. When you think “Government”, think DMV because THAT is how government is expressed. That is what you get when you have government involved. Low level bureaucrats are the oars of the ship of state. You seem to be buying into the fallacy that government can’t fight terrorism and respect civil rights at the same time. Where do you get such a notion? I don’t mind surveillance as long as it is done within constitutional bounds. What I am against is a blank check for the next Lib Executive that wants to maintain power. I want to be protected from them as well. Why don’t you?

i love this debate……prove that US intelligence agencies are listening to you talk to your family/friends, unless you associate with known terrorists. we are not talking about domestic phone calls. this is an issue of international phone calls made by or to known terrorists by people in this country, citizens or not. quit pretending that big brother is listening in on everything you say.
