Video: “Democrats’ Worst Nightmare”

Johnny Mac’s new ad, well made and entertaining. It’s one of McCain’s two central story lines: He’s a national security hawk and he can beat the Democrats. The ad’s central flaw, however, is that it’s based on polls that don’t mean very much because they’re so far out from the actual election (Carter led Reagan at this point, and Dukakis led Bush 41 coming out of the conventions, for instance) and that McCain is also the conservatives’ worst nightmare. Electing him is no guarantee that any conservative position will be defended against a Democrat Congress. It also conveniently leaves out the fact that John McCain almost became a Democrat himself in 2001. McCain holds the distinction of being the only candidate who keeps members of both parties up at night — one side claims to fear going against him, and one side fears having to support him. Such is the life of the Maverick.
Still, it’s a good ad.

I think we might be surprised to see how many “true conservatives” will NOT vote for McCain. Conservatives are TIRED OF SETTLING!! I repeat, maybe a good old fashioned a$$ whippin’ from the democraps and four years of running our country into the ground, will make the conservatives get the heads out of their a$$es and get their crap together! Whew…I feel better..

What? You’re just going to discard the webpolls? Because why? Phone polls conducted nationally via telephone and run by the MSM or other organizations are so much more trustworthy? Are the actual votes of real conservatives on conservative websites not a far more valid window into the mind of … “conservatives?”
Also, you might be able to convince me if you can manager to find one of those “accepted” polls asking the question we’re discussing, which is …
“Would you vote for John McCain in the general election or would you sit out?”
How about THIS one? Results found HERE.
Since we’re debating what conservatives will do, it’s perfectly reasonable that a sample of fourteen thousand votes off the most popular conservative blogs would be more accurate than any MSM national poll.
Be sure to read the comment section to get a real positive feeling about that voter turnout.

And McCain, Lindsey Graham, Huckabee, and the rest of those who spent all of last year flipping you off and calling you a bigot thank you for your gullibility. They’re counting on it. Voters closing their eyes and voting for the “R” are the exact reason we’re in the situation we’re in right now.
But hey. Why try to change it? Why stand up and show them we’re not going to keep kissing their arrogant a$$es? We should all be good slaves and do what’s best for
usthem.Trust me. They tell each other that all the time. “Those idiot voters aren’t about to allow Hillary to win, so we can do anything we want and we’ll be fine.”
Gregor on January 24, 2008 at 5:20 PM
Yep, sort of like the general election.
“Also, those polls only show a person’s preference between McCain and Hillary.”
None of the polls add up to 100%, so clearly “none of the above” was offered as an option.
“They do not take into account that a large percentage of those very same voters will not even bother to show up at the polls on election day.”
The Rasmussen and USAToday polls were of likely voters. Which means the respondents were asked if they were going to sit out.
“They’re meaningless.”
Are they any less meaningful than the polls you claim show 30% of conservatives sitting out a McCain candidacy in protest?
RightOFLeft on January 24, 2008 at 5:24 PM
that is why i am voting for Romney. c’mon dems want mcamnesty.
custer on January 24, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Exactly. A McAmnesty is as good as a Hillary.
kcd on January 24, 2008 at 5:27 PM
Again, not going to vote for McCain, no matter who the Dem is.
Yes, I know the arguments for voting against the Dem, no matter who the Rep is.
But as someone said recently (can’t remember, sorry), the country/economy/etc will be screwed by this craptastic lefty nonsense whether its McCain or Hill/Barack at the helm. I’d rather see that happen under a big “D” for future reference.
Midas on January 24, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Wow, you really are jaded. I suppose we all may have good reason, however calling folks “gullible” or other derogatory names is an abrasive way to make your case, don’t you think?
Simply put, I’m not about to sit out a national election cycle. If it boils down to voting for the least offensive candidate in November, that’s exactly what I’ll do.
I don’t know, since national security is my #1 issue, perhaps I’ll take my cue from our military and see who they support to prosecute this WOT. I’m pretty sure no matter who our nominee is, these men and women will NOT be rolling out the red carpet for Obama or Hillary.
CliffHanger on January 24, 2008 at 5:40 PM
How about THIS poll?
Gregor on January 24, 2008 at 5:46 PM
Two words: Ron Paul.
If the comment section was representative of the voting public, McCain and Huckabee would’ve dropped out months ago, with Fred being a frontrunner. But it isn’t representative of the voting public, unfortunately.
Hollowpoint on January 24, 2008 at 5:54 PM
Chill, dude- that’s a perfectly legitimate stance to have. Just not one everyone else (myself included) holds right now.
Hollowpoint on January 24, 2008 at 5:57 PM
No. It’s simply the truth. I guess you’re against calling Islam a violent religion too? Are we all supposed to be PC now?
Exactly. And as I’ve pointed out before, you’re doing exactly what Republicans have repeatedly done, which is exactly why we have clowns like John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Mike Huckabee.
I’m not trying to insult you. It’s just reality. Until you grow some balls and stand up for yourself, you’re continue to find yourself voting for the “least offensive candidate” every single year. When do you finally draw the line? What would possibly give you the impression that anything at all will change as long as you keep rewarding them for treating us like sh!t?
Gregor on January 24, 2008 at 6:00 PM
Sorry. Ron Paul was nowhere on these polls and your comparison is completely off base.
Uh … really?
Last I checked, Huckabee is on life support. As for McCain, it’s been explained many times but you’re apparently ignoring the explanation that McCain is winning on the backs of independent voters in open primaries.
Again, the discussion is not whether or not Dems or independents will vote for McCain. It’s whether or not CONSERVATIVES will vote for McCain, which they will not.
Gregor on January 24, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Well, I don’t know about that “nightmare” thing.
He gives me a bad taste in my mouth, and indigestion…Just like all the other Liberals.

Meet Joe Biden.
Spirit of 1776 on January 24, 2008 at 6:26 PM
Well, I’m certainly glad you’re not trying to be insulting. And yes, I’ve checked and I still have my balls, although they are a bit tender at the moment.
If I were to have applied your standards to candidates during past elections, I would’ve stayed out of most of them. Hell, I don’t even need to be registered to vote because my candidate-of-choice never seems to win. I should just withdraw to the backwoods of Idaho, build a shelter and stock up on canned goods until this sham we call “representative democracy” blows over.
CliffHanger on January 24, 2008 at 6:29 PM
Yes. Islam is a violent cult.

CliffHanger on January 24, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Well, that’s not exactly what I was saying. Hillary is in the process of running to the left at this moment. A few months ago, when Hillary was inevitable, she started to run a general election campaign. She began to move to the middle. The Kos crowd went bazzerk and she had to do a bit of a U turn and head back to the left once it became clear that Obama was actually going to give her a fight. She’ll have those anti-war votes nice and secure come general election time. They certainly won’t be voting for McCain. In other words, the independents (largely anti-war) and Democrats (entirely anti-war) will most certainly vote for Hillary once she is matched up against McCain. That is why the MSM is dying for McCain to win the primary – the independents that he is so heavily reliant upon will march like lemmings into the Clinton camp. That election will be one of the most lopsided elections in the history of the United States. It will be completely embarrasing to the republican party. The MSM will say the Reps put up their most electable candidate yet still lost in a landslide. Truthfully, the only real chance the Republicans have to be competitive this time around is if they elect someone the base can get extremely excited about. At this early stage it doesn’t look good. But we shall see.

hollowpoint is a lost cause
HOLLOWPOINT THE KINGMAKER!!!
And yes- if there was a do-over button that prevented any of the remaining candidates- Republican or Democrat- from winning, I’d push it in a heartbeat. But in the end my opinion has approximately zero impact in who wins or loses.
Hollowpoint on January 24, 2008 at 6:44 PM
Hollowpoint, I apologize for the sharpness of that comment. I mistakenly thought your comment came from RightOFLeft and my tone was based on that ongoing conversation.
Gregor on January 24, 2008 at 6:46 PM
Since you’re the one who brought up polls, let’s see what they have to say:
South Carolina: McCain got 26% of self-described conservatives.
Nationally, 31% of those polled describe him as “conservative”.
In Florida only 15% of conservatives are backing him, but that’s still good for 3rd place amongst that demographic.
While McCain does appeal to moderates much more than to conservatives, I don’t see evidence that conservatives won’t vote for him. I won’t, but most will if it comes down to McCain vs Hillary or Obama.
Hollowpoint on January 24, 2008 at 7:00 PM

Rudy is a bit liberal, but a hard-asss new yorker who told the saudis to shove it…….
Romney looks like he NEVER got in a street fight……

Rasmussen Markets data suggests that McCain has a 40.5% chance of winning in Florida while Romney is given a 56.5% chance. Immediately following his victory in South Carolina, McCain was given a 70% chance of winning Florida. But, expectations for the Arizona Senator have declined in recent days. According to the markets, Giuliani is a distant third with a 8.0% chance of victory. Numbers in this paragraph are from a prediction market, not a poll.
windansea on January 24, 2008 at 7:04 PM
I think you might be surprised to see how many “true conservatives” will NOT vote for Romney. When the general election comes around, and IF by some miracle Romney is the nominee, I will by no means vote for him, and in fact I will campaign heavily against him. The man is democrat in Republican clothing.
A RINO of the most obvious sort. Human Events magazine even named Romney as one of the top ten biggest RINO’s, yet we never hear a peep out of Malkin, Limbaugh, and other establishment goons about this because they can control slick mitt and he fits in with their agenda.
His supporters are just as shiesty and hateful as he seems to be.
