favor and retire from the Senate for good!

Don't count on that. When he lost in 2000, he went back to the senate and created as much havoc as he could! Amnesty, McCain Feingold etc. He reached across the isle alright, to slap the republicans in the face! He is a very spiteful man.

I don't vote for Democrats so there is no chance that I would vote for McCain or Giuliani or Huckabee. I still think that I could vote for Romney although his leftist support for the Brady Bill and against assault weapons sent a chill down my spine last night.

We have to face the fact that every one of these clowns has been at least as liberal as Hillary in the pretty darned recent past. Romney evolved from his pro abortion and gay marriage stances that got him elected and Rudy used to be a gun grabber and civil union supporter but he would act conservative if we elected him. Huckabee is in full spin actually making people believe that he would be tough on immigration when a short time ago he was calling us fence folks all sorts of nasty names. McCain is absolutely the worst, he is obviously more comfortable with the liberal agenda and liberal politicians. They all say the word conservative but not a one of them is.

This is exactly what the GOP has become. Between the Democrats and our own Dem Lite crowd we are going to have amnesty dressed up as something else. We are going to keep seeing poisoned Chinese toys in our kids hands and jobs moving to places where they pay people 25 cents a day. Our taxes will go up or the deficit will go up and our dollar will remain near worthless and our gas will cost more all the time. Our government will get more and more bloated and pork will overflow Congress. We are screwed folks, there isn't a conservative left in this race.

I’m a Fred-head. But if J-Mac is the nominee, I say let’s support him.

jgapinoy on January 24, 2008 at 11:10 PM

Nope. If we're going to get global warming reactionism, amnesty, reversal of tax cuts and economy ruination, Dem-friendly cooperation from the President, encroachment on free speech, etc - let it be done under a President who is not only a Dem/Lib in behavior, but also has a "D" after their name.

If all of that happens under a McCain-R presidency (and it would), that would be worse than letting a Dem win and do all of those things.

I deeply respect McCain's service and support of the military, and I am seething mad at the prospect of McCain being the R nominee.

McCain really loves to say "Pork barrel spending" huh?
No way on earth I would vote for him although he was kinda funny last night when they asked him about his temper.
Romney all the way.

If McCain is the nominee, and you are correct about his chances in the final - and I suspect that you are - then we will need the return of Perseus in 2012.

The Dems love the idea of McCain being the Republican candidate, he is left of Shillery on immigration and campaign reform.
The Dems. win even bigger if McCain wins the election.
They will have McCain <strike>capitulating</strike> surrendering to their demands under the guise of "lets all work together." And if things do not work out, and we know they won't, they will have a Republican POTUS to blame their failures on. Win Win for the Demmys.
And for that reason, if McCain is the only option, I stay home.

for this I must quote Steve McQueen from the movie
"The Sand Pebbles"

"What happened? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?"

for those of you who have not seen the film, instead of seeing "Cloverfield" you might want to check it out.

The NYT does not want you to vote for McCain, that’s why they endorsed him. They are well aware that you would reject such an endorsement.

However, they also know that McCain is the only one with a chance against Medusa in the final.

If only that were true. It isn't a stunt by the NYT, nothing they said in their endorsement was off the mark or at odds with the way the paper has reported their alternate reality as being. McCain is the most palatable Republican to the Times and they're showing it now. He also can't defeat Hillary, because he draws a lot of his support from Democrats and Independents, who are much more likely to break for the 'change' candidate (in this case a woman) than for an old white man.

“Still, there is a choice to be made, and it is an easy one.”

Yes it is an easy choice. Vote AGAINST McCain The Pain! Maybe when this whole thing is over and this guy is trounced in the vote down to a greasy spot on the voting booth floor, he'll do us all a favor and retire from the Senate for good! He's done more than enough damage, thank you very much!

what can a president do in 4 years that can’t be swiftly undone?

And, let's see...

Roosevelt - yeah, more than 4 years, but Social Security was done in less than 4, and it's still giving great benefits to this day </sarcasm>

Lyndon Johnson's Great Society - medicaid, anyone?

Point being, that in any one 4 year term, yes, a President CAN set in motion something horrendous that can't be undone 'rather quickly', if at all. And McCain, while he may talk the talk on foreign policy, and played for C-Span regarding some earmarks along the way - he'd probably have no problem being 'conciliatory' or 'in the spirit of compromise' about some Democrat dreamed up disaster in the making, and even strongly rationalize going along with it to the american public. Think shamnesty. Think being maneuvered into going along with some health care debacle.

As, for that matter, the rest of the remaining Repubs seem to be, in one form or another.

But lets face it guys apart from pulling out of Iraq or appoint liberal judges, what can a president do in 4 years that can’t be swiftly undone? McCain is pro Iraq and Anti-abortion, all of his other mistakes will hopefully be able to be fixed in 2012.

After hearing Bush praise Bono the other day... I refuse to feel "dirty" for another X yrs saying I voted for McShamnesty. See, I vote for who I think best represents my principals... NOT who I think can win. We all want to support a winner, I understand that. But WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE REPUBLICAN PARTY! I will write in Fred or vote Libertarian. because even THEY are closer to the constitution/solution than Juan McCain.

The NYT does not want you to vote for McCain, that's why they endorsed him. They are well aware that you would reject such an endorsement.
However, they also know that McCain is the only one with a chance against Medusa in the final.

Shouldn't an endorsement from the NYT be The Kiss of Death for a GOP presidential candidate?

I mean, the hack who wrote the piece made it pretty clear they hate Republicans in general, why would they even endorse a GOP candidate at all.

Unless of course they it's Juan's very contempt for the GOP- both the establishment AND rank and file- that makes him so totally acceptable in their eyes.

The Gray Lady is such a vindictive bitch.

The reason we are stuck with McCain in this status quo is that we, as Republicans, have allowed independents to tell us who our "front runner" is. Iowa, NH, and SC all allow this.

WHY?

Future project for conservative Republicans:

Give states that exclude independents the privileges of first primaries and caucuses.

Ya think? How can we make this happen?
I know this is easier said than done. I live in California so I should talk...

Don’t hate J-Mac just because the NYSlimes “endorsed” him. They hate him, but just not as much as the other GOP guys.
I’m a Fred-head. But if J-Mac is the nominee, I say let’s support him.

I fancy that you are mad or at least not a Fred or supporter or if you are you don't care about the immigration issue. By the way all those smile from McCain when Huck was talking about his age were a defense mechanism...If Huck would have said anything remotely negative McCain would have run across the stage and slapped the %&it out of Huck...I' tell you McCain has a real anger managment problem...how do I know...had that problem in the past myself (it takes one to know one)

Well, I gave money to Duncan Hunter and now he's crapped out and supporting Schmuckabee.
I gave money to Thompson, but he was so frigging incompetent that he was dead meat before he ever got out of the gate.
So it's down to Romney, since I couldn't vote for that worthless putrid bastard McCain if he were running against Adolph Schickelgruber.

Some party we Republicans have (or, had)....

We’re doomed.

DOOMED!

Hollowpoint on January 25, 2008 at 2:06 AM

Looks like the other side is already getting ready to ramp up attacks on Romney, and not from the angle you might think.

Like this:

Layoffs are a common result of private equity takeovers, with Bain Capital no exception. Although Romney is credited with helping make Bain the private equity powerhouse it is today, buyout firms are known more for cutting jobs -- not creating them.

and this:

Firms like Bain Capital buy controlling stakes in troubled companies, then revamp them and sell them for a profit — a process that can include management changes and "cost-cutting," often code for job cuts.

Huck's line about wanting a president who "reminds them of the person they work with, not the one who laid them off" might have seemed harsh, but it's nothing compared to the barrage we'll see from the Dems if Mitt is nominated. He's doomed too.

I thought the quote of the day was Mitt Romney “When Republicans act like Democrats America loses”

lan astaslem on January 24, 2008 at 11:19 PM

Blatantly stolen line from teh Fred. And now spoken by a candidate that too often acts like a Democrat himself.

We're doomed.

Conservatives can see bullshit a mile away, we just don’t have to stand and listen to it. Or hold our noses.

Kini on January 25, 2008 at 1:28 AM

If that were true, none of the current front-runners would be in contention right now.
