Open thread: The “And then there were four” debate; Update: New Mitt ad mocks McCain

posted at 7:30 pm on January 24, 2008 by Allahpundit

9 p.m. ET on MSNBC. “And then there were two and a half” would be more accurate. Giuliani’s still in the mix but he’s pulling only 11% on InTrade; Huckabee barely rates. If trends hold it’s Mitt versus McCain for all most of the marbles on Super Tuesday with Rudy and Huck hoping and praying (respectively) for miracles. McCain can expect flak from Romney on immigration and the economy and Rudy on that catastrophe fund he keeps bringing up to try to remind people of 9/11. Will Huck rally to Maverick’s side or let the other two take him apart? Look out for pandering praise for ol’ Fred too to try to win over any ‘Heads still on the fence. Mitt’s web team already has a little bait on the hook. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him attack MSNBC for laughing at Fred’s concession speech last weekend if the opportunity presents itself.

As for what McCain might have waiting for Romney, how about some straight talk about his mad economic skillz?

Video highlights later/during; as always, sound off below. While you wait, shed a tear for former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich as he inadvertently joins the vast right-wing conspiracy. (Ten years and going strong!) This is amusing too, from one of the lefty blogosphere’s leading lights. Follow the comments, as always.

Update: That didn’t take long.

Everybody gets a gun!

Matthews’ head just exploded.

SimplyKimberly on January 24, 2008 at 10:52 PM

I don’t think Paul smacked down McCain. The average voter doesn’t have a clue what Paul asked to judge McCain’s answer against.

jp on January 24, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Bingo.

henzou on January 24, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Chris Mathews is a douchebag. Go EFF yourself you gun hating sissy.

muyoso on January 24, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Huckabee was easily, easily, easily, the best speaker with the clearest answers. The best hope for stopping the liberal McCain is Governor Mike Huckabee.

Kid from Brooklyn on January 24, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Agreed, winner line of the debate.

Yeah, at this point I’m just more willing to give Romney a term in the White House because he is more likely to do the right thing than any Democrat.

Slublog on January 24, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Fair enough. I’m sticking with being a petulant purist this time around.

Hollowpoint on January 24, 2008 at 10:35 PM

I’m with you Slublog, Romney is the best remaining choice.

1. Mitt
2. Rudy
3. Huckabee
4. McCain
5. Paul

Which also happens to be my top 5 in order.. so, I’m probably biased.

henzou on January 24, 2008 at 10:40 PM

I agree with your choices, but not ranking of debate win. The softball tosses make McCain #2. Thankfully Huckabee can’t help being himself, so will gain no traction.

I hear ya. But it came off like McCain saying, “Uh, well, I uh, trust other people for economic stuff.” That’s the point – the theme that Mac isn’t an econ guru.

SkinnerVic on January 24, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Romney – just don’t trust him.
McCain – tried to force amnesty on America, nuff said.
Giuliani – for abortion and gay marriage, unnaceptable.
Paul – some okay ideas, but unpredictable and anti-semetic

Huckabee – solid answers and inspiring. Even though at one point it went 20 minutes before Russert asked Huckabee a question. And MSNBC knew what they were doing, too. Very sneaky trying to manipulate the debate. How come Americans put up with this deceipt? Huckabee still spoke the most eloquent though. He won.

Ooh Andrea Mitchell did not like Joe Scarborough claiming Mitt looked like the one to bring all the conservatives together.

They want McLiar so bad!

SimplyKimberly on January 24, 2008 at 10:57 PM

While McCain was busy trying to pass the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill to legalize 20 million illegal aliens, America sent TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to Muslim terrorist nations such as Iran and Saudi Arabia. Our addiction to oil threatens our very survival. The fact that McCain did nothing about this, and actually supported counterproductive policies that only deepened our foreign oil addiction, is another reason NOT to support him in today’s primary.

Why are any of you even considering this man as President????

SimplyKimberly on January 24, 2008 at 10:58 PM

Scarborough trashing Andra Mitchell for trying to push McCain as THE conservative candidate. HAHAHA!! She’s fidgeting like a bully in the principles office.

csdeven on January 24, 2008 at 10:58 PM

Huckabee has beaten the Clinton machine. He didn’t just win once, not twice, not three times but four times in a statewide election against the Clinton political machine. Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton campaigned against him every time he ever ran and he won.

If we don’t unite now behind Governor Huckabee, we will wind up getting McCain, which is the ultimate dream of the liberal news media.

jp on January 24, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Doesn’t matter if they understood the question – I certainly didn’t understand its significance. But what I certainly saw was McCain squirm and name-drop who he knows rather than answer the question. He obviously didn’t answer the question – on top of the fact he’d already been challenged on his economic knowledge. Paul saw the weakness and asked a question he knew he couldn’t answer. It was the perfect pawn.

Very good ‘debate’. Willard looked very Presidential. He probably has agood chabce for the nom. The only problem, and it’s a big one, was the two A-HOLES – Russert & Matthews. Possibly the two biggest, especially with Russerts size, jerks in the MSM, and that’s saying a lot with all to pick from. That’s probably why they made them moderators.

Mitt Romney 26.3% 21.5%
John McCain 24% 25%

csdeven on January 24, 2008 at 11:02 PM

I’m getting a bit fed up with your baseless attacks. Apparently, in our politically charged and politically correct culture, honesty itself is now out of bounds. I love all people, but not all cultures. For example, Islam is an evil culture. They cannot integrate with the west. Islam sees the West as “God’s Enemy”. The Quran says to kill Infidels, and that would be anyone who is NOT a muslim. We don’t need to look very far to see where the problem is. Anyone who does not hold their fundamental Islamic beliefs is considered an infidel. Muslim Dilemma: Kill inferiors or Convert them? This is what passes for rational debate and discourse in Islam? How sad.

Got it csdeven? Good!!

Now if you think that is bigoted, well you need to wake up. Either give me one credible instance of my being a bigot, or shut-up!

apacalyps on January 24, 2008 at 11:39 PM

I’ve noticed several here agree Gov. Huckabee was the best speaker tonight and won the debate. More and more are switching to a Hucka Hucka burnin’ love. Well done.

apacalyps on January 24, 2008 at 11:25 PM

Comedy gold.

How’s the writers’ strike coming?

Your humble new convert cannot view the YouTube due to his humble internet connection. What is this infidel lobbyist you speak of?

RushBaby on January 24, 2008 at 11:49 PM

Yeah, apacalypse, if you’re watching this, Huckabee’s son hanged a dog. And Huckabee was involved with covering up for the affair.

Entelechy on January 24, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Perhaps that dog had a partner who was supposed to shoot through the rope at the last second, and that partner betrayed him? I suspect that Tuco could provide some useful insight into that kind of scheme. Not from firsthand experience, of course.

ReubenJCogburn on January 24, 2008 at 11:49 PM

This (guy) is a Democrat.

fiatboomer on January 24, 2008 at 11:07 PM

I’m a Democrat?? LOL.

Get a grip, buddy.

I am an Independent, Tempermental, Fundamental, right-wing, radical, Baptist. I’m far right of the right!

Perhaps the most banal argument is to call Republicans “liberal” when they clearly are not. It lessens the real impact of what being liberal means when it becomes a playground insult in the hands of some of you in this forum. You should stick to attacking
liberals on the left and leave serious discussions to others.

apacalyps on January 24, 2008 at 11:51 PM

I can sell all that wine for Gold.

Tuco on January 24, 2008 at 11:40 PM

You’re not only ugly, and greedy, but also shrewd.

RushBaby, I can’t afford to lose you – you’re one of my favorites here. Please don’t fall for the Bravo Sierra of apacalypse.

Entelechy on January 24, 2008 at 11:53 PM

Jeez, I just started on the thread and the troll comes up with

John McCain spent years obsessively fighting to pass the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill that would legalize 20 million illegal aliens. If he becomes president he will get his wish and do it. A vote for John McCain is national suicide. Why is he even an option? Have you people lost your minds??

No.. I’m not kidding.

What is wrong with you???

apacalyps on January 24, 2008 at 7:57 PM

McCain spent YEARS obsessively fighting for the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill? Give me that timeline again?

a capella on January 24, 2008 at 11:55 PM

What’s this? I have offered to turn over my live and my fortune to the Proffet HuckaMoHamBee, and I was counting on my savior to guide me to the ceremonial chipper-shredder. Wherefore art thou, Aploxolype? Why have you not responded to me? Have I not prostrated myself sufficiently before thee?

RushBaby on January 24, 2008 at 11:56 PM

Keep reading, it gets better!

ReubenJCogburn on January 24, 2008 at 11:49 PM

I wish that dog had survived and been like Tuco.

For whoever double-crosses me and leaves me alive, he understands nothing about Tuco. …

Tuco on January 24, 2008 at 11:57 PM

Either give me one credible instance of my being a bigot, or shut-up!

apacalyps on January 24, 2008 at 11:39 PM

Tell the group that those of other faiths such as Mormons, Catholics, Scientologists etc have as much proof that their religion is based on fact as yours is and therefore are equal in validity.

Also admit to the group that you have no standing to make any judgment on any other persons relationship with Jesus.

csdeven on January 24, 2008 at 11:57 PM

Maybe you’re not drinking the right proof RushBaby!

countywolf on January 24, 2008 at 11:58 PM

The Mockery! The Abandonment!

What’s a hopeful HuCKonvert to dooooooo?

RushBaby on January 25, 2008 at 12:01 AM

And CS hits one outta the park!

countywolf on January 25, 2008 at 12:01 AM

Wow, nothing gets by you, huh? Pretty sharp there. Heh.

doubleplusundead on January 24, 2008 at 11:16 PM

I had a feeling it was you. Doubleplusundead has the same impressive wit as Sinistar. While we probably don’t agree with each other on just about everything, I think you’re okay. Ahem, now let’s get back to debating.

Oh, and PS, I’m pleased you decided to switch to Huckabee like the others. Good choice.

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 12:02 AM

You want to know who you are? Huh? Huh? You don’t, I do, everyone does… you’re the son of a thousand fathers, all bastards like you.

Heh, one of my fav Tuco quote.

csdeven on January 25, 2008 at 12:05 AM

You think you’re better than I am apacalyps? Where we came from, if one did not want to die of poverty, one became a Huckapriest or a bandit! You chose your way, I chose mine. Mine was harder. You remember when you left to become a Huckapriest? I stayed behind! I must have been ten, twelve. I don’t remember which, but I stayed. I tried, but it was no good. Now I am going to tell you something. You became a Huckapriest because you were… too much of a coward to do what I do!

Tuco on January 25, 2008 at 12:06 AM

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 12:02 AM

I’m not supporting anyone yet since Fred dropped out.

doubleplusundead on January 25, 2008 at 12:07 AM

apacalyps, I don’t want to lose RushBaby, and I’ll fight you in a duel for him/her. I can see that RB wants to come over your side.

Entelechy on January 25, 2008 at 12:07 AM

Hello? Hello? Alpacalyps? Are you going to take me with you? I’m ready to move into the White House? I’m on board with you, I swear it! I just need to pack a few things, then Let’s go!
