Open thread: The “And then there were four” debate; Update: New Mitt ad mocks McCain

posted at 7:30 pm on January 24, 2008 by Allahpundit
Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

9 p.m. ET on MSNBC. “And then there were two and a half” would be more accurate. Giuliani’s still in the mix but he’s pulling only 11% on InTrade; Huckabee barely rates. If trends hold it’s Mitt versus McCain for all most of the marbles on Super Tuesday with Rudy and Huck hoping and praying (respectively) for miracles. McCain can expect flak from Romney on immigration and the economy and Rudy on that catastrophe fund he keeps bringing up to try to remind people of 9/11. Will Huck rally to Maverick’s side or let the other two take him apart? Look out for pandering praise for ol’ Fred too to try to win over any ‘Heads still on the fence. Mitt’s web team already has a little bait on the hook. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him attack MSNBC for laughing at Fred’s concession speech last weekend if the opportunity presents itself.

As for what McCain might have waiting for Romney, how about some straight talk about his mad economic skillz?

Video highlights later/during; as always, sound off below. While you wait, shed a tear for former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich as he inadvertently joins the vast right-wing conspiracy. (Ten years and going strong!) This is amusing too, from one of the lefty blogosphere’s leading lights. Follow the comments, as always.

Update: That didn’t take long.

My dear bad candy - I love saying that :) - stand by me young man, we’ll be fine by Nov. and you might change your mind. No need to hurry today. Either way, I’ll always like you, even if you don’t vote. I’m a registered independent and no yahoos of any dogma will affect my affinities.

Step aside, Entelechy! My decision is MADE! I’m goin’ to Washington, D.C. with Amphibilips, to see President Huckabee!

When you get to the White House, if you can sneak away from all the Huckapriests there for a while be sure to look for any hidden Gold.

Don’t get any of the cigars though as they may have some bad stuff on them.

I’m convinced! I’m ready to vote for Huckabee, convert to Huckabism, and be SAVE-Deh! How do I get started?

RushBaby on January 24, 2008 at 11:31 PM

First off, RushBaby, read John 3:16 and believe it.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son (Jesus), that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16-17

Fed Up

Fed Up on January 25, 2008 at 12:40 AM

Three of the four top candidates have significant apostasy on the defining issue of social conservatism. Rudy Giuliani is avowedly pro-choice, and even supported federal funding of abortion. Mitt Romney’s flip-flops and thin cover-ups of said are well known. And McCain spent years obsessively fighting to turn tens of millions of illegal aliens into American citizens.

Tuco on January 25, 2008 at 12:49 AM

Yeah, apacalypse, if you’re watching this, Huckabee’s son (allegedly) hanged a dog.

Entelechy on January 24, 2008 at 11:37 PM

No, no… that is not entirely true. We don’t know all the facts. Besides, his son was only18 years old at the time and I don’t think that has anything to do with Mike Huckabee running as President.

Next.

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 12:50 AM

RushBaby, please don’t go there. Consider Mitt Romney, and then Rudy. Don’t even think of the Rev. Huckster. You’re a friendly atheist, as I recall.

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 12:50 AM

Well apacalyps, I adore dogs, cats, and animals in general, and detest people who hurt them. His son aparently not only hanged the dog, but then his father, the governor, covered the affair up. I hurt just thinking of animals in pain. They are in our care and people who don’t respect/love them, earn my wrath instinctively.

What is this infidel lobbyist you speak of?

RushBaby on January 24, 2008 at 11:49 PM

Hey, RushBaby.

Here’s a snippet of an article.

In a tense exchange with an AP reporter on Thursday, Mitt Romney insisted that even though a registered lobbyist is one of his senior advisers, lobbyists do not “run” his campaign.

The claim is part of Romney’s new self-styled outsider message: lobbyists are part of a broken Washington system and Romney has nothing to do with them.

“My campaign is not based on Washington lobbyists,” Romney said. “I haven’t been in Washington. I don’t have lobbyists at my elbow that are arguing for one industry or another industry and I do not have favors I have to repay to people who have been in Washington for years.”

The truth is that Romney is tied closely with many lobbyists. The AP reporter Romney exchanged sharp words with later reported that several Romney aides and advisers are lobbyists. Additionally, as the Nation first reported, Romney has accepted the second most money from lobbyists of any Republican presidential candidate, and has received the most endorsements from lobbyists.

Tell the group that those of other faiths such as Mormons, Catholics, Scientologists etc have as much proof that their religion is based on fact as yours is and therefore are equal in validity.

csdeven on January 24, 2008 at 11:57 PM

Look, I will be more than happy to have a religious debate with you, but I think you’re being a little sophomoric. Just the premise of your argument is flawed. For one thing, it appears you do not understand the history of the Mormons, Catholics, Scientology; you may as well throw in Islam too, cause it looks to me like you want me to say there is more than one way to God. Right away you already got Christianity all wrong because Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) Similarly, the apostle Paul warned us in Colossians 2:8, “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” I think Jesus is trying to tell you something csdeven.

Hey, did you know Israel first became a nation in 1312 B.C., two thousand years before the rise of Islam! That’s right. The Islamic religion began in 623 AD, that about 600 years after Christ sacrificed Himself on the cross. Oh, and Mormonism was invented in the 1800’s in America by a man named Joseph Smith. He invented scriptures which are filled with plagiarisms from the Bible, and fantastical histories of the North American continent and it’s ancient peoples. Not to mention Scientology was founded in 1954 in California. See where I’m going with this? If you want to know the truth about something you need to know the history of it.

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 2:06 AM

I cannot say who is saved and going to heaven. Only God can make that judgment. We try to follow the so-called Golden rule of conduct:

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.” Matthew 7:1

On the other hand, God has commanded us to “judge righteous judgement.”

“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” John 7:24

We should be able to recognize false teachers and “from such turn away.” Matthew 7:15-20

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:15-20

In otherwords, we should be able to judge that which is wrong, in either doctrine or practice, and avoid (or correct) those who are involved, but we must not condemn them - God must do that.

apacalyps, you are indefatigable.

Entelechy on January 25, 2008 at 2:16 AM

You think you’re better than I am apacalyps?

Tuco on January 25, 2008 at 12:06 AM

Not at all. We were created equal.

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 2:17 AM

Well, they say clothes make the man

Naked men have little or no influence on society. -MT

Murphy9, at 2:19, you’re enforcing my statement. Mark Twain must have had Tuco in mind when he said that.

Entelechy on January 25, 2008 at 2:22 AM

I’m not supporting anyone yet since Fred dropped out.

doubleplusundead on January 25, 2008 at 12:07 AM

I get the feeling you haven’t ruled out Huckabee. Good. I hope not anyways. Hey! Don’t let anyone intimidate you on this, not saying they are and you can easily handle yourself, but I strongly believe that most who are knocking Huck do actually think he is a decent guy, the problem is they hate his religion. Anyways, they shouldn’t. Duncan hunter didn’t. My 0.2 cents.

apacalyps, I don’t want to lose RushBaby, and I’ll fight you in a duel for him/her. I can see that RB wants to come over your side.

We want who he/she/it is.

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 2:26 AM

Step aside, Entelechy! My decision is MADE! I’m goin’ to Washington, D.C. with Amphibilips, to see President Huckabee!

apacalyps on January 25, 2008 at 2:29 AM

If McCain were the Republican nominee, millions of Republicans and conservatives will not vote for McCain in November UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. McCain will lose a huge portion of the Republican and conservative base. THAT WILL DOOM HIS CANDIDACY TO DEFEAT. A vote for McCain or any of the other candidates is national suicide, and that’s no exaggeration, we will live to regret it. Huckabee is the only guy that can rally broad support and win it for us.

I repeat that you are adorably delusional. Again, free treatment for 3 hours. After that, the fees are high, but the treatment must be extensive to cure you. It might have to be life-long.

I hear the whispers of the wind
see the stars shine in the sky

And honestly, I have only one thing to say to both YOU and HOTAIR about it.

Move closer to your speakers please.
