Video: Bill Clinton gets red-faced with CNN reporter
posted at 5:49 pm on January 23, 2008 by Bryan
All she does is ask for Clinton to react to something that well-known Democrat operative Dick Harpoolian said. Of course, what Harpoolian said wasn’t exactly nice: He said that the Clinton campaign is injecting race into the campaign.
And with that, we get another shade of red in the face of Bill Clinton.
In an interview with CNN’s Jessica Yellin, Dick Harpootlian, a former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party and a supporter of Barack Obama, said some of Bill Clinton’s recent remarks on the campaign trail were appeals based on race and gender. He said the comments were meant to “suppresses the vote, demoralize voters, and distort the record,” and said they were “reminiscent of Lee Atwater.”
Clinton sharply disputed the charge, and lashed out at Yellin for raising the question.
“You live for this. This hurts the people of South Carolina,” he said. “Because the people of South Carolina come to these meetings and ask questions about what they care about. And what they care about is not what’s going to be in the news coverage tonight, because you don’t care about it.
The thing about this is, while what Clinton says is such transparent nonsense that even Jon Stewart mocks it, and while Clinton’s long-time critics see right through it, it does work with an awful lot of people. People want to see someone get riled up, even if it’s fake emotion, in defending themselves. It’s instinctive — people tend to take the side of someone who appears to be defending themselves from a scurrilous charge. Lots of viewers won’t hear the facts, they’ll just see the reaction and assume that Clinton must be right because he’s so darn emphatic. Never mind that he’s known for lying through his teeth, emphatically.

What a shock that Bubba took six hispanic women to caucus. I never would have seen that coming. ;)

“The thing about this is, while what Clinton says is such transparent nonsense that even Jon Stewart mocks it, and while Clinton’s long-time critics see right through it…”
AND, it takes him about 4 minutes to say it; Clinton can never, ever, say anything quickly. I couldn’t sit through it all.

Not the way he usually likes to get red-faced with a woman.

Why would you post this video? Clinton looks like the victor here and he got to get in his talking points about why black people like Hillary. He also got to talk about how important the people are for the election and that he was sticking up for them.
This is a classic ‘I feel your pain’ incident with Clinton, and I didn’t detect redness or anger in this video. This is what makes Clinton so difficult to beat. This video statement was more compelling for Hillary than anything Hillary could come up with.

Why isn’t Obama smart enough to send one of his staff out to ask one simple question to the media. “Why did Bill Clinton lose his license to practice law in Arkansas”? They can apologize later.

“I did not have race-baiting meetings with that woman, Mrs. Clinton!”
SouthernGent on January 23, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Before, Bill Clinton said he heard about the alleged voter suppression efforts by the union in a conversation he overheard. In this interview he said it was in a conversation he had directly with six Hispanics. Am I right here on the facts?

He was probably trolling for chicks.

It was nice to see Bill stay awake long enough to finish his scolding.

“Lots of viewers won’t hear the facts, they’ll just see the reaction and assume that Clinton must be right because he’s so darn emphatic. ”
Is that so? I always thought of it the other way: if it got under their skin that much then there must be something to it.

He also originally said that he overheard the threats. Now he says that they were reported to him.

Triangulation at it’s best. Victim – Savior – Redress – Your spun up by the opposition – not what people came here for – your fault.
He starts wandering like a lost ball in high weeds until he latches on a way to spin it back and never address the question. She is too intimidated to press the question and given his position, (ex-president), he demands unaccountability in an interview.
He wanders because he is lying and looking for an out – in this case irrelevant farm workers union and the hapless reporter. The Mike Wallace syndrome. He is very dangerous……no focus, no accountability, and willingness to say anything.

He looks so OLD!! And, since I am roughly his age and look a hell of lot better, I think whatever he’s been into these past eight years must be rough on the person. I know he had a triple bypass, but come on, he look simply awful.

I think it is kinda funny that the Clintons don’t seem to be able to control the media machine like they used to. And are obvously not very happy about it.
conservnut on January 23, 2008 at 7:38 PM
It is really ironic that the Dem party has used race for so long and now can’t put that race card back in the deck.

I’m no Clinton fan, but with regard to the MSM .. he’s right.

Sometimes I almost feel sorry for “Media” people.
Damned if they don’t ask tough questions, damned if they do.
MsDollie on January 23, 2008 at 8:35 PM
What a primary season! Never, ever seen or heard anything like this before. I guess the MSM and a lot of people are glad ‘white trash Willy’ and his show are back, instead of the boring Georgie show. Something new and crazy each and every day.
countywolf on January 23, 2008 at 8:44 PM
Funny, at the beginning of the conversation he said the women mentioned the would be there for HIM in November. He hardly mentioned anything about Hillary and it was all about him. Who’s running for president?
poljunkie on January 23, 2008 at 8:47 PM
I don’t understand why he’s still dwelling on voter intimidation in Nevada when she won it.
Buttercup on January 23, 2008 at 9:19 PM
Even if Bill is not alienating actual voters, there’s still a bright side. He’s surely alienating reporters, no?
I don’t think he’s losing his cool for an instant, though; what he says is too carefully parsed to be spontaneous. If he pauses, it’s to figure out how to segue to the talking point of the day. For example, the following bit from a clip on tonight’s news was a very carefully designed double barrel shot. He lowers expectations for Hillary while insinuating the Obama’s race won’t help him elsewhere:
That’s no off the cuff remark.

But he got it right on when he said that once you accuse someone of racism, they can’t wash it off, however innocent they may be.

What an unpleasant man! Do Americans really want to put up with 4 – or 8 – years of this snake-oil salesman in their faces? Blecch!
