Paulnuts to Fredheads: Join us

Pro-life, pro-federalism, anti-amnesty, and bonded to their man by a hero-worship so fanatic they’ve convinced themselves he’s the only man who can save America: It’s a natural match. Except for the war, of course, which is receding as an issue anyway. As the ‘Heads cling to the side of a narrow platform in the Death Star’s air shaft, Lord Vader extends his hand. Will you take it, my friends?
In case not, aside from developing a southern accent, what can Romney say or do to make you feel better about him? Not all Fredheads will be breaking for him but many will, and potentially many more if he can conjure a little Reagan mojo. Ace wants some sort of Thompson-esque “These Things I Believe” address with a little amnesty moratorium sprinkled in to make McCain blink and remind the base of how much he reeks on immigration. Romney can’t give that address, though. He can give a “These Things I Believe Now” address, but that’s the whole problem, isn’t it? If he can parrot the talking points, he can parrot the bedrock conservative principles that allegedly underlie those talking points so how will you ever believe him? He’s better off skipping any more major speeches lest he become known as the guy who keeps having to “define himself” and just start talking about the economy and attacking McCain on immigration and CFR every chance he gets. Find a demon and slay him, Mitt. That’s what you’ll do in the general if you’re running against Hillary. McCain is the Hillary of the Republican primary.
What say you, Fredheads?

Do Fredheads like Nazis? If so, then maybe. :)

According to this, Giuliani gets the lion’s share of Fred supporters, not Romney. This is contradictory to what HotAir posted yesterday. Does anyone know which is correct?
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Go Mitt!
davenp35 on January 23, 2008 at 12:58 PM
First, I’m not a Fredhead; I’m a conservative. Second, Ron Paul’s chances are nearly as improbable as Rudy Giuliani’s, so why even entertain the question?
Do Fredhead’s really want to play this game anymore?
FloatingRock on January 23, 2008 at 12:58 PM
FRED08! No one else is worthy of my vote.

I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you. I am no longer a Republican as of yesterday. I am waiting for an actual conservative to make a third party run, or lacking that, I will write in Fred Thompson, if I feel like wasting a stamp come mail in ballot time.
AZCON on January 23, 2008 at 1:05 PM
I can’t go with Paul. His foreign policy stance is incoherent and dangerous.
I’m jumping into the Romney camp with the loss of our TRUE conservative option, Fred.

Hey, it was a paraphrase.
Admit it, you heard Judd’s voice.
Slublog on January 23, 2008 at 1:05 PM
Romney might consider taking a “I’ve learned from my mistakes; I know where I went wrong, why I was wrong, and I know I won’t the same mistakes again” approach. Try and spin his past into a positive.
Then contrast it with McCain by saying he refuses to acknowledge his mistakes, and he’d make the same mistakes should he be elected.

Don’t be too proud of this RINO lineup of leading candidates you have constructed. The ability to destroy Hillary Clinton is insignificant, next to the power of the Blimp.
BlackCapitalist on January 23, 2008 at 1:08 PM

Sir Andrew on January 23, 2008 at 1:08 PM
Isn’t Mitt the only alternative left in the race? It’s a one horse dog and pony show… so-to-speak.
Griz on January 23, 2008 at 1:08 PM
We already have a Bender in the debate: John McCain.
Romney, of course, is Brian.
And Ron Paul? Carl the Janitor.
Slublog on January 23, 2008 at 1:08 PM
I sense a disturbance in the Force.
And for our next topic: who was a better captain, Picard or Evil Kirk from TOS episode “The Enemy Within”?
Cuffy Meigs on January 23, 2008 at 1:10 PM
No way in any sort of seven hells would I ever vote for Ron Paul. I’d sooner vote for a Democrat.
And, that goes somewhere between the same and double for Schmuckabee.
Had a discussion with my Democrat wife who is supporting Hillary recently, and actually conceeded, that there actually IS a case where I’d vote for Hillary: Somehow, someway, Huckabee gets the nom…and the polls show it is too close to call, much like ‘04 which could have gone either way.
All that being said, I probably have to go with Mitt now, much as that pains me as well. Unless it is a clear case that my vote would not count, and then I may still go ahead with my idea of writing in Fred!
JamesLee on January 23, 2008 at 1:11 PM
Evil Spock; same episode.
lorien1973 on January 23, 2008 at 1:11 PM
LOL. You are nothing if not predictable, AP.
A major realignment of the troops is already taking place as many former Fredheads realize that (1) the Mittmeister is the best we can hope for and (2) the anti-Mormon sentiment may not express itself as negatively on Election Day as some of us (myself included) feared.
This change of heart has also been jump-started by the fact that the Democrat party appears to be on the verge of an all-out race war – especially if Obama takes SC.
Given the Clintons’ past history you can make solid book that Hillary will get the nomination, but at what cost? By that point in time, she will have earned the enmity and wrath of a sizable portion of her base, including hard-core anti-war activists, BDS sufferers, the Kos and HuffPo Kids, and, of course, an awful lot of black voters convinced that their candidate was sandbagged.
Most of the Fredheads (I’d guess anywhere from 60% to 70%) will close ranks behind Mitt’s banner. A few will defect to Huckabee, fewer still to McCain.
I don’t know of any TRUE Fredhead who would sully himself with the drek of a Ron Paul candidacy. The PaulNut blimp is deflating and will soon crash to earth. Oh, the humanity.
Der Fuhrer is quickly headed for der bunker.

Romney needs to explain to me in plain English, no corporate jargon or CEO speak, just exactly what that madatory health insurance plan he pushed upon the residents of MA is all about and then convince me he won’t do the same thing on a federal level. if he can’t I might as well vote for Hillary.
Just A Grunt on January 23, 2008 at 1:12 PM
Heh heh heh…
NemoParticularis on January 23, 2008 at 1:12 PM
I don’t need to hear anything from Mitt. What I need from Mitt is to see, over a period of years, that he is, in fact, a conservative. I need to see that he isn’t a nanny stater. I need to see that he is a champion of the 2nd amendment and the rest of the Constitution and the founding principles of this country.
There’s really no amount of pandering that will win Mitt my support. If he can delete his support for universal healthcare from history along with his disrespect for the 1st and 2nd amendments, then I’ll consider supporting him for President.
But it doesn’t matter what I think because I’m sure Mitt has probably already put together a focus group of Fredheads to identify the key issues which Mitt could fabricate or nuance his position on in order to win their votes.

This Fredhead certainly wont be joining the Paultards.
I’m already planning to register as an independent for the November election. The GOP has made no effort to cater to actual conservative voters, so I see no reason to maintain my affiliation. After Bush’s backing of Shamnesty and the travesty that has been this primary season I’m done.
If someone knows of a third party that actually champions conservative causes will you let me know? Libertarians need not apply.

I hate voting against McCain, rather than for Mitt, but the idea of him killing conservatism wholesale is even worse. Maybe South Carolina is not the kingmaker it once was. Mitt should also give a few speeches in the South. JFK spoke in the South in his presidential run before he spoke in the Northeast. Mitt needs those votes…

We are not unreachable, if you don’t think 9/11 can happen again you are DEAD WRONG (pun intended). Sure Bush is dealing with it wrong but that just means we need to untie the hands of the military and let them do their job. NO POLITICIANS. NO LAWYERS. NO MEDIA THAT CAN’T SHOW A FAIR PICTURE.

infidel on January 23, 2008 at 1:25 PM
I joined the Libertarians back in 1999. I sat out both Bush runs.
I left the Republican party for the simple fact I was tired of always stepping in RINO s&%* and getting it on my shoes. While I wasn’t really happy with the prospects that the Libertarians could actually win POTUS, I none the less found that while the likely hood of us winning was a dream, we were a party that actually followed the constitution.
When the war kicked off in 2003 I found that many of my fellow Libertarians must have thought that controlled substances were no longer controlled.
I was against us going into Iraq, I was all for Afghanistan, and I would have been all for going into Saudi Arabia, but I was against Iraq. What turned me was the fact, something Libertarians don’t digest well any longer, was that while AQ wasn’t in Iraq to start with, they are now. Libertarians were always chanting “What about OBL?” to which I came to believe that if you cannot strike the head of the serpent, then you start chopping at what part of his body is exposed and work your way to the top.
I was excited when the Fred buzz started. I agreed with the man, he reminded me of Reagan, and he was as close to the constitution as any who were running.
I like Ron Paul, but I think he has been pawned. I know for a fact that many of the Paul supporters are in fact leftist/liberal trolls. All they want to simply do is get as many conservative/constitutional Republicans to follow Paul to a 3rd party run, so as to divide the conservative vote (Shades of Perot) and ensure a Democrat election.
So, where do I go? I have no idea. I believe Hillary will get the Democratic nomination, and if McCain runs against her, she will win. I honestly think that any of the Republicans who run against her will lose.
I think either way, we are either going to get Hillary, or Hillary in drag.
As Rush said, maybe we need to suffer another Carter to get another Reagan.
For all of that I can honestly say that I will not return to the Libertarian party and I sure as hell will not for Ron Paul.
RobertInAustin on January 23, 2008 at 1:29 PM
There is no way I could ever vote for Paul. He takes issues (such as the gold standard or war powers act) and twists them so that the current practice seems as insidious as possible. In other words, he takes real issue that we could be discussing, and turns them into “things which you must believe and be scared of”, and which only Dr. Science can help us with. He’s a snake oil salesman, selling a cure to people who think they have cancer, but really only have indigestion. Plus he’s a bigot, or doesn’t mind associating with those who are.
Defense Guy on January 23, 2008 at 1:30 PM

TheBigOldDog on January 23, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Dear Dr. Paul:
Things have come to light about you in this campaign that are repellent and disgusting to people with decency, no matter their party affiliation. I wouldn’t support you at gunpoint.
Get lost please,
RushBaby on January 23, 2008 at 1:33 PM
Yeah, that is not going to happen. Fred will be 73 in 2012. THIS election was the defining moment. Sadly, the definition is “RINO”
ihasurnominashun on January 23, 2008 at 1:34 PM
Au Contrare Mitt is the Hillary of the Republican Party. He has the highest negatives.
John McCain is the Wesley Clark of the Republicans. He doesnt fit the normal mode of their electorate.
William Amos on January 23, 2008 at 1:34 PM
One thing that would greatly help me voting for Romney is if he convinced Fred to be his VP. That would give some assurance that Romney wouldn’t stray to far from the path of conservatism.
RobTN on January 23, 2008 at 1:34 PM
What say me? General McAuliffe has my non-expletive-filled answer – “Nuts!”
Like Colonel Harper did for the Germans, I suspect I’ll have to explain that for the Ronulans. I doubt I’ll get permission, but I’ll ask for permission to do so in proper, “colorful” language.

Out of who is left and for the sake of canceling out a vote for ANY dhimmicrat, I’m voting for Mitt.
Swinehound on January 23, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Oh and one more thing Mitt can do to get my vote. At the next debate when the subject of immigration comes up walk over and smack McCain upside the head when he starts to answer.
I will still write in Fred in the primary and I am not sure I will even participate in the general. Sorry all that crap talk of having another Clinton in the White House doesn’t scare me anymore. We have enough RINO’s in congress now that no matter who is president they are going to continue their pork barrel spending, thumbing their nose at the voters and turning a deaf ear to what Americans are saying. There is that force field around DC, called the Beltway which doesn’t allow for 2 way communication.
Just A Grunt on January 23, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Sry I won’t vote for Ron Paul he has some beliefs that I just don’t support but I am listening to what the candidates have to say and will make my decision before my primary on Feb. 5. I was gonna support Fred but haven’t made up my decision on who to vote for during the primaries. When the general come around I will vote for a Republican no matter who it is.
Nascar70 on January 23, 2008 at 1:37 PM
My plan:
1. Wait passively for my state’s primary. See who’s left on the ballot by then and choose the one I dislike the least.
2. Wait passively for the general election. See who’s on the ballot and choose the one I dislike the least. I’m hoping that will be the Republican, but there doesn’t seem to be any guarantee that that will be the case.
Apathy/Uncommitted ‘08! It’s the ticket everyone else has been voting for for decades–I’m finally in the majority.
aero on January 23, 2008 at 1:38 PM
All he has to do is show he’s always been a man of his word, delivered, or made a good faith attempts to deliver, on his commitments, and then lay out in clear terms his commitments on the major issues.
TheBigOldDog on January 23, 2008 at 1:38 PM
locke, that is extremely well thought out. I can see that coming out in a debate as well. Romney would state that just as you did and then turn to McCain and ask him, “John would you make the same mistake and continue to defend the chipping away of our 1st Amendment rights with McCain/Feingold or have you learned from your mistakes?” McCain would then be forced to either defend his past positions and appear destined to repeat them or he would nuance his stance and forfeit his “straight talk” false persona.
I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR JOHN MCCAIN. EVER. I DON’T VOTE FOR LIARS.

I could support Mitt and/or McCain, simply because I would much rather have either of these men in the White House than Hillary or Obama. I don’t love either choice, but I prefer them both to the party who will generally be working against everything I want our government to work for.
I’d rather sell out than give up. I hope those claiming they will stay home will come to the same conclusion, but I will understand if they choose to make a principled stand.

Romney’s problem isnt that he needs to get to the right of McCain. Its that he needs to get to the left of McCain. Romney’s natural constituience is Country Club republicans and he cant compete with Huck and evangelicals.
If Huck falls out the evangelicals go to McCain and he wins. Mitt either goes left or he loses.

Very simple: With the recession looming, you want a hardcore businessman with an excellent track record for turnarounds, vs. a liberal who wants to introduce absurd new levels of government spending and programs.
Ergo, Romney. It’s the economy, stupid. Social issues will take a back seat to the economy this election, by a large margin.

That’s not correct. If not for Independents and Dems being able to vote on the Republican side in early primary states McCain would be getting little support. If you just look at the Republican voters, they are going in almost unanimously for Romney. I think, I’ve heard a rumor too, that many of the Republican voters have actually yelled out a loud “f*ck you McCain!” upon leaving the voting booth.
And just think, in the upcoming states, voters will all have to be registered Republicans. Hmmm.

Now you know good and well that Northerners that affect Southern Accents are a turn-off to Southerners. It comes off as genuine as John Kerry going duck hunting or Hillary Clinton channeling her inner H-Dawg in black churches.
Romney needs to be clear and specific in his message. In places where he has changed his opinions he needs to defuse the pro-Rudy crowd and Democrats who want to throw around the flip-flop label by explaining how he came to change his view (he’s done it countless times but the Rudy drones have a particularly nasty smear machine). Romney needs to talk up his family values- he still has the starter wife compared the long line of exes that come with Rudy. He needs to talk up his business experience and how his time as a Governor prepares him for international affairs.
Face it Rudybots. Romney is going to be the Northeasterner on the ticket because he has actually worked for the nomination instead of sitting around Florida talking about Super Tuesday. It was an extremely bad decision even if he were to win every single contest in Florida and on February 5th.
