New Rudy ad: Catastrophe’s a-comin’

The unspecified “some” mentioned in the ad is a reference to McCain, of course. Obviously this is a bigger issue in Florida than it is nationally but is it so big that it’s going to decide votes? To my non-Floridian eye it just makes him look desperate, casting about for some quasi-terrorism disaster issue that he can latch onto to get people thinking about 9/11 again. The boss said after the last Fox debate that she’s not even listening to Rudy anymore. Watching this, I feel like I’ve heard his whole rap by now too.
How rough has it been for him so far? This rough.

The man is desparate and embarassing.
pseudonominus on January 23, 2008 at 1:23 PM
Hmmm. Don’t think ad, although Kudos for finally bouncing the Fox News voiceover guy.
Vizzini on January 23, 2008 at 1:24 PM
What else do you expect him to do? He has one route, and one route only to the WH. Can’t blame him for playing his hand, weak though it may appear. Shows how low down the terrorism threat has fallen. The jihadis play politics too.
JiangxiDad on January 23, 2008 at 1:25 PM
The man is desparate and embarassing.
And embarassingly desperate. This is something else. As they say in Pottsville, “He don’t got a chance”. Hell, he “don’t got no ideas neither”.
RWLA on January 23, 2008 at 1:26 PM
Just wanted to let Bryan and Allah know that Rush just agreed with the “boss” on air about McCain.
broker1 on January 23, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Eww. Kind of amateurish. Disappointing.
MikeZero on January 23, 2008 at 1:29 PM
What does that entail?
Vizzini on January 23, 2008 at 1:29 PM
The “others” is a reference to Romney.
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Yawn. This is pathetic. The American public won’t be falling for these scare tactics.
BlackCapitalist on January 23, 2008 at 1:30 PM
When aliens attack Earth, who do you want as President?
brak on January 23, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Not really, though. I was at a major American airport a week ago, and they announced in the terminal that the threat level had been raised to “orange”, presumably from “yellow”. I still don;t know what that was all about.
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 1:34 PM
Damn him for talking about issues that effect Florida voters!
HOW DARE HE.
Vincenzo on January 23, 2008 at 1:34 PM
Rush said that he agrees with MM on the fact that the Drive bys love McCain because it gives them cover to bash conservatives and conservatism.
broker1 on January 23, 2008 at 1:35 PM
You know, Allah, you’re running out of qualified, electable candidates. You guys keep throwing the good ones to the dogs.
I guess Huck will work out great for this country, huh?

When aliens attack Earth, who do you want as President?
brak on January 23, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Kucinich, of course. He’s the only one who can access the proper wavelength.
BacaDog on January 23, 2008 at 1:36 PM
To be fair, its not so much “looming disaster” ad, like Tancredo did, but more of a “just in case disaster hits”. Still, he is a gun-grabbin baby killer.
Jay on January 23, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Maybe, but I don’t think that makes McCain a non-conservative.
Vizzini on January 23, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Rudy suffered from the same affliction as Senator Clinton- An overinflated sense of inevitability. He assumed that he would get the nomination in the name of “electablity” because liberal Democrats deemed him an acceptable Republican. Rudy decided to all but opt out out primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina and THEN he expects to get the nomination when he clearly is only interested in places where one can find New Yorkers in large numbers! Give me a break! If he wanted the nomination, he should have worked for it like all the other wannabes.

BJ* on January 23, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Will there be a Florida debate? If so, you can bet this will come up. McCain’s against it, and Romney says he wants to make sure that money isn’t transferred from “low risk” states to “high risk” states. Ahh…I remember when NYC wasn’t considered “high risk.” I hope Rudy keeps hammering away at this issue.
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 1:39 PM
Now that’s lame.
You thought Mitt’s ad was, well… mediocre?
Rudy is the next victim due to lack of organization.
It’s amazing how one by one these candidates are falling off the wagon.
Mcguyver on January 23, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Aaack. Ack ack, aack AAAAACK!
iurockhead on January 23, 2008 at 1:42 PM
Didn’t care for the voiceover guy. The ad was a little week.
However, I bet you didn’t know this…did you know Giuliani reduced crime when he was mayor of New York!?! And, and…George Will said…oh, nevermind.
CP on January 23, 2008 at 1:42 PM
Rudy is on Larry King tonight
froghat on January 23, 2008 at 1:43 PM
Weak ad….jeez.
Vanbasten on January 23, 2008 at 1:43 PM
Perhaps we will have a relatively peaceful year with the election approaching.
I imagine Islam is voting for the Dems so if they are smart and cohesive, they will keep a lower profile until their candidate gets in. But, like not all Muslims are terrorists, not all Muslims are smart and cohesive. Volatility is their weakness.
What would Sun Tsu do?

SECOND LOOK AT CAMPAIGN STRATEGY
BacaDog on January 23, 2008 at 1:45 PM
Ya know folks, I think it is time to start concentrating on the congressional races. It looks like no matter what happens there ain’t gonna be a whole lot left to vote for for the top slot. Maybe if we can displaced some of these RINO’s out of congress the top spot being filled by an incompetent, inexperiecened, person won’t hurt so bad.
Just A Grunt on January 23, 2008 at 1:45 PM
So John served in the military and was a POW, Rudy was mayor of New York City, Mitt brought the Olympics to Utah, stop me if you have heard any of this before. Oh Yeah and Huckabee is a minister. Time to start telling me something I don’t know.
Just A Grunt on January 23, 2008 at 1:49 PM
Desperate? Mitt Romney is promising to deport 12 million illegal aliens and save the Detroit economy by magically reviving the auto industry. Now, who’s desperate again? Pleaseeeee
froghat on January 23, 2008 at 1:49 PM
If epublicans can retake the House (not the senate) then they can stop anyone even a dem president.
A shift of 17 seats would give Republicans control of the house. Many of those seats are held by one termers.
William Amos on January 23, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Please explain
pseudonominus on January 23, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Tell us all that you thought that was a good ad. Go ahead- I Double Dog Dare ya.
Hollowpoint on January 23, 2008 at 1:56 PM
100% correct. And if Clinton had a gay-American or another woman running against her in the primaries, she’d be in the same dismal position as Rudy. But she doesn’t.
JiangxiDad on January 23, 2008 at 1:58 PM
The craftsmanship leaves something to be desired, but it is a good issue ad for Florida. The governor there (Crist) has helped himself quite a bit by pushing for a National Catastrophe Fund.
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 1:58 PM
As a Floridian, it makes me think he’s trying to run for the Governorship of Florida and not the President of the United States.
Joek7132 on January 23, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Rudy needs a posse.
JiangxiDad on January 23, 2008 at 2:07 PM
Does Ted Olson count?
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Rudy’s got two things going for him right now-
He’s been on the ground in Florida weeks longer than the other candidates.
His decision to focus on Florida has to be flattering to a state that moved it’s primary up for greater influence on the primaries.
How much do Floridians care about hurricane relief?

hahahahaahahhahaahahahahhaah.
JiangxiDad on January 23, 2008 at 2:14 PM
It’s not just hurricane relief, but the effect that the cost of hurricane relief has on property value and insurance costs. It’s not just an “in case of disaster” plan, but one that affects the everyday economy of Floridians. McCain doesn’t want it, and Mitt wants to only include “high risk” areas after consulting with the insurance companies (keeping the insurance costs higher). Giuliani would probably argue that you never know where catastrophe will strike (like southern Manhattan, where insurance costs have hindered the rebuilding and revitalization efforts at and around ground zero) and that the whole country should be covered. The issue will resonate with Floridians.
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 2:15 PM
Do strict constructionists count?
Big S on January 23, 2008 at 2:15 PM
Mitt takes on catastrophes with a chainsaw in his hands!

Isn’t this approach a bit “Gore-ish’?
What if by some unforeseen circumstance things go well for the next four years? It’s like investing in smoke detectors, but not having a fridge, HDTV or washer dryer the way he is selling himself?

Hey Floridians, can y’all retire this old bat and get some fresh blood in the congress. He is a part of that old institution that is a major cause of the congress being the way they are. Life long politicians need to get booted. Don’t talk to me about term limits, that is what voting is about.

In what year, country, planet or universe? Sure as hell won’t be this one this year.
Hollowpoint on January 23, 2008 at 3:03 PM
Hurricanes and insurance don’t just affect our lives after a storm. Many now have significantly higher insurance rates and hundreds of thousands have had our (yes, our) insurance policies canceled.
Good answer.
amerpundit on January 23, 2008 at 3:08 PM
If you can get some gay ones, I think we can work with ya on this one.

This is his plan to save the country — NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!!!
countywolf on January 23, 2008 at 3:17 PM
OK, I just looked at. GREAT AD. Definitely will be effective. Also, a plan like this will lower the lost to the taxpayers e.g the Katrina costs that have skyrocketed
georgealbert on January 23, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Another good answer. I’m starting to think this might just be a good ad.
RightOFLeft on January 23, 2008 at 3:21 PM
Scully from the X files. There has to be some way to get Gillian Anderson back in the limelight durn it. ;-)
Duncan Khuver on January 23, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Brat, that is a fantastic article. What makes it impressive is that the cameras weren’t rolling. He wasn’t making news footage. He was doing work to help a neighbor without any alterior motives in mind. THAT is a rare quality amongst politicians today. In all honesty, its something I never thought I would see or hear about. I didn’t think people like that were the type to run for high political office anymore. Again, thanks for posting that. Its too bad more people won’t ever know about it.
Zetterson on January 23, 2008 at 3:26 PM
Can someone explain to me how this isn’t open advocacy of collectivism? How this isn’t Rudy trying to bribe Floridians with taxpayer dollars?
Mark Jaquith on January 23, 2008 at 3:34 PM
What do you mean by collectivism? That in times of catastrophe we should pool our national resources to help each other out? Sure, it’s open advocacy of collectivism, then. Bribe seems a strong word, too, considering the purported bribe only pays out in the event of a natural disaster.
RightOFLeft on January 23, 2008 at 3:47 PM
“national catastrophe fund”???
And whose money will fund that? Will it fall from the sky?
This guy is a democrat. Maybe a moderate, but he’s still a democrat.
Labamigo on January 23, 2008 at 3:49 PM
It’s amazing to me that we’ve come to a point in American politics where it considered “lame” to tout your record on dealing with crisis. I don’t think it’s the candidates that are the problem this election, it’s the electorate which would find fault with a “sunny, 72 degrees” forecast.
You gotta play the cards you’re dealt, folks.
Jim-Rose on January 23, 2008 at 3:57 PM

Mark Jaquith on January 23, 2008 at 3:34 PM

We already have a natural disaster fund, it is called the general treasury and that is the problem. Rudy’s full plan will limit the billions for which we are on the hook right now and the ridiculous payouts that go to people that build their homes below sea level and in the midst of Hurracaine Alley. Now they get goverment bailouts mostly for free.
Good work by Rudy on this
georgealbert on January 23, 2008 at 4:10 PM
I hate 72 degrees. It must be either 84 or 61 or I’m moving!!
Zetterson on January 23, 2008 at 4:14 PM
Just as a reaction to the ad, as a Floridian it makes me flinch to see shots of a hurricane coming. I’ve seen some of the widespread damage. We had minor roof problems during the fall of 2004, but our lives were chaotic for a couple of months. I really don’t want to see visual reminders.
