Fred’s team blames McCain for pre-Iowa rumors about him dropping out?

I don’t really believe it but anything to stoke the fires of McCain hate is salutary at this point. Recall, we’d been led to believe they blamed Romney. Not so, per Fred semi-insider Stephen Hayes:
[W]hen I asked him last spring about McCain, Thompson said he was sure they would remain friends even after a hard-fought campaign.
“If we do this, we’ll remain friends. We’ll be friends after this. But this is, John will be the first to agree that things that we’re talking about here today are more important than those considerations. We don’t have to sacrifice our friendship to do this. If he’s the kind of guy that he is and I’m the kind of guy that I ought to be, strange as it sounds in this whole world nowadays, we don’t have to sacrifice our friendship to do it and we won’t.”
The reality turned out to be more complicated. Several important Thompson advisers hold McCain sympathizers responsible for circulating rumors before Iowa that Thompson would drop out and endorse McCain after that contest. They believe that news reports based on those claims had the effect of suppressing Thompson’s vote in Iowa and cost him dearly.
Did it? That seems unlikely, but could the possibility that it did be enough to keep Thompson from endorsing his old friend?
That’s a reference to the now-infamous Politico piece. He finished 21 points behind Huckabee in Iowa and 12 points behind Mitt for second place. The last polls in the week before the caucuses, before the Politico story came out, showed him 15-20 points off the pace. Exit question: How “dearly” could it possibly have cost him?

Maybe Fred’s team should blame his lackluster performances at the debates, where he let the other candidates speak for an hour straight and waited until he was asked a question to interject.

I hope this ends the rumors that Thompson was gunning for McCain’s VP spot.
fourstringfuror on January 23, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Mary Matalin fingered the McCain camp for it at the time, if a recall correctly.
2-3% maybe max by idjit voters. Romney lost 4-5 just by leaving SC if the polls are to be believed.

It doesn’t matter one bit at this point other than Fred! not backing McLiar, which is just fine by me.
At this point I want Romney to kick McLiar’s ass all over this country and deny Juan his heart’s desire.

And who does Fred blame for his not showing up in New Hampshire at all? Lack of understanding of the national presidential nomination process? Or is that McCain’s fault too?
Yeah, all these guys make great politicians. . . they take credit for anything possibly good that happens, and assess blame for anything possibly negative that happens. They never seem to own up to reality.
If they ever decide to take a better look at what happened over the last 6 months, they might be able to learn a little something from the McCain camp on how to win a Presidential nomination. That’s why McCain is going to win, not because of his politics.
ThackerAgency on January 23, 2008 at 10:59 PM
oh yeah, and didn’t Fred beat McCain in Iowa? So that’s the one state he points to as the sabotage state from McCain.
I have never been a supporter of McCain’s, but some of the comments and negativity about him after his textbook brilliant campaign make me realize that people don’t want to learn. . . they just want to hate.
ThackerAgency on January 23, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Okay, just thinking out loud here, but what if the intent wasn’t to suppress the vote to overtake Mitt or Huck, but rather to suppress it enough so that Fred wouldn’t gain a sizeable lead over McCain in the third spot. Remember, the narrative was that it was supposed to be Huck pulling off the upset over the big spender Mitt, while the late comer Fred barely limped into the fourth place spot, just behind the maverick, who really didn’t campaign much in Iowa. When Fred started poling better in Iowa before the election, maybe the rumor was floated to keep the margin between McCain and Fred as narrow as possible, still allowing for McCain taking the inside lane going into NH. I always thought it was strange that the Press was focusing so much on McCain when he was beaten by the no-fire-in-the-belly Fred. Just a thought anyway. Heck, it’s probably just the deadFredhead in me talking.
Weight of Glory on January 23, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Probably not much, but what I find odd is if this story is true, why didn’t he include McCain when he was pimpslapping Huck in that debate, or even go after McCain specifically? Supposedly he was pretty pissed off about that rumor.

bnelson44 on January 23, 2008 at 11:25 PM
The only thing salutary about the poisonous anti-McCain propaganda on this blog is that we will know who to blame in November when we are facing Democratic hegemony with the POTUS and Congress in their hands. The bottom line is simple: McCain is the only GOP candidate who can beat Obama in the general. Neither Romney, Huckabee, or Giuliani can challenge in key swing states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania. Romney in particular is WAY off the pace.

Sowing poison among GOP candidates only serves inflated egos, not the interests of Republican voters.

Well, no matter what happens, McCain will be a factor at the convention. He’s already won 2 primaries (that leaves 48 for everyone else to fight over), but he’s going to win several more because he’s already won 2 and he has big name recognition.
So at worst for McCain, it’s a brokered convention and he goes in with more delegates than any other candidate. I hope Coulter, AP, MM, Rush, Ingraham, et al are prepared to start a movement for a third party conservative candidate.
I just don’t know what they will do if they don’t have someone to support.

TX Mom on January 23, 2008 at 11:47 PM
Dude, I’m not apologizing for using snark. I’ve also raked McCain over the coals in lyric (With Huck it’s serial, I never disliked Fred enough to do it.) I’m equal opportunity. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how to snark Mitt when he’s freaking Ward Cleaver whose worst personal incident was to cause anguish to the family dog on a vacation, plus a few idiot-baiting statements here and there that are nearly always ripped out of context.
Fred’s redeeming value was his ideas, which is why he was perpetually my second choice. My problem with him was the same reason his campaign sunk: incompetence. Had he gotten his act together I’d support him over Romney, but from the very beginning it seemed he hadn’t a clue what he was doing, campaign wise, and while many a Fredhead thought his independence was charming, I thought it was a poorly calculated move. It turned out to be only the first in a series of poor calculations. A good campaigner and a good President may require different skills and qualities, but the way it works is that you have to be good at the former to even become the latter.

Ah. As I’ve stated before, I support Romney. Of the remaining candidates, he’s got the best shot. Tancredo endorsed him, so at the very least he’s talked to the man and gotten a good understanding of it.
Huck apparently had a change of soul that required him to plagiarize an immigration stalwart’s plans. He’s made froghtening statements regarding his vision of what the Constitution should be, and he’s a religious demagogue.
McAmnesty tried to shove it down oue throats.
BKennedy on January 24, 2008 at 1:00 AM
Eh, Ca is a long way off. He is staking it all on his Florida run. Interesting strategy. The joker in the deck is the absentee voting that took place before SC and NH.
McCain has the big Mo for the moment. A win for Rudy gives him the new momentum and barely a week for the others to counter it before the multi-state lottery. A McCain win in Fl will send him coasting into the next week and probably the nomination.

Well, good luck with Willard, BKennedy. I don’t think a mormon can get enough votes, especially out west among non-mormons. Anybody but McCain, I guess. I don’t think the conservs are gonna’ vote much in the upcoming general and thereby let the democraps win, so that they hang themselves. Maybe then get a big landslide, ala Ronny 1980, in 2012. Conservs are fed up with Georges’ bunch, including the Sens and Reps. They turned into RINOs. We need new – all the away around.

Which “west” would that be? The West is populated by MORE Mormons than anywhere else in the country. It’s the Huckabee-style moron holier-than-thou evangelical (as opposed to the non-elitist, anti-every religion not their own variety) in the Bible Belt that I’m worried about.
Mitt won Nevada in a landslide, especially among Mormons, but also with everyone else. “The Mormon problem” is a fantastical notion drummed up by religious bigots.

YouTube tells voters all they need to know about Governor Romney, I suggest anyone thinking that he is a Conservative go take a Gander. He is clearly an Opportunist Politician who will do and say anything.. depending on where he is running and what position he is running for. This is one reason this election is going to be Very different because you cant hide from your mouth moving in sinc on Video, available to all at the click of a mouse. I also find it amusing that a guy would change his mind re Infanticide(abortion) because of Stem Cell Research..Did he not ever look into the Horrors of the Practice before the issue of Stem Cell research became an issue? Of course he did.. but it was the only way he could explain his “epiphany” and time it right with his decison to run for President. The Tan Man isn’t fooling anyone who can spot a phoney. Guess hes got a fair chance here though.
LibsREvilDoers on January 24, 2008 at 8:43 AM
Fred’s “team” should be ashamed of themselves. They should walk around with a big “L” tatooed (sp?) on their forehead.
Mitt won the evang. vote because the evang. do not have a problem with his faith, they have a problem with the doctrine, not the person.
The evang. also like Huck, so I don’t think they are, by and large, the most practical people around.

Please leave some kind of substantive proof of this or stop saying it.

I wouldn’t put anything – let me repeat that – ANYTHING, past Johnny McAmnesty.
The Fourth Estate must be slobbering all over themselves, in anticipation of the prospect of his becoming the Republican nominee.

BS. If every Mormon who voted for Mitt stayed home, he still wins Nevada by 5,000 votes. Go check the numbers.
Jeeze!

NOTHING McLame does surprises me, including stabbing his “friend” Fred, in the back. Remember, he is a liberal trying to act like a conservative. That’s why, if he gets the nod, it will put Hillary or Obama in the whitehouse because many conservatives will stay home. A vote for McLame is a vote for the left.

Oh come on, not the “brokered convention” fantasy again.
Fred Thompson is going to win the convention with all of his 8 delegates, 0 wins, 1 second, poor managerial record, and complete divergence from what most Fredheads call the corruption of the Republican party because he’s supposedly the “establishment” candidate?
Keep hope alive!, Fredheads.

Well if Willard is so popular, even outside Nevada where there are less mormons, let’s see how popular he is Tuesday the 5th. I’m really interested to see how a member of the ‘billionaire boys club’ does in all the primaries against the goofball McCain. Even if Willard gets the nom, I don’t see the conservs voting for a billionaire mormon. I also can’t see a big conservative turnout this year at all. People are disgusted with the RINOs and will stay home. Finally, Romney is no Ronny to unite the party and defeat the Clintdumbs or Barracko!
