ESPN suspends anchor for one week over “F*** Jesus” comment

posted at 5:08 pm on January 23, 2008 by Allahpundit

She was drunk at a roast, jokingly taunting a Notre Dame alum about “Touchdown Jesus” when the blasphemy escaped her lips. Enter Catholic League President Bill Donohue, unswayed by the fact that she was obviously kidding, and voila — the token damage-control punishment is duly dispensed. A bunch of people sent me the WND link this morning with notes to the effect of “What if she’d said ‘f*** Mohammed’?” Per the Tribune piece, what if she did? CAIR would have shrieked, ESPN would have tried to ignore them, and if the publicity persisted they’d probably have ended up … suspending her for a week.

Or did my tipsters mean “What if she’d said ‘f*** Mohammed’ in an Islamic country?” In that case, of course, she’d be dead.

Eh, I’m having a hard time caring about this story. Yes, it’s offensive that she said that since it was caught on tape, but no, I don’t think Phil should flip out over it; however, it’s just one week. She’ll survive.

Esthier on January 23, 2008 at 5:11 PM

The ultimate problem is that both Bill Donohue and Ibrahim Hooper are jackasses who make jackasses of themselves on national television, and shouldn’t have this kind of influence in this country at all.

However, I am going to say that if we’re going to really enforce freedom of expression, then enforce it on those who do it to Islam first.

Good ol’ Bill Donohue.

Nice slap on the wrist. Maybe we should get Katie Couric drunk and see what she says. As for the LGF link F–LGF.

No one should drop the F bomb about any deity, just in case. But a suspension because of comments made at a roast? That’s just silly.

Kini on January 23, 2008 at 5:17 PM

She only got the one week suspension after a large bit of criticism. Originally she recieved no disciplinary action whatsoever. Not so surprising from ESPN who has shown its leftist colors fly once or twice before. It’s simiply amazing to me how politically correct they force themselves to be on some issues and not so much on others. Anyone remember what Limbaugh got for his “racist” moment?

ApartforHaShem on January 23, 2008 at 5:18 PM

Not to belabor the obvious, but in an Islamic country, she would have gotten in trouble for getting drunk in the first place.

calbear on January 23, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Oh, brother…Donahue is at it again. I mean, I’m Catholic…but the Catholic League isn’t a prelature of the Vatican here. Donahue is a media junkie, appearing to spout anger at anyone, anywhere. Sometimes he has a point…sometimes he’s off his rocker for airtime.

What Jacobson said was out of line…but there, she apologized, she was drunk, and it was a roast. She’s forgiven.

JetBoy on January 23, 2008 at 5:21 PM

Bill Donahue: Look at me! I’m an attention whore!

This is stupid as hell, but the precedent has been set already, so they’re almost obliged to give the dumbass the suspension.

One was said on the air, one was said (more or less) in private. But Rush also got some time before the hammer fell.

The punishment fit. She was razzing a guy about his alma mater and said something stupid – not looking to purposely insult catholics. No need to fly off the handle.

But, she should not be fired. And I say that as a Christian. Forgiveness is necessary.

I agree if this was about a minority group or Muslims she would be fired. Double Standard???

What do you mean ‘in an Islamic country’? If she said that here or in the UK or in Holland she’d be in hiding with bodyguards or sliced to pieces in the street with a note stabbed into her chest. Need we even list the number of people in the West who have fled into hiding due to blasphemy? Is there any country in Western Europe where someone isn’t under protective custody for saying something unkind about the RoP?

I know this is an absurd case. And yes, Donohue is a whiner. But don’t downplay what would have happened if this nobody ‘reporter’ had dropped the f-bomb on Mohammed.

Outrageously outrageous outrage aside, I think even drunken rants can reveal something about the person ranting. When drunk and given to rant, normal people go on about their ex-girlfriend, their terrible life, or something else mundane.

But those special other people, like this woman and Mel Gibson, let out their other animosities.

Ok, she wanted to target Notre Dame and made bad judgment? Well, I hate Notre Dame football and I especially can’t stand the fans, but it wouldn’t even occur to me to lump in Jesus or a Jesus statue in any sort of rant against Notre Dame football.

We are a free country with freedom of speech. To be fired or suspended or intimidated for saying something is ridiculous. It was a comment meant in jest. Most Christians would have taken it that way. I imagine most Catholics would too. . . but the Catholic League is just as bad as CAIR in many ways.

The announcement that Jesus is not God by Muslims every day is more offensive than saying ‘f*** Jesus’. . . does that mean the Catholic league is going to demand the suspension of all Islamic belief? Niko on January 23, 2008 at 6:14 PM

We are a free country with freedom of speech. To be fired or suspended or intimidated for saying something is ridiculous

Freedom of speech is much deeper than you seem to think it is. It’s a freedom to critize other people’s speech as well. It’s a marketplace of ideas where we must all be free to engage and attack the ideas and speech.

It sounds to me like you’re saying “free speech means being able to say anything, but shut the hell up if you want to respond.” It’s an inherantly contradictory position.

And this free marketplace of ideas demands that those who are persuaded by our ideas be free to implement them. So, not only should Donahue be free to criticise this woman, ESPN must be free to respond to his arguments, or possible free market economic pressures that his arguments may create.

The bottom line is you can’t half-ass freedom of speech, so don’t groan and moan when people speak out against speech they don’t like.

Give it a try sometime and see what happens. Free speech does not mean that there will be no consequences to what you say; only that the government will not deliver the consequences.

As for what she said. The blasphmy is bad. I am also disappointed she couldn’t talk trash without having to resort to the F-word. That’s not taunting; that’s just being a jerk.

She shows a lack of smack talking skills and a lazyiness of the mind. Not even a”

As usual Allahpundit misses the point completely. It’s about the bias, hypocrisy and double standards of the media.

1) ESPN, a news organization who loves to drag people through the mud, covers for their own – they never reported the story or took any action until it leaked out.

2) The MSM has virtually ignored this story and when they have reported on it, never mention what she actually said. Contrast that to how they treat people who make questionable comments about other groups. Compare it to Imus. Compare it to the anchor of the Golf channel.

3) Guys like Donahue exist because of the double standards that exist.

The Notre Dame alum should have just responded, “Ms. Jacobson fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life.”

Mallard T. Drake on January 23, 2008 at 6:38 PM

I suppose I hear worse when my friends get drunk. Still, I’m glad she’s getting a little time out.

AbaddonsReign on January 23, 2008 at 6:39 PM

Freedom of speech refers to the GOVERNMENT not punishimg you for your speech. It has nothing to do with your employers or private authority figures.

I for one think she should’ve been punished just for being drunk at a company function. If she can’t hold her tongue, maybe she should hold the drinks.

Capitana on January 23, 2008 at 6:39 PM

She can safely trash the Lord directly because she lives in a nation that was founded by men who believed in His name! She can use profanity in public against Jesus directly because this nation’s laws were based on the Bible she spits on. Everything she has from her career, her popularity, her income is directly as a result of people that came before her who have worked, sacrificed, labored and died because they believed in a Lord Who’s Name is above every other Name. That Name that she spit on,, Jesus.

Her freedoms, her rights, her property ownership, all as a result of living in a nation founded by men and women who themselves came from a continent shaped in large part by the same Name, a people who believed in liberty because of the liberty given them by that same Name she publicly profanes!

TheBigOldDog on January 23, 2008 at 6:36 PM

Kelly Tilghman said something stupid when she mentioned that the young golfers trying to catch Tiger should “lynch him.” She obviously didn’t understand the connotation of the word lynch to the black culture. However, she apologized on air to the viewers and to Tiger after privately apologizing to Tiger. Tiger was okay with it and said it wasn’t an issue with him. He knows Tilghman and knows she isn’t a racist. A little clueless maybe, but not a racist.

The management at Golf Channel were going to announce a suspention of Tilghman, but then the “Reverand” Sharpton showed up demanding she be fired and who knows what else. The GC delayed their announcement a day or so to distance themselves from Al and suspended Tilghman two weeks w/o pay. Once Sharpton realized the story had no legs e.g. no media and cameras, he disappeared back into his hole.

My God, what is happening here folks? Get over it.

Jake-the-Goose

Next time you’re out to dinner with your family and I’m drinking, I’ll just come over and tell your wife and daughter how much I want to f**k them. Hey man, its free speech, get over it. Where does it stop?

volsense on January 23, 2008 at 6:51 PM

If she had said Mohammed everyone would be saying “this reeks of Sharia!”.

crr6 on January 23, 2008 at 6:52 PM

Words mean things

I agree completely, and that’s why I find it asinine to see a word like “bigot” overused so easily.

I’m pretty sure almost anyone would believe that saying “F— your God” is a categorical statement of intolerance.

Nessuno on January 23, 2008 at 6:01 PM

1. She wasn’t talking about Jesus Christ, Son of God. She was talking about a sports team.

2. She apologized for saying it.

It seems to me that the more intolerant position is the one that cannot forgive.

I was referring to being dead.

ronsfi on January 23, 2008 at 6:13 PM

Yes, ronsfi, Christians want the woman dead for making a drunk comment. You can tell by the way people in this comment section are calling for her head, offering money in reward for the deed’s completion.

To those who need the satire tag for Onion videos, the above was sarcasm.

volsense on January 23, 2008 at 6:51 PM

Seriously?

1. If you apologize afterwards, wouldn’t you expect the wronged husband to get over it?

2. Do you feel you should lose your job over that comment?

Esthier on January 23, 2008 at 6:57 PM

I recall Eric Cartman saying this, at an award ceremony after he found out he wasnt getting his platinum record

Esthier on January 23, 2008 at 6:55 PM

Wrong! How about actually reading the story before commenting?

Jacobson, reportedly intoxicated, was speaking at a celebrity roast in Atlantic City, N.J., when she unleashed a profane tirade, saying, “F— Notre Dame,” “F— Touchdown Jesus” and finally “F— Jesus.”

Did you defend Mel Gibson too?

TheBigOldDog on January 23, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Not one person here has yet to figure out the reason of why she said this in a joking manner to a Notre Dame graduate at a roast.

Dana Jacobson is a graduate of Michigan, 1993.

TheBigOldDog on January 23, 2008 at 7:01 PM

I’m not defending her. You cry about people not reading the whole story, well, did you read my first post?

I’m just saying that she isn’t a bigot for her remark. She got carried away talking about a sports team. If you can’t get over this, your life will be very difficult.
