Duncan Hunter endorses … Huckabee? What?

Mr. Border Fence is backing a guy who accused opponents of Bush’s immigration plan of nativism? Two days after Fred drops out because he can’t pull enough conservatives to beat John McCain?
Dude?
“I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail,” Huckabee said in a statement. “Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China’s emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America’s industrial base.
“Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee’s candidacy that compels my endorsement,” he added. “Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well.”
The man who wants his foreign policy driven by the golden rule is the man to tame the Chinese dragon?
Am I hallucinating?
Update: What’s even odder is that Hunter’s often touted as a SecDef in the next Republican administration. Endorsing McCain, the frontrunner, would have helped him in that regard and given Maverick a boost with conservatives. Instead he throws his endorsement away on someone who’ll be done by February 6th.
I guess he just likes the guy.
Update: Joe Carter, Huck’s former research director, e-mails to say the nativism quote is being taken out of context:
Here is what he really said:
“I do believe some of it is driven by racism or nativism,” he said of the opposition within his party to Mr. Bush’s view that illegal aliens should not be deported but rather fined and eventually allowed U.S. citizenship.
When asked directly by the reporter if there wasn’t some xenophobia behind the opposition, Huckabee made the error of telling the truth. Having talked to more than a few anti-immigration extremist while on the campaign trail, I can attest that there is a segment of voters that is all for “throwing out the brown people.” Is that the majority of Republicans? Of course not. But it’s silly to pretend that the GOP doesn’t include its share of extremists.
Fair enough. Huckabee’s record on immigration goes way beyond that quote, though. Trot through Lonewacko’s archives sometimes and drink it in.

I would support whoever is most consistent with my belief about where the country should be headed. If it was out of Lieberman and Obama, I would support Lieberman because although Obama says he is a Christian, his extreme liberal viewpoints are not consistent with that. Lieberman would be more consistent with what I believe, and therefore I would support him over Obama.

That is completely false. Have you taken a survey to verify the average Huckabee supporter is obnoxious and arrogant?
I said little or nothing about this election over the last month or so. But I have had enough of his gutter campaign against Huckabee. This is just trying to set the record straight.
You make alot of assumptions which are just plain wrong.

PopularPolitics, this is what you wrote. I appreciate that you would vote for Lieberman over Obama, but it doesn’t jive with your previous statement. But I could care less.
The fact is that you Huckabee supporters are just out of touch with reality. You have Harald over there calling me a muslim anti-semite because I don’t like Israel. You have apocalyps over there babbling about how Mormons aren’t Christians because they believe in a few extra sacred texts. And then you have the whole lot of you Huckaschmucks blathering about how Huckabee is the most conservative candidate out there.
You guys are all frickin’ nuts. And the only thing I can see that connects you all is that you’re all diehard Christians.
HebrewToYou on January 23, 2008 at 7:21 PM
Again I will set the record straight:
Huckabee is:
pro gun rights
pro human life amnendment
pro affirmation of marriage
pro increasing the size of the military
pro abolition of income tax and has signed no tax raise pledge
pro decreasing the size of entitlement programs(smaller gov’t)
pro securing border and opposed to amnesty
The man is not a liberal at all.

I personally have no idea about this. I do think Huckabee is a decent man and the best candidate for the Republican nomination. I also believe he fears the Lord and the Bible says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” Proverbs 1:7
Those are my own personal feelings.
However, what you’re doing is building up a straw man and tearing him down, with this Huckabee is God’s Chosen Candidate argument. Pretty lame.

opposed to amnesty? Since when? What does “the Divinity of Jesus” have to do with him “walking the Earth spreading His message?” Unless of course, you believe Jesus just sat around and did absolutely nothing his whole life. Are you aware of a group of people such as this, who believe in Jesus, but believe he didn’t walk the Earth spreading His message? Which group would that be?
Really? I could sware you’ve spent the last several hours on this very thread telling others what their God is about. It seems you don’t believe it’s beween us and our God. It’s almost as if you believe it’s between us and HebrewToYou.
Again, I say look in the mirror.
Actually, you claim to be right on pretty much everything religious, all while claiming you’re not a religious person. Weird.
And you know this because why?
Isn’t it ironic how you just got finished saying that you don’t claim to be right about any religious matter, and in the very next paragraph you state that it doesn’t serve any purpose for Christians to claim how great God is? Are you sure? How?
I can just see you now, giving Jesus Christ an “earful” for preaching how great God is and telling him it’s not going to “serve any purpose.” Heh.
Yet you’ve been preaching to us for the last several hours about your beliefs regarding God.
Yet, here we are. You telling everyone else what to believe and how to go about it.
How about you just go practice what you preach?
Yeah, I remember reading about how Jesus kept his faith all to himself. Thank God for that, right?
Oh wait. Hope that didn’t offend you.

After the flood G-d decided he wouldn’t try to kill EVERYTHING again. He decided to just destroy a couple cities and all their inhabitants. G-d’s an angry sonnuvagun. He ain’t no loving creator.
Remember, this is the same creator who told the Patriarch of Judaism to offer up his son for sacrifice. He may have chickened out at the last second, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a sadistic bastard.
G-d is to be feared.

I don’t hate the Huckster. If I knew him personally, I might even like him as a person.
I just think he is a political phony, a liberal posing as a Conservative. If it wasn’t for his actual record prior to his presidential candidacy, I could maybe believe his current positions.
But even then, I wouldn’t think he is smart enough to run a diverse nation in a very complicated, dangerous world.
There are no ‘waterworks” involved. I just miss the discussions of old on Hot Air which were mostly based on substance; where you could appreciate the intellect of even those you disagreed with.

Because Jesus, Gregor, was a Jew. There’s nothing that leads me to believe that anything written long after his death bears any resemblance to what his life was actually like. For all I know his message was that of Judaism, yet I don’t see you Christians believing what my family believes.
Then you haven’t been paying attention. My one common theme is that religion is a PERSONAL relationship with G-d. Which is why I hate Huckabee and his supporters, goobers who wear their religion on their sleeve and preach about the greatness of G-d to others who care not.
You folks don’t know snot about Jesus. All you know is some fables written down about his life years and years after he died. It’s great that you folks use his life as inspiration to lead moral lives, but don’t act like you know what Jesus actually preached. Chances are that Jesus was just a guy nailed to a cross for saying we should be nice to one another. The preaching is something your CHURCH instructs you to do. It ain’t necessarily Jesus.
Actually, yes.

Now we see it!! You talk of holy things, yet your words expose you. You are a fraud.
“I (God) will bless them that bless thee (Israel), and curse him that curseth thee” Genesis 12:3
Those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse her will be cursed. God will judge the nations based upon their treatment of the Jewish people.
“For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I (God) shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.” Joel 3:1-2

The High Reverend Huckster is not a conservative. He is a theocrat.
The High Reverend Huckster does not want to lower taxes. He has in fact raised them when he had the chance.
The High Reverend Huckster might want to keep the second amendment intact. Bbut that is so he and his son can shoot dogs or little birds.
The High Reverend Huckster will never seal the border. His “soul” will never let him seal the border.
The High Reverend Huckster will never win the war in Iraq and on terror. He is too stupid.
So yes, you have gone off the deep end if you believe any of that malarkey from him.
MB4 on January 23, 2008 at 8:32 PM
He supported the Bush tax-cuts from day one. Go to YouTube and watch Huck’s first Meet The Press interview back in Jan of ‘07. He talked about agreeing with Bush on most things, and disagreeing with little.
He does believe in lower taxes, but if a state is in dire need of a road revamping across the state, and also an education crisis, what do you do if not raise taxes to help the state’s needs? Huck has said that tax-raises at the fed level are not necessary, and has signed a pledge to ease the concern.
I trust Huck a heck of a lot more than I trust Romney, who is a political opportunist of the most obvious and severe sort. He is a panderer to the liberals when he needs to be, and to the conservatives when need be. The guy does not seem to have a strong core. He’s a malleable, soft, mushy guy who will change his beliefs or political positions on a whim. I would NEVER assume this guy is a genuine conservative.

Think about that for a second. If true, that would mean he smokes cigars because why? It looks good? It makes him feel powerful? Why exactly? If you’re not going to inhale it, why do you smoke it? But that’s not what’s important. What’s important is that he makes the choice to “not inhale” but then FORCES others to inhale it instead. Well now wonder he’s so healthy. It’s too bad he doesn’t have the same consideration for others.
How obnoxious is THAT?!
Gregor on January 23, 2008 at 8:35 PM

Why are you responding to your own comment? It’s no longer a secret you’re both the same person.
Gregor on January 23, 2008 at 8:39 PM
Cut spending!
Stop making excuses for Huckabee.
HebrewToYou on January 23, 2008 at 8:39 PM
But what % are supporting other candidates. I’m sure Huck has the most %. And even if he doesn’t, then this just goes to show that he doesn’t evangelical-only support.
popularpolitics on January 23, 2008 at 8:35 PM
now… that just doesn’t make any sense. is it me?
jerrytbg on January 23, 2008 at 8:40 PM
Actually, considering how he hasn’t won a primary since Iowa is really shows that his only support is coming from Evangelicals. But even they are wising up.
HebrewToYou on January 23, 2008 at 8:40 PM
How come the mailto links?
apacalyps on January 23, 2008 at 8:41 PM
Like I said…True conservatives will take a good second look at Huckabee and join the movement now that Duncan Hunter endorsed him!
Admit it…you like Dunc and know he is a true conservative.
Also admit that everyone of you always used to say “Mike Huckabee is a great speaker and would make a great VP” before fred joined the race!

I tend to agree - they might even be one and the same, or at least two of the same, or whatever. In any event they’re nuts and their guy won’t make it.
Just listened to the CA latest poll results and they won’t make tommylotto happy - Rudy has imploded from 37% to the teens. CA is not a win-take-all state but these stats are significant, due to such a large drop.

Apacalyps and I are not the same person.
Great minds just think alike.
HaraldHardrada on January 23, 2008 at 8:44 PM
You’re a self-hating Jew then. A fraud. A phony. A liar. You know nothing of the Bible and the significance on May 14, 1948. For those who don’t understand the Bible well, let me tell you this man is a con.
apacalyps on January 23, 2008 at 8:44 PM
What are you talking about? Do you think I open your children’s bedroom windows and puff on a cigar?
You have really gone off the deep end.
You appear to be the OBL of anti smoking.
LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!!! There may be someone smoking in your neighborhood!
MB4 on January 23, 2008 at 8:45 PM
Hey Gregor, I am all for ban on driving automobiles, you hypocrite. See, I am tired of drivers infringing upon my right to breathe clean air too. I could never understand why intelligent human beings purposely drive cars and trucks which expel carcinogenic particles (particularly diesel soot) and ingest the cancerous materials into their lungs.
I hate to say this but you are the one who intellectually deficient. I am sorry you are from California, the place that bans smoking, 50 cal rifles (yet the governator owns a tank) and foie gras, because I too am from California and you fit the liberal sterotype to a “T.”
I will stop smoking when you stop driving. Fair enough?
petit bourgeois on January 23, 2008 at 8:46 PM
That would mean that someone must have got more than one ID. I would not think that a sophisticated web site like this would allow that.
MB4 on January 23, 2008 at 8:48 PM
This is all MB4 has been trying to tell you for hours.
JiangxiDad on January 23, 2008 at 8:49 PM
And yet I love myself. Funny, that. And how can I make this more clear: I AM NOT JEWISH. I am a Hebrew to You. Cultural ties to the people descended from Abraham. That is all.
LoL. Okay, apacalyps. Yet you’re the one who continues to call me a Jew despite my complete lack of belief in the religion. You may love Israel; that doesn’t mean I have to. I respect their military victories and acknowledge their right to keep the land won. But I disagree strongly with any nation founded on religious identity.
It’s that simple.
HebrewToYou on January 23, 2008 at 8:49 PM
You’re the comp. guy. Is it easy to stop?
