Duncan Hunter endorses … Huckabee? What?
posted at 3:37 pm on January 23, 2008 by Allahpundit
Mr. Border Fence is backing a guy who accused opponents of Bush’s immigration plan of nativism? Two days after Fred drops out because he can’t pull enough conservatives to beat John McCain?
Dude?
“I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail,” Huckabee said in a statement. “Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China’s emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America’s industrial base.
“Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee’s candidacy that compels my endorsement,” he added. “Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well.”
The man who wants his foreign policy driven by the golden rule is the man to tame the Chinese dragon?
Am I hallucinating?
Update: What’s even odder is that Hunter’s often touted as a SecDef in the next Republican administration. Endorsing McCain, the frontrunner, would have helped him in that regard and given Maverick a boost with conservatives. Instead he throws his endorsement away on someone who’ll be done by February 6th.
I guess he just likes the guy.
Update: Joe Carter, Huck’s former research director, e-mails to say the nativism quote is being taken out of context:
Here is what he really said:
“I do believe some of it is driven by racism or nativism,” he said of the opposition within his party to Mr. Bush’s view that illegal aliens should not be deported but rather fined and eventually allowed U.S. citizenship.
When asked directly by the reporter if there wasn’t some xenophobia behind the opposition, Huckabee made the error of telling the truth. Having talked to more than a few anti-immigration extremist while on the campaign trail, I can attest that there is a segment of voters that is all for “throwing out the brown people.” Is that the majority of Republicans? Of course not. But it’s silly to pretend that the GOP doesn’t include its share of extremists.
Fair enough. Huckabee’s record on immigration goes way beyond that quote, though. Trot through Lonewacko’s archives sometimes and drink it in.

Wrong again. Hunter was against UNFAIR trade, as practiced by China’s currency devaluation against our dollar and unfair exemption of VAT from all trade equalization.
You do want equal and fair trade, don’t you? Read the sad history of 136 countries adding a VAT after France got it exempted from GATT.
That being said, this former Hunter delegate is now supporting Romney – the last possible candidate that might veto Shamnesty ’09.
I have contributed, in order, to Tancredo (just to keep the issue front and center), Hunter, Thompson – maybe I should stop contributing.
I am ill at this news.

Except I’m starting to wonder if we aren’t “the base” anymore. The righty blogs liked Fred, but he doesn’t get enough votes to stay viable. The righty blogs hate Huckabee and McCain, but they are the frontrunners. I used to think I was the quintessential member of the base, but now I’m wondering if I’m not some sort of outlier to the Republican party.

We are outliers, as this primary season has shown all too clearly. Staunch all-around conservatives are the real “RINOs” now. We call ourselves Republicans mostly because there’s nowhere else for us to go. We vote Republican because they’re closer to our beliefs than Dems are. But we’re conservatives, not Republicans, and we’re being left over here on the right all by ourselves.

You would recommend we buy gifts from China?
Read this sad story. Hunter was for FAIR trade and an equal playing field. You do realize that China keeps its currency devalued from our dollar, instead of letting Econ 101 rules prevail? And do you approve of 137 countries getting a special exemption for their VAT, unlike any other tax, in trade agreements?
That said, being a FORMER Hunter delegate on illegal immigration issue only, I am resorting to Romney – our very last chance to veto Shamnesty ’09.

More like this if Juan Plantation McVano becomes President or if The High Reverend Huckster becomes President and reverts back to following his “soul” –
Mexican gangs in Los Angeles, like Florencia 13, are waging a bloody campaign to drive blacks from neighborhoods
Terry Anderson is angry. From his KRLA-AM radio perch in Los Angeles, the black talk-show host thunders, “I have gone on the streets and talked to people at random here in the black community, and they all ask me the same question: ‘Why are our politicians and leaders letting this happen?’ ” What’s got Anderson—motto: “If You Ain’t Mad, You Ain’t Payin’ Attention”—so worked up isn’t the Jena Six or nooses on Columbia University doorknobs; it’s the illegal immigrants who allegedly murdered three Newark college students last August. And when he excoriates politicians for “letting this happen,” he’s directing his fire at Congressional Black Caucus members who support open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens. “Massive illegal immigration has been devastating to my community,” Anderson, a former auto mechanic and longtime South Central Los Angeles resident, tells listeners. “Black Americans are hit the hardest.”

The political climate doesn’t exist to eliminate these programs so we should find ways to make them more suitable to our view of what’s best for the country.

We are likely in a recession. Since the market is a leading indicator, the drop for around 14K to about 11.6K has priced in the slowdown that began at the end of 2007. Hopefully it is mild and only lasts for the first 2 quarters of 2008, but there is a pretty big mess that needs to be worked through domestically and internationally.

I took my kids to Universal Studios in Orlando and it was absurd! Every time we stopped to check a map, sit on a bench, munch on some snacks, or use the restroom … we were surrounded by smokers. This is at a children’s theme park!

On the Democrat side, both frontrunners are current US Senators. On the republican side there is 1 Senator 1 Governor and 1 Mayor. Congress’ job approval ratings are beyond pathetic and the last few presidents have been governors. Former NYC Mayor Rudy would bring something different to the table. What we need is a leader that isnt all consumed with political ambition, that’s what we liked about Fred. Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina was all about style over substance. And if there ever was a candidate that was suited to run with Thompson as veep, it’s Rudy.
And please, Now really isnt the time to try to paint the office of the President as some all powerful dictatorship. One of the basic principles of conservatism is limiting government. As some others have pointed out, none of the candidates are going to take your guns or outlaw abortion. It is not in the countries best interest to have a president that agrees with you on every single issue. But one that considers the interests of the nation as a whole. Many of the pixelpunching pundits here are acting alot like the liberals we all loathe. Single issue hacks and pessimistic hatemongers. Duncan Hunter on Willard Romney’s chinese connections
“Presidential candidate and current Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter, today called on former Governor Mitt Romney to send a “clear statement” to the leadership of the company he founded, Bain Capital, to terminate a proposed business deal with a controversial Chinese corporation seeking to acquire U.S. defense contractor 3COM.
Bain Capital is attempting to form a business arrangement with Huawei Corporation, a Chinese corporation founded by an officer of the Peoples Liberation Army of Communist China, which faces allegations of assisting Saddam Hussein in the targeting of U.S. aircraft and in helping the Taliban develop surveillance equipment.
“I am extremely concerned that Governor Romney’s company would tout a highly suspect Chinese corporation as a strategic partner,” stated Hunter. “Forming a business partnership with a corporation known to have direct ties with terrorists and dictators while, at the same time, openly seeking to acquire a major U.S. corporation that performs vital cyber security work for the Department of Defense, can only be characterized as irresponsible.”
A resolution has been introduced in Congress, H.Res. 730, which states; “The preponderance of publicly available evidence clearly suggests that as currently structured, the proposed transaction involving Huawei threatens the national security of the United States and should not be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States .” A copy of this resolution is provided.
Hunter stated in his letter to Governor Romney, “…while it is true that you no longer control Bain Capital, the contributions you have received from its principals as its founding member indicate that your influence within the company remains strong.
“Further, while the Committee on Foreign Investment has yet to rule on the Huawei transaction, this corporation’s connection to Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and the Army of Communist China should clearly disqualify them from becoming, in the words of your former company, “a strategic partner” in acquiring a U.S. firm such as 3COM, which performs vital cyber-security work for the U.S. Department of Defense.
“This letter is a request that you immediately issue a statement of policy that this transaction should be terminated on the grounds of national security. Please let me know what you intend to do.”

I’ll let you be the guy to inform the electorate that all of their savings (that aren;t in tax-deferred accounts, that is) are going to be taxed a second time to the tune on 23%. For the middle class, that’s a cumulative tax rate near 50% for saved income during and after the transition. Have fun selling that!

I just saw this story, and I feel like having a John McEnroe tennis moment:
Mr. Hunter, YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!
Really, how many of you saw that coming? My regard for Duncan just went thru the floor, thru the basement, and settled somewhere down with the sewer seepage.
Blecch.

Thank you. I had skipped all of that Bain stuff. I shouldn’t have. HH. When was that from?

Duncan Hunter is a man of exceptional judgment, hence his endorsement of Governor Huckabee. Endorsement shouldn’t be about what kind of position you can get an an admin., it should be about who you truly believe is the best man for the job.

Its time for some intellectual discourse in the Republican party. Conservatism has intellectual roots that no candidate is willing to discuss, what remains is just genuflection to the Reagan legacy. The “compassionate” Conservatism of Governor Huckabee and Bush 43 share its intellectual foundation in the early 20th century progressive-era. I may call myself many things, but that doesn’t make me so! Just because you are conservative doesn’t make you a Conservative!

You do realize that about 99.99% of the “toxic chemicals” that you are forced to breath when you walk down the street are from cars, SUVs and pickup trucks?

Well, HH said that he lives/works in LA. That should put him close to the great Cedars-Sinai hospital. It’s one of my main clients. I can help with the recommendations.
Also, HH, your work, the specific fundings, coincide with your Huckabee ‘fair tax’ and ‘energy independence’ mantras.
Maybe so, and in the midwest, but here in CA no one smokes in public – which begs the question, where do you smoke HH?
HH, on the national ban, you say Huckabee is not for it – go by what he said before, not by what he says now. Now it’s all promises, promises. Check his record.
On the Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton clusterHuck, don’t forget the obvious one, George P. Bush, Jeb’s son, the conservative (deceased from own piloting goofup) Kennedy kid.
