Video: Mitt Romney reacts to Fred’s exit

posted at 4:16 pm on January 22, 2008 by Bryan

Fox had all kinds of technical trouble with its Campaign Carl Cam, but the gist gets through: Mitt lauds Fred’s commitment to the entire Reagan coalition and expects, or rather hopes, Thompson’s exit to benefit his campaign. I missed the first few seconds but caught most of it, including the glitches. I left Sheppard Smith’s reaction in, just because.

Having had contact with several of the campaigns over the past several months, I have to say that today shows us in stark contrast the difference between a campaign that works and ones that don’t. Within minutes of Thompson’s exit, the Romney campaign had a reaction statement up on its web site. They have probably had it ready to go since Saturday night, and just pushed the publish button once Fred officially dropped out. You can either chalk this up to money or management or some combination of both, but it often comes down to just wanting the job enough to make a serious effort at getting it and building the kind of organization it takes to become competitive.

Early in the Fred Phenomenon I tried and tried and tried to lock in a sit-down with Fred to talk to Michelle on camera. This was last spring and summer, before his official announcement that he was even jumping in, when he lived in McLean, VA and wasn’t running around the country campaigning. We were offering time here on Hot Air to make his case and show his stuff. But we could never get a straight answer out of the campaign. And this was in spite of the fact that I was promised more than once that we would get an interview, it was just a question of timing and logistics. It wasn’t a case of getting the runaround. It just, from the outside, felt like there were an awful lot of moving parts that hadn’t been attached to a functional machine yet.

In retrospect, that was a telling sign that there was chaos at the top of the effort that wasn’t likely to go away. Later on that version of the Thompson campaign imploded and v2.0 came out. It worked better, but by then Fred was already so far behind in every way that he needed everything to break his way just to become competitive. Unfortunately, that never happened. The Huckaboom took everyone by surprise, and now McCain’s surge is the campaign shock story.

I’d like to have seen Fred Thompson mount a serious campaign, make his case, punch more hippies and keep the GOP listing to the right. Fred Thompson was consistently the best debater, but it takes more than debate performances to become president (conversely, poor debate performances shouldn’t be enough to write off a good candidate either, though debates do matter). In order to win you have to show that you know how to build the organization that it takes. Fred Thompson never showed much interest in that part of the race, and that’s part of the reason why, in spite of his being the most interesting and charismatic conservative of the campaign, he’s taking the early exit.

Update: SeeDubya experienced the Fred campaign’s disorganization up close and personal too.

He’ll be McCain’s running mate, as was probably always intended.

Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are the only three on the GOP side who are “PRESIDENTIAL” in their words and demeanor.

The others have been disgraceful more than once and would be a very bad representative of the GOP and the Country.

I saw something on the tube about Fred when he started his campaign late and was arriving at an agricultural fair out west in a golf cart. He was the only everyman at the fair with his own golf cart and wearing Gucci loafers. Gucci loafers at an agricultural fair are a one time wear thing.

The Fred would make a good VP. He and Mitt could do good cop/bad cop really well.

A good President has executive management experience, the sort of experience in which he has led many people in a successful endeavor over the course of a long period of time. Romney has that. Thompson does not. Thompson has his strengths, but they just aren’t enough to suggest that he would make a good President.

I know you’re upset, but be glad that there is one conservative left in this race!

malan89 on January 22, 2008 at 4:29 PM

Early in the Fred Phenomenon I tried and tried and tried to lock in a sit-down with Fred to talk to Michelle on camera.

That said it all. Fred was originally trying to run an unconventional campaign filled with conservative principles and ideas, but it never materialized.

If he can’t reach out to his natural base here at Hot Air, he wasn’t going to be reaching anyone with his message.

In the early days of the talk about him getting in, I was as much about Fred! as anyone, but he totally lost me when he made it clear that he wouldn’t be able to get his message out to the voters. I jumped ship and eventually settled on the man I thought would be the best at getting conservativism to the masses.

One of the biggest problems with George W. Bush has been that even on issues where he is conservative, his inarticulate nature and terrible message machine undermine his effectiveness on those issues. As a principled conservative, being articulate and visible is vitally important, a fact that I think Fredheads ignored to their peril.

And now moving on…

Romney id the only conservative left in the race. We (Fredheads) must rally around Romney. McCain or Huck would be disastrous to this country.

**shifts from Fredhead to Mitthead**

infidelesto on January 22, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Bottom line, there was lots of people like me anxious to support him but he looked unwell in the beginning and his early performances were uninspiring and we all moved on. If his health had been better he would have easily survived any early organizational missteps. Let’s not forget that Kerry survived serious campaign issues in ‘04 and Fred would have as well. To boil this down to that misses the real cause of his collapse in my opinion.

Do you know why John McCain dislikes Mitt Romney so mch? It is because Mitt was campaigning against MCCAIN/Feingold last winter. Mitt said it dozens and dozens of times. Mitt would not be on the ticket with McCain and McCain would not be on the ticket with Mitt.

EJDolbow on January 22, 2008 at 4:36 PM

If Mitt wants to win, he should loose FL to Rudy. He should tell all his supporters to vote for Rudy. If Mitt or McCain wins FL, it will knock out Rudy. If Rudy looses FL, most of his voters will (for some reason) flock to McCain, and McCain will dominate on 2/5. Mitt’s only chance is to have Rudy win FL, stay in the race and split the Rudy/McCain support on 2/5.

It does not matter where they were, it matters where they are NOW.

Let me let you in on a little secret. The GOP needs a good chunk of the soccer moms and they WILL NOT vote for a guy that cheats on his WIVES, publically hurts the mother of his children, and marries a tarty type like Judi Nathan.

They DO vote in part for the First Lady and Ann Romney beats Judi, Judi, Judi by a million miles in the class department.

They WILL vote for a man who has been married to a woman he still calls “sweetie” and “hot” for forty years. Like it or don’t, Conservative women will not vote in large numbers for a cheater because Conservative women know that is a serious character flaw.

If Rudy and McAmnesty split the “moderate” vote and ex-Fred conservatives rally to Mitt and he somehow takes Florida, then this is a whole new ballgame.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on January 22, 2008 at 4:59 PM

Bryan,

You make some great points about the necessity of organization. As I was reading through your comments two things came two mind.

First, Romney was out there in Nevada instead of joining the herd in South Carolina. That indicates to me he isn’t taking these primaries for granted the way some others have. Rudy for instance.

Secondly, you talked about Fred making the case for electing him. It strikes me that John McCain is doing much of the same thing. He’s got serious problems with conservative voters and he consistently refuses to deal with that fact. The longer he ignores this divide, the more arrogant he seems.

atxcowgirl on January 22, 2008 at 5:15 PM

I disagree Bryan. Huckabee still doesn’t have much of an organization but he does have a message. Fred did not have a message until the SC debate when he became the defender of the Reagan coalition. Also, fred was never able to firmly and consistently criticize John McCain. This was necessary because conservative vets in SC needed to have a reason not to vote for McCain and McCain promised border security. Fred could have said don’t trust McCain and that would have stuck.

Too many mistakes and a candidate who did not want to play the game produced a loser. I’ll mourn the opportunity he presented but it is good he left to give the GOP to coalesce around the next best choice.

The sheep seemed to bleat the MSMs drumbeat of “Thompson got in too late”, and “he’s got no fire in his belly” quite well.

electric-rascal on January 22, 2008 at 5:59 PM

Respectful, thougthful, well said Bryan.
