Shamelessly poached from SeeDubya, where you’ll find Mad Mahmoud reviewing the same game. That one needs its content warning. This one, not so much.
I haven’t played CoD4. Any Hot Airheads in the audience have anything to say about it?

Best games 2007
1. Bioshock
2. Call of Duty 4
3. Halo 3
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 10:20 AM
The game had a short but satisfying single player campaign. The multiplayer combines all the character customization of a role-playing game with the endless satisfaction by fast-paced shooting games. Its definitely a great game.
AbaddonsReign on January 22, 2008 at 10:21 AM
I’ve heard good things about it. But no, haven’t played it either. The demo’s floating around.. But I’m finding myself spending hours on games that I once spent hours on as a 12 year old, rather than buying any new games.
..In fact, I don’t think I’ve actually played a game made later than 2006 in the last 9 months..
Reaps on January 22, 2008 at 10:21 AM
CoD4 is quite possibly the best multiplayer game ever. The single player is also very good, if a bit short. But the MP will have you hooked in no time.

I wish our glorius leaders would review games.
snaggletoothie on January 22, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I can do it for free. Im married, so I really dont have much of a life.
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 10:28 AM
ALOT of cheats/hackers though… just saying…
Mumar Gadaffi’s is the best video of the bunch IMO….
liquidflorian on January 22, 2008 at 10:29 AM
Not as much as Halo 3, I got it but I stopped playing MP because of the cheaters.
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 10:30 AM
I play it on Xbox Live so I don’t have to deal with any of that garbage. Screaming, racist 12-year-olds? Sure but no hackers
Number 2 on January 22, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Dude, CoD4 is the best multiplayer shooter out there.
unamused on January 22, 2008 at 10:32 AM
M4 w/ silencer & Iron Eagle is the best combo to use……
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Having run around Fallujah with Marines, the scenes of running around a Middle Eastern city with Marines was freakily realistic, almost disturbing. (as the Marines around you in COD4 get shot left and right, and your own Sea Knight helicopter winds up going down)
Also, the scene where you operate the weapons systems on a AC-130 gunship is so exactly like the b&w thermal gun camera footage you see on the net, I had the bizarre thought of a 9 year-old COD4 player being able to comfortably step in and go on a mission if we ever have a shortage of AC-130 crewmen.
Many of the details, from the varying kick and sounds of the weapons you use, to the detail of the helicopters, are spot-on. Graphics in single-player are amazing. Graphics in multiplayer don’t seem quite as amazing, but still great. The airstrikes, UAV and support helicopetrs you can call in are great.
Complaints: unlike some other first-person shooters, the action in COD4 is so fast and the movement so fluid that the gameplay is, in that way, totally unrealistic.
Your guy feels like he is flying on wheels rather than running, as compared to Ghost Recon 2, for example. The gameplay is perfect for ADHD kids getting a maximum adrenaline high, and it hones reflexes and rapid situational awareness like nothing else, but sometimes it’s nice to play something with a bit more of a strategic pace.
BillINDC on January 22, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Unfortunately, there will always be people in online multiplayer games that will use cheats, hacks, map exploits, etc. to buff their epeen. Doesn’t matter if the game has 2 players or 200, it always will have someone trying to break it.
that being said, I haven’t played CoD4, yet, I might look into it once I find myself getting bored, and I can find it in the 9.99 clearance bin…
Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on January 22, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Yep, CoD4 is a great game on the 360, especially if you’ve got it hooked up to the HD tv.
Mr. Bingley on January 22, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Single player campaign outstanding, although too short IMHO. Graphics so stunning, you find yourself dying from just looking at the dust/scraps of paper/smoke drifting through the air.
Certain modes of multiplayer worthless, 1 second respawn time, spawn/die/spawn/die/spawn/die, etc.
Worth the $50 for the nuke scene and being gunner in the AC-130 Spectre gunship alone. Ka-boom!
rightside on January 22, 2008 at 10:35 AM
On, the PC the guys using aimbots are pretty obvious. My only criticism… otherwise its a blast. They need more maps though…
liquidflorian on January 22, 2008 at 10:36 AM
My god, I loved that mission; it really is a ton of fun and it looks exactly like all of the films you’ve seen on youtube.
Mr. Bingley on January 22, 2008 at 10:37 AM
BillinDC hit the nail on the head. The AC-130 level is disturbingly realistic.
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 10:37 AM
But overall verdict is that it’s awesome.
BillINDC on January 22, 2008 at 10:37 AM
liquid,
They recently added a few new maps. The ship from the first mission and the courtyard where they excecute the leader in the beginning of the game.
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 10:38 AM

I’m still hooked on COD:united offensive. Base Assault is a fantastic MP mode. Texas Militia FTW!
TexasDan on January 22, 2008 at 10:44 AM
COD4 was my favorite game of 2007, and that’s saying something against games like Mass Effect and Bioshock
sbc44 on January 22, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Just spent the last half hour chasing this up, but it’s still worth it as it’s such a goody.
This isn’t the first time that games have used ads making fun of.. certain figures/politics to sell themselves
Reaps on January 22, 2008 at 10:54 AM
You liked Mass Effect?? I thought it was ehhhh at best. Bioshock is a classic.
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 10:55 AM
If they could just make an FPS with a bit more of a strategic pace and realistic movement, and COD4 graphics, I think it would take the genre to a new level.
Though not an FPS, I’m curious to see what Tom Clancy’s EndWar will be like. It’s a strategy game based on the Madden Football-type interface.
BTW -
I meant that the detail (uniforms, look of the city, movement, sounds of gunfire) was realistic in my experience, not the getting shot down, marines getting shot left-and-right parts (which were what bothered me a little while playing the game) … of course. :-)
BillINDC on January 22, 2008 at 10:59 AM
The AC-130 mission is by far one of the best missions of any game I ever played.
I wished they would have made it longer. Heck, I would have loved a huge fire fight with the AC-130 flying cover. Even better if the good guys were holed up in a building and we were leveling the place as hundreds of troops try to storm the building.
Tim Burton on January 22, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Have a look at Mass Effect. COD4 is fabulous.
drjohn on January 22, 2008 at 11:13 AM
This is currently my favorite game (in MP mode) and it eats up a couple hours of my day every day…. but mostly after my family goes to bed so my wife doesn’t shoot me as well as other players.
Some have mentioned the hackers; I’ve found that recent Punkbuster updates have cut huge swaths of these kiddies out from the servers and the gameplay has been much, much improved.
As for the graphics, I was very fortunate enough to have been building a brand new PC right when this came out I was able to swing for dual nVidia 8800 GTX cards so I can run this game on its highest setting; the visuals and gameplay are so good that I’m sure it plays a role in why I’m addicted to it.
Lastly, the fun you get from playing it is directly proportional to whom you’re playing with, and so try out different Clan-based* servers because many of them police their own for conduct, language, and general character of gameplay.
*For those who aren’t familiar with online gaming, don’t be afraid of the word Clan, it means something completely different in a gaming context than a political website one. It simply means club or organization.
cry havoc on January 22, 2008 at 11:14 AM
My only problem with it is its “PC-ness” i.e. it seems like the only people you can fight in video games these days are Nazis or Russians. Granted, there is probably about 10% of the game where you are fighting in the Middle East…but in my opinion, if the game is title “Modern Warfare” well then, we all know who we should be fighting, and it ain’t Russians.
Other than that, the game is frighteningly realistic at times.
SillyRyno on January 22, 2008 at 11:25 AM
I play the PS3 version while waiting for the Mac version release (April, I think). When that comes along, I’ll be sluggin’ it out with my [PMOH] brothers and sisters. They run a clean server. Look for them.
MikeZero on January 22, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Its not really PCness IMO. They just got tired of doing actual WWII stories and tried to do a fictional story with modern weapons.
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I just started single-player yesterday. It’s more of a Hollywood theme-park ride than a tactical simulator, but it’s still pretty impressive.
Blacklake on January 22, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Best of 2007? The Orange Box, by a mile.
greenonions on January 22, 2008 at 11:34 AM
I think Tom Clancys GRAW is more of a simulator.
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Orange Box better than Bioshock?????? nooooway
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 11:35 AM
The lack of “cover system” kills this game for me.
Tesson on January 22, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Just the thing to keep him occupied on those ‘ronery’ nights.
Hening on January 22, 2008 at 11:41 AM
I agree that the PC has high hardware requirements and the MP is cheater paradise–Xbox 360 is the preferred platform on COD4.
The offer still stands on that Xbox 360 Elite if you want the hookup, Bryan…
ScottMcC on January 22, 2008 at 11:56 AM
COD4 just overtook Halo3 as the most played game on the Xbox 360. In other words, it is ludicrously popular right now.
Queasy on January 22, 2008 at 11:58 AM
As mentioned above, the AC-130 mission is worth the price of admission alone.
Also, as well done as the game is, I agree that the lack of a “cover system”, in this day and age, is nearly unacceptable.
askheaves on January 22, 2008 at 11:59 AM
COD4 is the best right now and i was not happy to hear they were going away from a WWII theme. But they did it, it is an awsome game….If you like the WWII theme, Brothers in Arms is coming…hang in there.
1. COD4
2. Bioshock
3. Orange Box
4. Halo 3
5. Mass Effect
But that’s just me…:-)
Brian on January 22, 2008 at 12:11 PM
2 words. Shock and Awe.
MyImamToldMeToDoIt on January 22, 2008 at 12:23 PM
It stinks that as a PS3 owner, I can’t get any Halo or Mass Effect because they are XBox360 exclusives.
I might have to check out COD4 though. I’m not too much into the multiplayer aspect of it, and I had read that the single player was pretty short… but it sounds like it’s still worth it.
This might be my next game purchase.
Nineball on January 22, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Very addicting and fun game to play online.
My name is Mitt Romney online.
iamse7en on January 22, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Mass Effect was fun the first time through; I’m disappointed in its replay value; Oblivion still has many more hours of fun in it.
Maybe we should have a Hot Air xbox360 group…
Mr. Bingley on January 22, 2008 at 1:14 PM
COD 4 is an outstanding game. Since my divorce, Xbox Live allows for “fun” long-distance times with my son—rather than those awkward “How are you?” phone calls. Our preference is by far, the Tom Clancy games, as they are more “real life”…no aliens and u cannot sprout wings. The Tom Clancy Spinter Cell series(spy game) are really good…but the best for multiplayer game play is Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas. By the way, the Rainbow Six Vegas SEQUEL will be out in March.
Okay, I’m a big kid. But these games clearly were NOT designed by liberals….as there is NO negotiating….lol. I think a fun topic would be Liberal Game Titles! If any of u guys are interested, I’m “CarmineTheFlea” on XBox Live.
deedtrader on January 22, 2008 at 1:14 PM
Try playing something other than a first person shooter for once.
I’m afraid for the future of gaming.
Having said that, CoD4 is definitely the best FPS game this year, mainly because the 1 player and the online multiplayer experiences are both outstanding. Usually it’s one or the other.
Nessuno on January 22, 2008 at 1:22 PM
CoD4 is fun, but the ranking system is stupid. For example, it isn’t until you are a Lt Col until you can use the HK G36. When you become a Sgt of some type, you get to use the M4! Yay!
I hate martyr and the “noob tube” m203 grenade launcher. Its effective, but lazy.
Weebork on January 22, 2008 at 1:38 PM
If you’re talking FPS, I’d agree that Bioshock was the best one of 2007, but that’s because it had a fantastic storyline and breathtaking graphics. COD4 is my #2, because the storyline / graphics aren’t quite up to that of Bioshock. That takes nothing from it, though, COD4 is an AMAZING game.
And yes, the multiplayer is fantastic. Ridiculously addictive. IMO, it blows Halo 3 multiplayer totally out of the water (I’ve barely played Halo 3’s MP, because I do not even feel that it can compete). There’s so many challenges and weapons to unlock, it has an insane replay value. I’m only a few points away from becoming a Brigadier General.
Gamertag is Sascha Vykos. FIGHT ME, N00BS.

Jerrys and jarheads. Not interested.

I’m glad to see someone had the sense to add Valve to their list, tho I’d specifically name Portal as the best of the Orange Box five.
The cake is a lie!
PolitiNOOB on January 22, 2008 at 2:16 PM
Simply put, COD4 rocks. Hard.

Not really a big FPS fan, but if I had to play one, it’d be this.
We need more RPG’s in America dang it.
Grayson on January 22, 2008 at 2:59 PM
After 2 full years in Iraq, I have to disagree that COD represents the middle east with anything near reality; but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to play.
Still, all of the insurgents wearing helmets and vests and boots etc did make me laugh. As did the giant metal trash dumpsters that were everywhere. So many other little things like that, but you know, if you haven’t been there, you’d never notice, and I’m guessing not many game designers have been there, :)
chupa on January 22, 2008 at 3:05 PM
But it’s so delicious & moist!
Vyce on January 22, 2008 at 3:10 PM
I think it should be noted, that although Hollywood is missing the boat on what Americans want to watch, the game studios are not.
Call of Duty 4 is a great example of giving people what they want, and at 500Mill+ gross it is thumping most of the movies.
And it is a fantastic game.
lowerpower on January 22, 2008 at 3:26 PM
CoD4 is as to gaming as Reagan is to Conservative.
Viscount_Bolingbroke on January 22, 2008 at 3:26 PM
COD4 is fun but was too easy to get 5 stars in multiplayer.
TroubledMonkey on January 22, 2008 at 3:49 PM
“one star” lol
oakpack on January 22, 2008 at 3:53 PM
its easy but it takes quite a while…
JVelez on January 22, 2008 at 4:06 PM
Hillary Clinton has previously told us how we should not be able to buy “violent” video games for our own good, and yet so-called non-intrusive libertarian types like Glenn Reynolds would vote for Hillary before *any* Republican. Go figure.
To be fair I think Mitt Romney also said something about ‘violent’ video games sold to teens or something. I kinda thought that was the parent’s job, not governments, but i guess it really does take a village (a euphemism for elected elite telling us what to do).
Neo on January 22, 2008 at 4:21 PM
Well the wife got me this game for Christmas. Got it all loaded on the computer and of course it wont run on my PC. Talk about a tease!

I had to send that vid to my son who is in the next room playing CoD4 right now. He’s a Kim Jong Il fan. Well, the KJI from TEAM AMERICA (F*CK YEAH!!) that is…. LOL!
