Report: Fred dropping out; Update: Confirmed; Update: What went wrong? Update: The man who stopped Huckmentum

Ambinder says so and Carl Cameron is reporting it on Fox now. Stand by for updates.
Update: Cameron says it could come tonight or tomorrow. He’s already informed his campaign headquarters, in person.
Update: The website hadn’t been updated in four days. The “Fred File feed” is already offline.
Update: Here’s the official statement via his web guy, Jon Henke:
McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”
Update: The problem in one word: Not laziness but disorganization. Karl’s been doing yeoman’s work at Goldstein’s place lately tracking how Hillary managed to eke out wins against Obama despite the fact that he’s well-funded and light years more charismatic than she is. Read this post and follow the links to the Las Vegas Sun and, especially, to Zak Exley to see what it takes. The media likes sexy/dopey pop-psych narratives about election-eve crying and racial jabs, but organization matters — a lot, a rule Fred always seemed to believe he could ignore by counting on his True Conservative status to carry him through. Again I point you to this Mark Steyn post, or to MM’s tale of how his people couldn’t pull it together to get 500 signatures in Delaware. If the lesson (or one of the lessons) of Ron Paul’s newsletter fiasco was that you can’t trust a guy to manage a country if he can’t manage his own vanity publication, how can you trust a guy who can’t figure out how to get on the ballot in all 50 states?
So I’m chalking it up to disorganization. The alternative, that Bush killed the Reagan coalition dead and left Thompson types inviable no matter how efficiently their machines might run, is simply too terrible to contemplate.
Update: He served up the red meat, says Geraghty, but he didn’t char-grill it.
Update: I fear this news calls for anti-humpbot.
Update: Mitt’s race to lose now in Florida?
Update: I flagged these links after the South Carolina but we’re in obit mode here so let’s bring them back. What’s the legacy of Fred’s campaign? Disappointment and disorganization, yes, but something else too:
The reaction from Marvin Katzen, the McCain supporter who told us earlier in the evening that he was looking for vindication from the 2000 loss to tonight’s win: “Thank God for Fred Thompson.” Katzen credits McCain’s victory to the fact that Thompson split the conservative evangelical vote with Mike Huckabee in Upstate.
“While well behind and tied for third place with Romney, Thompson did make gains,” wrote Thomas Edsall, “and the data suggest that the 6 points Thompson picked up came out of Huckabee’s hide.” Huck’s own people admitted as much. It falls to Romney to finish McCain but Fred can claim a moral victory in having dispatched the demagogue.
Update: If you believe ARG, and you probably shouldn’t, McCain’s lead in Florida is now large enough that picking up Fred’s supporters won’t matter to Mitt.
Update: A wistful eulogy from Spruiell.
Update: Rich Galen, a now former Fred advisor, is pushing his man for veep.

Okay, can we banninate this guy now?
Slublog on January 22, 2008 at 4:11 PM
bullpucky…guess what? Fred pandered to the Fredheads
He was rated a moderate conservative during his Senate career and moved further right for this campaign because he saw an opening. But keep rooting for McCain to get nomination and 8 years of Shillary, you don’t have a lot of company here.
windansea on January 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM
Congratulations. You are officially someone who gives Christians a bad name.
MadisonConservative on January 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM
It’s all very ouch for this Fredhead. I’ll definitely miss having as sharp and reliable of a conservative as Fred in this race.
I think I’ll be pulling for Romney now.

Mormonism is a cult. It is not recognized by the Christian church as a Christian denomination yet they claim to be.
In fact mormons believe that the entire Christian church is a cult.
HaraldHardrada on January 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM
One example: his plan to resist gay marriage. He wanted to pass an amendment to limit the full faith and credit clause, as well as to strip the power of judicial review in certain cases just to try to stop gay marriage. It’s better to ban the practice outright via a targeted Amendment than to mangle the rest of the Constitution in the process.
Big S on January 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM
You certainly may, any time - damned foreigners have the biggest challenge with words which are expressed the same, while being spelled differently. Though on this one it’s mute/moot, one could say :) Madison, you’re a good one,
Entelechy on January 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM
Yeah. Crazy. And the debate where Fred lied about supporting the surge and criticized Mitt for not.
MSNBC’s NORAH O’DONNELL: “We have a Rudy Giuliani, who supports the president’s plan on Iraq. We have Governor Mitt Romney, who also supports a troop surge. How are you different from any of those candidates.”
Answer: “Well, I’m not sure that I support the troop surge, if that surge has to come from our Guard and Reserve troops, which have really been overly stretched.”
Spirit of 1776 on January 22, 2008 at 4:15 PM
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Be not afraid. Mitt is it. He’s going to bring back all things conservative from the ’80s, including Members Only jackets!
Notice he’s been wearing one? Notice they just relaunched and will have a new line for Fall ‘08. Coincidence? I think not!

Brat on January 22, 2008 at 4:16 PM
In fact I don’t support Huckabee because he was a minister.
I support him because he has the strongest energy independence plan and because I support the fair tax.
HaraldHardrada on January 22, 2008 at 4:16 PM
Disappointed FredHeads who are considering staying home, please take in this post by from a recent thread:
———————————————————-
Heres something to consider in November no matter WHO the nominees of each party are: if the Dems win and keep control of Congress, I bet you a donut that on January 22nd, the Dems recall Gen [Petraeus] and haul him in chains in front of Barbara Boxer, Dick Durbin, Maxine Waters and Jihad John Murtha, ably assisted by the ACLU, CAIR and countless NGOs, to face a hurricane of warcrime accusations…
Something to chew on if youre one of those thinking of staying home in November because the guy we nominate isn’t 1000% perfect on every issue,(and he wont be, whoever he is).
Mike D.
RushBaby on January 22, 2008 at 4:17 PM
Vote to ban.
Vizzini on January 22, 2008 at 4:17 PM
Man, with Russia heating up, it would have been great to have President Thompson repeat these famous words. “The Russians don’t take a dump, son, without a plan.”
IT could have been…
Dr. Gecko on January 22, 2008 at 4:18 PM
Well that’s too bad. Guess I’ll be voting
for Mittagainst the Dem nominee then.I won’t vote for McCain because of his involvement in the amnesty mess. I don’t believe him for a second when he says he “gets it” and has had a change of heart. With a Dem congress to back him, I’m sure he’d try it again should he get voted in.
I won’t vote for America’s Sanctuary City Mayor, either. Aside from his stances on guns and illegal immigration, I don’t appreciate his intellectually dishonest “my city was attacked on 9/11 = leadership” appeal. His personal baggage would make the General election pretty ugly… there’s no question Her Thighness will bring it up, seeing as how her campaign has treated The Messiah so far.
I won’t vote for Huck because, even though I’m a Christian, I find his blatant identity politics offensive. His positions on a number of issues concern me.
I’m not voting for the newsletter guy.
That leaves Mitt. I don’t have a problem with him being a Mormon because he’s just a layman. Sorry if that offended any Mormon readers here. I just hope there’s no “October Surprise” concerning him, and that he doesn’t get hammered in the General as a flip-flopper.
So here’s to another election cycle faced with crappy choices.
Dave Shay on January 22, 2008 at 4:19 PM
Finally, a voice of reason in this debate.
fred5678 on January 22, 2008 at 4:19 PM
Successful private sector business experience, for one.
Larger Delegate count, for another.
Rudy would make a pretty good Secretary of Homeland Security or even Attorney General. I like Hizzoner but given the poll numbers I’m seeing out of Florida…the state Rudy’s put the overwhelming majority of his campaign effort into…I’m wary of throwing support to another likely soon-to-be-ex-candidate.
I’d pick Mitt over Mack. I will vote against any ticket with Huckabee-nejad on it. Even if Huck’s only the veep.
Period.
Shirotayama on January 22, 2008 at 4:19 PM
members only coalition LOL
windansea on January 22, 2008 at 4:20 PM
Any one of them can get the “energy independence” going, and none will do a thing about the so-called “fair tax”. I explained this before.
Entelechy on January 22, 2008 at 4:20 PM
Fred was always rated conservative, but his ill advised support for McCain-Feingold cost him. In 2000 he finished with a conservative rating of 92. Other things were supposedly non-conservative was his strong support of the conservative principle of Federalism- something that Romney clearly does not understand or support.
Mitt was a RINO who completely reinvented himself and everything he stood for the moment he decided to run. He could’ve earned my unenthusiastic support, but his sleazy pandering that includes throwing taxpayer money at every perceived problem made him unacceptable to me.
You want to vote for a blatant phony who’ll say anything he thinks you want to hear up until he gets elected? Fine, that’s your choice. This election I choose to vote for someone I actually support rather than the “lesser of two evils”. And that would be “nobody”.
Hollowpoint on January 22, 2008 at 4:20 PM

“The conservative movement is dead and to prove it, I’ll vote for Hillary…”
Go ahead, exercise your God-given right to be a moron.
Reading some of these comments, I think Libs may be on to something when they paint conservatives as “reactionary”.
I just hope this primary season is akin to a hangover which dissipates over time and leads to a clearer, less emotional thought process going in to November.
CliffHanger on January 22, 2008 at 4:20 PM
Mormons actually believe that the reason why people have dark skin is because they are cursed by God…
How is that going to fly in the general election??
Also they believe the entire Christian church is a cult.
Yeah harass me because I talk about the fact that mormonism is in fact deemed a cult by the Christian church.
Completely ignore the fact that mormons state that Christians are cult members openly.

doubleplusundead on January 22, 2008 at 4:26 PM
Mitt? Meh.
At this point, I’d relish the fight that four years of Clinton would bring. It’d beat fighting a Republican for four more years like I have this past four.
And with her in office, I might get more than a little bit of help from Congress. There’s no way in hell that the Democrats will keep both the House and the Senate in 2010 with her in the Oval Office. So I get rid of Speaker Pelosi or Senate Leader Reid (or both!) and have two elections to jam some good solid conservatives into Congress. I think I’d take that deal. That’s not reactionary. It’s rational.
Jimmie on January 22, 2008 at 4:26 PM

I don’t have a problem with mormon people. I’ve done business with mormons and they are very honest and stay true to their word in my experience.
But is mormonism a cult?? Yes. they have added to the scripture. Fact.
Is Willard Romney unelectable? Yes. 100% unelectable that is what scares me..running a unelectable candidate aginst the Hildebeast and guaranteeing her coronation!
HaraldHardrada on January 22, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Harald: Let’s make this short and sweet. What on God’s green earth does Mormonism and it’s merits have to do with this thread? This thread is about Thompson leaving the race. He’s not LDS.
It’s universally recognized that LDS people tend to be some of the most conservative there are. So why should Mormon beliefs matter one hill of beans?
The only reason it does is if you are a bigot, who thinks that “Oh NOES! They worship differently than me! BURN THEM ALL!”
I’ll ask you the same question I asked some others of your ilk on this website: do you agree with the idea of driving Mormons out of the United States at the point of a gun? Do you think that’s a good idea?
Oh, and btw–you have been revealed as a liar by another poster in this thread, who quoted your “I don’t care about Mormons” schtick from yesterday. You, sir, are a liar. No wonder you like Huckabee. Like calling to like.

Before I state what I’m about to, I agree that this HaraldHardrada is at least guilty of “thread hijacking”…and I don’t particularly like his style of “discussion”…
That being said, he does have something correct: (and speaking soley from my Catholic viewpoint) Mormonism is considered a “cult of Christianity” by the Vatican, because it rests outside the orthodox Christian beliefs.
And a baptised Mormon convert to the Catholic church must be re-baptized (a requirement waived for baptized converts from other Christian religions). The biggest problem the Church has with the Mormon beliefs is the notion that God had physical relations with Mary to conceive Jesus.
But honestly, what a persons religion has to do with holding the Office of POTUS I don’t know…I’m not a Mitt fan, but it has nothing to do with any religion.
And this thread shouldn’t be about Mormonism anyway…this may be the last “Fred Thread” we get :-(
